So pitch in what ever you can. I'd like to thank all of you who have emailed me to let me know that your enjoying the story so far. I need to make a couple of corrections. In my hast to post my last chapter, I forgot to verify people's names. Gary's uncle who runs the west end pier is Mr Danny Porter not Mr Payton that Mattie stated. Mattie also told the two bullies that officer Cooper saw them push him but it really was officer Miller who saw them. Now on to the tale. Chapter 4 Sir, the gentleman are ready to leave now. Good Phillip, escort them back to my office and have Margaret give them their credentials back. So Phillip did as his boss told him to do. After Margaret exchanged the badges for their credentials, two security men escorted the two private detectives to their vehicle. Their they took photographs of the car and plate. They were observed until they left the yard. Margaret, did you do as I asked? Yes sir Good work. Thank you sir. Phillip, send me a copy of the surveillance video that shows the boy please. I've already made a copied and sent it to your email. I want you to lock the video in the vault. Yes sir. -------------------- Hello Paul, have you seen my son's? Yes they are in the training center. I had Evan put Mattie in the jacuzzi. I thought it might help his ribs. A Thank you Paul. David walked into the locker room and turned left into the training center. Off in the corner he could see Evan giving Mattie a shoulder rub down. Gary was sitting on the bench until he saw his daddy enter. He jumped up and went over to him. Hi daddy Gary said as he gave him a hug. Hello sport. Hello Mr Boyd. How's my son Evan? He's doing fine. I didn't realize that he bruised his ribs a few days ago. All those twist and flips he did, had to of put a strain on his chest muscles. I looked up and saw Mr Boyd. I wasn't sure if I was in trouble or not. I'm sorry Mr Boyd. I know you told me to take it easy but I had to do something. That man was ruining Dillons natural flow and ability. He wasn't looking out for his best interest. Why would you say that Mattie, Evan asked. Cause when my daddy (sniffing)decided to have me join the Canadian Acrobatics Squad he wanted Terrance Gavin to train me. I asked him why. My daddy said that there are bad coaches that will train several different athletes. But will at times sabotage a competitor of an athlete he is also training if it means he'll make more money doing so. Is that what you think coach Davis was doing? I don't know but all you need to do is see who else he is training. That should tell you if any of them are Dillons competition. That makes a lot of sense, Mattie. How did you get so smart. I don't know. My daddy (sniffles) says I have a photographic memory. So I guess I just remember things when it's important. Excuse me, I didn't mean to be eavesdropping. Who are you Mr Boyd asked. I'm Dillons father, Dillon Sawyer Sr. Evan, could that be true, what this boy said. Yes sir. Isn't that against the rules, Mr Boyd asked. Yes and a coach can get black balled from it. But you must have solid proof. Mr. Boyd can you help me out. I don't want to turn into a prune. Terrance Gavin said you should only spend twenty minutes in these at a time. I reached up and Mr Boyd grabbed me under my arms and hoisted me out. Let me have a look at you. Your bruising is almost totally gone. Mr Sawyer saw the faint blue marks on a few of my ribs. If you were hurting, why did you do my son's routine? Cause that stupid coach was going to ruin Dillons natural talent by making him think he's a rightie. How could you know this? I'm left handed. We can easily tell others who are by the way they move. Well Mattie, if I can call you that. I guess so, it's my name. Would you be interested in coaching my son? I can't sir. I'm not a coach. I'm also trying out for this years team and would be in the same age group as Dillon is. Dillon looked sad. Mattie saw this. How about Dillon train with Gary and me. We can spot for each other and point out where we could improve. What do you think Dillon his daddy asked. Yes yes yippee as he pumped his fist in the air. Well I guess that's your answer. Hold on a moment. Mattie turned to Gary Brother is this okay with you? I'm sorry Dillon but my brother Gary must agree also. It was his idea for me to tryout. I wouldn't be where I am now without him. Gary looked up and had a big smile plastered across his face. Gary leaned over and whispered in my ear. Mattie, do you think it would be a good idea to put some clothes on? Maybe a diaper. I looked down and realized that I was naked as could be. I quickly bought my hands down to cover my privates and hid behind Mr Boyd. Evan, Mr Sawyer, Mr Boyd, Dillon and Gary broke out in laughter. My face turned red. Mr Boyd turned and picked me up and took me into his arms. There is nothing to be ashamed about. You have a beautiful heart. Let's get you in a diaper. Daddy, not in front of everyone. I mean Mr Boyd. I buried my face