Chapter 40

We have been back to work only two days and it seems like we never left.
I was at my bench when my phone rang it was Andrea. It seems that
Derrick's dad had a massive heart attack wasn't going to make it. Derrick
was already in Ct. He flown out last night. I asked what could I do, she
says "Dad, Eric and Stuart are going to stay with friends, DJ and Stephan
are coming up with her, Maria will watch Stephan during the day, and can
he stay with you and Zachary"?  I said "of course is there anything else
I can do"? She said "No, that was more than enough". I asked "who is
picking you up from the airport"? Andrea said "Derrick was, and then she
would drop him back off and bring Stephan to me". I said "Safe flight and
drive careful".

I called my boss and explained to him how I would be coming late for next
week or so. He told me put in for family leave and would approve it no
problem. I called HR and explained and they also said no problem that
even if I needed to miss entire day take it. I was approved for 400
hours. I said Thanks I appreciate it but that is more than I need. They
said. "Jared we know you won't abuse it from your past history and work
record it was what my boss approved".

At lunch I explained what was going on to Zachary. He would be coming to
work and working out on his own. Zachary asked what he could do to help.
Nothing really just help me entertain Stephan, but I don't think that
would be that hard to do. Zachary said this is going to be a lousy
Christmas for Derrick's family. I got to make a grocery list, we need
food for him.  They should be there by the time we get back from the
store. If they are early they will drop him at Mario and Maria's. Geez
good thing the house is in order. I had to laugh Zachary may end up
having to sleep in his own bed again I will leave it up to Stephan.

I made up a list for Shop Rite and BJ's and showed it to Zachary to see
if there was anything I missed or that he wanted. I figured I would drop
him off at one store and run to the other it would be faster. I explained
to the rest of guys I would be working half days for a while.  Stanley
was in charge till I came in as usual.

For a Tuesday the stores weren't that crowded, we made good time, and I
was even able to fill up my vehicle with gas. I knew Zachary's vehicle
and my truck had full tanks. Just in case Andrea needed to take a
vehicle.

We were almost through putting the groceries away, when they arrived.
Derrick Sr. was with them, he needed a break from the hospital. Maria
came over with big tray of eggplant parmigiana to take back with them. I
bought two rotisserie chickens for them to take back also. Stephan took a
liking to Maria right away and more so when he found out she was
Zachary's grandmother. By the time she left he was calling her Noni. She
also insisted that Stephan and I come over with Zachary for supper. She
wouldn't take no for an answer. Maria thought it would be a good idea for
the boy to get use to her and her house. I said Okay.

Derrick, Andrea, and DJ left. On her way out she did say thank God you
got rid of that old tree, then her and Zachary laughed. While Zachary
started laundry, I took Stephan upstairs to get him unpacked and settled
in Zachary's room. I asked him he had a choice he could either sleep here
with bear, or sleep with me and bear. Stephan said he wanted to try to
sleep in Zachary's bed with bear, I showed him where the bathroom was and
where my room was. I told him there would be a nightlight on in the
bathroom and if he wanted I would leave the candles on in the three
windows he said okay let's try that.

We all washed up for dinner and went across the street. Mario and Noni,
laughed when he told them the story about the snakes and the mask. He
even told them how I snore and Zachary has a whistle in his nose. Noni
said he had that since he became a teenager. They were also amazed at his
appetite. Zachary and he helped Maria clean up. Mario talked about how we
only have 2 and half weeks left of hunting season. We both wanted to take
Zachary on his first hunt. I told Maria I would bring Stephan over about
8 or so and I would pack him a lunch. She turned around and said "Jared
if you send this boy over with anything more than a change of clothes. I
will never let you set foot in this house again". Then she went on if he
doesn't want to eat before you leave don't worry I will make him
breakfast even let him come over in his pajamas. I thanked them again and
he shook Mario's hand and gave Maria a kiss and said thank you.

