He spoke briefly with the clerk. They said he needed to be tested so they would know what classes to put him in. Pops went over the testing with Josh and left. Josh was brought to an empty classroom and waited for the teacher. Another much bigger kid came in as well. "Are you a new kid too?" Josh "Yup that's me... New kid two" The bigger boy smiled at Josh's lame joke but he was studying Josh intently. "Say did you ever play CYO basketball for St Francis in Queens." "Yeah I did a couple years ago. How did you now ?" "You don't recognize me do you. I'm Jesse. Mr. Inside. You're Mr. Outside Josh Fitzgerald" "Wow, who would have guessed. What are you doing here." "My dad's work got transferred to Jersey here. So we moved out of the city. He picked Hopewell to because the schools are good here and they have a pretty good basketball program. Do you still play? Whatever happened to you? " Josh fumbled a little bit. But then remembered Jesse was really a good kid. So he thought he would man up and tell the story." "My grandma lost her house a couple years ago. After that happened we had no place to live. We were homeless. After a month or so we got into a homeless shelter. It wasn't too clean but we each had a bed and were off the streets. So we lived that way for almost two years until grandma died a little before Christmas. The shelter director, a really nice guy called his dad to see if I could stay with him. That's where I am now. Pops is like the grandfather I never had. So no I haven't played basketball in two years. I would like to play again. Pops says." Josh laughed a bit." Pops says it's like jerking off you never forget how " Jesse laughed at the jerking off part too. But inside his heart was aching for his old friend. Here he was now a 6 foot 1 and 165 pounds pretty much all teen age muscle. Josh was still 5 foot six inches like he was two years ago. If anything he looked like he lost weight. He thought I guess being homeless can do that to a guy. Jeez he looks like a stiff wind could knock him over. "My dad said he was going to talk to the freshman coach to see if I could have a tryout to join the team. Do you want me to have him ask for you as well?" "Jeez, I don't know if I'm ready. I haven't touched a basketball in a longtime." "Come on tryout with me. At least give me some moral support." Josh not wanting to let an old friend and hopefully a new one down relented. " OK but if I get embarrassed you got to stick up for me." " Hey when we played CYO you always stuck up for me. I can't forget that. You always said it was me who got you the shot. Hey we are both new kids; we got to stick together. I promise nobody will give you shit or for sure I'll pound them." "Jeez Jesse don't get violent now" "Well you know what I mean. It's good that you are here now. I just want you to know you can count on me." "Thanks Jesse, I'm glad; you are here too. You can be new kid one." The teacher, actually student advisor, Mrs. Martin, came in and administered the placement tests and snuck in an IQ test. Jesse placed at grade level and was approved for all college prep courses with average to above average intelligence. Josh tests came back crazy. A year or more below grade level but intelligence was tapping on genius. Jesse was given class assignments and told to join his math class. The teacher held Josh back. " I want you to take the tests again, Josh" "Something wrong, you don't think I cheated do you." "Oh no Josh, you are an exceptionally bright young man, as a matter of fact, some would grade you a genius. But your grade level is way below where we are at here. Why do you think that is? Yet your records all indicate an A plus student." "The school I went to in the city was so easy. I mean stupid easy. I never had to study and always got 100's on the tests. I never thought they were good teachers but my grandma said it was the only school I could go to." Mrs. Martin thought a bit about what to do. Perplexed she asked Josh. "Well we have remedial classes which you could take and for sure you would get up to grade with them or you can go into the college prep classes and be behind and playing catch up. What do you think is best." " I don't suppose I would get extra help in the college prep courses. Would I?" "Probable not as much as you would need." Josh's brain was working over time and then it hit him. "What about I take the remedial on an accelerated schedule while also being given the college prep assignments that way I won't fall farther behind, then when I'm up to grade you transfer me in. Could you test me every week to see when I can get out of the remedial? I'll probably get bored out of my mind. I've never had a problem with school work, Mrs. Martin. " " Well, that is a very ambitious program. But if you think you can do it I'll see if it can be arranged. According to your intelligence score you can handle it but it will mean a lot of extra work to catch up." " Mrs. Martin you got to understand were I'm coming from. My parents were in an accident when I was 8, both died. So I went to live with my grandmother then when I was 12 the bank foreclosed on her house and we were homeless. We got into the shelter system in New York city and lived there for 2 years. Just before Christmas my grandma died. If it wasn't for the kind shelter director and his father I would be in some half way house getting the crap beat out of me everyday. It will be a pleasure to have extra work to get a good education and I know my Pops will help me all he can." Mrs. Martin now understood all that wasn't on the school forms. She made a commitment to herself to always be there for this special and brave young man. She set up a schedule for Josh with remedial subjects and immediately sent notices to all the college prep teachers that she wanted a schedule of assignments and course material ( books ect) for a new student. She sent a notice to all the remedial teachers that Josh was to be given an accelerated course and he was to be tested week by her. Without going into a lot of detail she said Josh was easily very qualified to be taking college prep courses but due to his past school's poor performance was behind in grade level. But she expected him to be at grade level in a month or two at most with an accelerated program. Josh found Jesse at lunch and as expected the only class they had together was gym but they also had homeroom together. They were both disappointed. Josh told Jesse the situation with his classes. Jesse said he could help him because they both had the same college prep classes where Josh would only get the assignments. They arranged to always have lunch together so Jesse could bring Josh up to date on the college prep classes. They exchanged phone numbers as well. Just before the final bell Mrs. Martin had Josh report to her. She had a stack of books on her desk as well as the assignment for the coming week from all the college prep teachers. She told Josh she would coordinate getting his assignments to the teachers. She said he could drop them off any day after final bell. She was always there at least an hour past final bell and if he needed any help at all he was to tell her. She said if she found out he needed help and didn't ask he would be in big trouble. Josh got a text from Pops that he was there to pick him up. With the load of books he had to carry Josh was most grateful. Jesse's mom was there to get him as well. "She asked how it went." " You know mom some times you forget how good you have it. If I ever complain again KICK ME OR SOMETHING." "Why Jesse what happened" "Do you remember a kid on the 5th & 6th grade St Francis CYO team, Josh Fitzgerald? " "Sorry Jesse I don't think so" "Remember he was Mr.Outside and I was Mr. Inside. Jeez at the end of a game he never, never missed a shot. When everyone was congratulating him he always said it was me who got him the ball." "Oh yeah Jess he was very good and such a good team player" "Well, I meet up with him today. We are both new and took the placement tests together. He is orphaned; his parents died when he was 8; he lived with his grand mother; she lost their house he's been homeless living in a city shelter for the past 2 years. Now his grandmother just died on him as well. He hasn't grown at all if anything he's lost weight. The school he went to didn't teach up to grade level here now he has to take remedial courses as well as try to do college prep assignments so he won't fall behind in the college prep while he catching up with the remedial. I just feel so bad for him every break has gone against him." "Wow he's certainly had it hard. How did he land here is Hopewell?' "The shelter director, set it up for his dad to take him. He says he's the grandfather he never had till now." "Well that is a good thing Jess. I know you will be his friend and look out for him. Anyway we can help you just tell me or your dad." "I told him I would ask dad to ask if he could have a tryout too when he asks for me. But I'm not sure if that is a good thing. I'm guessing he's only 115 maybe at most 120 pounds. Kids will knock him over like a feather. " "Why don't you talk to him some more before you talk to dad. Make sure it's something he is really ready to do. If he still can shoot like he did in grammar school maybe there's a place for him. If he hasn't touched a basketball in all that time he might need to practice. " "Good idea. I'll call him latter." Pops asked how Josh's first day went. "Well remember the kid I told you about that I played basketball with, Jesse. Guess what he's a new kid too just like me." "Really, so you already have a friend." "So that was the good thing. I didn't do so good on the placement test; although I tested genius on the on the intelligence test." "Really, I'm living with a genius that sounds strange. I looked at your record and you got straight A's in every course." "Well yeah it seems that the city school was not teaching to the grade level of Hopewell high school. So I have to take remedial courses and do the college prep assignments on my own. It's the best way until I catch up . It was my plan and Mrs. Martin agreed to it. I'll be tested every week and be moved into college prep as soon I catch up. She thinks no more than 2 months. I hoping if I really am genius IQ I should be able to do it in a month and than be in the same classes as Jesse. He said he would go over the assignments with me at lunch which will be a help." "Well let me know any way I can help. Of course you can use the computer whenever you need to and maybe I'm not so old that I can't look up stuff for you." "Thanks Pops I told Mrs. Martin you would help. She's a nice lady and I think she kind of likes me especially after I told her my story." "How so?" "Well she was acting like I couldn't do it. So I told her where I came from and that working to course studies would be a pleasure compared to what I've already been through. That's how I got her to agree." "Good for you Josh; I happy you were able to speak up for yourself." "I told Jesse what you said about basketball." "That it was just like riding a bike and you would never forget." "Nope, that you said it was just like jerking off and you never forget how once you learn." "Jeez Josh for sure he thinks I'm a pervert." "No he was falling