Now to add that extra element, then I would know, if necessary, I could control Captain Leahy. I watched the twins slide under the bedding and creep forward up the bed, they stopped once their heads where level, with two sets of cocks and balls. ******************* Operation Pied Piper – Part 89b Davy takes up the story I was still smarting, I had wanted to go with Forts, Torcall and Digbey too London with Prince Dima; but as it was firmly pointed out to me, I now had responsibilities at the Castle, with the Royal Observer Corp Unit. I knew that Air Vice Marshall Digbey was relying on me to overcome the reluctance of the local Observer Corp unit and it's commander Captain Munroe; but they had made it clear from the start that they neither wanted us part of their unit or indeed to have anything to do with us. Consequently, the Observer Corp member who was supposed to be with us on every shift had until now, mostly failed to appear. I pondered whether it was because they didn't want to be babysitting, as they saw it, school boys playing at being observers, or may be it was just that the Observation Point at Inverurie was much nicer and warmer than being perched high on Castle Fraser's tallest tower, with little protection from the wind and elements? Who knew? Tonight; once more, the Royal Observer Corp guy had failed to show again, I spoke to Archie and he was happy for me to cover the shift by myself, if I was. Gregor had heard I would be alone, and had made up a flask of tea another of soup and a couple of ham sandwiches; he even slipped a piece of chocolate cake in my pack lunch, a veritable feast. I knew what had to be done and checked all the equipment was working and most importantly my pen, then phoned Inverurie sector control, to tell them, I was in position; I heard the guy on the other end of the phone turn to someone with him, laughing, "fucking kids are playing again tonight" he had sneered; Not letting it get to me, I decided to have a cup of tea. It was a beautiful clear night, I glanced at my watch just after ten O'clock, I wondered what Forts was up to; I had mixed emotions about the visit to London, in one way I wanted him to be the missing Prince, but I was also fearful about what that would mean. I sipped my tea and found myself gazing up at the stars; there it was, I felt a little warm tingle, I could easily find the Constellation Draco now, last year, I would have been looking for ages and still never have found it; but there it was; I raised my mug of tea in salute and whispered. `Watch over him for me' I was just about to have another sip, when I saw ripples on the surface of my mug; I stared intently, I wasn't shaking. I had barely thought "how strange", when I felt my ears pop, as the air pressure changed, then a deafening roar; I threw myself towards the floor, my arms flying to cover my head, as I landed face down; I glanced up, as a twin-engine plane thundered just a few feet above my head, over the Castle, its engine exhausts, spitting out flames into the night sky; My mug with its warm tea had completed a pirouette in the air before the metal mug came clattering down beside me. Christ, it had nearly hit the Castle, my mind was racing, I didn't recognise the tone of the engines, I had become pretty good at picking out Rolls Royce engines, these were different. I was back on my feet in an instant, kicking my cup hard against the corrugated iron surround in the process, my eyes were following the huge dark shadow, a ray of moonlight illuminated the plane; Christ, it was a German Me 110, a large twin engine, fighter bomber, it's pair of large cartwheeling swastika's emblazoned on the twin tail surfaces, sent a shudder down my spine. With my mouth hanging open and in total shock, I watched as the glass cockpit canopy and the black iron crosses on the wings flashed in the moonlight. Then my training kicked in, it was as if a switch clicked in my brain, I grabbed the binoculars and opened the observation book, quickly writing in the date, Saturday 10th May 1941. I began scribbling down the letters and numbers from the fuselage VJ(Black cross)OQ. To my amazement the plane seemed to circle the Castle a number of times. No, no it couldn't be going to attack us could it?, I ran to the door and shouted down for someone to come and help me; my voice met with silence from below, I ran back to the observation point and watched the plane complete another circle of the castle before heading off West. I grabbed the phone and rang through to the observer point at Inverurie. `Hello, hello, its Davy Thomas at the observation point at Castle Fraser, there is a German plane an Me 110, it just buzzed the Castle, circling us several times, its heading West' I gave over the fuselage number to a rather uninterested man at the other end of the phone. `Well, we have no other sightings, I hope you're not making this up? `NO, of course I'm not, I saw it! It flew off west, someone else must have reported it' There was a hummh noise from the other end of the phone. `Well, I will pass it on, but just as long as you realise how serious this is, where is the Observer Corp Officer? `There isn't one, no one turned up, it's just me' `So, you are