When we both got down stairs, Forts, was still beaming, he stopped and gave us both an odd look; then a look of realisation/recognition, came over his face and he blushed again as Archie winked at him. I suppose we did both look like we had just had a roll in the hay, which was just what we had done. ***************** Operation Pied Piper – Part 41 Forts takes over the story I couldn't wait to tell Davy that Morag and Daphne, were the first new residents at the recommissioned Castle Fraser stables, or for that matter that Archie and Athol used to use the same shag place we had found in the hayloft. Later that day, Archie had, had one last surprise for me, two name blocks, one for Morag and one for Daphne, he and Athol helped me hang them both above the stable door to the large stall, once Daphne was about eight months old and fully weaned, she would have her own stall, but until then she would stay in with her mum. `Forts, I want you and the boys who are helping and have an interest in the horses to get the other stalls, all ready, we may have another few horse's joining us here' Archie gave me a little wink `Oh, and another thing I want you to check the paddocks for ragwort' I must have looked at him a bit strange `Come on Fort's, that yellow flower I showed you, the one that looks like a rosette when it first begins to grow' I nodded, remembering the plant; which is highly poisonous to horses `Of course, I think I found one of the special forks for getting rid of it, hang on' I ran down to the store room and found the strange looking four-pronged fork, I took it back to Archie, he smiled and nodded `Well done, you did remember, they always have two shorter prongs on the outside. I will have a word with the local blacksmith and get him to make you a few more' I felt really pleased with myself as Archie gave me a hug and Athol patted me on the back. `Well done forts, right I need to get back to the Castle, Archie, have you got a few minutes, I need to speak to you about a few things' Archie, gave a bit of a questioning look and then nodded. `I will pop back before I go Forts, see you later on' I watched them both walk back out of the stable yard under the arch, now deep in conversation. They must have been gone nearly an hour, I had just filled another wheel barrow with sawdust and was taking it up to put on the floor of the remaining stalls, when a voice behind me spoke. `Ah, Forts, here you are' I turned round it was Mr Morris, next to him and being held by the shoulder was Carstairs, he looked a bit dishevelled and had obviously been crying, his eyes made contact with mine; pleading. `Mr Morris' I got down on my hunkers `Carstairs, come here little chap and give me a hug' Carstairs went to move forward, but Mr Morris kept his grip on his shoulder tight, holding him next to him. `I have just been showing Carstairs here round the walled garden, we have had a long chat haven't we Carstairs?' Carstairs nodded, wriggling against Mr Morris' grip, more tears running down his cheeks. I stood up. `I had thought we might see you there; after all, I asked you to see me, or are you above responding to a Masters request now?' Gary; Mr Morris sneered the last big. `I have been busy Mr Morris' `Oh, but of course, Castle Frasers, very own cowboy I hear now' `Mr Morris, please let Carstairs, go, he looks really upset' `Oh dear, how sad, perhaps someone else, needs to start being a bit friendlier' I went to step forward, he pulled Carstairs closer to him, Carstairs looked terrified, Mr Morris' face changed. `Go on, try it, who do you think MacDonald will believe; oh, of course you know he always has to support the Masters, you learned that last time, didn't you, or have you forgotten already, you really are not the brightest are you Forts?' Carstairs was sobbing. Mr Morris barked at him `Stop snivelling' `Let him go Gary,...please' `Oh, its Gary now is it when you want something. To fucking late, you call me Mr Morris' I stood not knowing what to do next, I knew he was deliberately trying to provoke me, but I also remembered Mr MacDonald's warning about fronting out Masters. `Now, finish up here and get yourself over to the walled garden office' Mr Morris turned still holding on to Carstairs, he stopped and turned back, letting go of him. `Otherwise, it could all get a bit nasty for you little friend here; if he has to stand in for you, I am sure you understand' Carstairs ran to me, throwing his arms round my waist, sobbing, I wrapped my arms round him, Gary, just stood and sneered, before walking away calling back over his shoulder. `Twenty minutes, you have twenty minutes' I cuddled Carstairs `Are you okay Edwin? He didn't hurt you, did he? Carstairs shook his head, still gripping me tightly. I didn't have long, `Do you want to come and see Daphne and Morag? Carstairs nodded, I led him to the stall and took him inside for a few minutes, he seemed to brighten up a bit. `She is huge Forts' He looked a bit apprehensive. `Oh, they are big softies really, would you like to help with the horses? He nodded again and hugged me. I glanced at my watch, I had better get over to the walled garden. `Carstairs, do you want to wait here and look after Daphne and Morag for me? He began to beam and nod. I ruffled his hair and