Watching Noah Grow by Erastes

Chapter 11 – Another Surprise.

When I awoke Saturday morning I was a bundle of nerves, because I had no idea what to expect when I got to the park.  Other than being positive that Noah would be there, would anyone else?  Would Sam's mom change her mind and keep him from doing things with us from now on, or would she ignore whatever Gus' mother had said to her?  It seemed that I was about to find out.

As I pulled up and parked along the curb, I saw Noah sitting on 'our' bench, but as I started in his direction I saw more people converging on the same spot.  It was Sam, Gus, and their mothers, and a lump immediately formed in my throat, as my heart sank into my stomach.  Were they here to confront me and create a scene, or did they just want to talk?  I wasn't sure, but I suddenly thought that if they were here to cause a problem then they'd probably have the police here to back them up.  Since that assumption made me feel slightly better, I calmed down a little and the lump in my throat became a little smaller so I was able to swallow, but I still approached the bench with a great deal of apprehension.

"Brian, I just came over to thank you for taking Sam with you last weekend," Monica began.  "He's so excited about learning how to swim."

"Yes, he did very well for the first time, but he still has a lot more to learn."

"I'm sure he does, but he's thrilled about what he's accomplished so far.  It's all he's talked about all week and he's been pestering me to let him go with you again this Sunday.  I just wanted to make sure you were going to go to the state park again and that he's welcome to join you?"

"Yes, that's what Noah and I plan on doing, and Sam is more than welcome to join us."  Sam pumped his fist in the air and began hopping around.

"I'm sure you remember me, although we've never been formally introduced.  I'm Debbie Kocik, Gus' mother.  I just came over with Monica to eat my words and apologize for what happened the last time I was here.  I'm also going to go apologize to Noah's mother, and I want you to know that I'm giving Gus permission to join you for these weekend adventures you arrange for them."

"Thank you.  I'm glad to hear that, and I'm also glad to formally meet you.  I'm sure you know my name by now, but it's Brian Thorne."

"Yes, Monica told me, and Gus has been hounding me to let him join you and the others again, which means I've heard your name from him numerous times as well."

"Yeah, I'm glad I can do this with you guys again," Gus followed. "Will you teach me to swim too?"

"Uh, that will be up to your mom, because we do that at the state park."

"I'm willing to let him do that as well, if you'll agree to let him join you.  I've talked to Monica about this, because she questioned Sam when he got back last week.  She determined you'd done nothing wrong or inappropriate, so I'm willing to trust you with Gus as well."

"Ok, and that's good to know.  Does he have a swimsuit?"

"No, but Monica said Sam just took another pair of shorts with him to wear when swimming."

"Yes, that will work too.  Noah and I usually leave from here after our adventure, and then we stop somewhere for lunch along the way, before going to my house to change.  That's what we did when Sam was with us, so are you sure you don't have a problem if Gus does that as well?"

"Yes, I'm sure, and I'm sincerely sorry about the things I said to you before.  I'll even give Gus a few dollars so he can pay for lunch."

"That's not necessary, because it's my treat."

"That's very nice of you, but I don't mind chipping in."

"Use the money to do something for him instead.  It doesn't cost very much for me to do this once a week, and it saves time because I don't have to wait for them to go home and eat first."

"That's very nice of you, so thank you."

"So we're all good now?"

"Yes, we're fine," Monica and Debbie agreed.

The boys were hopping around because they were excited about how this was working out, and then we watched as Monica and Debbie turned and walked back to their apartments.

"I'm so glad my mom's finally lettin' me do this," Gus crowed, barely able to contain his excitement.

"Yes, and I'm shocked at her total change of attitude toward me.  I hope your dad feels the same way."  That was a reflexive comment, but I soon became sorry I'd said it.

"My dad's dead," Gus replied, as his former excitement changed into sullenness.  The smile on his face had also turned into a frown.

"I'm so sorry to hear that.  I didn't know."

"It's ok.  It happened a few years ago."

"I'm still sorry to hear that he's no longer around."

"His dad was shot in a robbery just before me and my mom moved into our apartment," Sam clarified.

"Yeah, I was glad to have Sam to hang around with then, cuz I didn't have nobody else I was close to, 'cept my mom, and she was really sad too."

