Watching Noah Grow by Erastes

Chapter 14 – Another Busy Sunday.

When Noah and I woke up on Sunday morning, we got dressed and I made breakfast.  As soon as we finished eating, we headed over to the park.  After we got out of the car, we noticed that Gus and Sam were waiting for us on the bench, so we walked over to greet them, ready to get started.

"So what are we gonna do today?" Sam asked when we reached them.

"Today's adventure is based on a couple of different stories you might know, the Swiss Family Robinson and Robinson Crusoe."

"Yeah, I saw the movies about 'em," Sam concurred.

"Me too!  So we're gonna be in a shipwreck and then end up on an island?" Gus immediately followed.

"Yes, that's what will happen," I concurred.

"It sounds like fun," Noah chimed in.  "Are we gonna have to fight anyone?"

"Why don't we get started and see what happens," I suggested.  "We will board the ship first, because we're leaving our homes in England and heading to Australia."

"Ok, so are we gonna use the area with the tower for the ship, or the merry-go-round?" Noah wanted to know.

"We'll be using the tower later, when we're on the island, and seeing we won't be on the ship for very long, we'll just use the merry-go-round."

"Ok, that works," Gus agreed.

We went over to the merry-go-round and the boys all hopped on.  As soon as they were seated, I began to spin it, to show that the ship was moving.  After doing it for a couple of minutes, I made an announcement.

"It looks like we're heading into a bad storm, men, so it may get a little bumpy."  They all nodded their understanding.  "The waves are really huge and they're starting to toss the ship around like a child's toy."

After I'd said that, I jerked the merry-go-round to a stop, and then I yanked it in the other direction before suddenly pushing it forward again.  This caused the boys' bodies to lurch forward and then snap back again, and then they began to sway from side-to-side to show that the ship was rocking to and fro.  I eventually stopped the merry-go-round completely, and rather abruptly, which caused the boys' bodies to lurch forward again.

"I think we just hit something," I advised them.  "It's worse than I thought, because the captain just ordered everyone to abandon ship.  It looks like our ride is going to sink, so you'd better jump in the water before the ship drags you down to Davy Jones' locker."

The boys all jumped off the merry-go-round and we gathered together on the grass, like we were struggling in the ocean.  "Find something that floats and grab onto it, because you're going to need help to keep your heads above water.  I have no idea how long we might be in the ocean before we're rescued, or possibly make it to land, but you will tire out quickly if you try to swim or tread water the entire time.  It will be easier if you have something to hold on to, or better yet ride on, so find whatever you can."

"Are there any sharks around here?" Noah wondered while looking for something to grab onto.

"They don't want to be in the raging sea any more than we do, so I doubt we'll encounter any of them while the ocean's this rough," I explained.  It seemed to make Noah feel better, but I'd intentionally avoided mentioning that the sharks might show up again, once the storm ended and the sea began to calm down.

The boys all pretended to grab onto something and we laid on the ground for a little while longer before I spoke again.  "The storm seems to be letting up, so look around and see if you can spot another ship or land."

"What's that over there?" Gus asked, as he pointed toward the play set.

"Good job!  It looks like an island.  See if you can climb onto whatever you're using to stay afloat, and then use your hands to paddle in that direction.  It's not going to be easy, but we'll need to get there as soon as we can.  We might even be able to use these things we're holding onto once we're there, so it's good that we're utilizing them now and taking them with us."

The boys did as I asked, and we slowly made our way toward the play set.  Once we were safely there, I made an observation.  "You did well finding these things to hang onto.  I see Noah got a hold of a trunk to keep his head above water, and Gus was able to grab a barrel, while Sam latched onto a stack of lumber that had been strapped together in the ship's carpentry shop.  You boys did much better than I did, because I merely clung to part of the broken mast."

After hauling each of those items onto the shore, I gave the boys their next task.  "We have to scout the island and see if it's inhabited, but I want you to also be on the lookout for whatever is available, like fruit trees, animals we can hunt, and if there's any fresh water.  That way I'll be able to determine if we can survive here for very long.  Spread out and look around, but don't confront any of the animals or humans you might encounter.  We should be together when we do that, especially if there is anyone else on this island."

We then pretended to scout the island, and when we got together again I asked the boys what they'd found.  "There's plenty of water, cuz there's a big water hole over there," Noah offered while pointing toward the drinking fountain.