down drunk from laughing." "He talked me into trying out for the team. His dad is gonna talk to the coach. Pops you know he's 6 foot 1 and 165 lbs. If the other kids on the team are his size they'll send me back to grammar school." "Like I said we need to put some muscle on you. What do you think? Wanna be like the kid who slew Goliath. What was his name?" "Pops you having a senior moment, David of course." "Right David. Do you feel like you have some David in you." "You know David practiced a lot with that sling shot. I haven't touched a ball in 2 years." "Maybe just for the experience, so you'll know what it's like next year" "I'll think about it. That's another thing I don't know if I'll have time for it with all the book leaning." Latter that night Josh and Pops were hard at Josh's studies when Jesse called." "Hey what's up" "Home work ..the remedial was silly easy but the college stuff keeps making references to stuff I don't know." " Yeah I can see that would be a problem." " I driving Pops crazy looking up this and that but he's doing it really good. He sure does know his way around search engines." "So how come you called." " I was just thinking about the basketball tryout and I kind of pressured you into doing it. You sure it's something you want to do." "What's the matter Mr. Inside, think I'll show you up." "I would love to have you do that. You were always the better shooter." "Well BS aside I was having second thoughts. I got all this school work and if all the kids are kinda like your size ... they'll want to send me back to grammar school. " "I don't know how big they are but probably smaller than me. When my dad talked to the coach before we decided to more here he said they were looking for a good strong forward or maybe even center. If I make it I want to be a forward. Anyway that's gotta be the biggest positions on the team." "Do you think I could think about it until tomorrow. Pops said I might to go for it just to find out what the tryout is all about. Even if I don't make it, I can be there to root for you. Jesse, I haven't shot a basket ball in two years." "Ok sure my dad said he was going to call the coach tomorrow night." "Hey Jesse thanks for the call. You're a good friend. I'm so glad you are new kid one. " "OK new kid 2, I'll see you tomorrow at home room. I think we have gym together, too." Josh went back to his studies. Pops had him quit at 10:00 and watch a little TV. "Thanks for your help tonight Pops. I don't think I'll be able to do this without your help." "Hey kid that's what I'm here for, it was fun but I don't have to worry about getting a grade you do." Josh was pleased though he got one assignment done for math and started a paper on climate change for science. He made a note to tell his remedial teachers to move him up a notch. Come 11:00 it was a weary Josh and Pops who climbed the stairs to sleep. Josh missed Pops taking his meds. Maybe I pushed both of us too hard he thought. "Hey Pops did you take your meds." "Jeez no Josh thanks so much." Pops turned to go down stairs but before he could get to them, Josh was already half way down. "Which ones Pops." "The ones marked PM my fair haired genius." " Ok, ok... I didn't get a chance to read them I was just thinking ahead." "I know but I am so pleased that you scored so high on the IQ test I just had to tease you." "I was kind of shocked when she told me too." "Thanks son. I know you are going to try sleep in your bed but I'll check on you when I take my middle of the night pee." Josh hugged Pops and Pops kissed him on the forehead. First day of school was done. Pops did check on Josh during the night. He was tossing and turning and screaming in his sleep. Pops gently woke him and half carried him to his bed. There he held him until the shaking stopped and the breathing was regular and restful sleep had returned to Josh. For sure he knew he loved this boy and said a prayer that all would be good for him at school. Pops woke early but instead of taking his shower he went down stair to make a good breakfast for Josh. He could shower latter after he dropped Him off. Josh awoke a few minutes latter. He was surprised that Pops was out of the shower so he went ahead and had his. When he came down Pops had breakfast all ready, pancakes and sausages. . " Juice or coffee or both my fair haired genius" "Aw come on Pops cut it out. What if there was mistake on the test and I'm really not so smart." "By what I saw last night, that's impossible. I know it's gonna be hard keeping up with your two course schedule so I figured the more I help you remember that you are a genius the harder you'll try. What if we put a limit on me calling you my fair haired genius? Say 3 times a day." "OK Pops if it makes you happy. I'll believe it when I'm out of remedial and in college prep." "Only 29 more days .. here's your coffee and juice." "Thanks" "Did you decide what to do about basketball?" "I think I'm gonna try. I probably won't make it. But being there will probably make it easier for Jesse andI he's the only friend I have." "what about me" "You're my grandpa of course we are best friends." Josh finished the his food, Pops went to warm up the van. Josh went to get his books and jacket. Sure enough Jesse was waiting there at home room. "Hey buddy" "Hey" "What time did you finish last night." "Pops made me stop at 10:00... 8:00 to 2:30 here and then 4:00 to 10:00 with an hour supper break. " "Wow that's like a workaholic. What about basketball?" "Well I know I won't make it but it will be a good experience for next year and I'll be there for you like I promised." "You don't have to worry about me. Jeez you have enough on your plate." " I said I would and you don't renege on a promise. Hey us new kids gotta stick together. You are a friend and friends take care of each other." Jesse was learning a whole lot about character and especially Josh's. "OK I'll tell my dad, thanks buddy." "But next year when I stuff on you. You gotta bow down and kiss my feet" "When you stuff on me wow big talk from a little guy." "OK next year we'll be on." The bell rang home room attendance and announcements. Then Josh off to remedial and Jesse off to college prep. Josh tried to tell the remedial teachers he had to go faster more work. They said he needed time to absorb it. Gym wasn't bad, dodge ball, he went out next to last and was first picked by Jesse who was captain. Lunch with Jesse was good. "hey you were pretty good at dodge ball, today." "Yeah escaping and getting to a bunk first were valuable skills in the shelter." "What was it like." "Well it was just surviving till the next day. There was a song some people sang I guess more of a hymn. ' One day at a time dear Jesus one day at a time'. Showers were kind of creepy. There were these weirdoes that hung out in the showers, like wanting to do things to guys. Me and my best friend Billy had a pack. We always showered together so if one of us got grabbed the other would run for help. Knowing speed would be vital we promised to each other we run for help naked if we had to. It was kind of funny practicing running covering your privates as you did. He's still there and he doesn't have any back up now. Pops had him come out over New Years. It was great to see him. I hope he's alright. The bitch about the shelter is you have to be gone by 9:00 in the morning and can't come back till 6:00 at night. Once you get permanent status you always have a bed. You had to fight for it but you had one. After a while the folks who had permanent status protected every bodies spot. When my grand ma got sick the folks got together and helped us move close to the heat. You know for my grandma's funeral about 200 of them came half of them walking about 10 miles in the snow in 10 degree weather with shitty or no coats and no boots. It's a shame there are so many good people there. Many though no fault of their own lost their homes to the banks and all the rich bankers got bonuses for stealing people houses. Bet you're sorry you asked . I didn't mean to go on." Jesse was stunned. He didn't think it was a fun place but he didn't think it was like that. He was getting an education. "That was your grandma. It was the day we were moving. I was asked to serve the funeral mass. Oh shit I am so sorry I didn't. I didn't know, Josh." "Hey no worry she had a great send off. I mean as far as those kind of things go. I think is was done nice. What did you do in Agebra this morning." They discussed the lesson which was on the assignment Josh did. Josh was smiling ear to ear. Math came so easy to him. "Hey what's up.. why the big smiles. " "I did it last night and from what you say I got it all right I'm gonna hand it in after final bell to Mrs. Martin." The bell rang, lunch was over Josh went to the rest of his remedial classes. "I'll call you if I find out about the tryout." Josh got all the same answers about moving up the pace and more work from his afternoon teachers. He decided to talk with Mrs. Martin about it The final bell sounded and Josh was off to Mrs. Martin. He handed in the Algebra assignment. "Well, Josh so quick well done." "Yeah I talked to my friend, Jesse, who has that class. He explained what the lesson was in class and I did everything the way he said it was supposed to be done. I think I did pretty good." " Great Josh." "I started the term paper for science. It's supposed to be on the effects of climate change. I am kind of interested in it and did a lot of studying on it in the library. So I'll just review the chapters in the text book and then use my own references." "Wow Josh you are committed to moving up fast" "Mrs. Martin you said if I had any problems I should tell you." "Yes I did . Problems already." "Yeah the remedial teachers all of them are not giving me enough work. I know they typically deal with kids that have learning difficulties. I tried to make them understand my situation but they said I have to understand the concept fully. Mrs. Martin I don't what to sound like a know it all. My grandma always said not to be like a big shot. But I read something once, or do something once I got it Really!! She said I was blessed and I agree it is a blessing. Can you talk to them for me?" "To be honest Josh I was afraid that might happen. You are right those teachers are all used to kids that have learning disabilities. I will send them all another note and speak to as many as I can in person. I really didn't want to show them your IQ score but this time I will and demand that they keep it strictly confidential. I'll again explain that you are taking their classes to only catch up on work your other school didn't cover and as soon as you are caught up you'll move to regular college prep courses. Give it to the beginning of next week and let me know if it improves or not. I want to know. I won't have a boy of your ability stifled by lazy teachers!! OK" "Wow Mrs. Martin I like your style. I'll not say a word and get back to you on it next week. Thanks Mrs. Martin." "Glad to help Josh. From what you've told me you have had more than enough crap thrown at you in your young life and as far as Hopewell High School goes I want it to stop here." She put a hand on Josh's shoulder and gave a little squeeze. Josh went to hug her stopped look around