Adam and Anna were on the veranda and noticed vultures circling in the sky on the way to Hans' reserve. Anna had a feeling and asked Adam to drive her to the area. It wasn't far from the main road where they went off the road into the bush where the birds were gathering. There they found Hans' body. Anna switched into her emergency room persona and took charge. They chased the birds and covered the body with a blanket. She called the police and told them where they had found Hans' body and asked them to send detectives to the scene. Adam and Anna waited for an hour sitting in the car talking about their time with Hans growing up. It was a sad day for them. They couldn't believe that something like this would happen in their neighbourhood. "It's a funny thing that in the end, it was Han's beloved vultures that found him!" Anna commented. The police detectives took photos and measured the distance from the main road. They confirmed what Anna had already seen, a bullet hole through his chest. They couldn't move the body yet and had to wait for a forensics team to come from town. Anna and Adam waited in the car. One detective came to take their statements and wanted to know how they knew where the body was. Anna explained that the vultures had given them a clue as to where to look. Once Hans' body had been loaded into the mortuary van, they drove back home. Adam called Tom and told him what had happened, and Anna called a couple of friends in town to share the tragic news. She also called Hans' ex-wife to tell her the news who said that she would let some of his school friends know. Later that afternoon a journalist called and wanted further information and Adam told her what he knew. There was a sombre mood on the farm when the workers were told about Hans. He got on particularly well with the staff as he was fluent in Setswana and had mastered the idiom over time. Some of the women had known him from when he was a boy and were in tears. Hans was the most German out of all of them. He had been married in the Lutheran Church near the school and Anna thought that it would be best if they had the funeral there. She called the young Lutheran minister, a man who had been at school with her, and asked him if he would bury Hans. He immediately agreed and asked if he could come see Anna and Adam. Not wanting to be rude Anna agreed and arranged a time. Anna knew that most of the staff on the farm would attend the funeral and she arranged with someone in town to bring a minibus to pick people up on the day. Tom and Klaus wanted to come through immediately, but Adam advised them to wait and rather come the day before the funeral, he was very aware of the work pressure Tom was under. Anna and Adam had to go into town and arrange the cremation. They chose a pine coffin and would have chosen something even more environmentally friendly if there was more choice. There was a delay in releasing the body and the funeral could only be held a week later. The small church was packed, and everyone squeezed in. The organ played quietly in the background when people came in. There were people from all walks of life. Adam, Anna, Tom, and Klaus sat together in the front row. It was hard to hold back the tears. After the sermon, Anna got up with Adam and gave the eulogy. She didn't falter, even though Adam stood next to her sobbing at times. The farm staff broke out into Setswana hymns as the coffin was carried to the hearse. Adam had arranged for a local caterer to provide eats and drinks after the service in the Church Hall, and they saw so many people from when they were young. Anna comforted Hans' ex-wife who was very emotional. They were the last to leave, they thanked the minister and after helping tidy up they took a slow ride home. Klaus had been hit emotionally by all of this, hearing the church language and hearing the hymns took him back to his youth. He thought about his Jehovah's Witness family back home and realised how much he missed them and was determined to call them that evening to make contact again. Anna pulled out a bottle of Hans' favourite whiskey and poured a drop in each person's glass. They drank to Hans, and knew that the valley would never be the same without him. They thought of their grandmother, the matriarch, and how much she loved Hans, Anna and Adam. They couldn't imagine a gathering without him. Adam, Tom and Klaus agreed to go and pack up his things at the cottage the next day and bring it back to the farm. Two of the farm workers joined them with a large trailer to help pack up. There were a lot of natural history books, a bare minimum of clothes, and a sparse selection of furniture. He didn't have too many personal items, but whatever he had they packed in boxes. There was a small box in one of the cupboards containing letters. Adam found a letter he had written in beautiful script to his cousin when he was still young: "Lieber Hans, ich liebe dich, Liebe von Adam." Adam remembered giving the letter to Hans but never thought that he kept it. It brought tears to his eyes and it took him back to his youth. There were also letters from his Gran and from Anna. They packed all his belongings onto the trailer, locked up the cottage, and went back to the farm. This seemed so final, and Adam sobbed, as Tom tried to comfort him. He realised that he would never see Hans again. He gave the box containing letters to Anna who was waiting on the veranda. They packed all the stuff in the barn and agreed that Anna would distribute things among them. Adam took a jacket to remember him. They hugged Anna and Adam