Strike two Chapter 12 Adian knew it was gone the minute he hit the ball. He could see the look on Freddy's face as he passed him at first base. Blake had his hands in the air clapping as Adian rounded second. When he passed the second baseman the kid told him it was a nice hit. He thanked him and continued on to third where he high fived Blake before going home. He was met at home plate by Aaron and the rest of the team. Aaron hugged him while the rest high fived them and slapped his back. JD flew out to left field for the final out for the inning. Blake made the changes. He had to because they were now ahead fifteen to one. So, he had to get the players in for at least one at bat be for the game was called because of the ten run rule. He put Jose at catcher, Freddy pitching, Philips at first base, Peter in center field for Bobby and Aaron at second for Kristopher. Logan and Scott stood next to the dugout talking. "You know Adian is probably the best all round player here at this state tournament." Scott observed. "I never figured him as someone who was interested in anything but running. He is a natural at doing that." Logan said. The game was called at the top of the forth inning because of the ten run rule. With the final score of 16 to 1. When shaking hands one of the boys from the Ganders asked Adian if he could sign his baseball. Before he knew it there were several other boys asking Adian for an autograph. Adian was becoming the star of the tournament. One of the tournament directors came over to Blake and asked if Adian would be interested in being in the home run derby. Blake said he would ask him. Then the director asked if Jose, Carlos and JD would like to try also. The Cougars would be playing the winner of the losers bracket to see who would be going into the final on Sunday. Adian and Aaron were both surprise the Rabbits beat the Wilton Bobcat 6 to five in extra innings. Richard and Robby along with the rest of the team walked over carrying their equipment. They would be the next team to play. They would be playing the Ganders next and the winner of that game would be playing the loser of the next team from the other bracket to see who would be playing to move up. The Cougars next game wasn't until four. Adian wanted to go see Scott play but both Mary and John had to talk him into staying to cheer on his friends and the other Wilton team that played. Adian Knew they were right he should stay but he really would like to go and watch Scott's team play. He had only watched Scott play in two games this year. The reason he was unable to get to his games was because they were scheduled the same night that he played. Usual either Mary and John would come to watch them play. His grandmother and grandfather kept their promise and showed up for a few games. They also kept their promise and video taped all his games. John Holand had also taken the videos to one of his friends and had it edited so it high lighted the best moments. That way his mother would be able to see her son playing baseball. Adian said good bye to Jake, Mary and John. He gave Logan a big hug and then did the same to Scott wishing him good luck in his game. Again wishing he could go with them. Aaron and his dad just watched Adian with his family. Aaron envied Adian because he was so close to his uncle and foster family. Sure he had his father and mother. But his father was the only one who really cared for him. His cousins were all older than him and his father was an only child like himself. Aaron loved having Adian staying with him. He loved his father but having Adian with him just made thing so much better. Aaron surprised himself by what he had done after coming out of the shower. It just felt like the right thing to do. He was glad Adian didn't ask about what he let slip. Blake gathered the boys around him and told them the next game they played would be for the regional championship. If they won that game they would be playing in the championship game. If they lost they would have to play one more game, if they lost that game they would be done, but if they won they would be playing for the championship. Then he made the announcement that there would be a home run derby after their last game of the day and four Cougar players were asked to participate. Carlos, Jose, JD and Adian. After he announced the players, a loud cheer went up. John told the boys to relax and to stay out of the sun. It would be in the Nineties by the four o'clock game. John made sure both Aaron and Adian were getting enough fluids. The two boys sat and watched the Ganders next game. The Ganders were leading at the top of the forth inning when John decided he had better get the boys out of the sun and get them something to eat. Adian and Aaron went over and told Richard and Robby they were going to go to eat and wished them luck. John walked with the boys back to the SUV with their equipment and loaded them up. Then headed off to Olive Garden. John knew the boys needed to eat light, so, the best thing for the boys before a big game would be pasta. John ordered for the boys, Aaron Spaghetti with Meat Sauce Mini Pasta Bowl, and Lasagna Classico for Adian then ordered a Italian Meatball Breadstick Sandwich for himself. Plus all the salad they could eat. Just as John and the boys were getting up to leave Blake, Kyle and Sammy came in. So, John and the boys went over to their table to talk to them. "Where did you guys come from?" Adian asked Kyle. "We went to watch Scott play." Sammy told the two boys. John was busy talking to Blake. "No, I meant when did you guys get here?" "Oh, Ben drove us down last night. We stayed with Ben and Sammy's Uncle, he has a nice big house, so we stayed there last night. Ben is out parking the car right now. We are going to your game next." Kyle told Aaron and Adian. "Cool, we need more fans to cheer us on." Aaron told them. "Adian, Scott said you should enter the home run derby tonight. He thinks you could win it." Sammy told Adian. "I don't know. I