and did it anyway. "Thanks Mrs. Martin I counting you as a friend." It was the same routine after school Pops got Josh went home got a snack told Pops about his day. Pops brought out an old leather basketball. "Hey the sun is out take a break and lets go shoot hoops. As far as winter goes you are not going to get a better day. I checked the courts at Copeland school and they are cleared of snow." "Really Pops you think we can." "Yes Josh, I'm sorry we can't have and indoor gym but you can get in an hour of shooting." Josh ran up and got his sneakers. Switched to his hoodie and was ready to go. Unfortunately, shooting a basketball was not as easy as riding a bike. Certainly, Josh made a few but it wasn't anything like he was able to do in grammar school. Pops told him it was his first day and we'll do some more each day. Pops made diner, Josh said" I want to call Father Rick at St. Francis do you think now is a good time." "Well you never know unless you try." Josh found the number and dialed up the church . Father Rick answered; "Hello St. Francis" "Hello Father this is Josh Fitzgerald, I wanted to thank you for all you did for my grandma's funeral." "Well, Josh you grandmother was a fine woman. All of the people of St Francis thought very highly of her it was our pleasure to be able to help out." "I haven't been to many funerals but I think my grandma's was one of the nicest....Say Father I have been thinking of all the homeless folks who came to the funeral and have an idea that you might be able to help me with." "What is it Josh." "Well you saw those folks, most of them are good people and life has not been very fair to them. Most came that cold wet snowy day without a warm coat or boots. You know they have to be out of the shelter by 9:00 in the morning and not allowed back in till 6:00 at night. That's a long time to be out on the street trying to find a way to get food or work in the freezing cold. My Pops said a lot of people sometimes have 2 coats or even 3 coats. One stuck in the back of a closet not their favorite anymore. So I was hoping you would let me ask the people of St. Francis to donate one of those coats to my friends at the shelter. Pops and I would take them to the shelter. We would ask St Francis to collect them. What do ya, think Father." "Well, I think you are just like your grandmother, always trying to help people. You can ask on Sunday at the 9:00, 10:30 and 12:00 masses. We'll be glad to collect the coats for you. Just before the end of mass we have announcements and I'll give you a little sign to go up to the podium and say what you have to say. I'll give you a little introduction as well." "Oh wow thanks so much Father Rick, you're the best. I'll get Pops to be there early this Sunday. You made my day. Thanks again." Father Rick said, "Thank you Josh , you are a very special young man to get involved like this. The world needs more Fitzgeralds. Good night now.? "Good night Father. Thank you again." Josh yelled "Pops!! Pops!! I did it. Father Rick is going to let me ask for the coats at the Sunday masses. Can you take me there? Please, Pops. " It was all Josh talked about at dinner. Pops said his talk had to be professional no stammering or a bunch of uh's. It should be factual but not so many facts that they'll get bored ; also keep it short about 2 to 4 minutes would be right but get your point across. The most important thing is to talk from your heart so you enlist an emotional response from the congregation and a little humor always helps to get & keep their attention. Last thing always say thank you ...to Father Rick for giving you this opportunity and the congregation for listening. "Wow, Pops maybe you should do this? You know so more about giving a speech." "No sir, this is all you I'm just the chauffer... Really it was your idea and I think it's a great thing for you to do. I'll help you to do it but I won't do it for you. Is that clear?" "You're right as always Pops, I think I can do this. I'll make notes during the week and pull it together on Saturday, maybe Billy can help. He's coming this weekend too." With dinner done Josh hit the books, doing the easy remedial stuff first. He figured he would work on the science term paper after supper. Jesse called the tryout was gonna be Friday after school. Josh took the news with resignation. He promised his friend and he would keep his promise. He knew if he shot like he did today he had no chance and would be laughed out of the building. But a promise is a promise. Again Pops helped Josh looking up stuff for the term paper. About 10:00 they finished. Josh texted Billy to find out how he was. Billy said he talked to the coach at school explained about the weirdoes at the shelter and the coach said he could use the showers any time. Josh thought that was a great idea and congratulated Billy on it. Josh told Billy about his call to Father Rick and asked Billy if he could help him with his talk. Billy said yeah sure. So plans were set in motion. They both were tired so the texting didn't go on very long. Pops remembered his meds. Got his hug from Josh and kissed his forehead. During his midnight pee Pops checked on Josh. Again he was having the bad dream. Again he brought him into his bed. Again he calmed him and waited for him to return to restful sleep. The same morning routine was followed. Josh said. "Pops thanks for getting me again last night. Jeez I feel like a little kid having monster dreams." "Well maybe the problem is you haven't had a lot of time to be a little kid. And you are making progress." "How so?" "Well you used to wake up crying and shaking uncontrollable. It would take an hour to calm you down. Now I have to get you out of bed; you aren't waking up. Although you are shaking it is more controlled and it only takes about 20 minutes to calm you down. The day will come when the dream will be gone." "Think so Pops" "Know so son" Josh met Jesse at homeroom told him about his shooting practice. He was sure he wouldn't make the team. "Don't be so sure you were always at your best when the game was on the line." "Yeah that was then now is now." " I have faith in you and no matter what I am your friend" One more day of practice with Pops got the same result. Maybe Josh made a couple more baskets but nothing significant. Friday the day of the tryout came. Josh tried warming up as best as he could Jesse helped as much as he could ; then onto the real thing. Jesse went first, lay ups, foul shots, corner jumpers , then one on one against a kid his size. Jesse ate him up and Josh cheered his every move. Then it was Josh's turn. He missed 3 of 10 lay ups, 5 of 10 foul shots , 7 of 10 corner jumpers. The kid, he drew in the one of one out weighted him by 25 lbs and had 3 inches on him. Josh made a several baskets but lost badly. The boy, Jesse beat in one on one started saying something like grammar school is 2 blocks over. Jesse went over to him. "Hey buddy that's my good friend and you don't know shit about him. You keep messing with him and I'll mess with you." Then Jesse shouted, " play ball Josh!!!" Josh canned the next two shots but it was too little too late. The coach came up to Jesse "glad to have you on the team." Then he looked at Josh like what are you doing here. But he was nice. "Try to put some weight on. Your form on your shot was excellent have you been playing ball." "Not really coach, Jesse and I played on a championship CYO 5th & 6th grade team. I haven't touched a basketball in 2 years except for the day before yesterday. I knew I wouldn't make the team but I wanted to be here for Jesse." Josh picked up his stuff and went over to congratulate Jesse. " Hey congratulations, you made it; I'm proud of you. I'll practice over the summer and see you next year." "Thanks for coming out; I heard you cheering it made a big difference." Jesse didn`t know what else to say or do. So he gave Josh a big hug. "Go get em new kid 1" Pops was there to pick up the pieces as well. He only tried out for his friend Jesse. He knew he wasn't ready to play. Besides he had the coat drive to think about. They were late picking up Billy at the mall. Josh warned him it might happen. Billy was in excellent spirits. He positively loved visiting Josh and Pops. It was a whole bunch of things. Of course there was the sex games between him and Josh and getting out of the shelter was just the best medicine after a week of school. But it really was the chance to be a regular kid in a real house with people who loved him and he loved back. That was what he loved about the visits. Josh was excited about the coat drive and he told Billy all the things Pops said to include in the speech. Together they worked on the talk. Sunday morning rolled around. Everyone had to be up early to be in the city at St Francis for the 9:00 mass. Just like Josh had promised they were 15 minutes early. Father Rick greeted them. "Hi Josh you are looking good in you tie and sweater. Are you all ready? " I hope so Father. Pops said confidence counts and looking good makes you feel good so maybe I am." "I expect a bright young man like yourself will do fine." They went inside . Father Rick said "right after announcements I'll introduce you. So as they start to read them you get up and start edging your way to the podium. Take your time before you start your talk, make sure the mic is about even with your mouth. Don't rush your talk... like you just want it to end. People won't be able to understand what you are saying. Find a friendly face and keep going back to that person as if it is just you and him having a talk. Relax try to get comfortable with the people." "I'll try my best Father" "That's all any of us can do." "Thanks Father Mass went on as scheduled and announcements were being made. Josh got up and was standing only a couple feet from the podium. Father Rick introduced Josh. "Folks we have a young man here, Josh Fitzgerald, who spent quite a bit of time in the homeless shelter I think he has a real good idea but I'll let him tell you about." Josh began. Inside his stomach was doing flip flops; out side he was a cool confident teenage boy. "Hi, darn, the paper says I'm supposed to say I'm Josh Fitzgerald. But Father already told you that . I'll say it anyway. (Light chuckles from the congregation) I'm Josh Fitzgerald my grandma used to live over an 18 av. We always came to this church. Some of you may know her, Maggie Fitzgerald, she did a lot of volunteer work. Well she made a bad loan and lost her house . So she and I had been homeless for the past 2 years. Grandma died just before Christmas and I'm sure some of you came to her funeral mass. Another bunch of people came to her funeral; people from the homeless shelter; good people who because of one thing or another were going through hard times just like me and grandma. If you remember the day it was very cold, 10 degrees and snowy . There was about 200 hundred of them came to say good bye to grandma. They all couldn't fit on the bus so many of them walked . They walked in flimsy coats and sneakers instead of boots. These good people came in spite of the weather risking frost bite and sickness to say goodbye to one of their own. They told me it was the least they could do. Now, a lot of folks say bad things about the