Stephan watched us get our lunches together and clothes for the gym and
work. I brought him upstairs to shower or bath, he said shower, which was
me washing the places he missed and then hosing him down. He loved that
and he liked the baby powder. I told him he could go down and watch TV or
stay with Zachary while I showered. Zachary had already showered
downstairs. He decided to help Zachary with bringing up the finished
laundry. Zachary showed him the stuff he could look at and play with in
his room. Stephan thanked him for letting him stay in his room, and
Zachary said anytime. Then I heard him say to Zachary "good luck" and
Zachary asked "for what". Stephan says "you know you have to sleep with
Poppa". Zachary says "yeah"?  Stephan continues "I feel safe in his big
arms, but he snores real badly".  I stifled my laugh as the two of them
giggled like crazy.

I walked in and asked what was going on? Zachary said nothing they were
just talking and the little one is nudging him. I say "everyone ready for
bed, lights out". I tuck Stephan in and he pulls me into a hug and tells
me good night and he loves me. I kiss him on the forehead and tell him I
love him and to yell or come in if he needs anything. Then I say you know
where my room is but I'm sure you will be able to tell by the snoring.
The little guy says "and don't forget Zachary's nose whistle" and
giggles.

Zachary and I get into bed; I am hard and put my boner under his shaved
balls. He moans quietly and I whisper "we are going to have to figure out
a game plan here". I figure the only way is maybe a quickie right after
work before he comes back from Maria's. This is December 1st before you
know it Christmas will be here. Zachary is sleeping and I quietly check
on Stephan and he is asleep. I crawl back into bed and am asleep in
minutes. The alarm goes off and I rush to turn it off Zachary gets up and
gets ready for work. I go warm up his vehicle because there is frost. He
leaves and I go back to bed. In another hour I am fully awake, the little
guy is still sleeping soundly.

I text Andrea to see if there is any news, she said Derrick's father had
passed about 4:30am, he and Mom and his siblings were at his side. She
said she was going to wait till later to text me. She asked how Stephan
was doing; I told her great in fact he didn't seem to move the entire
night. I asked if they needed anything she said they were all set. She
assumed that he would be waked Thursday, funeral Friday and they would be
back home Saturday or Sunday. I told her Zachary and I would come to the
wake, but I said I didn't know about the funeral. She said "don't worry
about the funeral; it was going to be big, because of his business
connections".

I got a text from Zachary telling me he missed me. I answered him same
here and I heard footsteps coming down the stairs. I got a big smile and
a hug and asked what he wanted for breakfast he said oatmeal, which was
good I thought okay that would be easy enough. He ate I got his clothes
ready asked if he wanted to take bear with him, he said "no, bear doesn't
usually like to leave the house". I got dressed and got him ready to go
across the street. Maria had a big day planned for them. They were going
to do some decorating and he was going to help with putting together her
village. I told her he will be here till the weekend and if she had plans
or an appointment not to worry that I will take off from work. She said
okay. I left and felt a little guilty.

I had a good workout and to tell you the truth working a 4 hour day is
nice. We got home and had a quickie on the kitchen floor. Not long enough
to our liking but we both got off. Zachary went to clean up and I started
dinner for Stephan and me. I walked over with Zachary to get him. Maria
wanted us to stay I had said remember that was the agreement that Zachary
would have supper with you and I should spend some time alone with
Stephan. Maria agreed.

Stephan told me about his day and how Maria and Mario were nice. She
showed him Zachary's room and he took a nap there. He told me there were
pictures of me with Zachary when he was young. I told him how Zachary
came to live here when he was his age. We had just finished eating when
Zachary came back; Stephan told him that he slept in his other bed.
Zachary thanked him for helping Noni with the village and other
decorations. Stephan said it was fun and that they were going shopping
tomorrow and he reminded me they needed a car seat. I said okay I would
get it out. Zachary says you have a car seat, I said I have two; they
were in tubs downstairs from when DJ and Eric were small. While Zachary
got our clothes and lunches together, I went down and got the car seat.
Then he helped Zachary decorate the two mantels. I found the lights we
had bought last year.

