I had even tried ringing the Hotel, apparently everyone had checked out a day ago leaving no forwarding address. Poor Davy was desperate to speak to Forts and tell him all about spotting Hess's plane and to just catch up with him, it had been several days now since they had spoken. Gethin was supposed to be arriving later today now; a day late, the news about Hess, had also been withheld from the papers a day longer; so, Davy had had to keep quiet and take the leg pulling from some of his peers; about seeing "ghost" planes. The movement on the surface of my tea, caught my eye, I reached for the mug and took a swig, the bloody digging was still continuing outside, it was shaking the Castle to its foundations, that and the incessant noise was driving me crazy. I sat staring into space how could forty-eight hours bring so many different emotions to the surface. I picked up this morning's newspaper, "Hess Here" screamed the headline, then a photograph of the crashed plane, the fuselage number Davy had recorded, clearly visible. It looked like Davy would get his revenge today for all the leg pulling; it was in the papers so he could now speak about it. I quickly scanned the article, I had hoped to see Davy's name as part of the story; you know the sort of thing, lone school boy spots plane and raises the alarm, but nothing, I suppose it would make the rest of the Observer Corp seem incompetent. Hopefully Gethin would be able to make it up to him, I folded the paper and placed it down. At that moment the sun glinted off the picture of Forts and Davy on my desk; I picked it up, and found myself speaking out loud, "Forts why haven't you rung, Davy is desperate to tell you his story and your Dad is missing you". I put down the picture; what could be happening in London?. My phone rang `Hello' The operators voice spoke `Connecting you to Mishcon Solicitors in London, go ahead caller' `Athol, is that you? Hello? Hello? `Yes, Mishcon it is me, have you heard anything? `No, afraid not, Major Farquharson collected the file containing the information we had managed to ascertain regarding Forts, sorry, your son Drageon's arrival in England and everything, we were able to find out about his uncle, who had brought him here following the death of his parents...I had only updated the file a couple of weeks ago, when a document finally giving his uncles real surname came to light' `What was that? `Sorry, do you mean what was the name? `Yes' `Err, let me just check with our copy file, it was Chikenoff, Dimitri Chikenoff, we found the papers when he changed his name on his arrival in England' `Oh God, why didn't you tell me straight away? `Athol, hello, Athol, sorry the line is terrible, did you say "Oh God", what's wrong? `We had a Prince Dima Chikenoff at the Castle; I wonder if he is a son of this guy? he was the one who took Forts back to London. oh no, Mishcon, I need you to find out as much as you can about Prince Dima Chikenoff; quickly, ring me back when you have anything' I replaced the phone handset in the cradle. There was a knock at the staffroom door, Davy's head popped round. `Davy come in, how are you my boy? `Good Sir, any word from Forts? I thought I heard you on the phone' I forced a smile, hoping he wouldn't see through me. `Come over and give me a hug, "Sir" indeed, you know to call me Athol when we are alone' I pulled Davy on to my lap. He had grown so much since I had first pulled him onto my lap, two years ago; I remembered how then his spindly hairless legs had dangled all gangly like, now I could feel the muscle definition and hairs against mine: he was a young man now, and if anything, I loved him even more. I gave him a squeeze. `Hey, look news' I picked up the paper. `Sorry, Davy it doesn't look like your sighting made print, I imagine they don't want to reveal about the top-secret observation point here at the Castle' He gave a chuckle and stared intently at the pictures of the crashed plane. `I got the numbers right though, look' I nodded and squeezed his knee. A tap on the door had us both looking up, the door opened. `Archie come in' `Hey, Good Morning Davy' Archie crossed to us and gave Davy a kiss on his cheek `Any news from Mishcon about Forts, Athol? I think my face said it all, Archie, gasped "oops" under his voice, Davy immediately looked at me, I tried to smile again. `What's happening? why are your solicitors involved ? what's happened? Is Forts okay?, Have you spoken to him? Can I speak to him? I glanced at Archie, my eyes pleading for help. My silence spoke volumes, I felt myself gripping Davy tighter, his eyes locked on mine. `What's happened? His smile had vanished and now his bottom lip was trembling. `Davy, I am sure there isn't a problem' He fixed his eyes on mine and began to shake. `What's happened? ** Davy continues the story Athol hadn't really convinced me everything was okay; he tried hard, but I knew he wasn't telling me everything. I went upstairs to Forts and my temporary room, I wanted a few moments alone to get my head in the right place, I picked up one of Forts shirts and brought it to my nose; breathing deeply, instantly