Date: Fri, 9 Sep 2016 11:26:17 -0400 From: JOHN C Subject: Pops & Josh Thanks for reading. This is my first submission and first installment. So if I am to continue I'll need lots of encouragement and possibly story ideas. Please let me know what you think ... is it any good ...email jfamcam@gmail.comThanks again Pops & Josh Old Jon was 73 year old – he lived alone in the house now – the kids were grown and out – his wife tragically had passed in a car accident. Jon did the best he could coping with the house & being alone. His wife had been the communication link to his kids. Somehow he had a real hard time developing that special relationship with them. He guessed it was from his own childhood never feeling close to his mother or father. Then too Jon thought it might be from hiding his real self for so long. For the last 35 years of his marriage Jon and his wife slept apart. If Jon thought he was bi sexual at the beginning of his marriage; he knew as time went on that he was gay. He had closeted himself, doing the right thing working and providing for his 5 children and his wife even when she said she wanted out. As the years passed Jon suspected that the kids knew but it was never brought out or discussed. Jon and his wife continued to live the lie that was their marriage until her death. Truly he did love her but as the intimacy they had early in their marriage faded his gay side pulled at him all the more and they grew apart. As Jon got up this day Dec. 21st he went about his morning routine- the three S's shit shower & shave. Little did he know it would be a most important day? His son called about 9:00. He was a social work director for a homeless agency. It seems they had a homeless 14 year old. He was in the shelter system with his grandmother and she had just passed. His son normally would have called the child care agency but there was something about this boy. He felt a special compassion and then he knew what would happen. The children's shelter was more like jurvey hall. This boy was small for his age, a real light weight He knew the harder, stronger boys would make mince meat out of him. He was also touched by how he cared for his grandmother, waiting on the food line to get her a bowl of soup – nothing for himself and then spoon feeding it to her. He saw the tears as he found out she had passed. He saw the caring about how she would be buried. Talking to the boy, Josh Fitzpatrick he could also see the good in him – the politeness in the way he spoke- "yes sir – no sir – please – thank you" - he knew how the bank foreclosed on the grandmother's house- he could feel this boy's pain knowing he lost his parents and now his grandmother . He was moved and saddened by the tragic story. No not this time, he could not, especially at Christmas send this boy to the hall. So he did what he had done so many times in the past when there was problem. He called his Dad. He explained all about Josh; all about losing his parents and grandmother; all about the compassion he showed his grandmother and how he really did not want to send him to the children's shelter. "Could you help dad; maybe take Josh just for a week or two at least let him have a little of Christmas." Jon was slow to answer he knew he was not the man he once was. For sure the years had taken their toll. He wouldn't admit it to any of his kids but he had lost a lot of the old can do confidence from his youth. "Gee I don't know what if he is a trouble maker and steals from me "he asked. His son, Luke said he wouldn't have asked if he thought that was any way possible. "Dad could you just come in and see and talk to him". Jon relented; Luke seemed to want this so much. It was obvious he had special feelings for this boy but no where to put him is his 2 bedroom condo with his wife and own 2 kids. In the 15 years Luke had been working in the system this was the first time he allowed himself to become attached. No doubt it was a special case. Hearing the urgency in Luke, Jon decided to go that afternoon. He drove his old van into the city. He met with Luke prior to seeing Josh. Luke again went over everything and then they called for Josh. Jon was taken immediately by the beauty of the boy. Josh had dirty blond almost brown kind of long hair worn in a page boy style; his frame looked frail and skinny almost malnourished; his eyes a deep blue, soft and compassionate; he still had that young boy innocent face with just the beginning of peach fuzz on his upper lip and sideburns. Jon had to force himself to smile knowing all young Josh had been through. He already knew he would take Josh if he wanted to come with him. He didn't bother to ask any of the questions he had rehearsed on the trip in. Was he a thief; did he lie? He extended his hand for Josh who took it as manly as he could muster. He was plainly scared and anxious about what would happen to him now with the passing of his grandmother. Jon explained he was Luke's father and was there to see if he wanted to go home with him over the Christmas Holidays. He had plenty of room in his house. Luke added he would not have to go to the children's shelter if he went with his dad. Josh with his head down said that would be good then asked if he would able to go to his grandmother's funeral. Jon said "yes of course". There was little joy in Josh's face just resignation; he was a beaten young man who battled to save his grandmother and sadly lost. Luke tried to be upbeat and said "well do you want to get out of here now that this is settled" . Josh just nodded . " Josh do you want to get your stuff. While you do my dad has to sign a few papers ." And so in as little as five minutes it was decided Josh would be with Jon at least over Christmas while they looked for a more permanent foster family. Luke smiled a bit and thanked Jon over and over. He told him if there was any trouble to call him immediately. Yet he knew his dad was not the type to call for help. Mom was the one to call afraid that the old guy would hurt himself. So Josh and Jon got into his old van and head back home. Jon tried as he might to make small talk. He tried the sports teams, school all the things he could think of that a boy like Josh might be interested in. Al l he got out of Josh was a nod or a "yup". Finally he tried food with " are you hungry" got a "yes I guess I am". Jon was elated more than 2 words strung together. " "What kind of food do you like" "Ohh anything will do" Jon thought he would push a little. "Now Josh you are my guest for Christmas and I want it to be the best we can do for each other. I don't really know you so you have to help me. Tell me what you like. Where would your grandmother take you before you had to go to the shelter?" Josh looked up and stared real hard at Jon. He was trying to figure out whether this old man really cared the way his grandmother had cared about him. He thought maybe just maybe Jon did. Anyway he should try to be more sociable that's what his grandmother had always told him. "I really do like buggers ... Thank You" Jon stopped at this bugger place on the highway that was a relic from the 1950's. But the buggers were thick and juicy and good. He thought it would help make some conversation for him and the boy. Music played there was all oldies from the 50's and 60's. He told about how back then they had girl waitresses and they would be on roller skates. They would take your order and they would bring back trays with your order to go on the car doors. Josh was genuinely interested as he wolfed down 2 big cheese buggers and a load of fries. Leaving Josh said "Thank you those were the best buggers I've ever had and I'll always remember you got them for me" Jon was touched by Josh's sensitivity. They got to Jon's house and Jon showed Josh around the small colonial. He showed him his bedroom and the bathroom. He asked Josh what he wanted to do . Josh had been scratching and itching all the way home. Jon didn't want to say anything on the fear of hurting the boy's feelings but he had a bit of an odor around him. To Jon's relief Josh asked if he could take a shower. Jon showed him how to operate the shower and Josh was soon in the hot water. Jon had suggested he usee some oatmeal soap and dandruff shampoo to help get rid of the itching. While he was in the shower Jon asked " Do you want me to wash these clothes for you. They have a bit of an odor and is there anything in your pack that needs washing". A little sheepishly Josh answered "well everything in the pack is