I noticed that these two were forming a good bond. Whenever I came back
into the room Stephan and him were giggling and looked like they were up
to no good. I would just stare at him and he would come over and hug and
I would ask "what did you do now"? He would giggle and tell me. Seems
that he got up to pee during the night and he wasn't scared because of
the light from the candles in the windows and the other night lights but
he told Zachary he could hear his nose whistling, but didn't hear me
snoring. So he came into the room and saw I was there sleeping. I laughed
and said "I told you I don't snore". "We will see what happens tonight"
he answered.

The next day was uneventful; Stephan went shopping with Maria and Mario.
They got their fish for Christmas Eve; I had them get me shrimp. Then
they went to the mall and finished all their shopping in one day. Geez I
have only done a little and that was on-line. They were going to have him
sit on Santa's lap, but the line was long and Stephan was getting tired.
When she put him down for his nap she said think what you want and she
would write the list for him and mail it.

When he got up he did Maria had him sign it and put it an envelope and
gave to him to give to me to mail. I opened and read it and put it away
to give to Andrea later. Friday was the wake, Zachary and I went right
after work. Poor DJ looked terrible, it was his first taste of death, he
hugged me hard and I knew what he was thinking. I whispered in his ear, I
am fine I am not planning on going anywhere for a long time. He seemed
relieved. I explained to my daughter and son-in-law about the funeral,
and how I couldn't leave Stephan again with Maria. I really haven't spent
that much time with him. They had said they were flying out for 10am
Sunday morning. I told them I would bring Stephan to them, by 7:30am.
Derrick's parents lived in Greenwich they weren't that far from White
Plains. They balked and I insisted and that was final and I gave them the
letter to Santa.

Stephan made cookies with Maria all day. She sent him home with a plate
and told him she would send him some in the mail if she has time. They
made sugar cookies and gingerbread men and he helped decorate them. We
ate then I had him help me put the lights on the tree and told him he
could help Zachary decorate it later on.

Saturday I got up early and started breakfast. I went to bed and left the
two of them to finish the tree. They actually did a good job and while
the coffee was perking I put the bins away. I made bacon and pancake
batter and took out eggs, I figured one big blow out on his last day.

I decided I was going to run to Lowes or BJ's and get Maria a big
poinsettia plant from Stephan before they even woke up. I woke up when
Zachary came to bed it was about 9:30. He said Stephan fell asleep on the
couch and he brought him up and put him to bed when he finished the tree.
I knew I would be back before either one stirred. I got three nice full
plants one for her and two for over here.

I went up to check on my boys. Zachary was still out and Stephan was
laying there awake. I sat on the bed and said good morning. He smiled up
and me and took my hand. I asked if he was ready to get up, he nodded. I
asked if he was having a good time here with me and he said "yes" I told
him I was happy he was I said come down and have breakfast with me. He
looked in on Zachary and said to me shhsh, you hear his whistle. I nodded
and he giggled and scampered down the stairs.

It was good just the two of us no rushing we had the whole day. I told
him while we were eating that he was going home tomorrow. He goes I know,
but I have been here longer than anyone and I said that is true and he
can still come back when he is old enough to fly on his own if he wants.
I asked him what he wants to do today anything special. Believe it or not
he wants to go for pizza. I asked anything else he says just to be with
me. These kids can break your heart.

Zachary came down when we almost finished. Stephan looked at him and said
"you think you slept enough breakfast is almost over". Zachary says "I
was tired". Stephan just rolled his eyes and goes "DJ and my Dad say the
same thing". I told them they did a good job on the tree and maybe do the
tree upstairs later on. I told Zachary we were going for pizza for
dinner. I figured somewhere local not New Haven. I also said after
breakfast to take Stephan and to bring the plant and card over to Noni.
We sat and had a good breakfast together and talked about Christmas. I
told him if everything went good we were coming down for a couple of days
after Christmas he was excited when he heard that.