into his chest embarrassed. Here is my phone number. Give the house a call in two days and we will work out a schedule. By Mattie. Dillon said. I quickly raised my hand and waved. Evan finished getting dressed and left. It's okay Mattie. Everyone has gone. I just want you to know that you can call me daddy. I'm sure your real mommy and daddy wouldn't mind. They are still with you in your memories and will always be looking out for you. Gary had stripped off and was trying to diaper himself but couldn't get the tabs tight enough. His daddy showed him how to accomplish it. Soon he was snuggly in his diaper once again. Mr Boyd helped Mattie put his diaper on after he was oiled and powdered. Gary put the diaper supplies back in his locker and they left together. Daddy, I'm going to need to get more slim lined diapers for my locker and Mattie is going to need them also. Okay you two, we can stop by the medical supply store on the way home. Let's get going before your mommy sends out a search party for us. -------------- Good job today Jimmy. Your punishment for what you did has been paid. But I've only worked for ten days. I was told my punishment would last all summer. We talked it over with officer Miller and he agrees with us. Plus we can't hire you for the summer internship job with the beach patrol if your doing community service. What are you sayjng? You want to hire me? That's right. But I'm only thirteen years old. Don't you need to be fourteen to work. Yes but your working on an internship. So all your pay will be accumulated in an account and given to you when your internship ends. When's that? On your fourteenth birthday. Can I tell my parents? Of course you can. Jimmy was overwhelmed by this news that he hugged everyone. I'll see you tomorrow at seven o'clock. Okay. Jimmy in his excitement, ran all the way home. Later he had his dad give him a ride back to get his bike. ------------------ Ring ring Hello Sir we have located the point where the boy boarded a freight train heading southeast. Do you have the trains destination. Yes but the train made several stops on its two day journey to the coast. Well, I suggest that you get everyone in the field and take care of this matter. Yes sir. Click Let's call your cousins in Panama City Florida and have them start at the last stop and work back towards us. Make sure to fax them a picture of him. -------------- Dammit Dawson, where are you at now. I'm in Louisiana sir. My contact says he received a bulletin from a hospital clerk of a boy matching Mr Bentleys missing son. Only this boy has shorter hair. I'll know him on sight if I can locate him. Is there anything else I can do for you? Yes, can you wire me another thousand dollars? Yes that's no problem. You better be saving your receipts. I've got a paper bag full of them for you already. Keep me posted, we hear the judges decision tomorrow morning. Will do. -------------- We pulled up in front of a one story brick building with two entrances. Okay Gary, you know the rules. What's does Mr Boyd mean Gary. Gary looked at me sideways. I didn't know why. It means that we have to get our own diapers and supplies. Plus anything else we may want to get. But keep that to a minimum. Are you serious. I can't do that. Everyone will know. Mattie, this is a medical supply store. Everyone that comes in here is probably wearing diapers like we are. I guess so. I see your point when you put it that way. We went over to the youth section and saw two other boys bent over looking at the different types of diapers. Hey Gary, how is it going? Hi Kenny. Hi Pete. You know them. Ov course I do. We train together at the same gym. Only they are boxers like their daddy whose over there talking to daddy. I turned and saw the same man from the arcade. The one called Kenny stood up. Hey, your the boy everyone at the arcade is talking about. No one can believe that you beat the game. Two men came there and asked if anyone knew who beat the game. Something about a hidden award the the winner would receive. That's so cool Mattie, you should definitely check it out. I'd rather not Gary. It was an easy game to beat. The money is better off going to the children's hospital for cancer. The boys went back to looking at the different diapers. Kenny and Pete recommended the new sport diapers. They were lightweight and absorbent. Each boy picked up a case of super thick, soft and absorbent tab style night diapers as well as a case of super absorbent tab style sports diapers. The boxes were stacked one on top of the other so the boys couldn't see. The manager was giving them directions so they wouldn't run into the other shelves or each other. But the boys hit them anyway. Luckily their daddies came to their rescue and took a box from each boy. Each group had their stuff rang up but Mattie ran back to the isle and grabbed himself a sippie cup. He sat it down next to his diapers a little red on his face as Mr Boyd rubbed his hair. The manager