dirty but if you wash these clothes what will I wear." Jon said he would give him something to wear. "it'll be way too big but it'll be clean and warm. Just wrap a towel around your privates when you are through and we'll find something" Josh said OK and scrubbed away. He hadn't had a good shower since Granma had lost their house and he was enjoying the massage features of Jon's shower. He loved the hot water. For the first time in a long time he wasn't cold or hungry. He had Jon to thank for that and he made a mental note to try to tell him. As Jon unpacked Josh's stuff he was almost overcome from the odor. It reeked and all of it was torn or worn though ... underwear , tee shirts, the socks. He really didn't see anything worth washing. It was mostly rags. Even the underwear he had on was torn as well as his pants and shirt. My what a hard time this boy has had in his young life he thought. He put them in the washer any way.. not wanting to offend Josh. He thought to himself they would have to get him clothes in the morning. He closed the door and hoped the machine could do magic. Luke said social services would give him $500.00 for Josh's board. It really didn't matter much to him but now he thought a good bit would go to a new wardrobe for the boy. Jon was rummaging though his dresser looking for stuff that might stay on Josh when Josh came through the door. " Wow that felt good Mister ...; Say what can I call you. I don't want to call you mister and Grandma says kids should not call grown ups by their first name – it doesn't show any respect" " Jon smiled. " Well my grand kids called me pop pop but now that they are older it's changed to Pops. Suppose I could be your foster grandfather" "That'll be great, Pops. Grandma's husband died before I got to know him. When I lived with her; I always wanted a Grandpa." Josh smiled and almost went to hug Jon; started then stopped and thought better of it. He just wasn't sure. But this was so much better than the shelter. Jon thought to himself how resilient, youth is. A few short hours ago hungry and cold Josh was a beaten down young man. For sure he is not healed but at least he could smile again. Latter he would have to call Luke to tell him and to himself he gave silent prayer of thanks Jon found an old flannel shirt that had shrunk quite a bit from the wash. It was still way big for Josh but the best Jon could find. He was about to give it to Josh to put on when he noticed welts on his back and chest and arms. Actually, now that he looked all over Josh's body. "Josh do you know what those welts are on you." "Not really, grandma said something about their being bed bugs in the shelter " Jon checked the computer and the welts looked exactly like the bed bug bits. He got some hydrocortisone that he used for his eczema, had Josh sit on the bed and put a dap on each bit. He got his back first then his chest had him raise his arms check his legs from his knees to his toes. Then asked Josh if had bits on his backside. " can't see back there but it sure does itch soo I guess I do " " I really should put this on the bites. Is it ok if I lift up the towel " Josh thought about this new area of intimacy "if you are my grandpa I guess it'll be ok" Jon applied the ointment there were a dozen bits on his butt and upper thighs. Jon told Josh he no doubt had bites on his front as well but you should be able to get them yourself. " Go back to the bath room and take a good look. A dab of the ointment on each red spot like I did. You don't have to use a whole lot but get each one. OK" Josh was relieved that that Jon wasn't going to be inspecting his stuff. He was also grateful that he would be getting rid of the itching. While Josh was inspecting himself Jon was going crazy trying to find something to cover the boy's privates. With the bed bug thing he was not keen on him putting any of those clothes back on. He knew from the net that odds of the bugs being in his clothes was slim. But who wanted to take the chance. Those clothes need to be burnt and the pack too. He could roll up or cut off the sleeves of the shirt that took care of the top part of Josh but he had nothing for his bottom part. Josh was back again Jon gave him the shirt. As they both knew it wasn't going to be a good fit and they laughed a bit at that. With the top button, buttoned you could have fit two Joshs into it. The shoulders were at his elbows; beyond Josh's hands there was still a foot of sleeve; the bottom on the shirt was three quarters down Josh's thighs . Jon thought that was a good thing. It covered the privates. Jon got the scissors to cut off the sleeves. Josh was afraid of ruining his shirt. Jon told him. "He never wore it. What was a little too big for Josh was still way too small for him". Jon told him he didn't have anything for pants or even underwear. The best was the towel. He could pin it if Josh wanted. Jon told him he wanted to buy him new clothes and burn the ones he had. He told him that the state would give him money for it. He didn't want bed bugs breaking their beaks on his tough skin. Josh laughed a little at his lame but good natured humor. He certainly didn't want any more of the creatures either and he really could use new clothes. He couldn't remember getting anything new while he stayed with his grandma. She always got hand me downs from the thrift store. "But want am I gonna wear to pick out my clothes" Jon laughed and said " Your Birthday Suit" Josh smiled and said " Really, I know what a birthday suit is and I don't go nude to any stores and I'm not wearing this get up either " Jon laughed "ok ok, you look on the internet for one outfit. I'll go get it and under wear and socks and then you can go to the store for the rest. How does that sound ." "You gonna leave me alone in your house with all your stuff; aren't you afraid I'd steal something" "Josh, of course I'd leave my grandson in my house. Besides I don't think you would go anywhere in that fine shirt and towel." They both laughed at that. Josh was liking Jon, all the more; he might be old but he had his wits about him just like grandma did. Jon went and got his tape measure to get sizes. He did the measuring; Josh had the job of writing it down. Waste 28" Inseam 28" ( that was kind if tricky though the towel and up to Josh's crotch. Jon was pretty sure he felt a good size erection there. Although Josh didn't say anything) . There was a little tickling going on and the boy was feeling better and better about being with Jon. Trying to ease any embarrassment Jon said, " you know when I was a boy about your age I would get erections. You know woodies, stiffies boners" Josh felt a little flush is his cheeks. Jon went on, " all boys get them at all kinds of times. My dad told me, my penis has a mind of it's own and wasn't very smart" Josh said what do you mean. Jon went on, " Well you know your penis... can I say dick" "Yes" "Your dick is used to piss and make babies. To make babies it has to go inside a girl to give her the sperm to make babies. To go inside the girl it has to be hard and stiff. If it's not hard and stiff it won't be able to go in. You with me" Josh nodded " So when you're young like you are and your dick has just woke up to fact that it can make babies. That's called puberty. It gets excited to do it ...real easy. Even if there is no girl around. It's not so smart. It's like it is saying is it time yet... I have to be ready ... it might be time. You can be just getting undressed to take a shower and what does it say – IS IT TIME YET I'LL GET READY ... in the middle of school ... IS IT TIME YET I'LL GET READY. It wants to show off . Josh laughed and laughed at Jon's explanation. He had had sex education in school. But not like this. But as he thought about it .. it made sense. "So" Jon went on "you shouldn't worry about poping a boner ( are they still called that these days) " "Sometimes more woodie or stiffie" "Got ya anyway don't worry if you get one at an inappropriate time ...don't be embarrassed. It's just your dick not being so smart" "Thanks I never thought about it like that..Thanks a lot Pops" "and if anyone ever teases you about you .. you know getting excited just tell the story and your dick is not so smart." " Gosh thanks Pops" "Tomorrow morning first thing I will go to the store and get you clothes. You gonna be ok in that get up till then" "Guess I' m gonna have to be. I kinda like this shirt it is really warm." "You can have it but I would wait to wear it outside until