feeling calmer as his smell took over my senses. He would be fine, Draco would be watching over him, I held up the ring he had placed on my finger only a few nights ago, I gave it a kiss and snuggled into the pillow with his shirt. `Davy, hello' I was in that moment of being neither awake or asleep, I heard my voice called again. `Gethin' I leapt up and threw my arms round him, `Hey what's this? Are you sleeping with my shirts now? I laughed as I hugged him `No, it's Forts silly, sorry' `I nearly didn't wake you, you looked so peaceful' He kissed my head and pulled me closer to him. `I have missed you, gosh Davy, your growing up fast' He stood up and I shuffled myself to the edge of the bed. `Come on then, lets join the others in the staffroom, I have a bit of an announcement to make' `About me? `Oh, you will have to wait, up you get, give your face a quick wash and flatten your hair down' A couple of minutes later we were heading down the stairs laughing, it was great to see him, we walked along to the staffroom and went in. `Jeremy, you're here too? Jeremy came over and gave me a hug `Good to see you Davy, of course I am here, he can't drive himself, you know' I glanced round the room, Athol, Archie, Captain Leahy, Lieutenant Brandt, McPhee, Brookmeyer, Gary, Gregor, Landers, Count Ouranoff and Niki, were all smiling at me, each holding a glass of Champagne. Gethin tapped the side of his glass and the room became quiet. `Gentlemen, On the night of the 10th of May; just a few days ago, an amazing thing happened, which could change the course of the War, Adolf Hitlers, number two, flew to Britain. Now, this news has only just been released, it was being treated as top secret, by the Government until today. So why am I here? Well, this young man Davy Thomas, was on observation duty on top of the Central tower here at Castle Fraser that night, he reported seeing a German Me 110 circle the Castle, he correctly recorded its details and phoned this sighting through to the Royal Observer Corps headquarters at Inverurie; where unfortunately, he was not treated with the respect he deserved. I am dealing with that matter and Davy here will be getting a full apology later, when he accompanies me on an inspection visit and to meet the new Commanding Officer.' I heard Archie, hiss `Yes' And then formed a fist and winked at me. Gethin continued. `Now, Hess's ME 110 had been spotted and picked up by radar, two Spitfires were scrambled to intercept it, but they were unable to locate it. Davy's sighting information, although dismissed by Inverurie was critical in the plane being picked up again and in Hess's eventual arrest and capture. Davy, I have been asked to thank you on behalf of no less a figure than the Prime Minister Mr Churchill, who was made aware of your story' There were a few gasps round the room `Gentlemen, please raise your glasses to this outstanding young man, who I have the pleasure and privilege to call my friend, Davy Thomas' `Davy Thomas' My name echoed round the room, followed by clapping and few whistles from Archie and Gary. Gethin held up his hand for quiet again. `Now I know someone is missing here today, someone very special to Davy. his "partner in crime" Fort's, but I am sure he will make it up to you on his return' More polite applause `Finally, I have been asked to present you with this' Gethin went into his pocket and brought out a small red leather box, he clicked it open, he removed a small golden badge and turned to me. `Davy, please accept this Royal Observer Corp clasp in Gold, and once again thank you' Gethin pinned the clasp to my fly plaid, then stood back and clapped with everyone else. Athol stepped forward `Davy, Congratulations, I am afraid you are going to have to go through all this again at Assembly in front of the whole school, well done. Now our marvellous Chef and his assistant have, done a little buffet lunch for us, Gentlemen please dig in' Archie was the first to get to me, `Well done Davy, bloody well done' He gave me a big hug. I thanked him, maybe he could see my sad eyes, he squeezed my arm and whispered. `And I know someone else who is going to be bloody proud of you too' I nodded. * `Everybody comfortable? Gethin laughed and smiled at me, Archie and I nodded. `Do you know, I have to put up with this every time, I have to go anywhere, he is too bloody cheerful by half' Gethin, tapped Jeremy on the shoulder with his swagger stick `Come on then, get going' With a jolt we were off and on our way to the Inverurie Royal Observer Corp, command post. Thirty minutes later we arrived, dead on time. The honour guard came to attention, Jeremy stopped the car and came round and opened the door for Gethin; he gave us a smile as he went to step out `Here goes, Smiley faces Gentlemen and remember what the King says on visits like this' Our faces gave away we had no idea. Gethin laughed and winked and putting on a posh voice said. `Hello, how do you do. And what do you do? Have you been here long? I hope they are looking after you. Oh, that's nice' He roared laughing again, `You don't think you get anything personal do