Strike Two Chapter 29

Carter was sitting behind the three young Japanese baseball players. He
could not understand what they were talking about, but he could see their
excitement when Adian pitched and they were just as excited when Adian
was up to bat. Carter was surprised that two of the boys were up on their
feet when Adian ended the game with a perfectly pitch shutout game. No
runs, no walks and no-hit shutout. Carter had not noticed it before but
both of those boys who were cheering Adian were very cute. They weren't
as built as the other boy they were sitting with; he was around five
seven and was a little on the heavy side. Carter wondered if they were
baseball players because the two smaller boys did not look like they were
old enough to be players. He would find out later that those two boys
were the main players on the Japanese team.

After Carter left for school at Penn State, He knew he would be meeting
with the Holand family. But what he didn't know is he would be providing
medical service. Carter was taking classes for Sports Physical Therapy
and his class was picked to work the Little League World Series. He
hadn't told Adian or the Holand family that he would be working there.

Carter watched as the three boys got up and headed out from the stands.
He began to wonder where they were from. Before he could think about it
any further, they met up with six other boys who were wearing Japanese
Tee-shirts. So, that answered his question as his question as to where
they were from. He watched as they met up with Adian and all the boys
started talking.

Carter watched as the two shorter boys started talking to Adian and was
surprised as Adian was talking to them in Japanese. His young friend was
amazing. Carter began to wonder how many languages Adian did speak. He
watched as all the boys gathered round him asking him questions. One of
the other boys approach the group around Adian and said something to the
other boys. The two boys that were cheering Adian on said their goodbyes
and left to catch up with their group. Adian was then left to catch up
with his Team mates.

Blake had to cut the news crews off. It seemed like everyone wanted to
talk to Adian.  Blake understood why they wanted to interview him. He
pitches a perfect game, facing twelve batters striking them out with
thirty-six pitches and went 3 for 3 with a single, triple and homerun
scoring five runs. Blake had a feeling that Adian was going to have a
great Little League World Series experience. Before he let the boys go
back to the Grove, he told them to wait for him outside the Grove. He
sent Ben with the boys to keep them away from the reporters. Of course,
they weren't able to keep the baseball players away from the other teams,
since they were all staying at the same dorms. But did that really
matter.

All the boys were talking when Blake entered the room. He moved to the
front of the room.

"Good game today. Adian you did a good job pitching. Carlos and Jose good
job catching for Adian and it was nice to see everyone getting their hits
and runs in. It was a good game. Tomorrow we don't play until 6 p.m...
So, go watch some games and eat. We will meet at 2 p.m. at field five for
some infield. Your dismissed." Blake told the boys. "Adian, hold on a
minute. I want to talk to you."

Adian hung back.

"What you need. Bro?" Adian asked

"How is the arm feeling?" Blake asks with some concern.

"Good, I stretched out really good before the game." Adian told his big
foster brother.

"Well, I want to be on the safe side and have you ice it down. This
afternoon. So, I am going to take you over to see the Physical Therapy
guys." Blake told Adian.

"Can I go change first?" Adian asked.

"Yeah, meet me at my room. Ben and I are going to get changed too." Blake
told Adian. Adian then headed out to his room. Once there he hurried to
change. it was getting close to 1:30 and he wanted to go watch the
Japanese team play. He wanted to see how good of a team they would be.
Adian left and went up to his room. Ryo and Miki were just leaving their
rooms when Adian got to his. Ryo and Miki said they would see him later
and then headed down the hallway.

Adian went inside his room and began to strip out of his clothes. It had
been a while since he had his own room.  It was then that it hit him. He
sat down on his bed and began to cry. Adian didn't know why he was
crying. Adian realized he missed his mother.

"Mom, I miss you." He cried out as he sat on his bed in his underwear.
Adian didn't know why it hit him until now. He really did miss his
mother. He had grown to love the Holand's over the last three months and
really wanted to stay with them. He wouldn't be in Williamsport if it
were not for them. He dried his eyes and began to look through his
clothes to find something to wear. He thought about taking a quick
shower, but he figured he would not have enough time. He knows he would
be able to do it later and it really didn't matter that much since he had
just started puberty. He got dressed then headed down to meet Blake and
Ben.

Ben could see that Adian's eyes were puffy from crying.

"Are you okay?" Ben asked with some concern. Blake had stepped out to
find where the medical aid station could be found. Ben stepped up to the
young pre-teen in front of him and took him in his arms. Adian began to
cry again and he felt silly crying in front of one of his coaches.

"I miss my mom." Adian said as he held on to Ben. But he did feel
comforted being held by this young and handsome young coach.

"It is okay, Adian I am sure she is watching you and she would be proud
of you today. Just remember she loved you and she will always be here in
your heart." Ben told the young boy in his arms. Adian sniffled and wipe
his eyes with his arm. Ben let Adian go and Adian smiled up at him.