"It also explains why she's so protective of you, since there's just the two of you."

"Nah, I have a younger brother too.  He's seven."

"I didn't know that either.  So your dad was shot?"

"Yeah, one night he left our apartment to go to the corner store to get more beer, and while he was there some guy with a gun tried to rob the place.  The clerk said that my dad had just paid for the beer and was tryin' to leave, but the guy said he wanted my dad's money and the beer too, but my Dad wouldn't give 'em to the guy, and that's why he shot my dad.  While the guy was busy taking my dad's wallet and the beer, the clerk was able to drop the security gate around the counter and duck out of sight so he could call the cops."

"I hope they caught the guy."

"Yeah, they did, and now he's in prison.  He'll be there 'til he dies."

"That's good.  At least he won't be able to do it to someone else."

"Yeah, I know."

"Sam, I just found out Gus has a brother, so how about you?  Do you have a brother or sister?"

"Nah, it's just me and mom."

"Ah, the same as Noah."

"Yep," Sam and Noah confirmed.

I thought it was time to change the topic and do something fun to pull Gus out of the funk he was in now.  "Hey, are you boys ready for today's adventure?"

"Yeah, and I wish I was here last week when you did the space thing and fought aliens," Gus quickly replied.

"Then you might like this adventure too.  Today our planet is being invaded by aliens from space, and we have to fight them off with whatever weapons we can get our hands on."

"Oh, yeah, that sounds like fun," Gus agreed.

"Won't they have laser guns, like they had last week?" Sam followed, looking concerned.

"Possibly, but we have to do what we can with whatever we have."

"Ok, I'm ready," Noah chimed in.  "So what are we gonna do?"

"Here's the situation.  The aliens landed their spaceship over there," I said, pointing toward an area on the other side of the park.  "I'm going to give each of you shotguns loaded with slugs, because those are the largest types of bullets we have and will do the most damage to the aliens.  I've also located a rocket launcher that I can fire from my shoulder, and I'm hoping to do enough damage to their spaceship so they can't fly off, and hopefully I'll even get it to explode so it will kill most of them."

"Ok, that sounds good, so how are we going to do this?" Sam asked.

"We're going to have to make a wide loop to get to the spaceship, so the aliens won't see us coming.  We'll go around the building with the toilets first and use it for cover, and then we'll creep along the bushes and use them to keep us hidden too.  We might also have to do some crawling, because we have to do whatever it takes to keep them from spotting us."

"Ok, we can do that," Noah agreed.

"Yeah," the other two concurred.

We spent the next two hours fighting off the aliens, but we weren't the ones who actually won the battle.  We were able to hold them off and damage their spaceship so they couldn't fly off, but it was something else that killed them.  A couple of small dogs had been roaming the park and the aliens enticed them into the spacecraft, presumably so they could kill and eat them later.  It turned out that the dogs were loaded with fleas and ticks, and the germs transmitted through the bites from those insects caused the aliens to get sick and start dying off.  We figured out what happened when we were checking some of the aliens to make sure they were dead, and that's when we noticed the fleas and ticks on their bodies, along with a large number of bite marks.  Obviously, the aliens didn't see that coming, and it's what helped us win the day.

"That was fun, but I was surprised that the fleas and ticks beat them, not us," Gus observed.

"Yeah, I thought our guns and the rockets you were firin' was what would beat them, but it was somethin' they probably didn't even see comin'," Sam added, before laughing.

"Yeah, that was pretty good," Noah agreed, "and I liked that I wasn't able to figure out what was gonna happen."

"I'm glad you all enjoyed it."

Sam and Gus left the park a few minutes later and went home to eat.  "See you tomorrow," they said as they were leaving.

"And I'm really glad I can go with you to learn how to swim," Gus added.

"Me too, and I'll see you all in the morning."

As Noah and I were making our way to the car, Noah said, "That was fun, and I'm glad Gus will be able to do stuff with us now."

"I am too, but I was totally shocked when his mother showed up and announced that she'd changed her mind."

"Yeah, I thought she was here to cause trouble."

"So did I.  Did you know Gus had a brother?"

"I heard him say that before, but I never seed him.  I think his name is Glen."