After breakfast he went up to wash and brush his teeth and get dressed I
went up to make the beds and get his dirty clothes. He helped get his
things together so I we would have to do is pack any last minute stuff.
When we were finished he says to me "Poppa can I sleep with you tonight"?
I tell him "of course if he wants to". He says "thanks". We go down they
go across the street to see the grandparents and say goodbye. They came
back an hour later with more cookies. Stephan whispered to me that Noni
cried a little and hugged him and so did Mario and they want him to come
back soon.

The rest of the day flew by we went out to dinner early and he enjoyed
the pizza. I took him up for his shower early and put him in his pajamas.
Zachary and he played a game on Xbox while I washed the last of his
clothes and some of ours and then we watched Charlie Brown's Christmas; I
told them that was when I was a kid. Stephan thought that was funny. He
didn't nap that much today so I put him in my bed for 8pm, I was going to
have to wake him up by 6:30am. I finished his clothes and got them all
packed and put bear in with them. He was all set the only thing dirty
would be his pajamas.

Zachary and I sat on the couch making out. I got the bright idea we could
suck each other off if we were quiet. Which we did and then we took
separate showers why push our luck. I made out a shopping list, he would
have to do it seeing I would be on the road with Stephan, if he got up
when I left he would be done by the time I got back from Greenwich and we
could go out for breakfast. He agreed that was a good idea. I locked up
and turned everything off and we went upstairs and kissed goodnight at
his bedroom door. He invited me in and I said don't tempt me.

I got into bed and took Stephan in my arms and held him. He mumbled
g'night Poppa. I kissed the top of his head. The alarm went off at 6:15
he stirred but didn't wake I got up and washed, brushed my teeth and got
dressed. I cuddled him and said let's go big guy. He got right up and
peed brushed his teeth washed his hands and I washed his face with a wash
cloth and helped him get dressed. I told him to go wake up Zachary tell
him it was 6:30. He jumped on him and woke him. Zachary gave him a big
hug and kissed him on his forehead and told him he would miss him. I
closed his suitcase and went out to warm up both vehicles. I gave Stephan
a protein bar and a bottle of water and one I put his orange juice, I
yelled up to Zachary that I left the money on the island and with the
list and he came right down and hugged Stephan again. I got him in his
car seat and we were off.

We were in Greenwich and at the in-laws by 7:20 we made good time. They
were packing up the rental. Derrick's mother and brother were still
sleeping. I hugged everyone and told them to text when they landed and we
would facetime later tonight. I told the boys I will see you in a few
weeks.

By the time I got home my stomach was growling. Zachary was just
finishing up putting everything away when I walked in, he stopped at DD
and got me a coffee and put in a mug for me. I drank it and we went right
out for breakfast.

It felt good to be out the two of us both had egg white veggie omelets.
We came home got our clothes ready for the next day. I was deciding on
what to make myself for dinner, Zachary had to go to his grandparents for
Sunday dinner at 12:30. I got at 11am they had landed were on their way
home. I made the beds and straightened up, everything was done. I decided
to go for a run. I was lonely I really missed having Stephan around. I
felt better after the run and Zachary was back by then I went to jump in
the shower and he joined me and I fucked him good, it was what we both
needed.

We got our lunches together. I made a Christmas list of what I needed to
buy I was going to have to start soon and it wasn't as bad as I figured.
I was going to take a day off from work or leave early to do it. I
ordered what I had to right then and there. About 7pm we facetimed with
Andrea and Stephan the other boys were getting ready for bed. Andrea was
happy to be home, Stephan wasn't. He missed Zachary and me; he wanted to
know how come we couldn't live closer. I told him everyone had jobs and
in a few years he would be old enough to fly and he could spend the whole
summer vacation with me. That seemed to appease him for a while. We
talked a little more than hung up.

We were in bed early and Zachary was kind of quiet, I said to him,
"what's up"? He just said "I miss him even though it was only 5 days", I
held him and said "I felt the same way". Then I said "by tomorrow we will
be back in our groove and void will be filled". We kissed and fell
asleep.