you... it's all scripted, watch' Another wink, Gethin stepped out. The guard of honour presented arms, and an Officer came forward and shook Gethin's hand. Gethin turned to me and Archie and introduced us. `Davy, Archie, I am pleased to introduce the new Officer in Charge here at Inverurie. This time a real Captain, Douglas Whyatt' Captain Whyatt, stepped forward and shook mine and Archies hands. `Very pleased to meet you young man' He said to me, then turned `If you could all follow me, Davy, I would like to invite you and the Air Vice Marshall to inspect the Observers, they are all drawn up on parade for you' Gethin gave me a wink. `Here goes' We went inside the building, it had been a hall of some type, in front of us were two rows each of ten guys, some I recognised from working with them. Gethin and I walked down the first row; he stopped. `How do you do. Have you been here long? I hope they are looking after you' The guy replied something I didn't catch, Gethin smiled `Oh, that's nice' And he moved on, giving me a little wink. `Do you want a go? I blushed and shook my head: another wink, I loved him. The Inspection complete, Gethin moved in front of the two ranks, the room fell silent as Gethin addressed them, pointing out I was the young man, who had spotted Hess's plane first, he then tore a strip off them, leaving them in no doubt that he was displeased and expected to see a vast improvement under their new Commanding Officer, there were a few gasps as it dawned on them that Captain Munroe had been replaced. The inspection visit finished with photographs taken, with Gethin officially presenting me with the Observer Corp clasp in Gold; I would make the local papers if not the National ones. ** Archie takes up the story On our return to the Castle, I had joined Athol in his study, watching as he had picked up the phone, we had just been discussing the on-going building works, and he was about to tell me about the second call from Mishcon. I watched his face light up. `Hello, Torcall, finally, we have all been waiting for a call, let me get Archie to find Davy, what ...sorry speak up...Can I speak to Fort's? ...What? Athol gestured for me to wait. `Torcall listen, I have some news, watch Prince Dima, don't leave him alone with Forts, ...what? !!!! Athol's face flushed bright red, he spat the words into the phone `Torcall you promised me, my son would be safe and now your telling me you don't know where he is, is he still at the house with you? Well fucking find him? WHY? I will tell you bloody WHY! It is now clear it was Dima's father who changed Forts name when he brought him to England, changing his own name at the same time; obviously hoping to officially vanish. WHAT! ... No Torcall you listen to me, Dimitri was Dima's father he was married to his mother the Princess Anastasia Chikenoff, she was the sister of Drageons mother. Dimitri, fled with Forts mum and Dad to Europe, abandoning his family to their fate in Russia, I wouldn't put it past Dimitri to be responsible for Drageons parents deaths, it was obviously done to get Forts out of the way and to allow Dimitri to inherit, God knows what lengths they will go to now they realise he is still alive; the whole family is probably in on it' I could hear Torcall's tinny voice as he shouted back down the phone `But Athol, Dima, is the one who has been supporting Forts' Athol exploded again. `Probably to bring him out into the open, so they can finish the job, Torcall if my son is harmed, I promise you, I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND kill YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS, NOW, FIND HIM' As his rage ingulfed him, Athol slammed down the handset, grabbed the phone of the desk and threw it, I managed to catch it before it hit the floor. `Hey darling calm down, lucky I was in the school rugby team' I placed the phone back on his desk, I had never seen Athol, my partner this distressed, he slumped back into his chair his head in his hands. `The fucking idiots' He shook his head, his eyes those of a lost child. `Why did I let him go Archie, why? He began to sob, there was nothing else for me to do, but give him a big hug. I got up out of my chair. I knew Athol would calm down soon: yes he could be volatile, but he always got a grip of himself quickly, I knew then, he would tell me everything, I poured us both a glass as he sat with his head in his hands. ** Digbey takes up the story Torcall's face went white as he stood nodding, I could hear Athol's voice screaming at him down the phone, Torcall replace the receiver. `We have to find him quickly' I watched open mouthed as Torcall, went to his case and took out his service Pistol `You had better bring yours too' `Have you gone mad? Torcall what's happening? I know we haven't seen him for a few hours, but you know what these Russians are like, time has no meaning to them' `Get your gun, Forts could be in danger and we need to find him' `Danger! danger how?' He didn't answer, I quickly followed Torcall out of our rooms, again we tried at the door to the rooms Forts had been staying in, again no answer. With a kick the