"That's more than I knew, and it came as a complete surprise."

After we got in the car, Noah said something else.  "And now I'll get to see his dick too."  And then he giggled.

"Yes, I suppose you will."

"Are you going to buy him a swimsuit too?"

"Yes, I think it's only fair, since I did that for you and Sam."

"Yeah, I think so too."

"Let's talk about lunch.  What do you think about having tuna fish sandwiches today?"

"Yeah, I like tuna fish.  Can we have tater tots too?"

"Yes, I suppose we can stop at the grocery store and pick up a bag, and I'll grab a couple of other things as well."

We pulled into the grocery store and I spent some time picking up a few things for lunch, dinner, and tomorrow's meals as well.  After I paid for everything, we headed home, and then the next thing I did was to core and peel an apple.  I'm sure you're probably confused by this, and so was Noah, but I told him he'd see why I did it later.

After I took the tray out of the toaster oven and pre-heated it.  I then placed a sheet of aluminum foil over the tray and placed enough tater tots on it for the two of us.  After putting them in the toaster oven and setting the timer, I cut the apple into quarters and gave one quarter to Noah, while I ate another.  I then diced the rest of the apple into little cubes, opened a large can of tuna, drained it, and got ready to chop the meat up before adding the mayonnaise.  I also dumped the bits of apple into the tuna too, because it added a touch of sweetness to the tuna salad.

I made both of us a sandwich just before the timer went off for the toaster oven, and then I added some of those to our plates before I got each of us a drink and grabbed the bottle of ketchup.  As Noah and I began to eat, Noah looked up and grinned.

"This is really good.  I like it with the apple in it."

"Yes, it's a little trick my mother taught me.  If you use the regular chunk light tuna, the apple takes some of the fishy taste away, but I use the solid white tuna, so it just adds a little sweetness."

"Yeah, I like it."

"I'm glad, so eat up."

After we finished lunch, Noah wanted to know what we were going to do next.  "Actually, I've got a little surprise for you.  I've been thinking about something more active we could do in place of watching movies, and I think I've come up with the perfect solution.  Follow me."

"But I like to watch movies with you too."

"I know, and we can do that after dinner, just not all day long.  Now, it's time to play with this," I stated as I held up a remote controlled car about the size of a shoe box.

"What's that for?"

"It's a car we can drive around using this remote control, which is sort of like a device you might use on a video game.  I've charged the battery already, so now we can take it outside and I'll show you how it works."

"K.  Sounds like fun."

"And seeing I live at the end of a dead-end street and there isn't very much traffic, we can practice on the driveway and then drive in the street too.  Hold this while I move my car out onto the street, so you can practice in the driveway first."

He took the RC car when I handed it to him.  "Just be careful so you don't drop it.  I don't want it to break before we have a chance to use it."

"K, I'll be careful."

As soon as I moved my car, I set the RC car on the cement driveway, took the control, and explained how it worked to Noah.  I'd already practiced with it one night during the week so I knew how to operate it, and now I demonstrated how to use it for Noah.

"Neat.  Can I try it now?"

"Of course, just take it easy and don't try to go too fast."

He drove it slowly down the driveway, backed it up, and then drove it to the end of the driveway again.  This time I had him do a U-turn with the car and then he drove it back to us, only to make another U-turn so it was facing down the driveway again.

"You did very well, so are you ready to try it in the street?"

"Yeah.  You mean I can do that too?"

"Certainly.  Just remember that if you see or hear a car then you'll need to pull the RC car onto the grass so it doesn't get run over."

"Ok, I'll 'member to do that."

For the next couple of hours I watched as he drove the RC car up and down the street.  Sometimes he went slow, while at other times he tried to see how fast it would go.  He always made sure to slow it down before turning it around, because I'd warned him that it would flip over and wreck if he tried to do it too fast.  He apparently didn't want that to happen, because then he wouldn't be able to play with it any longer.  I was getting a kick out of seeing how he glowed, smiled, giggled, and squealed with joy while playing with our new toy, but eventually the batteries began to die, so I had to tell him it was time to quit.  He looked really sad after hearing me say this, so I assured him this wouldn't be the only time we'd do this.

"Good, cuz that was fun and I can't wait to do it again."

