I sleepily realized that he had gotten up but I slumbered on. I felt like I was riding the subway again, I could feel hot sweaty bodies pressed in on me. I couldn't stand another moment or I would smother and die amid all of these strangers who were doing their best to ignore a cocky fifteen-year-old. The doors crashed open and I chucked my way out, human spit coming from the metal beast. I had to go back, I had to find Terry! I couldn't leave him alone to whore himself under the pier. Those men didn't know him. They didn't know about the puppy he adopted half starved, or the model airplanes that sat on his bookshelves that he worked so many hours on, or the cello that he played, or the can food drive he ran four times a year in the neighborhood. They did not know about his A in English for writing about the poetry of jazz. To them he was just a young body to be fucked and thrown aside. I ran up the embankment to the southbound train. I was out of breath and I wanted to scream when I heard the echoing voice announcing that there was a delay on the line. Dear God let me get to him before it is too late! I woke up in a cold sweat. Sascha was gone. Where is he I yelled out! Sam came in. "He went to look after a new group of kittens, he said he would be right back." Sam informed me. "Kittens? I haven't seen a cat down here!" "Kittens are baby rats. He wanted to handle them so they would be used to human touch." "That boy! Where are the kit rats?" "Outside the cave, he said that if you woke up to tell you he would be right back." "Damn", I threw on my clothes and as an afterthought picked up the two books that Sash had taken from the box. I had to find him. I didn't want to panic but my dream had made me uneasy. Until we got out of the subway tunnels I would not let him leave my side. He had played a whore last night. What type of call boy would leave his lover for damn ugly rats! I was getting angry. I ran through the entrance of the underground hotel and went into the caves. I couldn't see him anywhere. Finally I yelled SASCHA....but only the silence ring of emptiness returned my call. Then, I sat down on the cold floor and I cried. I was the helpless one now that he was gone.