left, I had better not piss Gary off any more than I have already. Archie takes over the story `Hello, little fella, what's your name? `Carstairs, Sir' The little guy looked terrified `I am not doing anything wrong Sir, Forts, I mean Fortnum said I was to wait here till he came back' `Where has he gone? `Mr Morris, ordered him to go to see him' Carstairs began to cry `What's up son, there is no need to cry' `I think he is going to hurt him, Sir' The kid began sobbing even more; shit. `Can you wait here with Daphne and Morag? Here feed them these, I will be right back' I reached into my pocket for the carrots Mr Duncan had just given me for the horses and thrust them at Carstairs; I legged it out of the stable yard as quick as I could, that fucker Gary; if he hurt Forts, I would swing for him. My heart was pounding, Athol had just spent the last hour telling me what he believed was going on. Even going back to our weekend away, how it had been Mr Duncan who had been the guy on the motorbike that nearly ran us off the road; he had arrived in such a state, it had taken several coffees to calm him down enough to enable him to tell Athol what was happening. Athol, confused and amazed/disbelieving even of the allegations and unsure what was really going on, hadn't wanted to ruin the weekend and tell me; which had led to me getting cross accusing him of keeping something from me. Then the bloody cab driver constantly beeping on his horn, that had been the last straw. In my mind we had gone from reunion to splitting up all over again, I was pissed off and had told Athol that; that had been when he left. Being a stubborn oaf, I hadn't been in contact since; how stupid we can be, when our subconscious convinces us we are up against dark forces, when in fact they don't exist, well not as we imagined. Emerging under the arch, I saw Athol walking towards the stable, he saw me running. `What is it? He shouted, I shouted back `Get to the walled garden office, quick, Gary has Forts' Athol's face dropped and he turned and began running towards the walled garden. I caught up with him up at the doorway into the garden, we both stopped running, transitioning to walking briskly, towards the green houses, once inside, we could hear the shouting and cries. Athol broke into a run again, the office door was locked, he looked at me, he was about to raise his fist to bang on it, when I sped up and hit the door with my shoulder, it burst open in a shower of wood splinters. Gary had Forts by the throat against the wall, Gary's face, inches from Forts', his hand under the boys' kilt obviously gripping his cock and balls. Gary, spun round, letting go of Forts throat and groin. `What the fuc...' Was all he managed to get out, as his brain took in the imploding door, and my fist as it hit him in the face. `Get out of the way son' I barked at Forts, Gary staggered backwards holding his jaw and then came at me, fists drawn, he lunged forward and his fist whisked past my ear, I threw another punch, catching him in the cheek, he staggered backwards again, landing on his chair, which, disintegrated into pieces. `Archie, Archie, enough, enough' As Gary stumbled to regain his feet, I felt a hand grab my arm as I prepared to punch him again. I looked round it was Athol, he was shaking his head at me. `Enough, enough' Gary had got himself up and was leaning on his desk, holding his cheek, moving his jaw from side to side. `You fucking animal' He hissed at me, he turned to Athol `You saw that, he hit me for no good reason, get your gorilla under control' Athol, turned to Forts who was stood open mouthed, he ushered him out of the room, past the splintered door, now hanging from just one hinge. `Go back to the Castle and wait in the staff room please Forts' Forts nodded, he looked in a state of shock too, Athol turned back to Gary `Gary, what the fuck is going on? What were you doing to Forts? `I was teaching the arrogant little shit a bit of respect' `There is only one piece of shit here' I couldn't stop myself. `Archie, please, that is really not helpful, can you wait outside' Athol glanced at me, his face imploring me. I nodded; `Try anything else and I will break your neck, you weasel' I stabbed my finger in the air at Gary, I knew I shouldn't have said it, but... I waited outside the door. I heard Gary's voice whine as soon as I got outside. `He fucking punched me; I want you to do something about it Athol, he isn't even a member of staff' `Well, that's where you are wrong; Archie is the new Factor for the Castle estates' I heard Athol's words, well that was news to me. `What! He is my boss now? Is that what you're saying? You're promoting your boyfriend above me? Well think again! `Gary the decision is mine and it's made and won't be changed, `Well, I won't be doing what he tells me' I heard Athol sigh `Gary, please, I want you to carry on working here, if you won't work under Archie; I don't have to tell you, you are only a signature away from solving your problem' Gary let out a loud `huh' noise. `Me resign? After all the years I have given you and worked for you? `I am not going to continue going round in circles Gary, you heard what I have decided' `Well, it stinks' Gary hissed. Athol continued `Well that's as maybe, now, I need