"I'll make sure the batteries are charged before next weekend so you can play with it next Saturday too."

"Yeah, that will be good."

"Ok, let's go inside and we'll take a little breather before I start making dinner."

We then went into the living room to see what was on TV.  When we checked out what was on the Disney channel, we saw the movie 'Cars' was on, so we sat back to watch that next.  Noah laid down on the sofa and placed his head on my lap, but I knew he never came close to falling asleep, because every so often his body would shake with laughter.  When the movie ended, I asked him a question.

"What if I make baked ziti and chicken parmesan for dinner?"

"I don't know what that is."

"Ziti is like a big macaroni that I bake with spaghetti sauce and cheese.  Chicken parmesan is just a chicken patty that I cover in spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese, and then I bake it."

"Ok, I'll try it, cuz I like sketti sauce."

"I know, and I bought some Italian bread too, so you can soak up the left over sauce again, like you did when we had spaghetti the last time."

He broke into a huge grin.  "Good, cuz I like doing that too."

I left him to watch TV alone, while I went out and began to get everything ready to put in the oven.  I went back in to join him as I waited for the timer to go off, and then I told Noah it was time to eat.

"Good, cuz I'm hungry."

I put some ziti on the plate next to the chicken parmesan, and I gave him a steak knife to cut it.  "I can cut it for you if you want?"

"Nah, I can do it myself."

"Ok, but just be careful, and remember it's kind of hot."

I watched as he cut off his first piece, blew on it, and put it in his mouth.  "Hey, this is really good."

"I'm glad you like it."

He then took a forkful of ziti.  "This is good too!"

"I was pretty sure you'd like both of them."

After he finished eating what was on his plate, he buttered a couple of slices of Italian bread, folded them over, and used them to mop up the remaining spaghetti sauce.  He was so precious to watch as he cleaned off every bit of sauce on his place.

"That was really good.  Thanks for makin' it."

"I'm glad you liked it."

"Yeah, I did.  So what are we gonna do now?"

"We can watch TV again, or we can think of something else."

"Let's see if we can find another movie."

"Ok, that's fine with me."

I went to the cable guide and started scrolling through it.  "Hey, let's try this!"

I then flipped to the history channel, because they had a show about ancient Egypt and King Tut's tomb.  I was hoping Noah would find it interesting and learn something at the same time, and he didn't object or say anything when he first saw what it was.  He laid back down and got comfortable with his head on my lap as he watched the screen.

When the program ended, Noah sat up and looked at me.  "We learned about some of that stuff in school, but watchin' it was neat and I learned some new stuff too.  There sure was a lot of gold in there with the mummy."

"Yes, there sure was, and I enjoyed watching it as well, so I'll look for other shows like this in the future."

"Yeah, that would be good.  I'd like to see more stuff like that, cuz it's interestin'."

"I'm glad you think so.  Do you want to watch another show or go to take our shower?"

"Ummm, what else is on?"

"I don't know.  Let me check."

"K," he replied as I began scrolling through the cable guide again.

"There's an interesting looking show on the travel channel.  Do you want to watch that?"

"Yeah, ok."

It was a show about the ancient temples in southeast Asia, and I think Noah was surprised and impressed with what he saw.  "I never seed those places before, and they look really old."

"They are," I agreed, as we discussed what we just watched on TV and I explained about the countries where they were located.

When that show ended, we went to take our shower next, and we took turns washing each other.  This was something else Noah really liked to do, and I knew he looked forward to doing it both days on the weekend.  Once we were clean and had rinsed off, we dried our bodies, put on clean underwear, did our ablutions, and got into bed.

Before he cuddled against me, he got up on his hands and knees and bent down to give me a kiss on the lips.  He did this much longer than the last time, which had been more or less a quick peck on the lips, but this time he seemed reluctant to pull away.  When he did, he looked down, smiled, and spoke.

"I really love you, Brian, and thanks for doing all this stuff with me."

"You're welcome, little buddy, and I enjoy doing these things with you as well."

He then bent down and gave me another quick kiss before laying beside me, putting his head on my chest, and snuggling tightly against me.  A few minutes later, I could tell by his gentle breathing that he'd fallen asleep, so I let myself drift off into oblivion as well.