homeless folks. They are lazy; they are thieves ; they are no good because they have no homes, no jobs . I guess that's true for a few but most are like my grandma who got a bad loan or lost their job. I have a friend from the shelter; his name is Billy and he is 15 years old and he is homeless. His dad was a marine and died over in Iraq. His mom went through some hard times too. But now she is taking a computer course so she can get a job that will pay enough for her to get a place for her and Billy. She also works at McDonalds so she has money to get food for herself and Billy. New Years eve she had a chance to work and get paid double time. It was a choice if either getting extra money or not sleeping in the shelter. Needing the money; she choose work. So when the snow hit and pretty much canceled New Year's . She had no place to go and to make it worse, someone stole the lite spring coat she had. Billy was staying with me and Pops so, we went out to get her. She was near froze when we got her. Another few minutes she would have fallen and froze to death. I am telling you all this because I have an idea that can help. It's not earth shattering but it would be very useful. I want to make sure that at the very least all these people can have a warm winter coat. You probably didn't know they have to be out of the shelter by 9:00 in the morning and not allowed back until 6:00 at night. That's a long time to be on the street in a flimsy spring coat if they even have that. Being a shelter kid I was surprised to find out that there are a lot of people that have more than one winter coat. Pops told me that. He said they get a new coat and the old one often gets left in the closet. So I'm asking you to find that old coat in your closet and bring it to the church and we'll bring them down to the shelter. Style doesn't matter, neither does missing a button or something like that. The important thing is that it is warm. I'm only 14 years old so I don't know a whole lot about religion or the bible. But I learner a tiny bit from a sign that Luke, he's the shelter director, has hanging his office. It reads "THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO I" Another thing I learned was at Christmas . I was so lucky to be with Pops family, Pops is Luke's father and the best foster grandpa ever, any way they gave me a bunch of neat stuff and I felt bad that I had nothing to give them back. Grandma said you are always supposed to repay a kindness in kind. Liz, Pops daughter whispered to me that it is better to give than receive so I was really doing them a favor. So that's about all I got to say. Except if that if by the grace of God you are lucky enough to have that old coat in your closet and you think it's better to give than keep it. Thank you so much for listening to me and thank you Father Rick for giving me the opportunity ." Josh had given his talk. He showed confidence; for sure he didn't rush it. He had looked around the congregation person by person ; looking directly into their eyes trying to find that one friendly face but they all looked friendly to him. Father Rick stood up and clapped the entire congregation joined him. Josh's little talk got a standing ovation. He just kind of hung his head a little. It was the same way he hung his head when he made the winning basket years ago. Father Rick called Pops during the week. Coats were coming into the church like it was summer and no one ever needed one again. Father Rick was amazed and jokingly asked if Josh could give a talk when the arch bishop's annual appeal came around. Pops said he would talk to Josh about the arch bishop and that they would get the coats on Saturday . He would have Billy to help him and Josh. Josh and Pops picked up Billy at the bus station on Friday. They were most happy to see each other and caught up on the events of the week. Josh getting out of remedial classes was the big item. Billy being able to shower without the weirdoes was another. After a good breakfast on Saturday morning they headed into the city and to St. Francis. Upon arriving they caught up with Father Rick and he said the coats were in the church's basement and gym. He gave them the key to load up. They went down to take a look. "Wow" Billy said as he surveyed the amount of coats." There must be 3 4 hundred coats here. You did some good talk, Josh" "You helped with it too, Billy. Don't blame me that we have all these to cart to the shelter." "Look you both did good. This will take a couple loads so save your energy for the carting" Pops said. They brought the first load up from the basement Pops opened the van. Some boys were playing basketball on the outdoor courts. " Hey you're him aren't you?" one kid asked. Josh looked around to be sure he was talking to him. "Yeah you are ." Josh wasn't sure if was going to have to run or fight. The boy questioning was a tall lanky black fellow. "Boy my momma gave to me about being more like you. ... Get out there and help people like that white boy does. She said to me." "Uh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to cause anyone any trouble." "Oh it's no trouble but I feel like I gotta help you with all the coats. And my bro's will help too if you want." "Wow would you," Billy said. "Have you seen how many are down there" "Yup how do you think they got, there. Father Rick lets us use the gym if we help out around the church." Josh said "Does your momma know." "Well I like to keep it a secrete; then when Father Rick says thanks. My momma just smiles and smiles and makes me the best chicken al la king going. So it works out pretty good." They all chuckled at that. "So what do I call you dude?" Josh asked. "I'm Derrick, the goofy looking guy with the glasses is Matt, the tall blond boy is Paul, and the smallish Spanish kid is Shorty." "Well I'm Josh and this is Billy, he's still in the shelter and this is Pops our foster grandpa." "Paul said, "You look familiar....did you play CYO ball?" "Yeah, now I remember you, Paul but you were a lot smaller then. Guess you grew!!" "My `rents said I hit a growth spurt or something." Pops said, "Well thanks for helping boys but we better get to work and the van loaded looks 3 or 4 trips to me." With that the 6 teenagers went to work. They worked in teams one boy would load another till he couldn't carry any more. Then 2 of the loads did the same thing until only one loader was left and he became a carrier for the next round. They had the van loaded for the first trip in 20 minutes. Derrick and Paul asked to go to the shelter. Josh stayed behind with Matt and Shorty. Pops got out an old piece of plastic to put on the ground to protect the coats so they could bring up more while he was delivering what was in the van. Pops called Luke to arrange the delivery and he was so happy to hear about Josh's plan and that it worked to perfection. Luke had arranged , for the shelter the staff and a few homeless volunteers to help off load and sort the coats by size and gender. With such a great team working together the project was delivered in an hour and a half. Matt and Shorty went on the second delivery and they all went on the last one Pops said it was mandatory. After the delivery Pops had spied a Boston Market on the previous trip and pulled in the parking lot. "I want to thank you boys for doing such a good job today. Let me buy you guys lunch. I know you gotta be hungry. Derrick it won't be as good as your momma chick al la king but it will fill your insides." "You sure Mr. Pops it'll be expensive feeding all 6 of us." "Jeeze Josh another guy worrying about my finances..... Yes Derrick believe me I know; it not that much and the food is better than McDonalds. Now out of the van all of you and get anything you want." The boys didn't have to be told twice. They all got decent dinners and Pops made sure they got desert. Josh caught up with Paul about basketball . They talked about the shelter folks who helped one was old Jesse and he did his farting joke. They laughed and carried on like teenagers do. Billy seemed to be having the most fun. Pops sat back and smiled joined when needed but the boys controlled the conversation. Pops drove them back to St. Francis. The boys thanks Pops for lunch ; Pops and Josh thanked them all for helping. Pops thought a better afternoon they could not have had. Pops called Luke and asked him to make a short 2 or 3 minute video of the homeless folks getting the coats with a few giving remarks. Luke said of course he would. Pops told Josh he should call Father Rick and ask to show the video. Of course Josh did. He had his time after announcements. His talk was short. "Hi I'm not here asking for your help again. I just want to say thank you for your extreme gererosity and share a short video with you. The video showed the homeless folks -- One was jumping around and singing "I ain't gonna be cold no more no more" -- another said " I used to go to the subway station to get warm. The police would always kick me out they could tell I was homeless. Now with my new coat I look like I belong. One woman said she applied for work and got the job because she looked more respectable. The final scene showed all the folks (over a hundred) on the steps on the shelter, all smiling and shouting THANK YOU ST FRANCIS!! Josh said "My Pops said I should show you the video because too often people contribute to a good cause but never see how their contribution has helped others. The shelter folks thank you and I thank you and I especially want to thank Derrick and Matt and Paul and Shorty for helping so much with the coats. You all are good caring people and I hope you all feel the love you deserve." Josh turned to exit the podium. Again the congregation gave him a standing ovation. He turned to Pops. Pops smiled and said "you did good son we are all proud of you; especially your Mom and Dad and Grandma looking down. Don't forget this, build on it." Time went on Josh was out of remedial math after he got 100% on the assignment. The only kid to do so. After he handed in the Climate control term paper remedial science was history. The paper got an A+ + mark. The teacher asked if he could submit it to an online Young Scientists blog . Josh agreed. English and History was namely catching up on reading assignments. Spanish was memorizing words and vocabulary easy as pie for Josh. True to his word Josh did it. In one month he got caught up Mrs. Martin was beaming when she was able to tell him he was done with remedial classes. He asked if they ever allowed student teacher aids to help with the remedial classes. If they did he would like to volunteer. He had helped quite a few kids while he was there and many were sad to see him go. In Gym class Jesse was often a captain and he always picked Josh first. One day they were playing basket ball and losing by quite a lot. Most of the team kids were against Jesse Josh and non team kids. There was about 10 minutes left. Jesse on running up the court said "lets go Mr. Outside aren't you tried of losing yet." Something snapped if Josh. He was back at St Francis. Jesse was saying they had to go. Down the court into Jesse back to Josh BANG 3 pointer; Next possession the same thing and again and again. The team guys started running people at Josh. A dribble a