Dressed in my smallest sheepskin coat, a navy fisherman's knit hat on his head pressing his silver-blond hair against his shoulders, and a pair of enormous woolen gloves on his hands, Reed looked like a Norwegian elf. I wished that he didn't have to wear his old worn sneakers as they were less than waterproof and slippery in the snow, but I stuffed an extra pair of woolen socks in a pocket. He barely missed having his extremities suffer from frostbite the day before. I didn't want to tempt fate now. >From the woods I heard the unmistakable sound of an owl hooting. I never believed the common superstition that the call of an owl during the day meant death. I heard owls in the daylight often so I knew that it wasn't true. In fact birds were filled with omens for mankind. They were visible angels and I always listened to them. The owl signified that it was still hungry, so there had been disruption in the night, perhaps they came back at night, and found it too dark to see. I was quite sure that they were unaware as yet that I had brought Reed into my house. The hunters had not yet returned, and now I knew who they were. Hopefully we would be gone before they were back. I refused to think about their motives, and was determined to shield Reed from his past more than ever. I looked at his rosy cheeks, and large eyes that seemed so innocent compared to what he had put up with, Every fiber within me knew that I would fight for this boy. He most likely would not have made it through the arctic night. I just hoped that the snow wasn't too deep for take off, but I had a plane that could almost do a catapult take-off. It had dropped well below zero last night, I could only hope for the best, but I had flown in much worse conditions. We finally came to my hanger where I kept the plane. "Is that yours Lee?" It's awesome!" " This babe is a Goshawk" .I knew that he wouldn't fully understand the significance of it. "You really love birds don't you Lee. You even named your airplane after one." "Actually Reed, this is a stripped down military bird." "Really, it's a fighter plane?" "Well, not anymore, but it will get us out of town fast" I opened the canopy so he could get inside. I then reached down to help him climb up. I felt a gloved hand in mine. He was looking at me his mouth open, "Amazing." "Yep, and it looks like good news, the winds have brushed the snow from my runway, I just need to use the spreader to put down sand for traction, I have plenty of gas and I'd like to warm up the engines so why don't you hop aboard, I have a few packages to stow behind you in the back." It felt so good and natural to help him up into the plane, his hand still in mine until I had to let it go. I was finished in no time and got in the plane next to Reed. "You're not afraid to fly are you?" "Heck, no!" His eyes were lit up. I thought to myself. "So you're a little bird too, aren't you my boy." I shifted into gear and studied the machinery of the half-million dollar toy. The truth was it wasn't really mine. I kept it for a friend who had very deep pockets, and a curious taste in forms of transportation. This would not be the first time I would take her out. I turned to Reed for a moment that was buckled up beside me. "Ok this might be a very bumpy take-off. Once we're off the ground you will be my co-pilot, okay." "Thanks Lee!!!" I pulled the Go out of the hanger, and used an electronic garage door opener to close it up. I say a brief prayer, and we were racing down the runway. I mentally envisioned her lifting and as I did I was surprised. It felt like another mind was working in tantrum with mine. Did the boy also have the gift? I let out my breath when we were up and I took a quick view of my property, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I gave Reed an aerial map to hold, but I really didn't need it. Our first stop where I would re-fuel was one that I could almost fly to blindfolded, so I used this time to find out more about my little co-pilot." "Wow, It's so beautiful Lee!" Reed was looking at the impressionistic landscape that was the world below, glazed in a silver frost that made it both soft and dazzling, kind of like his eyes. "Have you ever flown before this?" I asked. By now Reed had taken off the gloves and was biting his nails, I realized with my peripheral vision, how short and raged his nails were. "When I was a little boy I once went with my Mother to visit my Grandmom in Denver." "Is your Grandmother still in Denver." "No she's dead." "When did your Mother die?" "About two years ago, I think she had cancer." "Do you have a real father somewhere?" "No, I don't. I was a test-tube baby or something, my Mom said she wasn't ever going to get married, that was before she met my Step-Father." "Reed, he was no type of father to you. Let's call him your Step- ah Step-down, that was what he was doing to you, bringing you down." "Yeah, I went down alright, I went down a lot." I knew what he was referring to so I asked boldly "When did your Step-Down start making you have sex?" "Right after my Mother died. We came back from the funeral, everyone had gone, and he made me put on her nightgown. I said no, and he whipped me and I was too upset to fight so I did as he asked. The next day he took me out of school told them it had been my Mother's wish that I was home-schooled, but she had been too sick. He set up a computer so I could do some schoolwork; it didn't have any connection to the Internet like your computer. I had to do the housework too. Then other men started to come over, men who liked boys, or might if I seduced them, and the bad thing was I really liked the sex part, at least it gave me someone to talk to. I guess that's the right word, my Step-da-down would take pictures with a hidden camera. I guess he blackmailed them." "You poor kid." "But Lee, I'm really bad. I liked it, the sex, not with him because I hated him, but with the others because they made me feel good." "I shouldn't ask you this, but I want to know did he have them use protection Reed?" "Yeah, I know all about sexually transmitted diseases, I had a computer program about medical things. Yes he had them use rubbers, because he didn't want to get sick from me I guess." We hit some turbulence and the conversation stopped. I had heard too much." "I was told that when I got into your house I was to get you close to the window and get you to go as far as I could." He volunteered. I was feeling sick to my stomach, "And how far was that?" I should know when to keep my mouth closed. Reed blushed which was out of character. "All the way. If I could have gotten you to put your cock in my ass, they would have been very happy." "Reed it makes me feel so cheap, I can only imagine how you feel." "I have felt like a whore, a deceiving lying bitch. I have felt like that for a long time. That's why when I saw his gun I tried to use it. I was sick of it, and I only wanted to run away," "Well let's not call this running away. Let's instead agree that we're running to something. We're running to your future." I know it sounded dumb when he had been through so much, but that was what I wanted for him. It didn't hurt to say it out loud. "You know what's funny Lee, out of all the men I ever knew you're the only one I really would like if you would do it with me." "Let's get one thing clear Reed. You may be old enough for a pilot's license, but the law say's that you need to grow up a bit before you start offering your precious body to me." "Well you can have me anytime you want, it's all I have, and you are doing so much for me." Tears caught in my eyes. "Thank you Reed, maybe some day, but not now. I am not your Step-down, or one of his friends." "I wonder how come they took me to your pond? It's weird isn't it? Did they tell you that I was down at you pond?" "Yes, someone told me." I wasn't going to tell him what I thought. I was not to find the boy for many more hours. If it wasn't for the birds, I may never have known in time. Instead I told him "They were giving me a rare gift. I don't think that they'll like the thank you note though." "Huh?" "Is your seatbelt on? We're going to land soon." "Yes, I never took it off." "Good boy", I looked at him long and hard. Damn he was beautiful! I said my silent prayer, as I lowered our altitude.