you've grown 6 inches and put on about 100 pounds" It was getting to be supper time. Jon asked "you hungry what do you want for supper? I can make some fish... do you like tilapia?" "I don't eat fish that much .. don't think I ever had tilapia" "Want to try it? I like it" "Ok " So Jon made up his tilapia dish with Cajon spice on the fish, baked potatoes with onions ,peppers and mushrooms . He had spinach for green vegetable. Jon had wine with his meals and all he could offer Josh was water. The boy was ok with that but kept looking at the wine. Jon asked "Have you ever had wine " "A couple times with my grandma. She said it was good for your heart and relaxed you. But only to be had in moderation. Sometimes She would give me a glass" So Jon gave Josh a short glass and he enjoyed it immensely. Made him feel a little more grown up. Josh said diner was great and asked if they could have it again some time. Whether he was just being polite or whether it was the wine . It made the old man feel good. Josh helped with the after diner clean up. They settled down to watch a little TV. Actually, Jon put on a Netflix movie that Josh picked out. It got to be close to 11:00. Jon took his medication. "What's that" Josh asked. "Oh just some blood pressure medication" "Why do you take it" "Well about 3 or 4 years ago I had a little mishap. It was a very minor stroke and this will help me from having another. Can you do me a favor?" "Sure" "If I ever forget to take it in the morning or at night remind me" " Sure will, I don't want you getting sick" Jon smiled again more to himself. He was liking having Josh around too. Luke was right he is a good boy and life has given him more shit than he deserved. "Well' Jon said "what do you think? is it time for bed. I know these old bones of mine are ready?" Josh said "I guess so" Jon thought why is it that young people don't ever want to go to sleep. They went up stairs Josh first, he was a lot faster. Jon followed for sure a bit slower. Josh settled into bed "Don't you have to use the bathroom boy" Josh said "no" Jon began wishing he had a young prostrate and bladder. He took his nightly piss, went into Josh , ruffled his hair a bit while saying good night. Leaving the room he added ,"I hope you'll be happy here Josh, I'm going to try to make that happen for you" Josh didn't know what to say. He remembered his grandma and she said " Always return a kindness given to you" All Josh could say was, "Thank you so much I am already happy that I'm here with you" Jon went into his bedroom it was too late to call Luke but he sent a text for him to read his email and sent a rather long email telling him all about his day with Josh. He also told him about the bed bugs and the shelter needed to be fumigated. Lastly he thanked him for sending Josh to him. During the night it was often the case that Jon had to get up to take another piss. His shut down plumbing just didn't work real good at night. He marveled at Josh how he didn't need to go before bed and then slept all night. As he passed Josh's room he thought he heard whimpering.. was Josh crying. He stuck his head in and soon the rest followed. He was right Josh was upset and all in a fit. It looked like he had been crying for some time. Gently he shook him. "Josh what's wrong" "My nightmare is back. Could I stay with you? Could I Please!!" So Jon got Josh up. The towel , that had covered him , had fallen off. Jon gathered it up half looking for the pin as he did. Josh was in quite a state shaking and sobbing. He just couldn't seem to stop. Though the tears Josh said, "I'm sorry to be such a baby" "It's alright; it's really alright" Jon said as he held him. He pulled back the covers and let Josh get in the double bed put the towel around him again and got in the other side. "Will you hold me please; If anything bad happened my dad would hold me" So Jon wrapped his arms around the fragile boy; holding him tight. One arm under his neck the other arm over his chest. His chest tight to the boy's back; his middle down on his butt; one leg draped over both the boys legs. Jon kept whispering over and over "It's all right you're safe here" After what seemed like forever, the sobbing stopped. Josh's breathing became more regular. He was asleep. Jon went to pull his arm ever so slowly from under his neck. As soon he went to move it; Josh grabbed it with both his hands and held it so tightly. Jon was amazed at his strength. It must have been the result of his episode. So Jon tried to sleep that way. It was very hard considering his secret (the gay thing). He wanted to kiss and hug the boy and make love to him. For sure he wouldn't ; he wouldn't molest this frail boy, he wasn't that kind of monster. He had never touched a boy inappropriately and certainly he wouldn't start now. But it didn't make going to sleep any easier. Finally, exhaustion kicked in and he fell to sleep. The next morning Jon awoke with Josh still cradled in his arm and his arm was numb beyond belief. As he struggled to free it Josh woke and immediately sat up and helped Jon to move his arm. The boy was so upset he thought Jon had lost use of the arm. Jon was a little apprehensive as well since it was on the side of his body where he had the stroke. But ever so slowly he began to get feeling back into it. He asked Josh to help him move the arm around to stimulate the blood flowing. Josh did it so carefully. He really was liking the old guy and was mad at himself for being such a baby. It took about 15 minutes but feeling in the arm came back. By then Jon's bladder was about to burst. Josh didn't want to let go of Jon's arm but he had to piss really bad. Jon said the arm was ok and started for the bathroom Josh happy that the arm was ok bolted for it as well. "You gotta pee Josh" " Yup I've been holding it" "Well me too.. come on we'll share the damn toilet" Josh was at the point that it didn't matter it was either piss in the toilet or on the floor; Jon was the same way. So there they were at the toilet the boy with piss plummeting out like a water fall and "Pops" with the littlest stream that was more like a leaky faucet. Josh of course was done in a minute Jon was taking his time. "so how come it takes so long for you to take a leak Pops" " it's my damn prostrate once it gets working too hard to hold it back it doesn't want to turn on again. It's a bitch getting old boy but I'm still working on the alternative. Now go get that towel and quit showing off your equipment" Sure enough Josh had popped a boner. Josh smiled and yelled back "you know my dick's not all that smart I tried telling it, it wasn't time." Then did what he was told. "Go amuse yourself with the TV while I take a shower. Then I'll make some eggs for breakfast" Jon felt a lot better after his 3 s's. Josh asked what he could do to help and Jon had him make the toast and coffee. Fried eggs, turkey bacon, toast and coffee was as good a breakfast as Josh had ever had and he wolfed it down. "Pops you sure feed me good that was great" Ok well we better get to work on your wardrobe. "What kind of undies do you like? Boxers , boxer briefs, regular briefs or skinny briefs, white or colored" Josh had never had the chance to pick out underwear he just wore what he was given. His grandma had frequented the Good Will for most of his clothes. As he thought about it the skinny briefs were kind of sexy and he liked that; white ones he thought. He also decided on white crew socks because it was winter and blue jeans and a pull over grey sweat shirt. So Jon had his shopping list. Josh said he would clean up the breakfast dishes so Jon could be on his way. Jon went to the local Kohl's. It was closest. He picked out a kind of orange & grey shirt with a design on it; blue jeans, the skimpy white briefs Josh wanted , the white socks, the hoodie sweat shirt. Jon also got him a hair brush and a tooth bush. Jon got back in a little less than an hour. Josh had busied himself on Jon's computer. He immediately shut it off as Jon came in. Jon noticed and figured he was on a porn site. All 14 year old boys are curious about sex. He gave him the bag of clothes. Josh immediately tore into it. Without any modesty he dropped towel and put on the under ware. They clung to his hips barely covered his package and seamed tight to Jon. Without a doubt Jon could see a bit of a boner growing inside. Josh started vto smooth them over his ass and down his front. "What do ya think Pops?" he asked Jon smiled and said he could never wear