side step and bang. The 15 point lead was gone. They stayed home on Josh. Jesse had an easy layup. The coach also the gym teacher was watching. Jesse and Josh were is perfect sync. They knew each others moves so perfectly; five team players against Jesse and Josh and some non team kids. After class and showers coach went over to Jesse. " "Wow now I know why you wanted him to try out." "Coach when we were in CYO at the end of the game he never and I mean never missed. And he is so smart sometimes I swear he knew where I was going before I did. He would deliver the ball so perfectly, I just couldn't miss. He is special coach." "He said, he didn't play ball for two years. How come." "He's had a hard time coach. His parents died when he was 8. He lived with his grand mother . She lost her house. They were homeless living out of a shelter in the city for 2 years. Then she died and now he is living with someone; he calls Pops. The school he went to while in the shelter was shit. It didn't teach to the grade level here. He took remedial and college prep courses at the same time got straight A's and caught up in a month's time. He wants to start a student teacher's aid program to help the remedial kids." "Wow really." "Yeah really. You know every time I think of all the shit he has gone though and I see a punk like Mutt telling him to go back to grammar school. I get upset and if I hear he does it one more time I'm gonna pound him." "I can respect that.... Never missed when the game was on the line. " "Never" "I hope he has the time for some basketball and make sure he eats enough. Ask him to come see me." Jesse was elated that Josh was in his classes now. Instead of him helping Josh; Josh was helping him. He had his own private tutor so to speak. Pops was feeding Josh as if they had to use up all the food before it went bad. Plus he went to the health food store and got a weight gaining supplement. To turn all that food into muscle; he got Josh a few weights and helped him do exercises. Josh looking at Pops' spare tire said he would do the exercises only if Pops did some too. So the old man and the young boy were on a health kick. Pops laughed and said Josh could have every pound he lost. Josh did a quick check and figured Pops had a good 30 to 40 pounds to lose. With each egging the other on by the week's end another barrier was passed. Pops lost 5 pounds Josh gained 5 pounds. They both were looking better and feeling better. Pops said it wasn't fair Josh could eat his way to health he had to not eat. Josh pushed Pops "Come on old man give me another pound." Pops pushed Josh "Come on kid you got to eat everything so I don't." During the month since the start of school Josh gained 20 pound and Pops lost 15. It was a much healthier & energized Josh who had the break out game during gym. Jesse caught up to Josh in the hall. "Hey, Mr. Outside, Wow you had some game during gym" "Yeah, I got the feeling back like when we played CYO. I don't know what happen; I just imagined I was back at ST. Francis. Like when you said we had to go, not much time and I was there and we were doing it again" "Hey it was fantastic and coach asked me about you. He wants you to see him." "What did you say." "Only the truth; that you never, never missed in the 4th quarter when we played CYO." "Well he probably wants a new manager?" "I don't think so Josh he was very impressed and look you've gained weight. You are looking great just like when we played CYO. Come on go see him, for me." "Jesse it was one little gym time scrimmage." "Against the freshmen starting five less one." "Last time I went to see him for you; they laughed me off the court." "You're better now; you're the old Josh. I know you've never been a quitter. One more time , please Josh." "Josh never heard Jesse like this, he was almost begging him." "I'll talk to Pops and let you know. I don't know if I am ready. I don't like being laughed at." "You play like you did today and no one will be laughing; they'll be cheering." That night Josh talked to Pops. "Jesse said the basketball coach wants to see me" "Really how do you feel about that" "I had a good game in gym against the team's, starting five. It was almost like I played for St Francis in the CYO. I did make 5 three pointers and feed Jesse for another couple layups." "How did that happen." "I was running up court and Jesse was beside me and he said `come on Mr. Outside aren't you tried of losing'. Then, it was like I was playing CYO ball.... I don't know if I want to do another try out and have the kids laugh at me." "So why do you think it happened." "That's it... I don't know, Pops." "Wanna know what I think." "Please Pops please." "I think when you tried out before you were run down not 100% healthy and you didn't have your confidence. It had been 2 years since you touched a ball. You only did it for Jesse. You are healthier now. Jesse made you compete harder like you did in grammar school. Because you're healthier, because you competed harder Jesse gave you the confidence to play like the old Josh. Not like Homeless Josh. You know being homeless effects your psyche, your feeling of self worth; it's like you're not good enough to have a home. You don't deserve it. Healing is not just about getting out of the shelter. Healing is about knowing that you are worthwhile and you belong. Healing is about having confidence to say I'm Josh Fitzgerald I am a genius, a great student, a caring person, and a great basketball player." "Pops you are amazing and I am a great basketball player...I'll see coach tomorrow ... Thanks again Pops." "What did I do? did I make a basket?" "Aw Pops you made me realize what's been wrong. I just needed my confidence, Jesse made me get it and up my game. I can do this." "Good let's eat." "No I'll eat and you watch. I'll take every pound you can give me." After Supper Josh called Jesse. "Hey I just wanted you to know, I decided to go see the coach tomorrow and if he wants me on the team or a try out I'll do it." "Wow that is great." Pops told me good stuff about being homeless and what it can do to your psyche. Remember coach back in CYO and how he talked about confidence. Well besides being skinny and run down I lost my confidence. Pops has been feeding me like food is going out of style I got healthy and today you pushed me over the edge. I got it back. I am Josh Fitzgerald, I have a near genius IQ, I am a great student , I care a lot about people and I am a great basketball player." "Oh man that is so good to hear." "Well you did it. The crack about getting tired of losing. You know how I hate losing. You just made me compete harder and it was like I was back at St. Francis." "Well you sure did put on a show. I was loving it. I talked to my dad, he said to just give you time and keep being supportative. He remembered how you played and how sweet your stroke was. He said you looked malnourished. " "Yeah maybe I was. I wasn't eating to good unit I got to Pops's." "You made my day, hell my year. You know we'll all be rooting for you over here. See you tomorrow then." Josh walked into coach's office. "You wanted to see me, coach Mathews." "Yeah Josh, that was some shooting display you put on in gym, yesterday." "Thanks coach just lucky I guess." "Jesse says you used to do that all the time back in CYO. You never missed in the 4th quarter." "Maybe I missed and he wasn't watching." "Well you were up against some pretty good kids yesterday." "It was just a little scrimmage." "I thought the team guys were trying pretty hard" "Like I said just luck" "I think you are just being modest; What was the difference from the try out to yesterday." "Well I guess before I was a little run down. Pops said I needed healing time for my psyche and he just keeps throwing food at me." "I heard you were in the shelter system in New York." "Yeah" "I heard your Grandmother died there." "Yeah" "That's how you wound up out here with Pops. Who is he?" "He's the best foster grandfather in the world. He wants to adopt me." "What's his name." "Jon Calanhan. What's with the 3rd degree coach." "I just like to know about my players" "Well maybe I'm not a player" "You don't want to play for me?" "Oh I didn't know you wanted me to play for you" "Do you want to play for me?" "Gosh coach this is getting silly." "Yeah it is. So I want you to play. Want to?" "Sure coach, I guess you figured ,`'I'm not gonna beg you. I think I can help and I love to play. I don't wanna get off to bad start with you. It's Just that Pops has been the best think that happened to me in the last 2 years and I guess I'm a little protective of him." "Nice to hear you talk about him like that." "Anything else make a difference " "Well like I said I'm healthier plus Jesse turned on my competitive switch and then I forgot being a homeless kid and just played. I got my confidence back. You know being homeless messes with your head. You start to think you deserve to be homeless; you don't deserve any better. Guess that had got in my head. Pops just knocked it out. I am Josh Fitzgerald, I have a near genius IQ, I am a great student, I care deeply about people and I am a great basketball player." "So the key is confidence" "My old coach taught when you shoot the ball know that it is going in; don't think it will go; for gosh sakes don't hope that it will go in; know it or don't shoot it. What happened when I shot the ball, as soon as it was out of my hand, what did I do? " "I don't quite recall." "I guess you watched the ball. I didn't I was going back on defense. What did Jesse do? He was going back on defense too. When Jesse and I are on we don't watch the ball go in; we use that fraction of a second to get back. The name of the game isn't scoring but scoring differential. After you score you have to stop the other team. That's the way I was taught; that's real confidence. My old coach said very few guys can achieve it, but Jesse and I got it." "Hey you after my job" "Gosh no coach, I mean you have a good job in a nice safe town coaching good kids for the most part. A lot of guys would jump at it. I want to go into social work and see how many people I can help get out of those damn shelters. If I am able to coach basketball, I'd like to do the Bobby Hurley thing; getting kids from the slums into ball and a good education and off to college. Don't get me wrong you are needed here but there is more of a need elsewhere." " You are quite a kid Josh. I'm sorry I came on a little strong. I'm hoping you and Jesse can turn our season around. You got a special number I'll see if I have it." " Not really coach, oh hey maybe 2. When Jesse & I were in testing we were goofing a little and I called him New Kid 1 and I was New Kid 2." " You`re in luck New Kid 2. Practice is at 3:30 today." "Can I come in early after final bell" "Why did I know you would ask that. Yeah sure I think Jesse comes in early too." Jesse was so excited that Josh was on the team. He had been shouldering a big load in their half court offense and kept getting double and tripled teamed. The team had started the season well with 6 wins using a fast break offense and trapping defense. The other teams in the league caught on and forced them into a half court game and they lost 4 games. When Jesse came the half court game was better with