Chapter 1

I wake up and look at the clock and its 4:55. I sigh and slip out from under my little love Jack. I go to take care of my morning business and it seems like I will never stop peeing. I don't know how but Sarah Washington and Tina got together and somehow visited every family with children We have 93 students starting in the fall from the ages of 5-19. We have to get going pretty soon. I told everyone to be there around 7 so we can start with everything. We are hoping with all the help that it will be done today. We truly have a lot do do. One great thing is the people that live next to the school have offered to allow us to use their yards to grow more corn and feed for the animals. This new world is certainly better than the old one. People are so eager to step up and help. I guess that happens when people have nothing and want to help in some way. It really does benefit everyone it seems. I go and wake up the boys which isn't something I usually have to do. But they were so excited last night that it took them a while to get to sleep. They have games set up for the children and prizes. Rick and the boys brought a couple cases of soda to give out a can for a prize. They figure it is a great prize nowadays for a boy or girl to get.

"I guess I may as well get started." Mike says and heads to his tractor he drove down yesterday to plow the field under. Earl and he head over to it. People are already starting to gather and its a truly great sight seeing all the people happy and laughing. We have a group to help walk the fields to take out rocks so when Mike goes through it again to break it down better it wont damage his equipment. Also we have a crew to build the chicken coup as well as the animal pens. We certainly have plenty to eat it seems as I look at the tables loaded to almost sagging with food. Also we need someone to be able to run the clothes closet. I know a lot of you have brought older clothes that don't fit your children anymore and others will need them. So we need someone in charge of that and a few helpers as well. Also we have a bit of food in the food pantry already. I have to insist that if you need help and need something PLEASE come forward and get what you need. Please don't let pride get in your way. We don't want any hungry bellies out there in our community. We can do this together. We can make this one of the best communities to ever be. But we need to be vigilant in our efforts to make it happen. I want to thank Mr Mathews many of you know him. He has donated not one but TWO milk cows for our children. Also Mr Brown has donated two as well. So the most important needs of our children will be met so they have a good balanced diet. Also Mr Washington and his wife have donated a hundred chicks so we will have eggs and chicken for the children as well. We are going to be the greatest damn school and community ever!!" I shout the last part to a round of cheers.

I get off the little stage and I start going from table to table and makes sure everything is going well. I see no problems as people are signing up for everything. Even the school cleaning group has 25 people in it. I smile because I thought this one would not fill up very quickly. Everyone goes to where they need to go and everything runs so smoothly they are all done with the projects by one o'clock.

"We would love too." The men answer smiling.

We all walk to their house as its only about two blocks. When we get there we see the house is in kind of rough shape. Gutters are loose and one is falling off the house. The shudders are loose and one window is covered with cardboard.

"Well, this will never do." The older man says.

He heads back to the school and is back in a few minutes with a ladder and three other guys. The boys and I start in on the garden and the other guys start on much needed home repairs. We all head back to the school and the games have begun.