in the barn as they cried together. That night Klaus made a lovely vegetable pasta. They sat around the dining room table talking about Hans at school, he was a live wire and the teachers found it difficult to manage him. During this time Klaus slipped out and called his mother in Germany. She answered and he told her where he was and that he loved her. She spoke in whispers and told him never to call again. He was in tears when Tom found him and gave him a hug. These had been emotional days. Tom and Klaus would leave the next day and they wanted to spend the night with Adam. They said goodnight to Anna and all took a shower together washing each other under the powerful stream of water. They were all hard when they dried each other. They formed a daisy chain on the bed and sucked each other off. They then snuggled and fell asleep together. Klaus was glad to be with people who cared for him. The next morning Adam was in the kitchen early making coffee for everyone. Tom joined him and helped carry cups. Tom took Anna her coffee. She was in bed naked, she sat up to take her coffee and he gave her a kiss and told her he loved her. "We all love you, Tom. Remember, Gran also loved you." After breakfast, they hiked up the valley to Dad's spot to tell him what was happening. When they got to the rock pools they stripped, and all had a swim together. "This river will keep us together," Anna said. Tom and Klaus left before lunch. It was difficult leaving the other two behind, but they had to go. Adam and Anna still had to get hold of the family lawyer to deal with Hans' estate. Klaus didn't get a chance to tell Adam about Ishaan, but he and Tom spoke about him in the car. They were keen to have him over for dinner one night. He was vegetarian and Klaus thought he could make his vegetable pasta. Tom suggested that they choose a night when he could off work early. They spoke about Adam and Anna and wondered how they would cope without Hans, Tom felt that Anna had bottled a lot of her emotions, and that the loss would still hit her. They planned to visit them on the farm in a few weeks' time. Ishaan arrived with a bottle of wine, he was neatly dressed, and his hair was combed to the side. Klaus gave him a warm welcome hug and a kiss. Tom hugged him and welcomed him. He was a few inches shorter than Tom and was slightly dwarfed by the string-bean German. Tom immediately saw what Klaus had seen in him – he was warm and engaging and easy to talk to. Tom found out that Ishaan's cousins were at school with him, and he really liked them. Tom laughed to himself thinking of this former Jehovah's Witness hooking up with a Hindu. A wonderful world he thought. Tom told Ishaan about his conservative Catholic parents and how they had thrown him out when they found out he was gay. Ishaan hadn't come out yet but believed that his parents would be more accepting. Tom told Ishaan about the tragedy in Rustenburg, and that he would like to take him to the farm one day. It was a bit awkward for Klaus, he didn't know how to make a move with Tom around. Klaus sat next to Ishaan and held his hand at times. Tom was saved by the phone. The consultant called from the hospital and asked if he could come in to help because the wards were too full. Tom agreed and left after hugging Ishaan and Klaus and told them to have fun. Klaus made a move and began to kiss Ishaan. They ended up lying on the couch feeling each other. Klaus pulled him up and took him to the bed where they stripped naked. They felt each other and Ishaan commented on the size of Klaus' cock. Klaus asked Ishaan to fuck him as he took out the lube. Ishaan said he'd love to try; he had seen scenes like that on some temples in India when he visited India as a child. Ishaan was a natural. He carefully positioned himself and lubed cock and pushed in. Klaus grimaced a little but had learned how to relax. Ishaan began thrusting in and out and came within minutes squeaking in delight. He then moved on to Klaus and sucked him off. They lay on the bed together catching their breath. Klaus needed to take a shower and they took a shower together. Klaus asked Ishaan to stay the night, but he couldn't as his parents were expecting him home. They kissed and agreed to see each other at university on Monday. Tom only got back home the next day at 10, and he was exhausted. Klaus kissed him and put him to bed. He left quietly and went to the bookshop at the mall, while he was there, he called Adam and asked him if there were any developments with Hans' investigation. "Nothing as yet" Adam replied. He also wanted to know how Anna was doing. Adam told him that she was having a hard time and that she missed Hans a lot. She had always looked out for him, and she missed playing that role. Klaus enjoyed being on his own, he thought that the one-roomed apartment was just too small for the three of them and that he had better think of making a move. His scholarship funds would cover the rental of a small apartment. As he stepped out of the mall two Jehovah's Witnesses approached him with a cryptic question. He spoke German and pretended not to understand English. At that point, he realised that his family might just be doing the same thing on the streets of Hamburg. Later that afternoon he discussed the possibility of moving out on his own with Tom. Tom was in tears when he heard the idea and begged him not to. He told Klaus that they could get a three-bedroomed apartment with more space and that he shouldn't think of going on his own yet. Tom was more deeply connected to Klaus than he would care to admit.