him in the low post. They won 3 games. So the league stated to double and triple team him. And they lost their last two games. So their record was 9 and 6 and Jesse was getting beat up in the last two games trying to score against double and triple teams. Josh and Jesse were in the same last class. Jesse said, "I'm going to go right over to the gym and get in some time on the weights before practice. Want to come." "I was planning on it. I'm not really in game shape. Maybe I could go hard for a quarter but not much more than that." They quickly got changed and headed for the weight room. Jesse worked on his arms and shoulder and back. Josh worked on his legs. He knew they needed strengthening. Coach came in and said well if it's not new kid one and new kid two. "Say did you guys win a champion ship in CYO." Jesse answered "Yeah coach, actually we went undefeated . Mr. Outside here was the MVP of the league." "That so... So Josh you think you can do that here." "I'm not sure coach. I'm not really in game shape. I don't think I could go hard for much more than a quarter. I would try but there is only so much your mind can will your body to do. I think my stamina and legs need to be built up. Do you want to know how I would use me?" "Well you do have a genius IQ so it would be wise for me to listen." "I would wait till the end of the 3rd quarter or beginning of the 4th quarter to put me in. If you are up let me sit the guys don't like a new kid taking their spot. If you are losing I might be able to help bring you back. You only have 5 games left and the guys you have , have earned their spots. But if they are losing and I help they'll accept me more." "Well Coach new kid two, I think you have a good plan. I'll consider it. It won't hurt your confidence sitting." "No way coach, I know what I can do and if I need any help in that department I have Jesse. But I'm really not in game shape. If you started me as a confidence boost, I wouldn't be there at the end when you really need me." "OK Josh we'll try it your way." The practice consisted of a lot of fast break drills and trapping defense. For the scrimmage Josh was on the bench. Coach set up the scrimmage with Jesse and the 2nd stringers against the rest of his starters and 1 second stringer in place of Jesse. It was 2 - 20 minute halfs. Jesse kept his team close but the starters were wearing him down and up by 9. At the 10 minute mark coach put Josh in. Jesse had a big smile on his face. He knew it was all over for the other team. Josh ran the point. He came up the floor and faked a pass to Jesse his man fell off him and drained a 3. He was back on defense with Jesse along side of him before the ball was through the basket. With no fast break and no half court game the starters didn't score. This time up he passed into Jesse when Josh's man fell off to cover Jesse, Jesse passed the ball back to Josh in the corner; another 3. Again as soon as the ball left his hand both Josh and Jesse back on defense . No fast break for the starters another miss and another rebound by Jesse to Josh. This time Josh took off racing up court Jesse trailing behind him. The starters were back. Three guys in the lane. Josh dribble to the left side of the key. When the three converged on him he passed back to Jesse who slipped past them on the right for an easy lay up. Both of them raced back. Again the fast break was stopped and Josh had the ball again. Now the starters were determined not to let Josh or Jesse score. Josh said weak side pass to Jesse. Jesse knew exactly what to do. He set up a little farther out on the left side of the key leaving space for a lay up on the right. Josh went to the foul line 2 starters came to get him with two more defenders on Jesse. A smart hustling blond kid cut to the basket. Josh lead him perfectly for an easy layup. The starters were yelling at each other. They unraveled in 5 minutes with Jesse at the point. The rest of the scrimmage had Josh and Jesse passing to the other guys on their team for easy baskets. Both Josh and Jesse were yelling everybody scores look for the ball. The starters were beaten and lost by 6, a 15 point turn around in 10 minutes. Coach was smiling Josh had taken over the game just as he said he could. But he really liked the way, after he had the other team back on their heals, that he shared the ball and started the everybody scores thing. He knew he had a winning formula with Josh at point. He had the boys gather round. "Good scrimmage boys, hard played. I liked that. You know, I stacked the deck as much as I could against Josh and Jesse. We are a good team when we have our fast break going with our trapping defense. But if teams play us smart and get back on defense; we can be beat. We just don't have had an outside threat to make our half court offense work. Jesse has helped a lot in the low post but he is getting double and tripled teamed. I know you starters are mad about losing to a couple of new kids. But if new kids can help us win you'd be real dumb to not welcome and appreciate what they can bring to the team. Josh played ball in grammar school with Jesse and went undefeated, he wouldn't say it but Jesse did. He was MVP of his league. He told me he didn't want to take any of the starter s jobs; that you had earned them and played and worked hard all year. It wouldn't be a fair thing. But if we are losing come the 4th quarter he can be a real weapon coming off the bench. What do you say boys are you going to welcome him to the team." The team all gathered around Josh and shook his hand and thumped him on his back. Bobby Edwards the starting point guard said, " we're still gonna call you grammar school but when we do, it'll mean MVP, right guys!! Hey, can you give me lessons so I can run the point like you and you stay on the bench." It was meant as a compliment and Josh took it that way. Josh said, "Only if you show me how to run the break." Josh was quickly accepted by his teammates. His natural humility in shedding attention from himself and complimenting another player endeared him to all. His quite confidence was something they all wanted to emulate. Coach was happy Josh's presence just seemed to bring his team together like they had never been before. Of course, Jesse whispering that he had never lost a game when he played with Josh helped make it happen. It gave them all the feeling that they couldn't lose. They were playing with renewed energy. Their defense was amazing. Their steals and fast break points mounted and they were a feared team as play offs approached. Josh was only needed in three of the final 5 games. He can off the bench losing by 7, 9 and 12 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. Each time he rallied his team and brought them home, going away. Everyone was catching on when he put up a shot to get back on defense and he rarely missed. Coached loved having a secret weapon. When he went into the game his teammates all said "no not grammar school." Bobby Edwards lead the cheering ...."lucky shot grammar school." The other team relaxed thinking the Hopewell coach had put in a scrub. By the time they figured out Josh was a very dangerous player it was too late. Their lead erased and the score climbing against them. Hopewell roared into the state playoffs; their defense triggering their fast break. Bobby Edwards was playing great, making steal after steal and feeding breakers for lay ups. He knew he had an MVP player playing behind him and he sure didn't want to come out of any game. Coach knew the competition had taken his game to another level. They easily made it to the state championship game. Josh sat wanting to play but knowing if he did his team would be losing. Then the unthinkable happened. Bobby Edwards the leader of the defense and the fast break twisted his ankle two minutes into the first quarter of the championship game. It was a bad sprain and Josh went out to help him off the court. Bobby said "It's your team and your game now Josh bring them home." He didn't say new kid; he didn't say grammar school. In the three weeks Josh had been on the team it was one of the few times he was called by his name. The trapping defense that coach employed was physically demanding. It taxed the stamina of everyone of his players. Coach called time out. "Josh you ready for this." "I guess I gotta be." "Just run the break Josh if we have to go to half court we'll do that next half." Josh did as he was asked. Coach saw him laboring but had no real alternative. At the end of the half Hopewell held a 5 point lead but Josh was tiring fast. The trapping defense was working and not working. It had them ahead but it also was exhausting their point guard who was feeding fast break after fast break. In the locker room everyone was yelling encouragement to each other except Josh. He was conserving his energy, slowly drinking Gatorade wanting so much to re-energize his body. Coach looked at him and he knew he had a problem. Would he last one more half? "Josh good first half. How are you feeling?" "I won't lie to you, kind of tried coach" "Well my genius, point guard what would you suggest?" "Well you could grow Bobby a new ankle coach I don't know where he gets the energy to run the trap play after play." "He said from you. He wanted you to stay on the bench." "I'd love to take that seat back but barring that we could trap and fast break only one in four defenses. Go to half court, I could maybe walk the ball up. Trapping one in four or even 1 in five or 1 in 3 to keep them off balance would help a lot. Maybe take me out the last minute of the 3rd quarter and put me back a couple minutes into the 4th, I'll do my best for you coach. I'll die out there to win it but that's my brain talking not my legs or body." Coach called the team together. We're gonna switch things up a little in the second half we are going to run the trap & break on my signal. I sit down the next defense you run the trap. If I stand up you run man to man half court and half court offense. How come coach "we got them on their heals." "One. because I'm the coach. Two. because they are in their locker room right now figuring out ways to break our trap defense. Three. Because we are asking our back up point guard who hasn't had the training you did; who hasn't played more than a quarter at a time to play the whole game. His heart is willing but his body needs more training to do what we are asking. Now we are a team, we play together, we win together, we lose together and we support each other. Got it. " "Yes sir" came the resounding response. Jesse said he could bring the ball if no one was on him. The team was rallying around the homeless kid who in three short weeks had galvanized the team. The team went out for warm ups. Josh waited till the last second inside. An old gray haired man peaked around the corner. "Pops I don't think you are supposed to be in here." "I know son but I didn't see you come out with the team. A little tired are we." "Yeah." Pops went over and rubbed his shoulders and neck. Josh for a moment wished he was in bed and Pops was holding him like he did when he had those bad dreams. "Josh " "Yes Pops" "You know the course of history is filled with stories of people who did amazing things. Soldiers who ran with a buddy on