"It looks like it's fed by a spring, so I'll check it out later," I replied.  "If the water's not salty, it should give us enough drinking water for as long as we're here.  So what did you two find?"

"There's some trees with fruit on them, but the fruit doesn't look ripe yet," Sam offered.

"And there's birds and small animals we can trap for food," Gus added.

"The fruit will ripen eventually, and I'm glad there are other sources of food too, but don't forget about all the fish in the ocean," I followed.

"How can we fish if we don't got no boat or nothin' to fish with?" Sam wondered.

"We'll do something easier.  We'll dig a pit in the sand and place a v-shape wall of stones in front of it.  When the high tide rolls in, it will carry some of the fish over the wall with it, and when the tide goes out again it will leave the fish behind."

"So what's the stone wall for?" Noah asked next.

"It's to keep the fish from escaping.  The wall will make sure they don't all go back with the tide, and some will wind up in the pit, where they'll be easier to spear.  We should be able to survive here for as long as we need to, and we'll be able to use the things we floated on as well.  I investigated those items while you were scouting the island and discovered the trunk that Noah held onto had belonged to the ship's carpenter and it contains all of his personal gear.  Besides some extra clothes, there's an ax, a saw, a couple of very sharp knives, and a fairly long length of rope.  The barrel Gus was holding onto was full of dried meat, and we can use the wood that Sam was clinging to for the floor of the tree house that we'll start building shortly."

"Why a tree house?" Noah wondered.

"It's in case there are dangerous animals around that hunt at night, while we're sleeping.  It will be safer for us that way."

"So the tree house will just have a floor?" Sam followed.

"No, we'll use the wood you were holding onto for the floor, since it will give us a flat surface to lay on, but we'll cut down some trees to make the frame.  Once it's built, we'll use palm leaves to form the roof."

"Oh, ok.  That sounds good," Gus agreed.

Over the next few minutes we made like we were building our shelter, and the tower became our tree house.  I explained to the boys that we'd built it on one of the highest hills on the island so we'd be able to scan the entire area from there.  As soon as the shelter had been completed, we constructed a few traps and defensive devices in case anything threatening popped up later.  As we were doing all of this, the boys started to really get into this fantasy, so I decided to up the ante and pointed out our next challenge.

"I decided that it might be a wise precaution to scan the surrounding area, and it's a good thing I did, because I noticed several canoes coming ashore on the other side of the island.  Although it's difficult to tell very much from this distance, they don't appear to be friendly.  It looks as if a couple of the new arrivals are bound with ropes or vines, and while I was watching them I noticed there's another island in the distance.  I suspect that's where they just came from, but I'm not sure what they're doing here, especially since they seem to have brought prisoners with them.  If we're really quiet and very careful, we might be able to sneak close enough to see what they're up to."

We then walked as stealthily as we could into the park before getting on the ground and crawling to a spot a short distance away.  We then pretended to watch our uninvited guests to see what they were up to.  "Do you think they live on this side of the island?" Noah asked.

"No, we haven't seen any evidence of that.  It appears they're just using this island to perform some sort of ritual, although I'm not sure what it is."  I then explained to the boys that I'd said this because the two bound men with them were slightly different in appearance from the others.  They also wore another style of loin cloths, not that any of them had very much on.

"What are they goin' to do with them?" Gus wanted to know.

"I have a feeling they're going to sacrifice the captives in some sort of ritual."

"You mean they're gonna kill them?" Sam gasped.

"Yes.  It seems they believe in human sacrifice, so we definitely don't want them to see us."

As we watched, the natives lit a huge bonfire as the sun was setting, and then they did some sort of ritualistic dance.  Once the dance ended, they killed their captives and drank their blood.  Then, the remaining natives slept there until the following morning, when they set out for the other island again.

"Why did they do that here, and not on their island?" Sam wondered.

"Either they believed it might bring evil spirits to their island if they did the sacrifices there, or they might just think this is a safer place to perform the ritual.  It's also possible that they considered this to be a sacred island, a place where their gods live, so they make sacrifices here so their gods will know what they've done.  No matter why they did it here, I suspect they won't like the idea of us being on the island if they spot us."

"So they'll be doing this again sometime?" Gus followed.