rang up the merchandise. Well Mr Boyd it looks like you added to your family. Yes we did. This is our foster son, Mattie. Did you say foster son? Yes I did. In that case you get a fifty percent discount cause the state pays half. Well that will come in handy. I put another sippie cup in the bag for Gary as well. I see the way he always eyes those when he comes in here. Also I added a couple of binkies. Thank you sir. After everything was loaded up, they went home. ------------- Lisa was working late getting a big order ready for morning delivery. Her two associates Mary and Anna were helping her. It took them two extra hours to get the fifteen dozen cookies baked along with the ten dozen assortment of cupcakes. All in all when all the baking was done. Twenty dozen cupcakes, twenty-five dozen assortment of cookies and fifteen loaves of grainfree almond raspberry bread had been baked. They wrapped up everything and put it into the walk in cooler. Locked up and everyone headed off for home. -------------- Gary talked his daddy into ordering from Anzalones pizza and pasta. I wanted pineapple and bacon. Gary wanted mushrooms and cheese. So Mr Boyd ordered two small pizzas our way and added two Lasagnas and garlic breads for him and Lisa. The boys went up to put away there diapers and get ready for dinner. Mattie was heading downstairs when Gary stopped him. He took his hand and went over to the two seater sofa. After they sat down Gary started. Mattie stop being so brave. Your only going to hurt yourself if you keep it all bottled up inside you. I'm your brother. You can tell me your pain. This way we can share it. I can't Gary, its to painful. Mattie you've been screaming and kicking and punching me in your sleep every night since you got here. It takes everything I have to hold you. I always end up crying myself to sleep. I'm living your pain every night anyway. It might make it easier to know what happened. Mr Boyd had come upstairs to tell the boys that the food would be there in fifteen minutes. He heard everything Gary had said to Mattie. Mr Boyd had his phone recording the conversation. Mattie took a deep breath and began at the beginning. He told Gary about just finishing his daily swim before he was going to get ready for the big companies BBQ party celebration. That was when the gunshots started up. He heard rapid shots going off and people screaming. His daddy's voice was in his head. So his instincts kicked in and he ran to the outside panic room. Once he locked himself in, he turned on the monitors and started the recordings. He watch in horror as the scene unfolded in front of him on the monitors. He saw people falling to the ground. Then the men searched all the bodies. He saw his mommy or daddy laying on the ground. Something was said by the man but my mommy turned and in her last breath looked at the camera and mouthed I love you. I knew she was talking to me. Then I saw my daddy crawling over to mommy. As he crawled, I saw him. The man who use to watch after me when I was little. He walked up to my daddy. Screaming he said, All you had to do was sign the contract. My daddy raised up and looked my way. He stared right at the camera. I love you. I'll always be with you. Then I heard a shot. I knew my daddy was dead. I had tried the phone but it wasn't working. The short wave radio was nothing but static. I remembered the GPS survival tracking beacon that the coast guard and rescue squads could pick up. I turned it on and waited. I continued to watch the monitors. Mrs Boyd had come home half way through my confession. She was in tears as was Mr Boyd. I was also crying but Gary somehow stayed brave for me. I could tell he wanted to cry but didn't. Then I watched the men go from room to room. They were looking for me. They kept calling out my name. Mr Henry opened every safe but the one in my room. I guess he didn't know about. Finally all the men left. I had been up for two days when I succumbed to sleep . The next day I saw police had finally arrived. Our place was remote and out of the way. I heard digging and then a cutting noise when a metal tube that bent was pushed through. Like James Bond It swiveled around and looked at me. It was pulled out and the cutting started. I grabbed the 9m and put it next to me. Then I removed the SD cards from the three recorders and hide them. I turned off and disabled the recorders to make them think they weren't on during the killings. The hatch was opened and the nerve of him. Mr Henry called out to me. Telling me I was safe and I could come out. I picked up the 9m and fired a round into the wall by the hatch. They ordered me to put the gun down but as long as my family and friends killer is still alive that wasn't going to happen. They dropped in two canisters and closed the hatch. I woke up strapped to a gurney in the back of an ambulance with a police officer sitting next to me. Two days later I found out that I was taken to a children's psychiatric