their back to save a life. People who survived ship wrecks or who crossed mountains or wilderness. One thing they all had was a belief that they could do whatever the impossible task was. You my boy are tried but you only have to play hard for another 30 minutes. Your mind is an amazing thing it can will every last bit of strength out of your body. And you are way stronger than you think you are. Trust me son you can do this. Do it for your team and yourself. Do it Josh. Go out on that court and believe you haven't played a minute and you are fresh and ready to get them. Go on now son. Remember trying is an excuse for not doing. Believing is getting it done." "I will Pops hey 30 minutes ain't nothing". Josh got up and trotted out on the court. Pops little talk as well as the rest allowed him to play with renewed energy. The strategy he and coach dreamed up was working well. Jesse was a demon in the low post; Josh feeding him at exactly the right time, in exactly the right place; hooking left then right using his little fall away jumper. He had the Madville defender completely off balance. Josh hit a couple 3's to keep the defense honest and not double teaming, Jesse. At the end of the quarter the lead was 6. The other team Madville had earned their right to be here. They were dogged in their goal of a championship. Their coach saw Josh tiring, noticed little things like Jesse bringing the ball up. Saw him taken out at a minute before the end of the 3rd quarter. With the quarter break and another 2 minutes of the 4th quarter Josh had gotten a 5 minute break. By then Hopewell was clinging to a 2 point lead. When he went back in Madville called time. He told his team "their point guard is whipped. Drive on him make him work a little shot in the ribs will help to". So they did. They went barreling into Josh at every opportunity. Knocking him down time after time. But he always bounced up. He heard Pops' words. You can do amazing things. Things others thought impossible. He heard Bobby Edwards cheering on the bench "come on grammar school. Way to go Josh" as the game wound down Jesse picked up his 5th foul and was out of the game. The player Jesse fouled hit the 2 foul shots. Hopewell was now down 2 with 15 seconds left. Coach called his final time out. "Who wants to take the last shot." They all looked to Josh. Coach looked too. "If I get open enough to shoot it I know it will go in. I can't fake to Jesse though so I guess we have to use screens." Coach devised a triple screen for Josh. The Madville coach had seen Josh in a his last two regular season games when he brought Hopewell back. Guys the little kid they call grammar school is going to shoot a three. Surround him don't foul him if he is shooting otherwise beat the crap out of him. The whistle blew. Booby said "end this Josh" Ball had to be put in play in 5 seconds. The out of bounds passer slapped the ball Josh ran past the first screen, one Madville guy elbowed him in the head, no whistle, past the second, got Josh a shot in the ribs. Now he was mad he had taken all they had to dish out earlier as part of the game. This wasn't and the refs weren't calling anything. When he went past the 3rd screen a kid tried to put an elbow in his forehead. He saw it, ducked and punched the Madville punk as hard as he could in the stomach. Got the ball turned shot and ran down the court to defend. His team mates watched for a second and then did the same. He heard the crowd on the Hopewell side yell and cheer. Madville also out of timeouts had to inbound the ball and get up court. They tried to get by the trapping defense. Hopewell picked off their pass and the game was over. After the game people came by to congratulate him. Josh in typical style said, "the screeners did it. Those guys took the hits. I was so open anybody could make that shot. Jeeze didn't Jesse have a hell of a game what did he get 25 .. 30." Bobby Edwards limped over as Josh was just sitting and resting. The others were still whopping and hollering "we are Number 1 ." Hey great game Josh thanks for getting us the championship. I know you took a beating out there, Now I know why you got MVP in grammar school. You were shot at half time. I didn't think you had the energy to come out after the half. What happened?" "After all you guys went out for warm ups. My Pops came in and we had a talk. He reminded me that throughout history people have done amazing things. Like soldiers carrying a buddy on their back to save his life. All I had to do was play hard for 30 minutes, even though I was tired. He made me not feel bad for myself and believe I could play hard to finish the game . I could have thought of you playing all those minutes in the trap defense, game after game too but I like to play too.. " "That's because I was afraid if you became the starter I would never play." "Bobby you are a great player, a great defender with such great stamina. I would love to have your strength." "Thanks Josh" Jesse congratulated coach. "Way to go coach, didn't I tell you... game on the line he never misses" "Well you certainly gave him all the help you could out there today" "But I wasn't there at the end for him.... I should have been" "Hey we are champions and in no small part to you and Josh and all the guys on the team. I was very happy to have you guys this year and hope you'll all be back next year." Jesse went over to Josh "Wow state champs, we did it buddy" Josh was taking off his shirt to shower. Jesse saw the black and blue marks on his ribs and welts on his back. He was shocked. He knew he had taken a beating but not like this." The Madville coach came in to congratulate the Hopewell coach and players. Everyone was being nice accepting congratulations. The Madville coach said "where is that # 2 kid played a great game." Jesse had it. "He's over there shit head. Look at what your goons did to him. No doubt on your orders. Get the fuck out of here." Everyone looked as Josh slowly, painfully was walking to the showers. The room went quite they all saw the black and blue marks and welts all over his body Then they all understood what it had taken for them to be champs. Coach Mathews went over to the Madville coach. "You had better leave before these boys decide to give you what your goons gave to Josh. And you know what? I don't think I'd raise one hand to stop them." The rest of the team was yelling,"get out of here go back to your goons" Jesse joined Josh in the shower. They didn't talk much. But Josh was happy to have his good friend, there. The hot water took a little of the pain away. After the showers coach came up to Josh and said. "I think you should have this ball as the game MVP" I don't think so coach. It was a team win. We only won by 1 point. Was my basket more important than any other basket. If Jesse hadn't scored all those points my basket would mean nothing. If anyone on the team didn't rebound or make a steal, or put a hand in a guy's face to have him miss a shot, we don't win. Coach I appreciate the honor. It's good to be appreciated. But you keep the ball certainly you had as much to do with the win as any of us, players. You keep us together when we switched to man to man and half court. Or maybe you could give a ball to every player on the team a ball." Coach again was amazed by Josh's unselfishness and his team spirit. He called the team together, "Today we had a great win. We beat a tough mean spirited opponent. We had one player who gave a supreme effort. Who got beat up and mugged time and again. His body shows the punishment but he kept getting back up. He might have been the smallest guy on the court but I think he had the biggest heart and as much courage as anyone out there. Yeah you know who I mean he also made an impossible winning basket." The team all started chanting "grammar school... Grammar School" Josh just looked down at the floor. Coach hushed them and finished "I just tried to give him the game ball as the game MVP. He won't take it. He said it was a team win. We won by 1 point. If anyone had missed a basket; if Jesse hadn't scored a ton of points; if we didn't make a steal or grab a rebound or didn't defend to force a miss he said his basket would not have meant anything. We could have lost. I guess you all have seen I have come to trust Josh a lot. After all he has a genius IQ and I respect intelligence. ( they chuckled at that ) He said I should keep the ball or give every one of you a ball. I think Josh is right on this; you all played great. So when we get back I'm going to order a bunch of basketballs. They'll be inscribed "State Champs -- MVP -- Entire Team." They all sang or more so yelled. "We are champions... We are champions" even Josh joined in even though it hurt his ribs. As they finished dressing they all stopped by Josh and thanked him and Josh thanked each player back remembering something each had done to contribute to the win. Jesse put his arm around him and walked him out. They separated Jesse went to his mom and dad. Josh to his Pops and Billy. Josh called after him "Great Game New Kid One" just to be sure his parents knew how well he played. Jesse responded "Thanks Mr. MVP" Billy ran up and kissed Josh in front of everyone right on the mouth. "Wow you were fantastic; you're a hero and I'm so lucky to be your best friend. What a game !!!" Pops hugged him as well and said "It takes extraordinary people to do extraordinary things and you are one. I knew you could . Great game I'm so proud of you. How does it feel?" "Probably better tomorrow right now I'm pretty sore. My ribs really are hurting. They feel kind of squishy." "I was going to take you out to celebrate but I think it'll be best if we go straight home. What do you think?" "Home please Pops." Pops stopped at the drugs store on the way. He got Epson Salts, muscle pain ointment and Therma Pain Pads. Pops had his share of pain and knew some things he thought might help. As soon they were in the house Pops said "stay with me now and we're gonna make you feel better. Take these" He gave Josh 2 Advil for inflammatory pain. "Come up stairs and take an Epson Salts bath." "I already took a shower at the gym." "I know, this is different. Billy start the bath water hot as you can stand it." "Josh you are gonna be so hot" Billy said trying to make a joke. Pops helped Josh off with his clothes. It was hard for him to bend. Every muscle in his body was tightening up. His face became very stern as he looked at Josh's bruises and ribs. He ran his finger ever so gently over the nastiest black and blue rib area. Josh flinched with pain. "Josh if I do something that gives you pain don't be the tough shelter kid. You're home know you can say it hurts. None of your team mates will know. It's just me and Billy here. Understand?" "Yes Pops. It does hurt and it hurts bad." "Into the bath with you, son; you are going to have to soak for 20 minutes. Keep your chest, back and ribs under water. Billy will stay with you and replace the water when it goes warm. We want it as hot as you can bear it. The heat will draw healing blood to your muscles. The Epson salts will help as well." Pops took off his socks and shoes and rolled up his pants. Josh got one foot in the tub and then the other. Pops grabbed him from the back under his arms. "Ok