"Thank you." Adian said as he gave Ben another hug. This time without
crying. The two young men heard someone begin to open the door and they
separated only to see Blake step into the room.

"Hey good to see your here. Let's go." Blake said then turned around and
led the way to the med station. Once there they met up with Carter. Adian
was excited and rushed forward to see his friend. Carter gave Adian a hug
and then had him sit down on one of the tables.

"I didn't know you were going to be working here?" Adian asked looking up
at one of his favorite baseball players from the Wilton Hornets.

"I have been here since Monday. I guess the school counts this as part of
the Physical Therapy training. Are you sore?" Carter asked as he worked
the shoulder just under the blade.

"Not really. Coach just wants me to be safe." Adian told Carter as he
moved his hands over Adian's shoulder.

"Well, we are going to loosen you up and then we will ice you down. That
way your muscles will have time to rest." Carter told Adian.

Adian didn't understand why he was getting hard. The idea of Carter
loosening him up excited him. But he knew Carter meant his shoulders,
back and arms. He thought back to a couple of weeks ago when he and Scott

good by later tonight and I will check on you later." Carter said then

Adian got to Volunteer Stadium twenty minutes before the Japan vs.
Germany game. A few minutes after Adian sat down in the stands, Aaron,
Scott, Logan and a few others joined Adian. They sat and watched as the
Japanese team took the field at the start of the game. Before the first
inning came to a close the whole Wilton Cougars were sitting in the
stands cheering on the boys from Japan. It did not go unnoticed by the
boys from Japan. It encouraged them to do their best. Germany did their
best to stay in the game, but ended up losing the game 9 to 2. The boys
from Wilton whooped and hollered as the team from Japan won the game.
Adian and the rest of the guys headed down to congratulate the team, but
they were cut off by the coaches of the Japanese boys. Adian was
disappointed but he knew he would be able to see them up in the dorms.

Once the boys headed back to the Grove, they headed in to eat. Adian was
sitting with Aaron and Eric when Ryo, Miki and Taro came in to the
cafeteria. When Ryo saw Adian he waved, Adian waved back and indicated
for Ryo to join them. Adian saw Ryo talk to Miki and Taro grab their
food. There was something said between the three boys and Ryo and Miki
looked pissed and then sat at a table a few tables away. Taro made both
Ryo and Miki sit with their backs to Adian and his two team mates.

Adian wouldn't find out till later that Taro was the captain of the team
and he was following their coach's instructions of staying away from the
American baseball teams. Adian also found out several of the Japanese
boys on the team were instructed by their parents not to interact with

told him that later he was disappointed in Ryo's team mates for thinking

("I am sorry I could not join you at your table. Miki and I wanted to.
But Taro is our team captain and the coach's son and he said we could not
sit with you.") (translated from Japanese)

"Daijōbudesu, watashi wa aruteido rikai shite imasu. Watashitachi wa
kimyōna hitobito no gurūpudesu." Adian spoke in Japanese while bowing
back in respect.

("It is okay, I kind of understand. We are a strange group of people.")
(translated from Japanese) The two boys talked about their games and had
fun playing ping pong until it was time to go.

"Oyasumi watashi no yūjin." Adian told his friend as they stood facing
each other and bowed.

("Goodnight my friend.") (translated from Japanese.

Soon after Adian went inside his room. A knock came at Ryo's door.
Outside stood Miki waiting for Ryo to answer. It was getting late and the
Captain would be making his rounds soon. Miki wanted to talk to Ryo and
was hoping he would answer soon. When the door opened Miki rushed in, he
did not notice at first but all Ryo had on was a towel.

"Were you taking a shower?" Miki asked knowing it was a stupid question
seeing that Ryo's hair was still wet.

"Yeah, I was just rinsing off when you knocked at the door. I knew it was
you because you alway seem to come when I am in the shower." Ryo said
with a laugh. Miki laughed as he closed the door.

"So, did you go see him?" Miki asked as Ryo walked over to the dresser
and began to dig through his clothes.

"Yeah, he was in the game room." Ryo told Miki as he dropped his towel.

running shoes on. So, can you wait a minute?) Ryo asked Adian.

"Hai." (Yes) Adian said as he approached Ryo's door.

Adian watched as Ryo sat on his bed and put on his running shoes. Adian
smiled as his new friend got up and joined him and they went out for
their morning run. Adian had to slow his pace so he wouldn't leave Ryo
behind. Adian actually like the young Japanese boy that was running with
him. They talked as they ran about their upcoming games. Japan was going
to be playing the Australia region Perth little league and the Midwest
region would be playing the New England Region Fairfield, Connecticut.
Adian told Ryo it could be a tough game because the team from Connecticut

looked at Adian then said in his broken English.