hospital. For a week I was drugged and interrogated but not by the police. It was by a private detective agency. Soon my daddies lawyer got me released but before he could get custody of me, the Canadian children protective services hauled me away and put me in a foster home. I had no communication with anyone. I was given some kind of drug that kept me calm and quiet but soon I started to fake swallowing it. That's when the nightmares started and shortly after my foster dad started caning me in my lower back and sides. I put up with this for two months. Then I hid myself on his truck and got across the border. I jumped out, I think in Seattle Washington. I walked for hours until I came across a train yard. I found one opened and climbed aboard. I hide under a grate. When I woke up and it was daylight. The train was moving really fast. This went on for two days and two nights. Not including the time I was asleep. Finally the boxcar I was in was unloaded and pushed back. I woke up that night and gathered my stuff and left. I wondered for two days always heading towards the rising sun until I reached the ocean. I saw a pier and climbed the wall to get up onto it. I walked to the end and sat down to think of my future. I even thought about jumping off the end of the pier. But then he would win and I couldn't let that happen. So I ate the my last energy bar. On the way back, I picked up all the trash and threw it away. Just because I hate litter and this was a beautiful place. I was getting tired and ended up under the pier. Luck would have it that I found a towel to sleep on. You know the rest. When I finally finished recounting all that happened, I started screaming and screaming. Louder and louder. Mr Boyd and Mrs Boyd entered the room. Gary couldn't be brave any longer and broke down crying in his mommy's arms. Why would someone do something like that mommy? I was wild. Swinging my arms and hitting Mr Boyd all over his body. I was in a blind rage. It was pure hate. I cried until I couldn't cry anymore. I slumped right there on the floor. I curled up into a fetal position and wouldn't let anyone near me. That was until Gary spooned me up from behind and held me. The buzzar had been sounding for the last twenty minutes but went unanswered so the driver took the food back to the restaurant. Mr Boyd took a pillow and put it under Matties head and then put a second one under Gary's head. Then he covered them both up with Gary's comforter. Before he closed the light off he said, son take good care of him. He must really love you for allowing you to get so close. Goodnight. David and Lisa went downstairs and sat there looking at each other stunned. They had a vague picture before of what happened to Mattie but to experience it as Mattie told Gary what he saw was beyond anything that they could have imagined. David took out a pad and pen. As hard as it was he rewind the recording and played it again. He took notes of key things that Mattie had described and people's names. When he was finished, his tear stained face was evidence that no matter how many times he listened to it, It had a profound impact on him. David made six copies of the recording and emailed them off to separate locations with strict encrypted instructions. The last one on his phone he downloaded onto a cd and made three copies of that. He put one in his safe, he'd put one in his banks safety deposit box and the last one he'd mail to a secret po box number. Lisa and David went to bed after looking in on the boys. ----------------- Jimmy was up before the roosters could crow. He was downstairs eating a bowl of cereal getting ready for his first day of work. His mommy had packed him a lunch the night before and had it in the refrigerator for him to take that morning. ---------------- Mattie awoke in a soaking wet diaper curled up on the floor with Gary snuggled in behind him. He got up and removed his diaper and put it in the bin. He got into a soightkt cold shower to clean himself up. Gary was right behind him and got in with him. Neither one said anything. They finished and got out. Put on each other's diapers and then got dressed for a morning run. Downstairs they left a note and put on their shoes. Once outside they loosened up and started to jog. ---------------- Jimmy got on his bike and started peddling towards the beach patrols headquarters by the west end pier. He thought he noticed two kids in front of him but it was still to early to see clearly. As he got closer, he could definitely see that they were young boys. He pulled up bedides them and saw it was Mattie. Mattie saw the kid on the bike pull up beside them. Good morning, Jimmy. How are you doing on this wonderful morning. I'm doing great. I'm off to my first day of my beach patrol internship. Gary was slightly confused about Matties joyfulness after what happened last night. That's great news. We'll don't let us keep you from being on time. Bye and have a good day. Gary and I had