we got to try to keep you straight as you sit down, Josh." Through clenched teeth Josh said "mmmm." "Ok bend your knees not you back I'll lower you down trust me" Pops got Josh down as gently as he could. Josh yelled OW. Pops feed him2 more of the Advil, hoping it would ease the pain and let Josh soak. Billy tried chatting with Josh. But he could see he was really hurting. He told him "to just rest, he would take care of the water and would get him if he went under water." Josh trusted, his brother, his friend closed his eyes and dozed a little. Pops was downstairs on the phone. "Coach something has to be done these are not pro athletes playing for a bundle of cash. I'm pretty sure Josh has several cracked ribs. Those refs who did nothing to stop the dirty play and that SOB Madville coach need to be called on the carpet for this. Not right coach ... not right at all. You hear me. If I have to file a lawsuit for damages against them I'll have to file against Hopewell High School as well. I don't want to do that." " I hear ya Mr. Calahan, I agree with you 100%. There is no place in school boy sports for the refs who allowed the punishment or for the Madville coach who instructed his boys to inflect such punishment on Josh. I believe the best course of action is a report to the state school boy athletic association. I know this is not what they expect in any of our games, in any sport on any level. I'm truly sorry for what happened to Josh. He is such a tough kid. I asked several times if he was alright. I never should have accepted his word. I feel as much to blame. I should have looked at him, myself during the game. I saw what was happening but he bounced up every time like the hit was nothing. You take him to the hospital, Mr. Calahan and have him checked out thoroughly and get me a copy of the doctor's report. I'm going to get a copy of the game film. When we have both, I'll file my report and request a hearing. I want those men out of school boy sports period. I wouldn't let Bobby back in the game and I should have been more observant about Josh. I am truly sorry, Mr. Calahan. " Pops said "Josh says you are a fair man who listens to him. I know if you thought he was getting injured like this you would have pulled him. Let's go get the real SOB's who are responsible, ok coach. We got to get them out of school boy sports. I'll get the hospital report to you as soon as I have it. Fair enough" "More than fair tell Josh we all are rooting for him to feel better real soon. Thanks, for calling me, Mr. Calahan better get Josh to the hospital now." "I was going to do just that as soon as we hung up. Good night coach, I'll let you know what the doctors say." Pops went upstairs to see how Josh was doing. Billy was doing his best for his best friend empting and filling the water as soon as it turned the tiniest bit cool. Josh was a pretty shade of pink except around his ribs which were the ugliest black and blue you ever saw. "It's been about 20 minutes, Billy. The water and Epson salts have done as much for him as they can. Let the water out. Bending at his waste will give him excruciating pain; so we have to try to keep him straight as much as possible as he gets up and out of the tub. Josh was awake as the water ran out. "How are you feeling, Josh" Pops asked. "A little better Pops I hardly feel the pain now. I can get up. " "I wouldn't do that Josh" As josh went to get up of course he had to bend at the waste compacted his rib and yelled, " Aww shit wow, wow." Josh sat right back down again . "Pops why don't I listen to you" "Because you are a teen age boy who has to find out the hard way. Billy take off your shoes and socks get in the tub and get him under his arms; I'll do the same from his back. When we get you up Josh wait a second or two and go nice and slow and step out one foot at a time. " "Yes sir" "Ready Billy on three; one , two , three, they lifted him up as straight as could be Josh clenched his teeth and moaned a bit. The patted him dry, Pops got an ace bandage and wrapped his ribs and midsection just tight enough to provide some support. Ok let's get you dressed. "I can sleep like this Pops." "Yeah, well we are going to the hospitable and although forms of nakedness are a common occurrence there walking in naked is not." "Do I have to go Pops.... you can take care of me. Please Pops" "We need to know if those ribs are cracked and the best way to treat them. I gave you a little first aid you need a doctor. Walk real slow in to your room and we'll get you dressed." Josh did as he was told. "Billy get his underwear." Billy did and Pops had Josh just step into them and Billy and Pops pulled them up. Next Pops said his sweat pants and again the same procedure. For a shirt Pops had Josh wear the oversize button down flannel shirt he wore the first night he was with Pops. It was way loose easy to get on and off and warm. Next the sneakers and socks Pops held Josh standing straight and Billy put them on. They eased him down the stairs one step at a time; got his winter jacket around his shoulders. Pops went to the frig and got out the couple ice packs and chopped all the ice cubes into a towel. "OK Billy you sit next to Josh and make sure you keep ice on his ribs. I don't care how cold it is Josh keep the ice on. It'll numb the pain and make you a bit more ambulatory. " The hospital was a short 10 minute drive. Once there Pops went in the get a wheel chair. "Pops I don't need that I want to walk." "Don't be silly boy. They have these here for a reason and in your case it's so you don't do more damage to your ribs." "Ok but I'm gonna feel silly" "Better to feel silly than feel the pain, Billy can drive if you like" The doctors and the nurses were impressed with Pops first aid job on Josh. They got him up on gurney and unwrapped the ace bandage. They got Dr. Brown a handsome young man look like he was just out of med school. "Well let's see what we have here." His touch was so gentle Josh hardly knew he laid hands on him. "I think you have a couple of cracked rib young fella. How did you accomplish this?" "Playing ball," Josh said "Pretty tough game was it." "Yeah we won the state championship" "So this was supervised then" "Oh yeah Hopewell High against Madville High." Billy piped in "Josh hit the winning basket, they tried to mug him before he took the shot." "Really, so I have a genuine basketball hero here." Josh started inspecting the floor tile. Then he said " it was a team win doc, we only won by 1 point. If everyone hadn't done their jobs my basket wouldn't have meant anything." " Spoken like a real team leader, congratulations Josh. I'll have the nurse get some pictures of your ribs so I can figure out the best way to help you heal. OK" Pops grabbed doc out in the hall; explained about the goon tactics and lousy refereeing. He asked for a report so him and coach Mathews could go after the SOB's. "Only too glad to help. Medical science does not know how anyone in Josh's condition would be able to get his hands over his head much less shoot a basketball. Truly remarkable, I'm pretty certain he has 3 cracked ribs I just need the pictures for insurance purposes. You have quite a boy there. I played ball in high school and I know some coaches can be real jerks. I'll do my report at the end of my shift, I'll have one of the nurses call you when it's ready." "Thanks doc" "No thanks needed, by the way I went to Hopewell high not so many years ago. Glad to see them win state." The pictures confirmed doc's diagnosis. "Now Josh there isn't a lot we can do for cracked ribs. Some doctors prefer a cast which is kind of uncomfortable itself but keeps your rib immobile so they can grow back together. Others just use the ace bandage like what your Pops did for you. Either way I'll give you some pain medication. Using the ace bandage does seem to have you heal faster. Which do you want?" "I guess the ace bandage doc if it doesn't seem to be working or is too painful can I still get the cast latter." "Now that is a thinking man's answer. Yes you can." Billy piped up again "he scored genius on his IQ test." "Really wow I am impressed. I can go home tonight and tell my family I treated a true basketball hero and a genius." "Aww doc, Billy cut it out you don't know when to keep your mouth shut." "Don't be mad at your brother, Josh. He is just proud of you. You know sometimes we have to take the spotlight even if we don't want it. Not because we are better than other folks but because we earned it and folks want to congratulate you for your effort. I was telling your Pops I went to Hopewell High myself and I am so happy to hear you won a state championship. Do you know that if I had a hundred patients with cracked ribs like yours and asked them to lift their arms over their head 99 would not be able to do it. Only one Josh, you, not only did it but made a winning basketball shot too. That is quite amazing, really remarkable and goes to that genius brain of yours that you willed your body to do it. It was very special and you should take some pride in it as well. OK?" "OK doc. Thanks" "Now let me wrap you up." The doc cut several pieces off compression tape and put them over the ribs to stabilize them. Next he put some foam padding over the ribs to protect them from getting bumped and finally he wrapped Josh's torso with an ace bandage not too tight but enough to provide support. His hands were so gentle that Josh imagined his dad was doing it. He teared up the doc noticed. "Am I hurting you Josh" "No sir, doc you are so gentle you made me think about my dad like how he would do it." Pops added. "Both of Josh's parents died in an accident several years back and Josh still misses them." "Oh I'm so sorry to hear that, Josh. Now I'm gonna break some rules here I don't what anyone else treating you. When you are all healed I want to be the first to give you a hug. Now you come back and see me in a 3 days time and I'll change the bandage. Today is Saturday so I'll see you Tuesday. You'll only be able to take sponge baths. We don't want the bandage getting all wet do we." "No Sir" "I don't want you going to school till I see you Tuesday. Is that clear?" "Yes Sir" "Now the pain medication will probably make you sleepy so take it at night time or after school once I clear you. You can take 2 tablets every 4 hours. Take advil before school. you can take 2 tables every 2 hours. I'll write a authorization note for your school. I'll have the nurse bring you the pain meds now, Take them don't be some kind of hero and prove how tough you are. We already know that now you prove how smart you are and get healed. That's it, buddy you understand everything." "Yes doc, thanks and thanks for the advice" Josh went to give doc a hug but winced from the pain. Doc put his arm around Josh's shoulders and gave him a hug that way. Josh looked up and smiled at the good doctor. Back in the car Pops asked "was that so bad, Josh" "No Pops cause I have the best grandpa and now the best doctor in the whole world." On the short ride home Josh started yawning and put his head down on Billy's shoulder. The meds kicked in fast. Once home Billy and Pops got half sleep walking Josh up stairs. Got him undressed and into bed. The meds did the rest and he slept through the night.