"It's very possible, but as long as they stay on this side of the island and don't find out about us, then I don't think they'll be a problem.  We just can't let them know we're here, which means we'll have to be careful not to leave any obvious signs that we're around."

"Won't they see the tree house?" Sam pressed.

"Not unless we make noise or leave something out that definitely looks out of place.  Otherwise, I doubt they'll notice us up there."

"How about the trap for the fish?" Gus wanted to know.

"Let's just hope they don't come to this side of the island.  If they do, we'll just have to pray that they either don't notice it, or they're in the area at high tide, so it's not so obvious."

"So we can't have any fires?" Noah followed, remembering my warning from an earlier adventure.

"We'll just have to dig a pit for the fire and keep it very small, so it won't create a lot of light or smoke."

"Oh, ok," he stated, looking relieved.

A little while later we encountered a more serious and immediate problem.  I informed the boys that a ship flying the Jolly Roger had just dropped anchor off the side of the island we were on.  The crew then loaded into smaller boats and rowed ashore, probably looking for a spot to bury the treasure chest they had with them.  We were hoping they would do it quickly and then leave, but unfortunately they noticed the fish trap and our footprints in the sand while they were looking for a good spot to bury their booty.

Once they realized there might be others around, they began to roam the island looking for us.  We stayed quiet and remained in the tree house, and I thought we might have dodged a bullet when one of the scouting parties discovered the bodies of the human sacrifices on the other side of the island.  I was hoping the pirates would think there were only a few natives who showed up on the island from time to time, but they continued exploring the rest of the island to see what else they might discover.  That's when they ran into some of the traps and other devices we'd made earlier.

First, a small group of pirates fell into the large pit we'd dug, and they were impaled on the bamboo stakes we'd sharpened to a point and stuck in the ground at the bottom.  A little while later, more pirates were killed when they tried to climb the hill where our tree house was located and accidentally released the large pile of logs we'd stacked up there.  The logs began to roll down the hill and crushed even more of the pirates, so they definitely knew someone else was here.

As they got closer to our tree house, they tripped the log pendulum we'd erected, and it swung toward them.  Not all of them were able to get out of the way, and some ended up badly bruised, while others sustained broken bones.  After that happened, other pirates tripped the bamboo whips we'd erected, which had multiple bamboo spikes at the end which pierced the bodies of those unlucky enough to be in the way.  After losing so many of their crew, the rest abandoned their treasure and raced back to their boats before encountering any more traps.  It seemed those remaining decided to save themselves instead, and we watched as they rowed back to their ship.

"Too bad we don't have anywhere to spend the treasure," Gus said with a grin.

"We'll hide it for now, and then we'll take it with us if we ever get rescued."

That happened a short time later when a British naval vessel came within sight of the island and we were able to get their attention by waving a piece of the white sail back and forth.  Fortunately, it had still been attached to the section of mast that I'd clung to in the water after the ship sank, and we'd kept it in case we found a use for it later.  Looking back, it seemed as if we'd each managed to find something that had been useful to us during our time there.

"So we got saved and took the treasure back with us?" Noah wanted to know.

"Yes, we did.  Earlier, we'd split the treasure between the chest the pirates brought ashore and the carpenter's chest.  We put some clothes over the treasure so the crew wouldn't discover what we had, and once we got back to England, there was enough treasure for all of us to share.  As soon as we had our portion, we all lived very comfortable lives and often told tales to our friends and families about how we had survived the shipwreck.  Unfortunately, we learned later that not everyone onboard the ship had been quite as lucky as we were, because some of them had drowned."

Now that our adventure was over, I had to answer one final question for the boys.  "So are you gonna take me and Sam home now so we can get our stuff?" Gus asked.

"Yes, and then we'll stop to eat before heading to the state park."

That got the boys cheering as they raced over to my car, although they had to wait for me, since I chose to walk.  "Why do we need to keep bringing our shorts with us if we don't wear them?" Gus asked before getting into the car.

"It's because your moms don't know that you don't wear them, and we don't want them to find that out either, so we have to keep doing this."

"Oh, yeah," he said as he and Sam got into the backseat.

After I drove over to their apartments and they'd grabbed what they needed, they came racing back to the car.  As soon as they were buckled in, I asked what they wanted to do for lunch.

"Can we go to McDonald's or Wendy's today?" Sam wanted to know.

"I don't usually like to stop at those places, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt this one time."