anything like that but they looked great on Josh as long as he didn't mind showing so much. "Ohh no Pops all the boys wear these. They are a little sexy but I like them. They feel Great!!" Josh said as he ran his hand over his growing erection. "Ok as long as you are happy ; try on the jeans and the shirt" Josh took off Jon's old shirt and pranced around a little in his new under ware. Jon couldn't help think Josh certainly was one great looking boy so smooth and cute with his innocent face. Josh ran over to Jon and gave him the biggest hug and kissed him on the cheek saying thanks. Holding the almost naked boy aroused Jon as well but he controlled himself and said " Ok, ok I'm happy you like your under ware but put the shirt and some pants on before someone passing will think I'm a pervert or something. " Josh frowned a little fake frown and teasingly said "but I like wearing only my briefs. Don't you think I look sexy ?" "Yes very sexy but you are not going to get the rest of your clothes going out like that." Josh tried on the jeans next and to Jon's surprise they were not regular fit but skin tight. As Josh stuffed his little bubble butt into them he said "wow how did you know I like the tight fit." Jon shook his head "I thought I was getting the regular fit". "Well you did good" as he pulled on the shirt. Josh went to check himself in the mirror. Jon watched as Josh turned one way and then the other to see how his butt looked in the mirror. He gave Jon another hug and said "you're the best grandpa". Jon made turkey sandwiches for lunch and together he and Josh made up a shopping list. Jon said a warm winter jacket, Josh... another hoodie sweatshirt, Jon ...dress pants and shirts, Josh.. another pair of Jeans, Jon... a dressy sweater, Josh.. maybe new sneakers please, Jon... dress shoes, Josh.. maybe 2 more casual shirts. Josh asked why the dressy stuff then Jon said " remember you want to go to your grandmother's funeral . It's usually a bit of a dress up thing." Josh had put it out of his mind then said "will you go with me." ... "of course" Josh put on his new hoodie sweatshirt and torn sneakers and they went back to Kohl's There was a little disagreement of the 2nd pair of jeans. Josh wanted another pair of the tight fit; Jon thought the regular fit. Finally Jon said " Be a little practical here boy what if you have to scratch yourself; you'll never get to the itch in those tight things." Josh relented. He had to. He had never been treated to so many clothes in all his life. He was beginning to feel like a kid again in just 2 short days with Pops . His fears of what would happen to him were being washed away with Pop's care. He knew it and he made up his mind if there was anyway he could stay with Pops he was going to do it. Jon stopped at the market on the way home asked Josh about pot pies. Josh said chicken was his favorite. So Jon got 2 chicken and 1 turkey. Josh said" how come 2 chicken." "Because my boy teenage boys like you are eating machines." Josh smiled and thought how lucky he was. When they got home there was a message from Luke. He hoped Josh's grandmothers funeral would be tomorrow and was trying to make the arrangements. Luke didn't think a wake would be needed but he did need to know where Josh had gone to church with his grandmother. Jon had Josh call Luke. "We went to St Francis in Queens" he said. Luke needed the address but Josh didn't know so Luke asked about his grandma's house. He knew the address and said they walked to church it was only a couple of blocks. Luke tracked down St. Francis from there. Luke called and got the pastor, Father Rick. He was very saddened to her about Josh's grandma's passing and the hard times that had befallen them. Father Rick – "She was a wonderfully kind woman.. Helped out at the church all the time doing the linens...helped out with religious education too .. the kids just loved her.. I had occasion to sit in on a couple of her classes ..she made God and Jesus seem like her best friends and transferred it to the kids .. she even helped in the food pantry..Never took anything for herself but towards the end when she was losing her house she asked for Josh ; she said the boy was so skinny.. she had Josh help out by severing mass too. ..Just a fine, fine woman, we've missed her terribly." Luke – " Do you know if she had anything insurance or a plot with her husband" Father Rick –" You know I think she has a plot right here in our cemetery.. I'll check and get back to you.. As far as insurance I have no idea.. I think she cashed anything and everything trying to keep the house for the boy.. we were all shocked when she had to move out.. we would have helped in some way but she never let on there was a problem.. I can tell you this the parish will do everything pro bono and first class .. she was just a fine, fine woman.. what arrangement have been made for the boy , Josh?" Luke – "Well the normal thing would have been to send him to the children's shelter but I just couldn't do it.. I called my dad and asked him to watch over Josh temporarily and he is there now. . Dad said it took a little bit but he is beginning to come around.. acting more like a kid than his saddened grandmother's care giver.. I know this is very short notice but I would love to have the burial tomorrow to have it behind Josh so as not to be hanging over his head at Christmas.. Do you think I am crazy father?" Farther Rick – " Wow it will be a chore but because everyone thought so highly of her and as long as we have the plot she is to share with her husband ..I know getting personal and bringing your father into the situation is not what social workers are trained to do... that was very kind of you.. I agree for Mrs. Fitzgerald and for Josh and because you are going the extra yard I think it is God's will that I at least try... it should be before Christmas.. I have a bunch of people to call.. I pray the people of St Francis will feel as I do on this.. Leave everything to me.. I'll get back to you at the latest tomorrow morning – If we can pull this off. I'll plan mass for 3:00 " Luke - " Oh wow thanks so much Father Rick – You are the best" Father Rick - " No I think Mrs. Fitzgerald is the best and you young sir are doing God's work – so I have to help you " With that Father Rick went to work – Organist, song leader, florist, grave diggers, alter severs, ushers were all called they all groaned at first but when Farther Rick said Mrs. Fitzgerald name they all quickly agreed and pro bono was not an issue. Somehow she had touched them all; had done something to help, that made a real difference in their lives. Each one remembered and told Father Rick their story about Maggie Fitzgerald. When Father Rick brought up the pro bono they protested that they could not take any money for this kind woman's last moment. Father Rick was elated his last call finished at 8:00 that night by the grace of God they had accomplished a small miracle. He couldn't wait so he called Luke on his cell phone. Luke was amazed and thanked the good priest profusely. Now he had work to do. The mortuary that serviced the shelter all to frequently Luke thought, had to be informed. They asked if it was to be an open casket service. Luke thought on that and said yes if they could have the body ready for the 3:00 funeral mass. And the dress he was asked. Luke thought they could provide one and if necessary he would pay for it. They agree and said they would deliver the casket at the appointed hour. At the shelter, Luke had a notice put up telling of the service. They often did that when someone passed while in their care. The people at the shelter said it made them feel a little more human and not looked down upon by society. Luke was good at healing these folks who had fallen on hard times and often found a way to get them on their feet again. He often said "There but for the grace of God go I" He called Jon and told him of the arrangements. Jon was equally amazed at the work of Father Rick and of Luke as well. Jon explained Josh had got new clothes during the day and he would have him there all spit shined and polished. He agreed to meet Luke at the church at 2:30. Jon and Josh had their pot pies . Josh did eat the second pie Jon had got for him. "See I told you ...you could eat two" Jon said . " Yeah well if you keep feeding me like this I'll get fat" .." You have a far piece to go before that happens." Then Jon explained about the funeral mass. He told Josh being the closest relative