the only person who saw this plane? `I am the only one here, yes, but I did see it' `If you're making this up and wasting my time, my lad , you will be in serious trouble, do you hear' `I am not making it up, honest, I did see it...' The phone went dead at the other end of the line before I finished speaking, "I am not making it up" I repeated to myself in the now still air. The metal roof door clanged open behind me, I looked round, it was Archie `Was that you calling Davy? `Yes, quickly, over here' Archie bounded over to me. `Davy, what is it? what was that noise? It sounded so close' I think, I fell into his arms; as the adrenaline left my body, I began babbling away telling him what had just happened. `It was German, a German Me110' Archie looked at me `Have you phoned it in? `Yes, they didn't believe me, you heard it didn't you? `I heard a plane, are you sure it was a German one? I nodded `Didn't you see it? Archie shook his head, staring out into the now quiet night sky `No, sorry Davy' The words had barely left his lips when two planes roared over us, we both caught a fleeting glimpse of them as they flashed by. `Is that it? Archie looked at me `No, of course not that's two spitfires...' My voice faltered to nothing, I felt Archie's eyes fixed on me, I didn't want to look at him. `Are you sure that's not what you saw before? `No, it was a German plane, I saw an Me110' Archie, quietly nodded `Okay Davy' `It sounds like you don't believe me either, look I wrote down the fuselage numbers' I pointed to my carefully recorded details, he nodded again. `Hey no, that's not the case, all I am saying is that I didn't see it, but if you tell me you did. That's good enough for me' He had just finished as the phone next to us began ringing, Archie nodded at me gesturing towards the phone and mouthing, "You are the Observer on duty". I reached for it. `Castle Fraser Observation Point, Davy Thomas speaking, how can I help you? Oh, it's you Captain Munroe...Yes I did...No of course I didn't, two Spitfires have just flown over us too...I am not making it up, yes I am listening...sorry Sir' For the next few minutes, I stood stunned as I was told off by Captain Munroe of the Royal Observer Corps, he finished by shouting, he had said this was a bad idea and now he had his proof; boys making up plane sightings. The receiver was slammed down, Archie had been watching my face during the call, I put down the receiver. `He called me a liar Archie, he said I had made it all up and he would be reporting me' Archie put his arm round me. `Come on, don't worry, if it was a mistake, it was a genuine one' I couldn't believe it. `You don't believe me either? I pulled away from him. I broke down in tears `I did see it, I did see it, just like I said' ** Athol takes up the story. It had been two days since Davy had made his plane sightings. Since then, it appeared every hour on the hour. I had been inundated with complaints from Captain Munroe, all of them about Davy, he was insisting, no demanding, that he be punished for making serious allegations and for reporting bogus plane sightings and recording lies in official documents, all made worse as it was during war time. I remained silent as he seemed to gloat repeating more than once "I told that Air Vice Marshall, children could not be trusted to do grownups work" `Well thank you again for your call Captain Munroe, you can rest assured I will deal with it' I replaced the receiver, my problem was that, as he clearly pointed out, none of the other observation Points had seen or heard anything, so what he was saying seemed to be the case, there being no other sightings of Davy's mystery plane, or the two Spitfires. I sighed and stared at my desk; surely Davy couldn't have been that mistaken, could he? I rubbed my eyes; I couldn't get my head round why he would make up such a story; it had to be true. I glanced at the picture I had of him and Forts on my desk, it had been taken that first weekend when we had been at Archie's farm and had gone walking. Both of them beaming, there arms round each other's waists: happy days, I stroked Forts face on the picture; that was the other thing on my mind, Fort's phone call, he had been away several days now in London and was only now going to be meeting the Imperial Grand Duke. He had wanted to know what was happening at the Castle and especially how Davy was? I felt bad, I hadn't told Forts about Davy's sighting or the trouble it had created, or the trouble he personally was in, no, no point in worrying him. I kissed my fingers and touched the picture. I loved them both. Torcall had had spoken after Forts and tried to describe the bizarre world they had found themselves in, the British Government, denying all knowledge of the Imperial Grand Duke for fear of offending our soon to be Russian Allies, yet smuggling them around London for clandestine meetings with various members of the Romanov's. I reminded Torcall, I had placed my son in his care and I expected him back in one piece. My heart had sunk when he told me, he had asked for armed Police to accompany them, Torcall and Digbey had both drawn service revolvers, both now convinced they were being followed by Communist Russian