After I made sure the boys were fed, I took them to the house so we could change into our swimsuits.  The boys took their time once they were naked, because they were busy checking each other out again.  They also did some grabbing and tickling, before I urged them to put on their swimsuits so we could get going.

Once they'd done that, I had each of the boys select a towel while I picked up the sunscreen, and then I herded them out to the car.  Seeing the boys had been to the state park before, I merely applied the sunscreen to each of them, and then they did the same thing to me.  While we waited for the sunscreen to absorb into our skin, we took a brief walk and chatted until we were finally ready to get in the water.

I worked with the boys one at a time, as I let them practice swimming from side to side across the back of the kiddie area.  They were all doing quite well, especially considering the short time they'd been doing this, and I was pleased and proud of each of them.

After we'd done that for a couple of hours, we got out and had a snow cone as we let our bodies air dry, and then I drove them back to my house.  After the boys had changed into their other clothes again, and Sam and Gus had wet their extra pair of shorts, I drove them home.  They thanked me as they were getting out of the car and said they'd see me the following week.  I told them I looked forward to it, but after next weekend we'd only be getting together on Saturday, because they'd be back in school.

"Will we still be able to do stuff with you after we can't go swimmin' no more?" Sam asked looking concerned.

"If your moms will allow it, we'll continue having our adventures as long as we can, and then we'll do other things afterward, instead of swimming."

"Like what will we do?" Gus wanted to know.

"I don't know, but I'll come up with different types of things we can do.  Maybe we'll take a nature walk in the woods after the leaves start to turn, or I'll take you on a trip to a cider mill so you can see how cider is made.  If your moms don't mind, maybe I can even do some other types of adventures at my house when the weather gets colder, and if there's snow I might even take you sledding.  Just remember, you'll have to get good grades if you want to keep doing these things with me."

"We will, cuz those things sound like fun," Gus agreed.

"Yeah, I'd like to do that other stuff too," Noah chimed in.

"And we'll all get good grades, cuz we don't want to be left out of doing that stuff with you," Sam offered.  "Right, guys?"  The other two nodded in agreement.

"Ok, then I look forward to spending more time with you boys."

After we dropped Gus and Sam off and we were driving away, Noah looked at me and grinned.  "I'm really glad you're gonna do all that stuff with us.  Sam and Gus was worried that you weren't gonna spend anymore time with us once school started."

"I told you I'd think of something, but we'll only be able to do it on Saturday from that point on."

"Yeah, but they thought you were just sayin' that and weren't really gonna do it, but now that you told us the other things we can do, they're startin' to believe ya."

"I'm glad to hear that, although I'm a little disappointed that they didn't believe what I said before."

"It's cuz they don't know you as good as I do."  He smiled at me and then leaned over and put his head against my right arm as I drove.

"You can help me think of other things we can do too, if there's anything special you might like to try."

"K.  How bout Gus and Sam?"

"Yes, they can offer suggestions too, but it doesn't mean I'll do everything you boys tell me.  I'll consider your ideas, but I'll be the one to determine if we'll do any of those things."

"K, as long as you do some of them."

I'm not sure if he realized he'd just given me a challenge and put a little more pressure on me, but I'd consider each of their suggestions very carefully.  I wouldn't dismiss any of them out of hand, and I'd try to give them a reason they could understand if I decided against any of their proposals.

"So what are we gonna do when we get to your house?" Noah asked, bringing me out of my personal thoughts.

"The car is charged, if you want to play with it before dinner."

"Yeah, let's do that."

When we got to the house, I parked my car on the grass so the driveway would be open for Noah to drive the RC car.  As soon as I took it out and got him started, I spent some more time just watching him play with it, grateful that I'd had the foresight to buy it for him to enjoy.

After doing this for nearly an hour, I decided it was time for me to move on to something else.  "Noah, I'm going inside to fix dinner, and then I'll stick it in the fridge until it's time to put in the oven.  After that, I'm going to change so I can take my walk."

"Do I need to change too, cuz I wanna go with ya?"

"No, you're good in the clothes you're wearing, but you might want to put on your athletic shoes, because the sandals aren't good for long walks.  There's no need to hurry, though, because it will take some time for me to get everything ready for dinner."

"K.  Can I play with the car until you're ready then?"