would be first behind his grandma's casket as she entered the church and as she left the church. At the burial he would be the last to lay a flower or a hand of dirt on the casket. He explained that it was ok to cry most people did. It will only show everyone that you loved your grandma. He said funerals and burials are a sad time but only for the ones here on earth. He told Josh everything he had heard about his grandma was that she was a special, kind, woman. Josh had tears in his eyes as Jon said now she will be in a better place with Jesus and not have to worry about banks and losing the house or any of the problems here on earth. And that she will watch him grow into a fine young man and be so happy that she was able to help him along the way. Josh couldn't hold the tears back any longer and as the flood gates opened he gave Jon the biggest hug he had ever given anyone in his life. Finally he said "thank you for explaining that to me. It'll make it easier for me tomorrow . Will you sit with me please." Jon "Of course Luke and I will both be with you and I for one will consider it a special honor. You'll wear your new clothes and you'll take a shower before we go. You will be all spit and polished ... Your grandma will be bragging to Jesus –" See him there, the one in front of the church that is my grandson .. Isn't he special." A little smile came over Josh's face and he asked "do you think she really is proud of me". Jon "Well I'm just getting to know you and I would be ". They watched a little TV and went up to bed. As Jon took his middle of the night piss he hear Josh whimpering like last night. He went and shook him . Josh said " the bad dream wouldn't leave him alone" Jon " well come on with me then I'll keep you safe" And so again Jon took Josh to sleep with him he held him tight but not with his arm under his head. During the night it had snowed and was still at it in the morning. Jon's knees and back ached from the change in the weather. Yet he knew there was snow to be shoveled. 8:00 Am time to get up. So Jon went about his morning ritual. While in the shower he heard Josh knocking at the door. "Can I please piss please; I gotta go bad". Jon - "Ok come on in" Jon marveled at the sound of the waterfall coming out of Josh. " you know maybe if you took a leak at night before going to bed you wouldn't have such a urgency to go" Josh - " But it wouldn't be as much fun" Jon- " go amuse yourself with TV or something while I finish up. Then I'll make breakfast". Josh –" I can make breakfast... let me do it please" . Jon – " ok anything to let me take my shower in peace. Do the bacon first then the toast and coffee finally the eggs. The eggs take the least amount of time. Got it" Josh- " Yup, I won't do your eggs until you are out" Jon finished his shower and completed his morning routine and got dressed for the snow. He was glad Josh was here; he knew he would help with the shoveling and save his back some pain. In the kitchen Josh dressed in his new hoodie sweatshirt and tightie white briefs was busy as a beaver. Jon had one of those Keurig coffee makers his cup was done and Jon's was a push button away. Bacon was just about done and the toast had just popped up. He was enjoying making breakfast grandma never let him in her kitchen. It was new to him and a little bit of a challenge. Jon's instructions had served him well and he was feeling real good at his accomplishment. As Jon came in "My oh my Josh it looks like you have things pretty well in hand here... Did you help your Grandma by making breakfast. " " Grandma didn't like me messing with stuff in her kitchen. She was pretty protective of it. It was her place. I pretty much stayed out of her way except to take out the garbage. She let me do that. I enjoyed doing this it was fun. I hope it tastes ok" " Well let`s find out" Jon sat down to eat. A few minutes latter Jon said " Hey, that was good Josh; you are a good cook and everything was nice and hot. That's not easy to do." "Thanks Pops all I did was follow your directions" " Well would mind cleaning up and I'll get started on the snow" Josh thought about that for a moment and said " there is no way to say this polite like so I'll just spit it out. The priest at my old church told me it's not good for older folks to that much snow shoveling. He said make your grandma stay inside and not help. What was good for her has to be good for you. Suppose you stay here and I'll get the snow." Jon was taken back by Josh. He certainly liked the idea of the boy helping with the snow. Nothing got his old back hurting faster than snow shovel or using his snow blower. He smiled at Josh and said "well you go get dressed I haven't seen too many boys shoveling snow in just their bikini briefs. And we'll both get the snow." Josh was gone like a flash and a minute latter was standing in front of Jon with his new heavy jacket – and his hoodie and his new jeans and sneakers. " Ok Pops where is the shovel" " There are several in the lean to shed on the side of the house. The snow blower is in the shed in the back but maybe you better let me start that for you. Hey your feet are gonna freeze in those sneakers. Let me get you a pair of boots that are small on me. Maybe an extra pair of socks and you can get by." Josh got another pair of socks and sat down to change his shoes. He thought Jon was sure looking out for him. Jon brought out the boots and sure enough with the extra socks they fit good enough. Jon always seemed to come up with a trick to make something work or fit. He gave him a set of ski mittens that would keep his hands warm as well. Jon said "there ya go my little hero ... helping an old man out – thanks Josh" Josh just smiled and out the door he went. Josh got a shovel and started on the drive way. There was at least 6" of heavy wet snow, really heavy to shovel. About 15 minutes later after cleaning up the kitchen Jon snuck out the back door and got the snow blower started. He was really glad he had gotten this new one that was self propelled. The only problem with snow like this was the chute would clog up pretty often but it still beat shoveling. He found Josh working on the drive way doggedly struggling with the heavy stuff but making steady progress. "Hey Josh lets see if this baby can make this job easier." He showed him the controls and how to operate the machine. " One thing never ever put your hand is the chute on by the blade with it running. I once knew a fellow that got his hand chopped off doing that. Do you hear me " "Yes Sir" Josh retorted and took off with the blower. Sure enough it clogged a few times and Jon came over to clear the chute with a stick. So working together with Josh doing most of the heavy stuff they got the snow cleared and then cleared off the van. Going inside... "Wow thanks Josh you are a big help" Josh felt some real pride receiving Jon's compliment. He was little embarrassed and looked down at his boots and then Jon's sneakers. "hey I am wearing your boots and you are wearing sneakers... thought you said my feet would freeze what about your's." He realized Jon had done what his grandma would have done to keep him warm. Jon said "well I forgot to get you boots when we were at the store yesterday so that was my fault ... you were in all the heavy snow and doing all the hard work... so you needed the boots more than I did ... please don't be mad the important thing is your feet are warm and dry as are mine" Josh " how can I be mad – I just think you are too nice to me and you should take care of yourself" Jon similing - " ok I'm glad we are still friends .. why don't you go take a shower and get dressed for the funeral... I want you to be spit and polished for your grandma and I want her to see you in your new dress up clothes...I'll get changed too and then make us some lunch.. I think we should leave a little early the roads in New York will be a mess from the snow." Josh went over to the old guy and just to be sure he knew he wasn't mad gave him a hug. "thanks for taking me Pops." Luke due to the weather decided to hire a bus for the folks who wanted to go to Maggie's funeral from the shelter. It wasn't easy to get but he found a company that had a school bus available. The bus held 50 people he felt that would be more than enough. He scheduled the bus to be at the shelter a half hour early and people to be ready at 2:00 for the half hour ride to queens. When the bus pulled up he was surprised at all the folks who wanted to go. They all couldn't fit