Gary got out of bed and ran to his parents bedroom. He went right in without knocking. Daddy daddy come quick. It's Mattie. David got out of bed and rushed down the hall. He turned into the boys bedroom. No no stop stop I screamed in my nightmare. David sat on the side of the bed. He got hit a few times before he was able to get his arms around me. Mattie Mattie. It's okay. Your safe. No one is going to harm you here. I was still struggling when I opened my eyes to see Mr Boyd trying to holding me. I was covered in sweat and had tears running down my face as I begin to calm down. I'm sorry Mr Boyd. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to wake you up. It's okay Mattie. Your safe now. Mr Boyd sat there just hugging me as I calmed down further. You think you could go back to sleep now? Yes Mr Boyd. I think that I can. So Gary and I laid back done. Soon Gary was fast asleep. As I laid there, I thought that it would be best if I moved on. I was causing to much trouble to this family. They didn't need to deal with my problems. So I quietly got out of bed and removed my wet diaper. I dressed back in my old clothes that I first came here wearing. But before I went downstairs, I took my backpack and put the few things I bought with me in it. Then I quietly slipped out the front door. I started walking West away from the town. I don't know how long I walked, it probably wasn't that far but I was getting tired fast. On the side of the road, I noticed a large cement pipe that went under the road sticking out. I was easily able to crawl inside. I laid down and went to sleep. Gary got up and noticed that Mattie wasn't in bed. He just figured that he was already up and somewhere in the house. He removed his wet diaper when he noticed another wet diaper on the floor besides the bed. I'm going to have to remind my brother where to put his wet diapers Gary said to himself. I jumped in for a quick shower. When I finished, I dried off and pulled on a pair of the new super absorbent underwear my mommy got for me. Lisa was downstairs fixing breakfast for everyone. David poked his head in the boys room to tell them mommy was making breakfast. I'm getting dressed now daddy. Okay champ. David came downstairs and kissed his wife good morning. He got himself a cup of coffee and sat down at the kitchen breakfast bar. How's Mattie this morning. I heard him having another nightmare last night. I comforted him until he was calm enough to go back to sleep. Honey I think we need to have Mattie talk to someone that can help him. Isn't your friend a child psychologist? Yes he is. I was thinking the same thing David said. That smells great mommy Gary said as he came into the kitchen. Where's Mattie sweetie. I thought he was down here already. When I woke up he was already out of bed. Well, what are you two waiting for, go look for him. Breakfast is almost ready. David got up with Gary and search the house for him. Then Gary went outside to look for him in the backyard. Lisa went upstairs to check on something. David up here. David came into the bedroom. His old clothes are gone. As well as his old ripped tennis shoes. Also the frame we put his mommy's picture in is empty. Lisa got on the phone and called her brother. Is Mattie at the pier working. No sis. He hasn't worked since you took him in. I really miss his help. Why do you ask? Cause he's nowhere to be found. I'll check around here and see if I can find him. I'll call Mike as well. David and Gary put on their shoes and headed out the door. They got into the Subaru SUV and headed East towards downtown. I woke up very sore from sleeping on the hard surface as well as being hungry. In the bottom of my backpack, I found a long forgotten energy bar. I quickly opened and devoured it. David had stopped several times to ask people if they've seen a boy fitting the description he gave them. He checked East all the way to the end where the ferry landing was at. He talked to the people there but they hadn't seen any young boy fitting that description either. David called Lisa to give her an update. I'm going to head west away from town now. After sitting for a few moments to get my bearings, I got up and headed out again. The road I was walking on was parallel to the ocean. I decided to walk on the beach sand instead of the road. I took off my shoes and put them in my backpack. As I walked in my bare feet, the cool wet sand felt good on them. I paseed by several men and a couple of older boys surf fishing but at the time this didn't interest me so I continued on. I came to where the beach ended and saw two sets of rock jeddies going out into the water. Still with no destination in mind, I figured I'd go out to the end and sit down to try to figure out what to do next. I got up on the rocks and started walking towards the end. A couple of times I had to jump from one Boulder to another but I did it with no problem. I was pretty far out now as I could see the water down in between the rocks. I went to jump to another rock but when my foot landed my feet came out from under me. I fell off the rock and into the water. The water came up to my waist. As much as I tried to escape I only managed to sink down further until my backpack stopped me. I was getting really scared. Even though I was an excellent swimmer, that didn't help in this situation. The rocks sides were covered with a green slippery substance that I couldn't get a grip on. David saw a couple of fisherman down on the beach and decided to stop the vehicle and ask them. Excuse me gentleman. Have you seen a young boy wearing old ripped clothes come through here earlier. I'm not sure said the older man. Yes dad, a boy like that did come by. He was also wearing a backpack. I saw him going out on the rocks. All eyes turned to looked over towards the rocks. No one saw a boy but then the man said there. He must have fallen. I saw his hand waving. We better hurry. The tides coming in and those rocks out there get fully covered at high tide. Gary stay here. David and the man along with his oldest son took off in a run towards the rocks. When they got to them they carefully started to climb out to where the man had seen the boy. Daddy must