"Of course, just don't leave it in the street when you decide to change your footwear."

I left him and headed to my bedroom to change, and then I went out to the kitchen and began working on dinner.  Once I'd prepared each of the various dishes, I placed them in the refrigerator while we went for our walk.  When I went outside again, Noah was still playing with the car and hadn't changed his footwear.

"Noah, why aren't you ready?"

"Sorry, I meant to change my shoes, but then I forgot.  When you went into the house to fix dinner, a dog started chasin' the car and I thought it was gonna pick it up in its mouth and carry it away.  But it didn't do that, cuz the man called it back to his house and took it inside, but that's what made me forget about changin' my shoes."

"Ok, but I didn't know we had to be careful about dogs chasing the car."

"Yeah, I never seed that dog outside before, but I almost hit a cat once when it was crossin' the street.  It jumped when the car got close to it, and then it ran away."

"When did that happen?"

"I think it was last Saturday or Sunday, but I can't 'member which one."

"Oh, ok.  I was just curious, seeing you hadn't mentioned it before."

"Yeah, I forgot 'bout that too, cuz you weren't with me when it happened."

"Ok, go put on your athletic shoes and I'll put the car away for now.  I'll also pull my car into the driveway."

"K.  It won't take me long to do that."

As soon as I put the RC car in the house and moved my car off the lawn, Noah returned from changing his footwear and we set off on our walk.  Maybe I should clarify that, because I walked while Noah jogged beside me over the two mile leg of my usual nightly route.  When we finished and got back to the house, I decided on my next move.

"Let's take our shower now, since we're both all sweaty, and then you can put on the outfit you're going to wear home in the morning."

"K."

We stripped quickly and tossed the clothes we'd been wearing into the laundry room, and then we headed to the bathroom to take our shower.  Of course we washed each other again, and Noah had recently started getting an erection nearly every time I washed his genitals.  He didn't say anything when it happened and merely closed his eyes as a grin spread over his lips.  I assumed this meant he was enjoying what I was doing, so I didn't make a big deal over it either, and once we were both clean, we got out, dried off, and put on a fresh set of clothes.

"Noah, you can watch TV while I put dinner in the oven, and once that's taken care of I'll come in to join you until it's time to eat."

It only took a few minutes to take the items out of the fridge and put them in the oven, and then I went in and cuddled with Noah until the timer went off.  As soon as I heard it ding, I told him it was time to turn off the TV so we could eat.  While he was doing that, I went to the kitchen, took everything out of the oven, and fixed our plates.  When we sat down to eat, I looked at Noah and asked a question.  "What would you like to do when we're done with supper?"

"Ummm, let's see what's on TV.  I like doin' that with you."

"I enjoy being able to cuddle with you while we're doing that as well, so we'll just see what we can find on the cable guide then."

After scrolling through the listing, I discovered 'Shrek' was on, so I talked Noah into watching it.  He seemed to enjoy the movie, if his belly laughs were any indication, and once it ended he had a lot to say.

"Shrek kinda reminded me of Fezzik from 'The Princess Bride', 'cept Fezzik wasn't green."

"True, but they were both loveable giants, that's for sure."

"Yeah, and donkey was really funny too."

"Yes, he was."

"And there was a bunch of other things in there that I 'membered from the fairy tales I heard when I was younger."

"Yes, I remember seeing the Gingerbread Man, the Magic Mirror, Pinnochio and Geppetto, the Three Little Pigs, and Peter Pan."

"And the Three Blind Mice."

"I don't remember three of them, but there were a couple of blind mice."

"And the baby bear from Goldilocks, and there was a dragon too."

"You're right.  So I take it you liked the movie?"

"Yeah, it was funny."

"I'm glad you thought so, and now I'll keep an eye out for other Shrek movies."

"You mean there's more of them!"

"Yes, there are, and since you liked this one, I'll watch for when the other ones are on."

"K, that will be good."

Since we had already showered, we merely turned off the TV and I closed up the house as we headed back to the bedroom.  We then stripped to our underwear and got into bed, and Noah bent over my head to give me a kiss before laying down and cuddling against me.

"Night, Brian, and thanks for another fun weekend."

"You're welcome, champ, and I'm glad you had fun."

I then held him against my body as he fell asleep, and I dozed off a couple of minutes after he did.  We were still cuddled together when I woke up the following morning.