guess if it is ok with Blake, I might try. Adian told the boys. Just about that time Ben came in and sat down with the rest of the group. He high fived Adian as he sat down. "I hear you have been having a great tournament. Blake was telling me that you are batting a thousand, have hit six home runs four doubles and two triples. That is so awesome." Ben praised the boy. Adian's face turn red with embarrassment. "That is why we are going to come watch you play." "How did Scott's team do?" Adian asked. "They won, but they have to play at four to go to the championship game. But we want to watch you play." Ben told Aaron and Adian. The boys continued to talk until the waiter came over to take their order. Once back in the SUV John asked the boys what they wanted to do. Both Boys agreed that they would like to go back to the hotel and rest a little before going back to the park. They still had two hours before the game. Once back at the hotel they ran into Richard and Robby coming out of their room on the way down to the pool. "How did you guys do? Aaron asked. He really didn't need to ask because he could see the look of disappointment on their faces. "We lost in the sixth Inning. They came back after we changed pitchers. You were right, we did end up running out of pitchers. Tommy gave up the winning walk off hit to lose the game. He feels really sad about it." Richard told them. "So, are you guys going home tonight?" Adian asked "No, Robby and I are going to compete in the Home run derby tonight. Plus we plan to watch your guys team tonight and tomorrow before we leave. We are just going down to the pool for a quick swim before heading back to the Ball fields." Richard told them. Adian and Aaron were happy that Richard and Robby were going to stay the night. They told them they would see them later then went into their room, while Robby and Richard went to the pool. Adian laid down on his bed and Aaron on his bed. Neither boy said a word, both were out like a light. John came into check on them and smiled to himself. They look so cute in their uniforms. Just for the heck of it he got his cellphone out and took some pictures of them sleeping. just before three o'clock he went in to wake them for the game. Both boys woke refreshed and ready to go. Once in the SUV they headed over to the ball fields. There they met up with the rest of the team and began to warm their arms up. Blake came over and announced the line up, it was basically the same lineup that they ended the last game with. With Jose catching and JD Smith pitching. Adian was surprised at how big the guys were on the other team. Moorhead had just beaten the Rockville rockets two to one. Both teams had to come up through the losers bracket and if the Cougars lose this game they would have to play a second game. Blake gathered the boys and explained to the boys what would be happening. "So, lets go out and have a good time. Don't worry just go out and have fun and just do your best. Now here is the line up." Batting 1st Bryan Mars left field Batting 2nd Peter Philips first base Batting 3rd Kristopher Heinze shortstop Batting 4th Adian Parks third base Batting 5th JD Smith pitcher Batting 6th Freddy Olson center field Batting 7th Jose Livia catcher Batting 8th Eric Hooper shortstop, Batting 9th David Ramirez right field I will be putting Bobby, RJ, Eric, Sean, Carlos and Peter Corona in at the top of the forth inning. Kristopher and Adian went with Blake for the coin flip. The Moorhead Moose won the toss and chose to be the home team. It started off being a very close game. It was basically a pitchers duel. There were only three hits allowed for the first three innings. Kristopher had a single up the middle and Adian drove him home on a triple only to be stranded at third base. With the score one to nothing going into the top of the forth, Blake made his changes. The Moorhead team must have been playing their best players, because all hell broke lose. One after another the Cougars got on base. When the Game was finally called at the bottom of the fifth inning the score was eleven to nothing. Adian was the MVP of the game with three hit scoring six of the eleven points. Blake called all the boys over to him on the third base line. "Great game guys. We are in the Championship game tomorrow. I know you guys are excited but I want you to relax tonight. Go back to the hotel and rest, no swimming. Eat a good meal, watch a movie or you can stay here and watch the home run derby. We have four of your team mates that will be part of it. They could use your help cheering them on. Ok, that is all I have to say for now. Remember to relax and enjoy yourself." Blake told the boys. A few of the boys talked to Blake before leaving. John was talking to Blake while Aaron and Adian picked up the equipment and took it out to Blakes SUV and Blakes Malibu. When they came back, John and Blake met up with the two boys. "Adian why don't you go grab your equipment bag and meet me over by diamond six. I will help you warm up for the home run contest." Adian did as he was instructed. In the mean time John and Aaron got into the SUV. "We are going to visit some family and do a little shopping. But we will be back to watch you later and cheer you on." John said before driving off. Adian felt a little disappointed but realized he would get to spend time with Blake, Ben, Kyle and Sammy who had stayed to watch the derby. "Ready to go buddy." Blake asked as they walk to the batters box. "These pitches won't be thrown hard. So, you might have to adjust your swing." "Ok," Adian said as he stepped in the box. Sammy was out on the mound doing the pitching. He was actually one of the better pitchers in the group that had stayed behind. It didn't take long before Adian was hitting them over the 220 feet marker they had set up on the field. "Hey, that was great. So, do you want Sammy to pitch for you in the home run derby?" Blake asked. Adian said it would be great. While Adian was practicing Jose, Carlos and JD