Mr Duncan mouthed `sorry' at us, Landers spun round, his face contorted in hate, he ran at Forts flailing his hands at his chest. `I hate you; I hate you; I hate you' Landers slid down to the floor, wailing like an injured animal, I went to help him up; he pushed my hands away. I glanced down to Mr Duncan, who was sobbing; torn between coming to comfort Landers and leaving, he mouthed `look after him for me' and ran down the stairs, tears streaming down his face. We finally managed to help Landers to his feet, just as Mr Evans came out of the staff room, he came over and nodding knowingly said. `Leave him with me' **************** Guys a bit cruel of me not to give you a clue, this was always going to be a two-part chapter. Forgive me. **************** Operation Pied Piper – Part 31b Davy resumes the story Forts and I had retired to our room; he had barely spoken; just sitting staring into space; his head in his hands. The meeting had been worse than I expected. I still couldn't believe that Mr MacDonald had firstly expelled Forts and then thanks to Mr Duncan; of all the people, we had to be grateful too, rescinded that decision; albeit, it seemed, rather than loose his chef. But then to strip Forts of his position as Head Boy and Lead Prefect seemed downright vindictive; I didn't know how I felt about Athol anymore; Mr MacDonald that is. Forts got off the bed and walked to the window, he finally spoke. `Did you see how upset Lander's was? I doubt he will ever speak to me again, this is all such a mess and all my fault, because I got frightened with Mr Duncan'. `Hang on Forts, he was brutal with you, he was the one who kept challenging your love for me' `That's the problem Davy, he never really threatened what you and I have, but you never did see that, no matter what I said or did. I enjoyed having sex with Mr Duncan, it was you who hated the thought of it, you who threatened to leave me if it continued, now look at us' That stung; but they say the truth hurts, I had hated the thought of Mr Duncan slobbering all over Forts, even if it was just sex. I crossed over to Forts by the window and wrapped my arms round his waist and snuggled into his neck, his head tilted resting on mine; a small gesture, but so reassuring. I was nearly frightened to ask. `You do still love me, don't you Forts? He turned to face me; his face a study in sadness, he tried to force a smile. `Davy, you know I do, I always will' He kissed me gently, just as the evening meal gong began sounding. Forts stepped back. `I am not really hungry, you go and have something, I think I will have an early night' Even I can recognise when someone wants to be left alone, so I nodded and quietly headed for the door, I was just about to open it, when someone began hammering on the other side, I glanced at Forts as the door burst open, pushing me aside, it was Landers, his face was wild, his eyes darting all over the place, monetarily he focused on me and then; rapidly moved on, it wasn't me he was looking for. Landers eyes focused on Forts; landers spat the words at him `There you are, I hope your pleased with yourself, I hate you Fortnum, you have ruined my life, there is no point to it now' Forts went to say something as Landers spun on his heels and ran from the room, tears streaming down his face. Forts looked at me `I had better go after him' `Well if you are, I'm coming too, who knows what he will do to you' I followed Forts out of the room, in time to see landers running up the staircase towards the fifth floor. I looked at Forts `Where do you think he is off too? Forts pushed past me and began running up the stairs, two at a time, I was close on his heels, we got to the fifth-floor landing, Forts calling out Landers name, there was no sign of him. `Landers, Landers where are you? Forts called out again and began knocking on the room doors `Boy's what's the commotion all about? A bleary-eyed Mr Morris came out of his room `It's Landers, Mr Morris, he is terribly upset and ran up this way, saying his life was over' Mr Morris looked a bit surprised then uncomprehending `There is nowhere to hide up here, it just leads to the roo...' Now, I have never described the narrow wooden staircase on the fifth floor which led up to a small door giving access to the tower roof, it was used to gain access to the Castles flag poles. His voice trailed off as a loud band rang out as the wind caught the roof wooden access door, slamming it shut. Mr Morris spun on the spot `He must have gone out on to the roof, Davy go and get Mr MacDonald, Forts come with me' Mr Morris with Forts close behind him ran for the staircase leading to the roof door, I heard their footsteps as they ran up the wooden runners and the bang of the door as it closed behind them. I ran down to the fourth floor landing, peering down between the ornate carved wooden banisters, boys were beginning to crowd the lower staircase as they headed for dinner, the gong was still sounding, I shouted down the stairs, my voice lost in the general clamour of boys heading for their meal, I glanced around; the fire alarm. I smashed the glass with the back of my hand and pressed the red button, the shrill bell started immediately, all the other noise eerily stopped, until the shouts of the master's to get out of the building began echoing off the walls. I saw Mr MacDonald appear at the bottom of the stairs he was peering up towards me. I waved madly shouting for him to come, I watched as he bounded up the stairs, shouting before he reached me. `What's happening? Did you set off the fire alarm? I nodded, now overwhelmed with emotion myself `Lander's said his life wasn't worth