door burst open, I followed Torcall in. A footman peered through from the bedroom, Torcall advanced on him. `Where is Prince Drageon? `I don't know Sir' Torcall pushed past him and peered into the bedroom: nothing, he looked at me `Come on he is not here' Torcall started down the stairs, I was trotting along behind him, not a fit as he was, when I heard him start shouting. `You, you, stop' I got to the bottom of the stairs to see Torcall had the Chamberlain, by the throat against the wall. `Where is Drageon? The Chamberlain appeared to be playing dumb, until Torcall pulled out his service pistol and held it to the Chamberlains head, cocking it. `You will tell me where he is, right now' As white as a sheet the Chamberlain hissed, barely able to breathe through Torcall's grip. `He is in the Chikenoff apartments' Torcall let go of him, he slid down the wall holding his throat. `Oh no, quick Digbey, this way' Torcall turned and ran back up the stairs two at a time. ** Prince Dima Chikenoff takes up the story I couldn't take my eyes off of him; The Grand Duke, had wasted no time in getting tailor's and even a barber to attend to Forts; he looked immaculate in yet another white dress jacket and black trousers and patent leather shoes, The turquoise blue sash and glittering star of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle. He looked amazing. `Lemon in your tea, Drageon? Forts grinned at my mother smiling `Well, I usually have milk...err, your Highness' My Mother repeated `Milk? Forts still had a lot to learn about Imperial Court life: no one had milk in tea, my mother the Princess Anastasia her face fixed in a smile, as she turned to one of the footmen. `You have forgotten the milk, please get some' The look on the footman's face was priceless `Sorry did you say milk your Highness? She gave a little nod, but her eyes spoke volumes. I chuckled inwardly, as we sat with my mother, surrounded by splendour and luxury. Forts was being his usual charming self, he was sat next to my sister, over the last couple of days, they seemed to hit it off really well, I was over joyed he had settled in so well. `So Drageon, Dima tells me you live in a little Castle in Scotland and the man who adopted you is a Laird, the Lord of the Clan MacDonald; didn't you say Dima? I nodded `How lovely, I imagine he will miss you when you move here' Forts, glanced at me: he looked confused and was about to answer, but we were all distracted by a commotion at the door; it flew open and the footman who had been sent for the milk, came tumbling into the room, the milk jug spilling its contents as it smashed on the parquet floor. Forts and I got up from our seats and turned to the door, just as Torcall and Digbey rushed into the room, Torcall, brandishing his pistol, seeing Forts he exclaimed `Thank God' he pointed the pistol at me `You, over there away from him...Forts come here' My mother serene as always, barely flinched she always said "When you have had angry Russian peasants screaming at you and brandishing weapons, always stay composed, show them you are better than them". Now I knew what she meant. Her voice, clear and imperious, cut through the air `Can we help you gentlemen? I had my hands partially raised, my sister had gone to my mother side, Fort's was moving towards Torcall. `Torcall, what the hell is going on? Have you gone mad? Torcall looked directly at me, the pistol still raised. `Forts get behind me' `You, you stay there where I can see your hands.' Torcall turned back to Drageon, `Certain information has come into our possession. Maybe Prince Dima Chikenoff, the son of Prince Dimitri Chikenoff, the husband of the Princess Anastasia here. The same man who fled to Europe with your parents, abandoning the Princess and her children in Russia to their fates and who then after your parents mysterious deaths, brought you to London and placed you in a doss house having changed your name, to ensure you would never get a penny of your inheritance, fortunately he died before he could get a penny, but not before he had been traced by the Princess and Prince Dima here' Forts turned to look at me, his mouth hanging open, he turned to my mother. `It was your husband who abandoned me? Torcall spoke again `There is more, then Prince Dima hears of you and the family resemblance from Count Ouranoff, he turns up at the Castle, and convinces you to come down to London, why? Maybe you would like to say Prince Dima? Torcall stared at me again, spitting out the words `To finish him off perhaps for once and for all? `I would never hurt him, I love him' I spluttered out; my mother stood. `Major, please put away your gun, perhaps, we could all sit like civilised people, it is time for me to explain, please all be seated' Digbey intervened `Forts, Major, please, let us hear what the Princess has to say' They briefly nodded to each other, Torcall made sure Forts was next to him and I was a good few foot away, as my mother began. `Drageon, Major, some of this my son doesn't know, but it is obviously time for him to hear it. Firstly, you couldn't be more wrong about Dima, he loves Drageon; he