be joking if he thinks I'm waiting here. So I ignored my daddy and ran over to the beginning of the jeddies but decided not to follow them out there. It looked really scary. The water was now up to my neck. The waves were crashing over my head. I panicked and struggled even more. The waves and quickly rising tide caused the water to totally covered me. I took a deep breath and held it for as long as I could. I breathed out the last of my breath as ocean water entered my lungs. Then darkness overtook me. David and the man reached me but the water had already covered me completely. All they could see were the tips of my fingers. They both reached into the water and were able to grab my arms. They were able pulled me up and hurriedly carried me back to the beach. His son had already called 911 and we could hear a siren in the distance getting closer. Being a teacher, I was required to know CPR. After I removed his backpack, I began to perform on him. About two minutes later the paramedics were just about to where we were at. Mattie started convulsing. Then a large amount of water came gushing out of his mouth. The paramedics took over and quickly put an oxygen mask on his face. They strapped him to the gurney and took off back through the sand to the ambulance. David reached out and picked up Gary who had grabbed Mattie's backpack. He carried him as they ran after the two men. Looking back David yelled thank you to the others. David jumped into his vehicle and turned around. He got right behind the ambulance that had it's lights flashing and siren blaring. David ran every stop sign and traffic light to keep up. He told his son to use the onboard phone to call mommy. A worried Lisa recognized the number and answered the phone. Did you find my little boy. I can't explain but meet us at the Everest Emergency Care Center. Lisa didn't bother getting dressed and grabbed her keys as she ran out of the house in just her house dress and slippers. The ambulance arrived and took Mattie in through the restricted back area. David parked and they came rushing in. He went up to the check in desk to find out where his son was. The nurse at the stationed there, told him he needed to fill out some forms. The hell with that, I need to be with my boy. Daddy over here Gary said. David went to Gary and saw that Mattie was being carted off to the back area. He started pulling on door handles when a security guy came over to help. What seems to be the problem here. My son just arrived by ambulance and I need to be with him. Okay let me go check with the doctor. Moments later the guard came back out to let him know they are working on him and as soon as they can, they will let you go back there. Why not in the mean time, you fill out the paperwork. David sat down and did just that. Lisa came rushing in and looked around panicking. She spotted her nurse friend working and went over to her. My husband said that our son was taken here. Do you know how is he. Lisa you son is fine. He's standing right over there. Lisa turned her head and looked. No no. My foster son. He just arrived by ambulance. Let me go check. Moments later she returned. Right now Lisa the doctors are working on him. Can I go be by his side? As soon as your allowed, I'll let you in. Mommy said Gary as he came rushing over to her. Mattie was hurt. Wheres daddy at she asked David came over to hand in the clipboard back to the nurse. How's Mattie doing? Come let's sit down and I'll tell you what I know. They all say down and talked. The doctors worked quickly on the boy and it was determined that he had almost drowned from running out of air and swallowing the oceans water. They sent him to get x-rays of his legs and chest area. The doctor came out and went to the nurses station. After talking to the day nurse he walked over to the boys parents. Excuse me are you the parents of the boy who was just bought in. Yes he's our foster son. Well he's a very lucky boy. He swallowed a lot of water. If he hadn't been given CPR when he did, he'd would be in worse condition then he is. Yes I'm glad that our school requires us to be certified. Well you probably saved you son today. He has several cuts on his legd and possibly a few brushed ribs. I've sent him off get x-rays. If you'll follow me, I can take you back to his room. It was twenty minutes later when Mattie was wheeled back in on the bed from x-rays. Oh sweetie Lisa said as she kissed him on the cheek. You had us all worried. Why did you leave like that. Mattie had his arms stretched out and tears burst from his eyes. Mommy I'm so sorry. I thought it best if I left. I've caused you all to much trouble. It dawned on Lisa that Mattie called her mommy. Lisa took her boy into her arms and comforted him. Telling him that he wasn't a burden. That he completed the family. The doctor came back in and told everyone that there son had no broken bones but would be very sore for a few days due to his bruised ribs. I also noticed that his bladder had been damaged. Was he beaten. When he came into our lives. He had a high fever. So we gave him a shower to cool him down. We noticed several bruises and long thin strips on him. Our doctor told us, he had his bladder damaged. He would need to wear diapers. Well they do have operations that could correct his situation. Yes doctor we know all about them. Gary here had a gymnastics accident when he was six years old. He raptured his bladder and went through several operations. He's a lot better now but must wear diapers. The nerve that signals the brain got damaged. Well there might be hope for your other son. Thank you doctor. Can we take our son home now. Just let me have the nurse put an ace bandage around his ribs. I'll recommend you give him children's Tylenol if he experiences any pain. An hour later David carried Mattie out to the Subaru SUV and laid him down in the back where they kept a spare blanket and pillow. Everyone went home and Mattie got set up in the living room. A fax was sent from a private detective to his client in Vancouver. Well that's chapter 2. I hope you are all enjoying the story so far. I want to thank everyone for all your kind words and encouragement. Au revoir Mattie