you to tell me what the hell is going on between you, Brookmeyer, Forts and Davy' `I have to say nothing to you' Gary sounded furious. I hesitated, outside the door; I would make him speak. I stood listening, Athol, always was way better at using words and diplomacy than me. `No, that is true, but unless you do, you will be leaving the Castle immediately and I will be informing the draft board you are no longer in a protected profession' `You wouldn't do that? `Gary, please, how little you know me, now tell me what's been going on? Why is Forts being approached by pupils who think he is sleeping with them? Gary sniggered `What makes you so sure he isn't? He is a horny guy, as you well know' `Gary, I really don't understand, what's gone so wrong between us? We were friends, but since the incident on the roof, your behaviour has been bizarre, help me to understand' I stood, wanting to give Athol a shake; my head screaming, grow a pair, hit him. There was a scrape of furniture on the floor; I was about to rush back in. `Sit down, come on Gary, Please, help me, so I can help you, we go a long way back, what has gone wrong' Gary took a deep loud intake of breath. `You just don't see it, do you? You fawn over Forts and Davy, your favourites, you ignore the other pupils, look at Brookmeyer; a clever intelligent lad, by passed every time, when does he get a weekend away, when did he get any special treats?' `Gary, I don't think I do fawn over Forts and Davy; to use your word and we will have to agree to disagree about Brookmeyer's, `abilities' `Athol, listen to yourself, for god sake man, wake up and smell the coffee; everyone knows they are your favourites and they can do no wrong' Another, scrape of furniture. `Athol, you have no idea how unhappy Brookmeyer is, he loves Forts, more than you can imagine; yet he is treated as if he doesn't exist, by them both, you remember, what unrequited love feels like don't you? How awful it is to be ignored and belittled; and if you have forgotten, YOU, bloody well shouldn't have' I had, had enough, I decided to walk back into the room. Gary glanced up at me. `Oh, your Gorilla is back, or is he your lover again now. Mr Finlay, told me all about your father catching the two of you? Athol, couldn't help himself he glanced at me, suddenly looking concerned. Gary smirked, his face knew the truth, Athol, seemed to visibly sink into his chair, I stood glaring at Gary, my eyes daring him to say something else. We didn't have long to wait, Gary sat back folding his arms. `So, you want to know what's been going on? So, what of it, I have been shagging some of the pupils, who think they have been having Forts, so what, how many of the boys have you fucked Athol? You tell me that before you dare criticise me' I stood watching, wishing Athol would say something. He finally did, Athol fixed his red eyes on Gary's. `Gary, you will leave the Castle tonight. If you want you can take over the running of another farm on the estate; for old times' sake. You can continue to work in the kitchen garden, but you have no authority over anyone at the Castle, nor will you be allowed to stay inside the walls' `Your joking? `Gary, you have left me no choice' Athol stood up and turned towards the door `Is there going to be anyone left soon? Mr Finlay was right, you are a joke and will never be the Laird your father was' That outburst, seemed to cause Athol to stagger, he stopped and then walked from the room, his eyes fixed on the floor, I followed him out and across the garden and back to the Castle, he looked so very sad, every now and then wiping his eyes, he turned to me. `He is right, I am making a fucking mess of being the Laird, a position, I never wanted in the first place' I put my hand gently on his back, he turned and gave me a weak smile. `I need a walk, I am going to try and clear my head, I will see you back in the staff room' `Are you sure you don't want me to come with you? He shook his head `No, I will be fine, I just need a few minutes alone, can you see if you can find Brookmeyer, I want to see him'. He stopped and looked back at me `Oh, I hope you're okay with being the Factor of the Castle Fraser estates? I smiled and winked `You could have warned me' `I was just on my way to the stable, having sorted it out, to offer you the job'. Our eyes said more than words ever could, but something was still bothering me. `Athol, I think you let Gary off lightly there, my friend, I wouldn't trust him not to get up to all sorts of mischief now' `Archie, as Churchill said `If you're going to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite' `But, you' He held up his hand and turned away, I nodded and he walked off into the woods, I made my way back to the Castle, Forts was with Davy in the staff room, they both looked apprehensive as I went in. `Is everything okay Mr Campbell? I crossed to the drinks cabinet and poured myself a large scotch. `Forts, is that boy, what's his name, Carstairs? Okay? Forts nodded, `I stopped at the stables on my way back Sir and found him with Morag and Daphne, he is back in the Castle now' I nodded `Did he say anything else? `Well yes Sir, it appears Mr Morris wanted him to say things about me to Mr MacDonald and the other boys, his name is Edwin, Mr