on the bus. He had to make an announcement that the bus only held 50 people and a fast count had the crowd at well over 100. After he told them he could only take 50. The shelter people gathered quickly and it was decided that the folks who had trouble walking would take the bus. The rest started walking immediately. He was told they might be a little late but they would be there for Maggie. They all seem to have a story of Maggie's kindness to them and they were going bus or no bus. Luke asked about their route and told them he would send the bus back to get them. Luke was beside himself at the compassion and courage of these people. With little money – no place to call home – not knowing where there next meal was coming from; here they were walking from Manhattan to Queens in 6" of snow to pay their respects to Maggie Fitzgerald. Just amazing he thought to himself... they are a selfless lot certainly not without their problems but in times like this he thought they were the best the world had to offer. Jon navigated through the snow slipping and sliding a bit and but they were making steady if not slow progress. Just as it got to be 2:30 Jon got to the church again he had planed it pretty good. He parked in the little church lot and was looking for Luke when the school bus pulled up. Luke jumped out got the people assembled by the church steps. Jon and Josh hailed him. Luke told about the group that was walking and he was going back to get them. Jon said he could follow with the van in case they still didn't fit. Ten minutes out they meet up with the tried and cold group trudging along in the snow. Their feet wet and cold. Luke packed the school bus but still there was 8 that couldn't fit. Jon said if they put the seats down in the van , he & Josh would get them there if he had to pile them one on top of the other. He had 3 on each side and 1 at the back door and 1 against the front seats. They sure were squeezed but they were out of the snow and warm. One old black fellow yelled out "OK folks be on your best behavior now and please no farting." That brought a howl from everyone. They all said hello to Josh and remarked on his fine new clothes. Josh was pleased but also sad because grandma had said he should always share his good fortune with those who had less than he did. One of the riders was his friend Billy from the shelter. He had looked after Josh and helped him get food for his grandma – when bigger boys tried to take what little Josh had he stood up and protected him. Billy was a real friend. They got to the church and there was quite a crowd gather besides the shelter people there were a bunch from the parish as Father Rick had spread the word. Father Rick was outside greeting all the people. Thanking them all for coming... he especially extended a glad hand to the shelter folks like Luke amazed by their compassion. A few minutes after 3:00 the hurst pulled up, the crowd hushed. Luke had arranged for 6 strong fellows from the shelter to act as pall bearers. Certainly they weren't dressed in fine suits like the driver but they handled Maggie's coffin like it was the Mona Lisa. Father Rick nodded and the casket moved forward. Out of nowhere a bag pipe played and what seem like an angel's voice sang "GENTLE WOMAN, QUIET LIGHT MORNING STAR SO STRONG AND BRIGHT GENTLE MOTHER, PEACEFUL DOVE TEACH US WISDOM, TEACH US LOVE" The hymn played on Father Rick kept the procession going forward Josh followed flanked by Jon and Luke. Everyone was tearing up Josh turn to Jon and held his hand as tears ran down his face. At the head of the church the coffin was opened and Josh saw his beloved Grandmother with a fine white dress and pearls around her neck. She had a peaceful smile on her face and Luke thought the mortuary had done a marvelous job. Father Rick said a very compassionate funeral mass. His homily was more like a eulogy except when he turned to Josh and told him how proud his grandmother was of him. Josh almost felt he could feel her close by like Jon had said talking to Jesus. It got to time for the eulogy and Luke got up and related some of the many stories of kindness that Maggie had done while in the shelter. He remarked what a amazing woman she had to be to have so many come to this service many who had walked miles in the snow. The St Francis parishioners were astonished to hear of that. Such was the gift of love that Maggie shared with all and he remarked that Josh was a very, very, lucky boy to have had her for his grandmother. When he was done the whole congregation was tearing up even Father Rick. Speaking of the hardships that she endured and the lose of her house Luke ended with the words he often thought taught to him by his dad "There but for the grace of God go I." The service pressed on communion and with it everyone had a chance to pass by Maggie and say good bye and then the procession out of the church. Again the bag pipe sounded and the angel's voice was heard. "Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm worn Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me home When the darkness appears And the night draws near And the day is past and gone At the river, I stand Guide my feet, hold my hand Take my hand precious Lord Lead me home" Josh held on to Jon the whole way. Here was a man he had just met but he relied on him now for so much support. The procession went to the grave site it had been covered over to protect it from the snow. Father Rick said a couple more prayers told Josh and everyone that for sure Maggie Fitzgerald was in a better place with Jesus and we had to be happy for her there without the troubles of this world. It would be harder for all of us to go on without her but ( looking at Josh) said Maggie had made each of us a little stronger . He also said that the ladies of the parish had prepared a little reception in the basement of the church. Then out of nowhere the bag pipe sounded. This time without the angel's voice but by now all knew the words. "GENTLE WOMAN, QUIET LIGHT MORNING STAR SO STRONG AND BRIGHT GENTLE MOTHER, PEACEFUL DOVE TEACH US WISDOM, TEACH US LOVE" All walked past the coffin at the grave and put a rose on it provided by the parish. Josh waited with Jon and Luke as he put the flower on the coffin Jon heard him say " I'm sorry grandma I wasn't strong enough to help you get better. I love you Grandma... I'll never forget you or all that you taught me... Please have Jesus help me to find a place where I can belong" Then it was over to the reception the ladies had prepared sandwiches and cakes with coffee tea and juices. The shelter folks tried to be polite but for many it was the first food they had seen this day. The parish ladies made sure they all got a bag of left over to take with them. Josh spied his friend, Billy and came over to him. Billy hugged his friend and said "his grandma would be proud seeing him all dressed up. " Josh said " I have a foster grandfather, I call him Pops. He got me the clothes and made me dress up. Burnt my other cloths said they had bed bugs. I even got jeans and a hoodie and new sneakers and sexy under ware like all the rich guys had at school." Billy – " good for you ...you deserve a break ... Are you gonna be with him then permanently." Josh – " I don't know I sure would like to. He has been awful nice to me. Luke said it would only be temporary when he said I could stay with him. You know he is Luke's dad. Maybe if I pray and ask real nice maybe it can become permanent. But hey what about you? How's your mom doing ... is she off the drugs?" Billy – " I hope so she has been acting real good lately and says she is clean and I should kill her if she ever goes back. I wouldn't of course but it's good to hear her say stuff like that. Luke has her fixed up on a job training program so I'm hoping we can get a place some day. You know the worst part is having to leave the shelter every day lugging your stuff around and then going back and it has been getting colder and colder." Josh – " I feel so bad I wish I could help. It was so good of you to come to grandma's funeral ,thank you" Billy – " awe it was nothing .. hey thanks to your grandma , I got out of the cold and had some fine eats too." Josh – " Will you do me a favor. Try on my jacket . I want to see how you'll look in it. Don't be mad if I give you something" Billy – "what" Josh – " Just try it on" Billy tried on the jacket and they went to the boys room to see it in the mirror. Josh – " I think it fits you fine. Pops got it