government officials; when he mentioned NKVD, I had had to grip my desk to stop myself collapsing. Torcall continued `Athol, I haven't told Fort's this, I don't want to worry the boy' `Torcall, I want my son brought back immediately, get him back here now' Torcall had spent the next thirty minutes assuring me, no guarantying me, that Forts would be safe, I prayed he was right. I kissed the photograph again and muttered a little prayer to a God I didn't know if I believed in. Now the Davy issue; I would have to speak to Davy later, I didn't want too, but I was left with no other choice, with no other sightings of a German plane reported; in fact, on the contrary the only aircraft reported in the vicinity that night was of two RAF Spitfires, it all pointed to the fact he had made a terrible error, that was, if he had not made it up, as it was being alleged. I hated to take any action against Davy without Forts here to support him, but I had no idea when Forts would be back either. I spoke with Archie; the only thing I could do and the minimum Captain Munroe would accept was Davy being removed from his position as Fraser Castle Observer coordinator. While Munroe had been on the phone, Archie was barracking me `Where was his bloody man then, as usual "no show" by the Observer Corps' I had had to put my hand over the phone mouth piece, `Archie please this isn't helping, ...yes Captain Munroe, I am still listening...Captain I would be very surprised if Davy could mistake a Spitfire for a twin engine German heavy Fighter Bomber; I had to try and defend the kid' I was then given a long and convoluted excuse why no Observer Corp staff person had been present and assured it would not happen again. `So, confirm what are you going to do with the boy? Munroe asked again, I could sense him gloating. `I will speak to him shortly; he is no longer your contact point and will be taking no further part in Observer duties here at the Castle' Archie shook his head `And good day to you Captain Munroe, yes I will pass on your regards to the Air Vice Marshall Digbey, when he returns' I replaced the receiver and spoke to no one in particular. `Odious little man' Archie nodded. `Archie, you know I don't want to do this don't you? He nodded at me `I just wish I had seen the bloody German plane, so I could back Davy up; all this stinks, it has more to do with that idiot Captain Munroe, being read the riot act by Digbey' Archie was getting madder and madder. I had to calm things down. `I think your right, Munroe seems to be actually enjoying all this trouble he is creating. And yes, it would have been good had you saw the German plane Davy reported, unfortunately you didn't and with no other collaborative sightings, Davy is branded "liar".' I took off my glasses `Archie can you get Davy, I had better get this over with' Archie nodded and shaking his head left the room. While I waited, I crossed to the window and looked down into the yard, I opened the window, suddenly hearing the diggers and trucks clearly. The ground outside the Castle door had been filled in covering the concrete tunnel that Captain Leahy's men had erected. Gary had insisted on and supervising the re burying of the horses skeleton and brass name plate; that was one fight I didn't need, so let him have his way. Now all we had was a large pit some fifty yards long and at least twenty feet deep running perpendicular to the entrance tunnel; this would become the underground shooting range, the excess soil was being stacked over near the Oak tree, Captain Leahy, seemed to think it would come in handy for the retaining walls of a new swimming pool; something else I, for the moment didn't want to think about. I spotted Captain Leahy he was with Lieutenant Brandt, both of them standing next to the pit, with two smaller chaps; who was that with them? I called down, all four looked round at me, Brandt and Leahy waved; ah it was the Smyth twins, I wondered when they had all met up. I chuckled to myself. Captain Leahy had spoken to me at breakfast time, apparently, he was going to have a contingent of German Prisoners of War helping very soon, they would be doing all the heavy work with the concrete for the main range, but he was waiting on Captain Martin; Torcall's aide de camp, getting back to him, with more troops as guards. Captain Martin, had been called back to Fort George the same day he arrived here and as yet Captain Leahy still hadn't heard anything more. I turned back to my desk, still chuckling about those twins. My heart sank as there was a knock at my door, it opened and Archie's head popped round. `I have Davy' I nodded `Okay come in' Davy looked awful, that usual happy go lucky face, contorted with what can only be described as self-doubt and despair. `Davy come in, take a seat' Archie looked at me `Do you want me to stay? I nodded `If you would please yes' Archie sat down next to Davy and reached and took his hand. Davy turned and weakly smiled at him, he mouthed "thank you". As Archie nodded and squeezed his hand, I got out of my chair, I loved Davy, I hated to have to do this, I crossed round to the front of my desk removing that barrier from between us and sat my bum on the desk. `Davy, I