"I don't think you have anything to worry about your team is good. The

more than likely going to ten run rule the team like you did to the team

So, the boys spoke like that as they ran, Ryo speaking Japanese, while
Adian answered in English. This did not go unnoticed by others who were
out and about. When they got back to the Grove. Adian asked what time
Ryo's team would be playing at and Ryo told him they played at eleven.
Adian told Ryo they did not play till six p.m. The two boys agreed to
watch each other games then said good bye and went to their room.

Miki knocked on Ryo's door and once again had to wait before Ryo opened
the door. Once again Miki's timing was just perfect. Ryo had just got out
of the shower.

"Didn't you shower last night?" Miki asked looking at Ryo as he walked
across the room to his dresser. Ryo dropped his towel and turned around
after bringing the towel up to his hair to dry.

"Yeah, but I went out for a run with Adian this morning and I did not
want to get my clothes stinky." Ryo answered while showing off his half

Ryo and he didn't want to get in trouble with the Coaches and his
Captain.

I hope you had a good night's sleep.) Adian said looking at Miki.

Miki blushed and looked over at Ryo and Tamo, who happened to sit down
with Miki and Ryo when he was getting his breakfast. Tamo did not look
happy seeing Adian standing at the foot of their table.

"Maybe you should go sit with your teammates." Tamo said rudely in very
bad broken English.

"Sore wa amari yoku arimasendeshita." (It I was not very good) Adian said
knowing his wording was not very good, but he knew he got his message
across.

"Shitsurei" (Excuse me) Tamo asked as he began to stand up. One of the
Japanese coaches stood up and walked over and asked what was going on to
Ryo, Miki and Tamo.

"Sore wa watashi no seidesu. Watashi no nihongo wa jōzude wa naku, wakai
otoko wa watashi o gokai shita to omoimasu." (That's my fault. My
Japanese is not good and I think the young man misunderstood me.) Adian
commented. The coach looked at Adian and smiled.

"Anata no nihongo wa totemo jōzuda to omoimasu. Mada otokonoko to issho
ni koko ni ite, renshū shite mimasen ka." (I think your Japanese is very
good. Why don't you stay here with the boys and practice?) the coach said
as he looked at Adian and smiled once more. Tamo was not please with what
the coach had suggested and picked up his food and moved to another
table.

"I don't think he likes me." Adian said in English.

"You might be right." Miki said in Japanese. All three boys laughed and
settled in to eat their food. Adian did notice something when he was
sitting eating with Ryo and Miki. The two boys were eating fish and rice
with vegetables. While Adian was eating fresh fruit, with a waffle and
sausage. Adian picked up the sausage and put it in his mouth and both Ryo
and Miki watched as Adian first sucked on it then took a bite. Adian
wasn't trying to be sexual but it appeared to be that way to Ryo and
Miki.

The boys continued to talk through breakfast. Ryo was right Miki began to
really like Adian in more ways than he expected. He had to adjust to
himself before he got up to take his tray to the drop off area. The boys
said goodbye and went off to practice. Adian went back to his room and
changed into some of his gear before heading down to the game room. Once
there he met up with Jose and Carlos Livia and played ping pong. Adian
play with the twins until it was time to go to Lamade ballfield to watch
Ryo and Miki play.

Ryo came in to pitch at the top of the third inning. Adian was sitting
next to the Japanese cheering section. When Adian started cheering and
calling out to Ryo several of the Japanese parents turned and smiled. It
made them happy to see another boy not from their group cheering on the
Japanese team.

" Ryou ni ikou, ni ikou" (Let's go Ryo, Let's go) Adian called out. Adian
was surprised when the Japanese cheering section repeated his cheer.
Every time Adian cheered the Japanese group repeated his cheer. Ryo
pitched a perfect nine pitch inning then went on to hit a double scoring
two runs to win the game at the bottom of the sixth inning. This time
Adian was allowed to meet the boys at the end of the game.

Japan now had a two-game winning streak. They were one game ahead of
everyone else in their Brackets. After Adian congratulated Ryo, Miki and
the rest of the Japanese team. He went back to the Grove and laid down
and took a nap since he had three hours before they had practice before
the game.

Miki and Ryo looked for Adian in the cafeteria and didn't find him there.
They decided since they were there they would sit down and eat. After
eating they headed up to their rooms and changed. Adian's game didn't
start for another two hours. So, they headed down to the game room to
check things out. They found the swimming pool and the gift shop. Ryo
wondered if Adian had any tee-shirts from his home town of Wilton, or if
they had any pins that said where Adian was from. After they messed
around in the game room, they headed out to watch one of the games going
on out at Lamade stadium. The Northwest Region Gresham National Little
League was playing the West Region Petaluma National Little League team
and the West Region was leading three to nothing at the bottom of the
fifth inning. Miki and Ryo left as Oregon was at the top of the sixth
with two outs left in the inning. They were going to move over to
Volunteer stadium where Wilton Cougars would be playing Fairfield
Connecticut New England Region American little league All-stars.