a little big for me. Do you like it? Billy – " Yeah of course I like it but it's your's and your Pops will be so mad at you if you give it away" Josh – " I have my hoodie. It's real warm and you have been a real good friend. Please take it as a Christmas present... please, please." Billy didn't know what to say. Josh was so insistent. Billy sure was out in the cold a lot. It was a real warm jacket. But how could he take it from the boy who has just been made an orphan. " No, I don't think I can take it Josh. You don't know for sure where you are gonna be .. how you are gonna live... I would love to have a jacket like this... it sure is warm .. I mean you finally got something good for yourself and now you are giving it to me. " Josh had tears in his eyes he so wanted to give Billy the jacket. He needed it more than he did. Some how he just knew Pops would take care of him. He prayed for it since he meet Jon .. he prayed for it today at the funeral mass.. he almost heard his grandma say stay with Jon he is a good man. Then he got an idea. Josh – " Billy let's go ask Pops. If he says you can have it will you keep it" Billy- "I guess so " So the two boys went to find Pops. Josh explained that Billy was out in the cold a lot; didn't have a warm coat and he wanted to give his jacket to Billy for a Christmas present. He explained Billy has been a real good friend helping against some other boys who were being mean to Josh. But Billy said he couldn't take it. It was too much and Josh would need it himself. Jon –" Well I did get that jacket for you Josh; so you would have a warm coat." Josh – " I know Pops but I have my hoodie and the jacket fits Billy real well. He needs it more than me. Please say it's alright for me to give it to him. People at the shelter don't hardly get any Christmas presents. He's been my good friend, I really want to do this. Please say yes Pops; please." Jon didn't know what to say. He was amazed by the extreme generosity and compassion showed by the boy. Just about, literally giving the shirt off his back. Jon thought a bit ...this shouldn't be discouraged... it's a good thing; I guess I can get him another jacket. Jon – " Josh, as much as you and I want to help all these people; we can only help a little bit. I am not a rich man if you keep doing this we will be going hungry. But I guess we can help your friend Billy. I guess this a lucky day for you Billy. I'm glad to see you are a real friend and wouldn't take advantage of Josh. You are a fine young man and we really would like you to keep the jacket. What do you say Billy, I'll get Josh another one" Billy – " Oh wow gosh I don't know what to say. I never got a present like this. Thanks so much Josh and thanks too Pops. I feel real good about Josh being with you. I know you will take care of him. And I won't let him give away any more of his stuff. You two just made my Christmas." Josh and Billy hugged and Jon smiled knowing they had just turned a sad day into a good thing. Then the two boys went and hugged Jon almost knocking him down. Yes he thought this was a good thing. Luke came to tell Billy they were heading back to the shelter. "Hey where did you get that sharp jacket, buddy ?" Billy smiling from ear to ear – " It's a Christmas present from my good friend Josh. Pops said it was ok for him to give it to me" Luke looked at Jon " Dad what are you..." Jon – "Hush now Luke don't make a scene... it's just a jacket " Luke – " But, Dad you can't .. you don't have that much money" Jon – "Now Luke, don't get folks upset. It was Josh's idea and a good one .. and never mind about how much money I have" Luke seeing there was no talking about it - "Well, Billy it sure looks good on you. We better get ready to go back. We are going to take two trips with the bus. Dad, I think we'll also need your van. I don't want folks walking and risk getting their feet frost bit. It is turning cold out there. The weather report said 10 degrees tonight. I want to get these good folks to the shelter where they'll be warm. " Billed added – "That weather is not fit for man nor beast " Josh and Billy wanted to visit as long as possible so they decided Billy would ride in the van and help Pops with directions. Jon decided to get the van warmed up real good before having folks go out in the cold. This time they fit nine shelter folks as Josh and Billy shared the front seat. The same old black fellow jumped in complimenting Jon about how clean and warm the van was. When everyone was loaded on the trip back to the shelter they talked about the beautiful service and the songs. It made Josh a little sad and he teared up some. Billy saw and putting an arm around his shoulder; he squeezed his friend real tight. Billy whispered "I'll always be your friend, Josh". They exchanged smiles and their bond grew stronger. Then the old black fellow ( Jesse was his name) congratulated everyone for being on their best behavior and especially not farting. Everyone laughed at that. The two boys nearly fell out of the seat from laughing so hard. The old guy said farting jokes always worked . Soon they dropped their passengers. Josh and Billy said their good byes and promised to keep in touch. Jon drove back to the church to be sure Luke didn't need any more help. When they got there the bus and Luke was in the parking lot. Luke said he was just about ready to return to the shelter and all the folks fit on the bus. Josh got up on the bus and walked from the back to the front shaking hands and thanking them for honoring his grandma so by coming. His eyes glistens a bit they all said his grandma was a special lady and in a much better place. As he was getting off he thought of Jessie, the old black fellow. " Jesse said to tell you were all real good on your best behavior and thanks for ..." The group all shouted " NOT FARTING" everyone laughed. Josh didn't feel quite so terrible getting in the van with Jon. On the way home Jon complimented Josh for giving his jacket to Billy. Josh – " Well it wasn't so hard to do. Billy is a good friend and won't you help a friend, Pops. " Jon _ "Yeah but just about giving him the shirt off your back is still a little bit beyond. Not many folks would do that. I'm just saying it was a real good thing and I'm sure your grandma is smiling and so proud of you. I know I am." Josh – " Pops you have been so good to me. You got me all those great clothes. Guys like Billy and all the people in the shelter have nothing and I mean nothing. Every day at 8:00 they have to get out and they have to stay out until 4:00. They are on the street trying to stay warm, trying to find work, trying to find food. I couldn't think of him out there like that and being so cold and me in your nice warm house and a warm jacket in a closet. Hey he doesn't even have a closet. What kind of friend would be like that. My grandma would be so mad at me and she would be right. You don't do that to anybody least of all a friend." Jon just smiled for sure Josh had a very compassionate and generous heart. Jon – " So Josh what do you think you got from your grandma. What do you think?" Josh puzzle over that for a bit. Then said, "she gave me a bunch of love when I had no one to love me. When my mom and dad died she was there and she always shared and made sure I had the best she could give. I love her so much for that" Jon – "For sure that is special and she gave you other treasures that you can't buy in a store. She gave you a kind, compassionate and generous heart. Don't ever lose it, you may not ever be rich in money but if you keep your heart just as it is you'll always be rich in love. Wasn't it something all those people at the funeral. A bunch from the shelter walked miles through the snow just to say good bye to your grandma. I sure would have liked to meet her. You know, the people at the church the bag piper and the singer and the grave diggers usually get paid for all that they do. But Luke said for Maggie Fitzgerald they did everything for free. Some even gave money for flowers and the food after. They all remembered something she did to help them and said this was a way to pay back. Always remember how great a woman, your grandma was . Not great in money and riches like that but great in treasures of love." Josh - "Wow I never really thought of it like that but you are right. Thanks greandma. I'll try to make you proud." Jon –" Hey we are almost at the old fashioned hamburger place. Can you go for a couple ? We can get them to go and eat and relax at home." Josh – "That sounds great, thanks Pop's" Jon order up two cheese burger for Josh and one for himself as well as a large fries and 10 minutes latter they were home at the dining table. Jon poured a glass of wine for himself and asked Josh " want a little wine . It's been a hard day maybe it'll help to relax." Josh nodded. Josh – " Thank you... Why are you so good to me" Jon – " I don't know that I am so good, Josh. For sure, however, long our time together will be I want it to be a good time in your life. You have had a couple bad breaks and yet you are not mean or angry about it. You are caring and respectful to all people. No doubt the training of your grandma . I respect that and I am all alone in this old house what kind of a friend would I be if I didn't share it with you." They ate their cheeseburgers and drank the wine. They talked about the funeral some more... about how great the singer was ...Josh said "at first I thought it was an angle. ..I never heard bag pipes before .. not in person that was amazing ... it made me cry but I'm glad you told me what you did.. that by crying I was showing how much I loved my grandma and never to be ashamed of that. So I wasn't " The more they talked after a bit Josh didn't seem quite so sad. Jon told him "funerals were a real good thing ... they give folks a chance to say good by ... they were a time to remember the good things about the person who died... they were a chance to show their love and let the sorrow they felt in their heart out... We all have to go sometime son.. you just don't want it to be a burden to others or have a lot of things undone... I think your grandma was pretty well prepared... for sure her most troubling thing would have been what would happen to you... but she trusted in Jesus." Jon by explaining about the funeral and a little about life as he understood it ...was helping Josh to heal. It wouldn't happen overnight but he planted the seeds ... he knew the boy was strong with a good heart and in time the funeral would be a good memory ... knowing so many people loved his grandma. They watch a little tv actually a net flix movie. They sat on the old couch. Josh huddled close to Jon. Way before the movie ended Josh was asleep cuddling into Jon. Somehow, the old man found the strength to pick Josh up and carry him upstairs. He decided to have him sleep in with him. No need to have nightmares tonight that was for sure. So he laid him on his bed and gently undressed him, shoes, socks, sweater, shirt, and pants. He looked so cute in his sexy boy briefs and tee shirt. Quickly covered him so he wouldn't get cold... took his pee and his meds and got into bed... Josh started to stir but Jon quickly held him to keep the nightmares away ... Josh returned to a peaceful sleep. Jon was worn out too by the day's events and was quickly asleep as well. The morning brought bright sunshine glimmering on the day old snow. Jon thought another Christmas Eve, it'll be different without Janie his wife. She was the heart and sole of the family, she was the great communicator. At times like this he missed her more than normal. Thinking about it he got a little misty. Well got to get the day started he thought and slowly got out of bed so as to not disturb Josh. His bladder was aching; he slept though his midnight pee which was a good thing getting a whole night's sleep. Now I just gotta get the thing turned on so I can get empty. He struggled with it but it all worked out. Jon was in the shower when Josh came knocking at the door. "Pops can I piss please I don't want to do it on the floor." Jon's retort was "you better not; you'll be washing it for a week" Josh came bounding through the door and emptied a water fall into the toilet. "Hey, Pops how did I get upstairs. I don't remember coming up stairs or getting undressed or having the bad dream and getting in your bed" "Well son I carried you and put you in my bed I didn't want you having bad dreams" Josh heard it a second time he called me" son" not sport or buddy or any of the other names adults sometimes use but "son." Maybe just maybe I will be able to stay here. "Oh then it was you who undressed me and held me during the night. I thought that was a dream. A real good dream ; I thought I was little again and my dad was with me. I felt so safe Pops. Thanks for doing that for me" Jon couldn't say much "Well you were a pretty tried Josh you had a real busy day." "Pops can I make breakfast again" " I don't know what's left in the refrigerator I need to go to the store. See what's there. I think I'll just have toast and coffee. My stomach is doing flip flops this morning." Josh went down to the kitchen and took inventory. There was a 2 eggs and 2 slices of turkey bacon left, plenty of bread for toast and the soy butter and the coffee. Josh wondered if Pops' stomach was flip flopping because there was only enough eggs and bacon for one. He went up stairs and told Jon there was 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon. You sure your stomach is bothering you we can each have 1 egg and 1 piece of bacon." No you go ahead my wife would kill me if I was having eggs and bacon 3 days in a row even if it was Christmas. This way she won't be jumping up and down in her grave getting everyone upset. " Josh had to laugh to himself. He might be on the old side but he sure had his wits about him. At the end there grandma was losing her memory a bit. Pops didn't seem to have that problem. So Josh made himself the eggs and had Pop's coffee ready when he walked in. A moment later the toast popped up and he buttered it for Pops. "Hey what service, I can teach you a couple more breakfast items, like French toast, scrambled eggs and oatmeal if you want even pancakes." "Really wow I would like that... I like cooking." Pops got up and went over to the frig. Josh with nervous scared look on his face asked– "what did I forget...did I do something wrong?" " No son I just thought I would have marmalade on my toast I think there is some in here someplace. Ahh got it. Wanna try some it's a little sweet and tastes a little like oranges." Josh relaxed especially when Jon called him "son." It was so many years ago when his dad had called him son like that. It was special to him; he hoped beyond all hope that it was special to Pops as well. "Ok if you say it's good" "Best thing since sliced bread" Josh liked it. Jon told him what he had to do today. Go to the bank and the super market and a couple other stores .He was kind of hoping that Josh wouldn't tag along. He wanted to get him a present for Christmas and didn't want to deal with his prying eyes.. As he was explaining this he got a constant stream of text messages. His son Edward wanted to know what Josh might like for Christmas .. how about an xbox console? Lizzy .. we could get the jacket or xbox games ... Luke how about a jacket Maureen does he have a tablet and Joseph what kind of music does he like. Jon wanted to get him a phone so no matter what happened he would always be able to call Jon or anyone in the family even his friend Billy. Then he knew after shopping he thought he should clean the house a bit. Jeanie had always made a point of having the house extra nice looking for the holidays even if no one was coming over.. Jon said, "well what do you want to do tag along with me or relaxing here. Josh bought a bit, I think I'll hang out here. Josh was thinking while Pops' is gone I'll show him how grandma taught me to clean up. So as soon as Pops' was out the door Josh got to work. First things was to clean up the breakfast dishes; then on to the living room dusting everything in sight; next the dining area and upstairs to the bedrooms. And he got out the vacuum and vacuumed the entire first floor as well as the stairs to the second floor. Of course next was the bedrooms and hall up stairs. Then he went into the bathroom and scrubbed the toilet, sink and bath tub. He could not find a mop so got down on his hands and knees to wash the floor. Next back to the kitchen he straightened and a organized the counters. Then with a damp sponge he washed the floor. It had taken him the better part of 3 hours. He was drenched in sweat but satisfied that he had done a good job. Jon's first stop was the bank. Luckily they still had the money holders that he would give to his children. He had really got away from shopping unless it was doing something on line. And as a much younger man when his kids with small he really appreciated some extra cash after Christmas.