came over and waited next for their turn. "I don't know why they picked us, because you are going to win this." Jose told Adian. "Why do you say that, you are a good hitter. Just give it a try, it will be fun." Adian told Jose and his two other team mates. Ben and Kyle took their turns pitching for the two other boys. if they weren't pitching they were out retrieving baseballs. Blake instructed the boys on how they could drive the ball. Once they finished their practice, Blake took them over to get some food to eat. Jose and Carlos had come down with their grandmother and had been staying with some cousins in Bloomington. They met up with Blake and the boys, Blake told the boys to eat and rest. Adian joined Carlos, Jose and RJ and his father eating with the Livia family. Adian had eaten at Jose and Carlos home several times and he had never had food like this before. His favorites were the beef taco's and rice and beans, most of the other stuff he ate he had no clue what they were called. All he knew was that he really enjoyed the food. He mainly talked with Carlos and Jose. RJ and his dad sat with Blake and Carlos and Jose's mother. When they finished eating, they were told to get some rest. Blake took the boys over to sign up for the Home run derby. Adian was happy to see that he knew a few kids from the other two Wilton teams. Plus his two friends Richard and Robby and a couple of other boys from the Jack Rabbits. All the Wilton boys gathered together and talked excitedly. Most of them joking and commenting that it wasn't fair that Adian would be in the contest. The stands were full and the cheering was loud, one after another players went up to hit. several boys had over eight home runs. When Adian came to bat. He could swear the crowd quieted down. Sammy was throwing nice pitches right down the plate. At first Adian had shut the noise out behind him and just concentrated on the ball. He wasn't even sure how many balls Sammy had even thrown. "Adian, Adian, Adian" came the chants behind him. He stopped and stepped out of the batters box and looked around. The whole ballpark were watching and chanting his name. When he turned and looked at Carlos who was catching for him he asked. "How many have I hit so far?" "Enough" was all Carlos said to him. Adian stepped in and hit four more balls before he finally hit a bad pitch, it still would have been a triple in a regular game. "Ladies and Gentle man we have a new State championship home run derby record with 26 hits over 220 feet. " the man said over the PA system. People were standing and cheering as Adian went back to where his friends were sitting. Carlos also joined him. "Wow, that was so cool." Brendan said from behind Adian. "I Just got lucky. Sammy was throwing perfect pitches for me to hit." Adian told the boys who were surrounding him. "I wish my coach would have picked you for our team." One of the Other Wilton team boys said. The boys talked as JD went up to bat. Ben Johnson, Sammy's older brother pitched for him. JD started out really well, he had already surpassed the other boys with 11 home runs. But You could see he was beginning to tire after the eleventh hit. JD hit two more before fouling one off. JD was in second place with thirteen home runs. Carlos was the next to step in and hit 12 home runs. Then Robby from the Rabbit step up and hit 12 home runs to tie Carlos. Richard stepped up next and hit 11 home runs. Adian could hear his room mate Aaron cheering them on. Jose was the last of the Cougars to step in to bat. Adian cheered him on with the rest of the Wilton boys. Jose was hot, one after another went over the 220 mark. He ended up hitting 16 moving up to second place behind Adian. By the end of the contest only one other had even come close to catching up to Jose. Adian was clearly the winner of the home run derby. Jose took second, the kid who took third was on the team that the Cougars would be playing next. Adian received a very nice trophy and blue ribbon, Jose and JD both got trophies and ribbons. Aaron and the other Wilton players gathered around to admire the large trophy. Before he knew it he was mobbed by Logan, Scott, Sammy, Ben, and Kyle. He was surprised to see his uncle and foster brother they smothered him with hugs. "Good job." Logan said when they broke their hug. "We watched the whole thing. Mom and dad say they are proud of you. "Grandma and grandpa are here?" Adian asked while looking around. "Their over by Blake and John." Logan told his nephew. Adian made his way over to them and hugged them. He could see how proud they were of him. "Are you coming to my game tomorrow?" Adian asked. "Yes, we are all going to be there." Adian's grandfather said. "We wouldn't miss seeing you play for anything in the world." It was late, and it was close to nine o'clock and they were starting to turn the lights off at the park. So, Adian walked his grandparents to there truck and gave them a hug before telling them he would see them tomorrow. Back at the hotel Adian and Aaron went right up to their room and quickly undressed. They changed into their swim shorts, but John stepped into the room and stopped them from going down to the pool. "Why don't you two boys go take a shower. I will go out and grab some food. The pool is closing in ten minutes and you won't have enough time to swim. Plus you both look really hungry and tired and you will need your rest for tomorrows game." The boys knew he was right and slipped out of their swim trunks they had put on. John left the hotel room to go out and pick up some white castle. It was close to the hotel and knew the boys would enjoy a small snack before going to bed. "Lets take a shower together." Adian suggested to Aaron. He agreed and they both raced off naked to the bathroom. Aaron started the water and adjusted the temperature to the water in the shower, before both boys got in. Adian wasted no time washing Aaron's back and butt. Aaron's four and a half inches stuck out from his frame when he turned around.