living and he ran out onto the roof, Mr Morris and Forts went after him' `Oh my god, No' Mr MacDonald ran past me, shouting for me to stay where I was; I couldn't I followed him. Mr Morris take up the Story With Forts right behind me, I ran out on to the roof, promptly landing on my back as I slipped on some green mould on the lead roof, as I got up I could see Forts scanning around, trying to locate Landers, then my heart sank, as he shouted out. `Landers no, stop, please stop, Landers, please no' I followed Forts gaze as he crept forward across the roof; Landers was standing on the far side of the crenulations, I called for Forts to wait, but he shouted back `I have to help him; this is all my fault' Now not having been at the meeting earlier, I had no idea what he was talking about, I managed to get myself up behind Forts, Landers was about ten foot away, he turned to face us `Go away, leave me alone, I want to die, I love Mr Duncan and now I can't have him, because of you' And then spat a final venomous `I hate you Fortnum' At that point the fire alarm bells began sounding in the Castle; what now? I gingerly glanced over the parapet, I could see boys being shepherded on to the grass in front of the Castle below us; to my eternal shame, I was overcome with nausea and terror, realising just how dangerous where we were was and how high up we were; my fear of heights engulfed me. I dropped to my knees, my fingers trying to scratch a hold in to the lead roof. Fortnum moved forwards `Drageon, no stay here, it's not safe' Forts glanced back at me `You stay here Sir; I will try and get him' I made a snatch at Forts kilt as he edged forward, but I missed, `No Forts, please' I felt helpless as my fear; probably best described as terror, had me again on all fours, slowly ever so slowly, I forced myself to crawl forwards, towards Forts. The flapping and banging of the flags and cables hitting the flag poles above us, echoing my pounding heart. Landers was screaming at Fortnum to stay back, but Fortnum pressed on easing himself out between the crenulations and on to a tiny parapet, which could only have been five inches wide; I began to retch in fear. Forts began shuffling along sideways, I managed to get a grip of myself and shouted at him uselessly again. `Fort, no, stay this side' Forts continued to shuffle along the parapet his kilt plaid flapping madly as the wind caught it. `Stay away, I am going to jump, this is all your fault, I hate you' Landers sobbed, his small frame was being buffeted by the wind: until your exposed like that several floors up, you just cannot imagine the strength of the wind. Forts was finally about a foot away from him, Fort's voice faltering as he spoke. `Well, shove up and I will jump with you, this is all my fault anyway' Landers didn't answer, his little hands flat on the stone behind him and nothing in front but air. I couldn't really hear what Forts was saying to Lander's, but he never stopped speaking to him, Forts never once raising his voice, his face one of resigned serenity; as they both stood staring out into space. I heard the roof door bang open and footsteps behind me on the roof, I glanced round, Mr MacDonald was slowly walking across the led roof, Davy behind him. I heard Mr MacDonald speaking slowly and calmly to Davy, who on seeing Forts and Landers perched inches from falling, became visibly and audibly upset. `Forts no, come back, be careful' Davy's voice was lost on the wind as he slumped to the floor. `Davy, please, stay here, by the door, please, for me' Davy nodded Mr MacDonald, glanced towards me huddled on the floor `Are you okay? I nodded, suddenly ashamed `Yes, just terrified of heights' `Move yourself back towards the door and stay with Davy' I nodded and began to crawl, irrationally unable to stand up; what is that all about, a fear that can make you feel like you will fall to your death, when you are in fact perfectly safe. `Landers, Forts, are you two okay? `I hope so Sir' Forts gave a little nervous chuckle. `Lander's is it okay if I come over and join you both' Landers didn't reply, I saw Forts slowly move his arm around Landers shoulders, Landers just looked into his face; whatever, Forts had been saying to him, Landers was now strangely quiet and at peace as he snuggled into Forts side. Mr MacDonald continued his painfully slow progress towards the two boys. `Lander's, would you let me lift you back over onto this side of the battlements, so we can talk.' Landers glanced backwards, as Mr MacDonald reached out a hand to grab him. `No' Landers snapped and suddenly swayed forward seemingly losing his footing; Davy began screaming and everything went into slow-motion. Fortnum, grabbed at Landers as the boy slipped off the five inch parapet, Landers arms flailed in the air, attempting to regain his balance, his little hands grabbed at Forts fly plaid, he swung on it as the fly plaid broach pin detached under the weight it was holding, the broach spiralled into the sky. The orange of the amber and the black of the castle image on the broach, bizarrely complementing the evening sky as my mind attempted to block out the horror I was witnessing, the broach rose in the air and seemed to hang for the briefest of moments and then vanished downwards. Mr MacDonald had launched himself forwards when he saw Landers swaying, one hand grabbing on to Landers shirt collar and the other somehow now buried in the waist band of Fortnum's kilt. With Davy pushing past me, screaming, Mr MacDonald fell backwards, hauling both tottering boys back over the low battlements and flat onto the roof in a heap next on top of him. Mr MacDonald immediately