Campbell, I hope it is okay? I have asked him to help me with the horses' I nodded, choosing to ignore being called Mr Campbell; maybe things had become a bit to informal at the Castle. Poor Archie, he tried so hard, more than once he had struggled with this, to justify his rather informal approach he always quoted; Familiarity may breed contempt, but without getting familiar, you can't breed anything' As a teacher, he wanted his pupils to be treated as people in their own rights, not as ignorant children; best seen and not heard. `What's going on Mr Campbell? Davy looked directly at me. `Boy's, I think I am going to have to let Athol, err Mr MacDonald, speak to you first' I could see the concern my last statement, caused them both. `We are not in trouble, are we? `No, Davy, nor you Forts, now I can't say anything else, can one of you go and find Brookmeyer ask him to come here, then can you both wait in your room, I am sure Mr MacDonald will want to speak to you both again' `I will find him, Mr Campbell' Davy, nodded as he and Forts stood up and walked for the door. Thirty minutes later, Athol came back, he poured himself a drink, he turned to me. `I just can't believe this, why is everything falling apart, I really cared for Gary; perhaps he has a point, I am just not cut out to run this place' I hated to hear him like this; his bloody father made him like this, the old bastard; He had done nothing but undermine Athol at every turn and now he spent his whole time constantly doubting himself. `Well Athol, if you have given up already, perhaps you want to reconsider my appointment? His jaw dropped open, he gasped `What? `Well, this mess seems a lot worse because of me coming back into your life. It would be probably better, if I just left'. `Don't you dare' Tap, tap, tap He looked at me and shrugged his shoulder, mouthing `sorry' `Come in' The door opened and Brookmeyer's face appeared `Brookmeyer, come in please, have you met Mr Campbell? He is the new Factor in charge of managing the Fraser Castle estates' Brookmeyer looked at me `Good morning, Sir' I nodded back `Brookmeyer, it's Daniel isn't it, He nodded `Come and sit over here, we need to have a chat' Athol, indicated for Brookmeyer to sit in one of the seats. I got Athol's attention. `MacDonald, I am going to have to go and check the horses and then get back to Tundergarth, I will ring you later' Athol nodded, and I left. Mr MacDonald takes up the story It wasn't an easy chat with Brookmeyer, he was a troubled kid; how had I missed the deterioration, outwardly he seemed so strong, even calculating, and yet, all of his unpleasantness was spawned from unhappiness. He finally broke down and told me that he loved Forts, worshipped him even; from the first time he saw him with Davy at the Christmas meal, he had developed an all-consuming crush on him. He sobbed pitifully asking me why Forts didn't love him; worse didn't even seem to notice him. I could do nothing but comfort him; who, and using what words, could explain unrequited love, to one so terribly smitten. He admitted he had allowed Mr Morris to have sex with him, because his body was so like Forts; especially in the dark, he even imagined it was Forts when it was happening. He was so hurt that Forts and Davy, wouldn't spend any time with him; He had expected, that to change when Davy asked him to help out with the Aircraft recognition lectures, they were to do together, but they had never begun; now that was my fault. Mr Morris or as he referred to him constantly `Gary' had showed him the love that was missing in his life at the Castle; that was why he agreed to help cause Davy and Forts trouble; hoping eventually if Davy was out of the way, Forts might fall for him. How strange a troubled mind orders itself. I sat letting him cuddle up to me, both of us exchanging the human warmth so important to us all, he fell asleep, his head in my lap, I dozed off too. I was awoken by the telephone ringing, I eased myself out from under the still sleeping Brookmeyer, pushing a cushion under his head to support it. `Hello, Archie, you got back safely then? ...Good, good,...No, not yet...yes he is still with me...Gary? No I have not seen him again...I really don't know yet, I think I need to speak to Forts and Davy...Yes, I know its not their problem...I ...well I want to speak to them first...okay...yes I will...I appreciate you saying that...I love you too...see you tomorrow' I poured myself another drink and glanced round the room; this room, before becoming the staffroom, had been one of the main family rooms in the Castle. I shuddered, thinking about my father shouting at me in here; how useless and soft I was. I had that horrible feeling, I was being watched, I glanced round the room; nothing, my eyes came to rest on the portrait above the fire place. It was my father in full Highland regalia as Clan Chief of the MacDonald's; its eyes, his eyes were staring down at me; disapproving as always, his voice rang in my head, condemning my indecision; I deserved it. I raised my glass to him and took a drink; That bloody awful painting was coming down tomorrow; I was the Laird of Castle Fraser, not him. **************** Guy's Thank you for taking the time to let me know you're enjoying this story.