has told me this from the moment he suspected him to be my sisters son. My husband Prince Chikenoff was a disappointment as a man, he drank heavily and gambled worse and you are right, he fled with my sister and her husband as our world crashed around us, again you are right, he did not come to get me or our children' She clasped her hand as she continued `Dimitri and Pytor had been very close as boys and grew up together; but it was always Pytor who was the more sensible. Dimitri, while we were members of the Royal family never had any money worries, all debts were paid, but we had limited personal money of our own. Pytor being a Prince of the Imperial Blood; was wealthy beyond your wildest dreams in his own right' Torcall, spoke out loud `So, your husband abandoned his own family, hoping to live off his cousin? Mother looked down `I prefer to think for Dima and Anastasias sake that he thought we were already dead, killed by the Bolsheviks' `But you weren't' `No Major, we weren't as you can see' As Mother went to continue, the door burst open again a voice rang out. His Imperial Highness the Grand Duke Truorwskoy, he came hurrying into the room. `I demand to know what is happening? He spun to face Torcall `How dare you Major pull a pistol in my home; and how dare you threaten a member of my staff' Torcall stood and was about to speak, when my mother spoke again. `Grand Duke, please, there has been a terrible misunderstanding, I fear caused by the actions of my deceased husband, which have come to light, please sit with us, maybe you can help explain' The Grand Duke glared at Torcall and as a footman brought him a chair he sat down. My mother continued `Alone in Russia and with two small children; I knew I had to get away, so many were being slaughtered' My mother let the words sink in. `Major, unless you lived through the fear and horror of that time, you have no idea how bad it was. Anyway, with the help of friends and family here in England, I managed to get out of Russia and arrived here; with Dima and Anastasia, making contact with the Grand Duke and others who had survived. I thought my husband would be here, but I could find no trace of him. When eventually the Grand Duke told me, my husband was alive and in England, he arranged a meeting, Dimitri, told me your father and mother and you had all been killed in Europe. We had no idea you were still alive and he had changed your name and fostered you out'. We all only found out that you might have survived, when Count Ouranoff contacted us about the ring Davy was wearing, that was when Dima, left for the Castle' The group sat in silence, before the Grand Duke spoke `Gentlemen this is all true, it saddens me to say, my nephew Prince Dimitri was a weak man, we will never know what actually happened in Europe, whether he was involved in the death of Pytor and Nataliya or not, but we do know that he pretended you Drageon were dead too' The Grand Duke's eyes began to water, he glanced at Drageon and then at the floor. `It would appear Dimitri, only had his eyes on the wealth of Drageons parents, that could be liquidated and moved across borders, certainly a number of pieces of Nataliya's jewellery, have come up for sale recently' Forts looked at the Grand Duke `So, there is nothing left? `On the contrary Prince, I purchased all those pieces back and many others, they are all being held for you, alas the estates in Russia are gone, but you still remain wealthy beyond your wildest dreams' Forts gasped and sat back in his chair, Torcall interrupted `But this all can't be true, Drageon isn't old enough to be you sisters son and the family heir' My mother spoke again. `Ah, you worked that out Major, I was just coming to that, Drageon is the same age as Dima, the entry on his certificate's in England are wrong: My husband didn't even get that right, alas. The Grand Duke pointed out the mistake on the paper work to me yesterday, both Dima and Drageon were born in June 1920, just before the final collapse.' She opened her purse and produced a small black and white photograph, `This is both of them in a cot together, during a family party' Drageon reached for the picture and looked at it intently, before handing it back. `So, I am twenty-one? My mother nodded. Drageon stood and bowed towards the Grand Duke. `I need to think; this is a lot to take in, excuse me' He began to walk towards the door, Torcall following him, Digbey remained seated. `Forts, please wait, please, I love you. Please, I would never have harmed you, please believe me' I called after him, but he dismissed my cry with a wave of his hand and was gone. ** Torcall takes up the story Forts hadn't spoken, I had taken him back to the suite Digbey and I had been using. `Forts, please can you ring your father and Davy, they are both really worried about you' Forts didn't speak, he crossed to the phone and spoke to the operator, he avoided looking at me the whole time. After a few minutes, he spoke `Dad, it's me, I want to come home, I am fine, is Davy there?' **************** Guy's Thank you for taking the time to let me know you're enjoying this story.