wrapped his arms round the two boys, hugging and holding them tightly, tears of joy and relief running down his cheeks. Davy joined the throng as they all hugged and kissed each other. It was only then that we became aware of the cheer that went up from the boys and master's on the grass several floor below, up until then apart from the odd gasp, silent witnesses to the entire event. Mr MacDonald picked up Landers and held him close to his chest, Davy and Forts were back on their feet, hugging and kissing. Mr MacDonald put an arm round Forts, their eyes met the look they exchanged spoke a thousand words, reinforced in barely a whisper, MacDonald said. `Thank you Forts, thank you' Gingerly the five of us made our way back down the wooden staircase onto the fifth floor of the Castle. Mr MacDonald who was carrying Landers in his arms, turned to me. `Gary, get that door secured can you, as soon as you can' The fire bell stopped suddenly, leaving us in a strange silence apart from a few nervous giggles; noises we were all making. As we made our way down the main staircase, Mr MacDonald stopped; I looked past him, on the next landing was Mr Duncan, he was as white as a sheet and had obviously been crying. Mr MacDonald whispered into Landers ear and then lowered him to the ground, Landers and Mr Duncan met on the stairs, embracing and kissing each other, wildly. Mr Duncan suddenly back in control, stood back, trying to hold Landers at arm's length, his eyes focused on Mr MacDonald's. Mr MacDonald smiled and turned back to us, can we all make our way to the staff room please; Forts, Davy and I nodded, Mr MacDonald looked back towards Mr Duncan, who was turning away. `Gregor, if you and Landers can join us too please' Davy takes over the story I looked round at Forts just about to speak when something, no someone crashed into us, it was Carstairs, I was elbowed out of the way as he hugged Forts, he couldn't speak, he just kept squeezing him and kissing his chest. As Forts squeezed him tight and bent down, Carstairs sobbed `I thought I had lost you too' `Hey Edwin, come here, I would never leave you, here give me a hug' Forts hugged him again, I think at that moment, it finally dawned on me just what Forts meant to Carstairs; he loved him as a brother, nothing else and Forts returned that love unconditionally. Carstairs turned and hugged me too and ran off to join his classmates. I was so proud of Forts. I watched as Mr MacDonald headed off down the stairs; he had his `School Head' head back on, I was holding on to Forts, for grim death, I kept squeezing his arm, he smiled down at me and squeezed me back. As we made our way down to the staff room, Mr Mac was speaking with the other Masters, they had assembled the school in the Great Hall. Mr Mac turned towards us all nodding and gestured for us to follow him, Mr Duncan and Landers stopped, but Mr Mac waved for them to follow too. Now you are probably all wondering what Mr Mac said to the school; maybe I will save that for another day, what I will share now is. `Boy's you will be pleased to hear that tomorrow we will all be having a big Scottish fry up breakfast thanks to Mr Duncan, who is resuming his duties as cook; ably assisted by his kitchen help Landers' His words nearly downed out by the cheers of the boys and the Master's too. I glanced round at Mr Duncan and Landers, both had tears in their eyes, as the cheering died down. `Yes, yes, wait, wait,' - Blackscar Mr MacDonald, brought the school to order once more and continued `Additionally, and most importantly, I want to publicly thank one of the bravest boys, no men, I know, Drageon Fortnum. Your Head boy and I am so pleased to say Head Prefect of Harrow Boys School, now you all witnessed what just happened, Fortnum come forwards please' Forts glanced at me, he was a bit of a mess his fly plaid hanging to the floor behind him, his black jacket and shirt torn, his hands and face streaked with dirt, he approached Mr MacDonald, who embraced him heartily. Mr MacDonald stood back once more. `Young man, it gives me great pleasure to return this to you, what you did today was one of the bravest things I have ever seen' Mr MacDonald produced Forts, flying Plaid Broach; picked up from where it had fallen. He gathered up the plaid and pulled together his jacket, then re attached the broach, then as the master's began clapping and the school cheered, he stood back smiling and clapped, Forts, stood tall; every bit the Head boy and Head Prefect. Landers broke from where he was standing in front of Mr Duncan and threw his arms round him and hugged him, Forts looked at Mr Duncan who was clapping enthusiastically too and smiled. Forts mouthed something, I couldn't make out, Mr Duncan nodded smiling, Forts then bent down and kissed Landers on the head and directed him back to Mr Duncan. Then gathering himself, he smiled; that killer smile. He turned and clapped the master's and then turned facing his peers; he clapped them too and they cheered even louder; their clapping now joined by feet stamping. He turned and came over to me, I could barely focus through my tears, I stood like everyone else clapping madly, smiling broadly he wrapped his arms round me and looked at Mr MacDonald, who still clapping and cheering gave a great nod and winked as Forts pressed his lips to mine. ***************** Forgive Mr MacDonald, he did what he thought was best and remember. `Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not all right, it's not yet the end' Forts See you all again in Chapter 32 – hopefully ****************** Guy's Thank you for taking the time to let me know you're enjoying this story.