jogged to the pier. We went up the ramp to the gate. Okay brother, where does uncle Danny keep the spare gate key. Gary went over to the last pier post next to the fence and bent over. At the bottom of the post, he pushed in on the wood. The wood went in and the top came out. The key was revealed. Gary smiled and unlocked the gate and put the key back. Together we got right to work and quickly and efficiently got all the trash bags tied and new ones out into place. I collected all the cans and bottles and cleaned them. Gary washed out the trolley and I sweeped the steps. Next we opened to shop and got all the bait lockers refilled. Put out all the fishing gear and then together we cleaned the two bathrooms. We started up the grill and put on the hot dogs to slowly start to cook. We stocked the sodas and sorted the candy. It was 6:45am and still no uncle Danny. The first customer showed up and needed a fishing pass and rod with some bait. Gary had worked with his uncle before and took the lead. He took care of the register as I got all the gear and bait for the customers. Customer after customer came through. Finally at 7:25am uncle Danny showed up. He came up the ramp to unlock the gate. It was already opened and he looked out on the pier. There must have been forty people fishing. He went out a ways when he saw his good friend Mike from the corner store. How did you get in. You mean that you didn't have your nephews open up for you. What ! Danny turned and jogged back to the store passing a couple more regulars heading the other way. When he entered the door he saw Mattie helping the customers get fishing gear and bait. While Gary tended the register. Gary finally noticed uncle Danny as did Mattie. As if they were thinking the same thing. Uncle Danny were going to have to dock you an hours pay for being late. Complete silence Then a roaring laughter as uncle Danny broke out in hearty laughing. I ran over to him and stood before him. I waited until he calmed down. Then I hugged him and said. Uncle Danny, thank you for everything you did for me. I can never pay you back for your kindness you showed me. I pulled down him as I tippy toed and kissed his cheek. Uncle Danny looked over at Gary who was smiling. Your very welcome Mattie. It makes me proud that you call me uncle. I want to also thank you both for what you did this morning. I got a flat and didn't have a spare. I had to wait for Tony to tow me and drop me off here. So Gary what's the count so far. Forty seven. Uncle we need more shrimp and blood worms. We don't sell blood worms. Oops! Mattie said. Well you may want to start. I found hundreds of them under the pier this morning when I was cleaning up down there. I made twenty dozen and used your Chinese containers. We've been selling them for five dollar a dozen. Well let me take over now and you two run along. We got up a went to leave. Hold on. Uncle Danny gave us each a twenty dollar bill. And don't think about putting it in my tip jar. We smiles on our faces, we planted a kiss on each of his cheeks. Outside I grabbed the overflowing wagon and headed carefully towards Mike's corner store. Ding Ding Good morning Mike, Mattie said. Oh sorry your not Mike. No I'm Mike Jr. You must be Mattie and I remember you Gary. Hey Mike. I see your back for another summer. Yes I am but this time I'm not going back. Oh so cool. Well lets count what you have. That's some haul you have today. $23.45 total. I pulled them to the back and shouted for Gary to get our breakfast. So Gary, whose the cutie. He's my brother. Can you make us two egg and cheese rolls please. Gary was steaming at what Mike had said but he couldn't understand why his words hurt him so much. I came back from the back area. Gary, I'll grab us each a chocolate milk. Okay So your total in your account after deducting the food is $47.15 Mike can you please put Gary's name down on the account. Mattie, no its your money. We're brothers and what's mine is yours. Mike put our stuff in a bag and told us to have a good day. Nice meeting you Mattie. If you ever want to come by and talk. I'm a great listener. Thanks I said as I grabbed Gary's hand and walked out of the store pulling the wagon back to the pier. Then Gary decided to go over to his mommy's bakery so we could sit down and eat our breakfast. Hello boys. If you're looking for your mommy she had a large delivery Anna and her had to take into the city. That's okay ma'am. We just came in to eat our breakfast before going to practice at the gymnastics center. Oh that reminds me. Can I use your phone. Sure sweetie. Ring ring Hello honey you back already. No daddy it's me Gary. Could you call Dillon to let him know Mattie and I are going to the gym. Tell Mattie to take it easy. I will. We finished eating our food and headed out for a long walk to help digest our food before heading to the gymnastics center. ‐------------------- Gavel banging All rise for the honorable judge Kingston Please be seated.