have to speak to you about the other night' RING RING RING RING RING RING Oh, for Christs sake, my phone was sounding like Big Ben, impossible to be ignored. `Excuse me one second Davy' I snatched up the phone from its cradle. `Hello' The operators voice answered `Putting though a long-distance call from Acting Air Vice Marshall Evans' The line clicked a few times `Hello, hello Gethin, is that you? You old dog, promoted again, how are you' It was good to hear my old friend, but he wasn't one for just phoning for a chat. `So, what can I do for you Air Vice Marshall?....... Of course, absolute discretion of course. Do I know who was the boy who made the call reporting the German plane on the night of the tenth? My heart sank `Err, yes, he is sitting in front of me, Gethin, surely you don't need to get involved in this, I am really sorry. ...Sorry, did you just tell me to shut up? Yes I am listening. God, WHO'S PLANE! He bailed out where? Eaglesham? But that's nowhere near here, he was apparently lost? for some time? flying an erratic course? trying to get his bearings? I found myself repeating each few words as Gethin spoke, my spirits began sawing like a bird, I felt myself grinning. `Well, I was about to discipline him at the insistence of a Captain Munroe, the local Royal Observer Corp commanding officer; You should probably know he is a retired army captain, that's not his rank now, although he uses it all the time. Who is the boy? Gethin its Davy, yes, yes, I will put him on the phone' I held the phone out to Davy, he looked at me and then at Archie, his face unsure. `Go on Davy, Air Vice Marshall Evans would like to speak to you' I handed Davy the phone, Archie had now stood and had hold of my arm `What's happened, what's happened? `Davy did spot a German plane, it's all hush hush at the moment, but it will be in the papers tomorrow. Davy spotted the Deputy Fuhrer Hess's plane, he was obviously lost and trying to get his bearings. `Are they sure? `Yes, Davy even recorded the fuselage identification number correctly' We both looked round at Davy as we heard him sob, relief engulfing his face. `Yes Sir, thank you, yes I will see you tomorrow, I will hand you back to Athol, Sir...sorry Gethin' I took the phone back, Archie was hugging Davy, who was looking both shell shocked and elated. `Yes Gethin, tomorrow, excellent, I will make sure a room is ready for you and Jeremy yes, of course, excellent'. The three of us danced round the room together, shouting and laughing, our kilts flying up. `Drinks for everyone, well us three, Davy I am sorry but we can't say anything until it is on the news tomorrow. Sorry' `I don't care just as long as I was right, I was beginning to think I had imagined it myself' Archie was playfully punching Davy in the arm `Bloody well done, bloody well done, Oh Athol, can I ring that Captain Munroe and tell him, please? `No, we are to say nothing, I understand Gethin is going to be speaking to him tomorrow, with a very special young man by his side' I rubbed Davy on the head, we were all grinning like Cheshire cats, Archie turned to Davy `Davy can I come too, oh please, I have to see this' We were getting hysterical, roll on tomorrow. I grabbed Davy and lifted him up off the floor, kissing him firmly on the lips. `I love you young man' `Hey what about me? `I love you too' Archie joined on to the two of us, and together we hugged and danced round the room. Well, you all know us so well now, Davy asked if he could spend the night with us, his little face trembling as he told us how much he hated going to bed without Forts by his side; how could we refuse. ** Torcall continues the story It was just starting to get dark, when we left the hotel, to make the journey to meet the Imperial Grand Duke. Forts was calm, he knew the sooner this meeting was out of the way, the sooner he could get back to Davy. I got him safely into the car. `Digbey, where is the Police escort vehicle? `There is no sign of it, unless that is it' He pointed to a dark car further down the road with two occupants. We set off into the traffic, the other car pulled out and followed. Forts was sitting looking out of the window; Prince Dima had gone on ahead, Digbey was sitting in the front with the driver, after fifteen minutes he turned and indicated for me to lean forwards, he whispered in my ear. `The driver thinks that car following us is not the Police after all, he is just going to see if his suspicions are right' I looked out of the back window of our vehicle, as we took a sharp right turn, Forts landed in my lap `Hey what's happening? I peered back; the black car had practically run down a pedestrian as it followed us. `They definitely are not the Police, get him down' Digbey shouted at me, I pulled Forts off the seat and pushed him into the foot well, he was stunned and glared at me. `What the fuck? `Be quiet and stay down' I looked back once more the car seemed to be gaining on us. I leant forward over Forts, shielding him with my body, my hand reaching for my service revolver. I heard Digbey shouting at the driver `Get us to the Home Office now! **************** Guy's Thank you for taking the time to let me know you're enjoying this story.
