I hope everyone is having a great summer. I have had a chance to vacation
with a couple of fans. I never thought when I started this journey that I
would have the chance of meeting such great wonderful people. To all the
loyal fans a big thanks.

Chapter 82

August 3, 2022 my last day of work till next Tuesday. On the way home we
stopped at BJ's to get milk and few things I will need in the next few
days with Stephen here. I grabbed two rotisserie chickens I hated to I
didn't have time to cook tonight. Zachary, Anthony and I have gotten
drafted to play bocce for the IA club by the members. It seems that seven
of the guys are either injured or on vacation. Poor Zachary is being
thrown in with the wolves tonight he is going to be the youngest player
at 19. Stephen isn't going to be happy but will be given the choice of
staying with his family, Maria, or coming with us. This is usually a guy
thing and no women usually come. Tonight we are playing at the club so it
will be easy to watch him if he comes.


Anthony was coming for dinner and when we got home DJ was swimming with
Stephen and he decided to stay for supper. Supper was baked sweet
potatoes, chicken and a salad. I asked 'Do you Stephen and DJ want to
come watch us play?' Stephen says 'Yes.' DJ says 'No.' Then I ask 'DJ do
you want to sleep over with your brother tonight?' He answers 'Not
tonight but I will Thursday and Friday night.' Stephen looks at him with
awe and says 'Really?' DJ says 'I told you I would and I may be too tired
or sore once I start practice.' I looked at DJ and let him know I was
proud of what he just did. DJ says 'Papa those two mornings you can go
work out with Zachary if you want you will be back before we are even get
up.' I said 'Thanks I may just do that.'


While we are eating Anthony says 'I'm surprised they even want us as
members if they remember what we were like as kids.' I laughed and said
'Poor Dad but we never were really banned and he used to laugh about it.'
DJ says 'What did you guys do? You couldn't have been together?' I
laughed 'We weren't but your grandfather was either vice-president or
treasurer for most of the time.' I was maybe 3-5 years old when I use to
go and there was this big room with a bar and I use to run and slide up
and down on the varnished hardwood floor I had never seen such a big
empty space like that. Plus I was usually given a coke that I'm sure
didn't help. Then another time they always had a piano and I use to play
it till they locked it shut. Then the stool when you spun it, it went
pretty fast but on the claw legs were glass balls like marbles that were
the rollers. I snuck behind the bar where there was a tool box and with
a screwdriver and pliers I was going to take them off. The guys were
having their meeting and going over stuff and someone must have noticed
it was quiet other than the TV, no one running around or banging on the
piano. I had managed to flip the stool over and was trying to get those
glass marbles loose. This big guy who was the bartender yelled 'Little J
what are you doing?' My Dad and the other guys turned around and laughed
and my Dad says 'Jared put the tools back they don't come off.' The next
time there was a small fan on top of the piano and it was hot in there
and I wanted it on so I climbed up on the stool to get the plug to plug
it in and as I was reaching the stool rolled and I was hanging off the
top of the piano. The bartender whose name I found out then was Butch an
ex-marine ran over and rescued me before I fell. I was infatuated with
that fan it weighed a ton and Butch gave it to me to take home. Zachary
says 'Is that the fan on your bureau?' I nodded. Anthony says 'You still
have it and it works? I remember you had it in our room' I said 'It still
works like a top. That was my room that you decided to share.' Anthony
laughed.


Anthony says 'When I went I was no better I flooded behind the bar.' The
boys looked confused. Behind the bar they have wooden skids on the floor
so you wouldn't slip on the smooth floors as they got wet so some of them
seemed to be floating which they weren't it was just they were uneven.
There used to be floating docks at the lakes or beaches that you could
swim out to when we were kids. So I figured these would float too if
there was enough water. I took the hose out of the sink to fill the
floor. I had to be four or five myself. I use to count the squares tiles
in the floor after they got rid of that beautiful hardwood floor. Running
and counting out loud. Then at Christmas I use to make the Christmas
lights blink on and off by pulling out the plug and putting it back in.
It drove those guys crazy. Then if I got real bored if you took a piece
of old tinsel and put it in a light socket it would blow the circuit
breaker.' Zachary asked 'Old tinsel?' Anthony says 'When we were kids
there used to be lead tinsel then they said that was a hazard and made it
out of aluminum not like today that it is plastic.' I said 'That stuff
was great it hung straight.' Anthony said 'Then when I was a baby they
use to have a skating rink in the back and our Dad liked to ice skate and
he took Michael and me I was in a carriage that that had runners so it
basically was sled. Michael was to watch me while he skated. I guess
Michael got bored and decided to try to get the sled/carriage out onto
the ice to push it around, well the outer edge of the rink wasn't solid
and we sunk and I got wet, the blanket I was wrapped in got wet. I guess
Michael didn't care and still tried to get us on the ice even he was
wet.' I said 'Dad was pissed you guys weren't even there twenty minutes
when that happened. But it didn't seem to bother Michael.' Anthony says
'I don't ever remember being with him after that or ever going ice
skating there. That was probably his plan.' The three others were
laughing. DJ says 'You guys had a great time growing up, didn't you?'
Anthony says 'I think you and my sons are having a great time too.' DJ
says 'We have had a lot of fun.'


DJ asks 'How come you are not taking Ian, Eric, and Stuart to play they
are pretty good?' I say 'You have to be at least eighteen or believe me
they would be.' I say 'You can come if you want.' DJ says 'That's okay
Papa the Red Sox are on tonight.' Anthony whispers to me 'Smooth answer.'


We got ready and DJ told me he would finish cleaning up and lock up. We
left after Anthony talked to his boys. Mario was already there and he
took Stephen to get him settled on the sidelines with the score keeper
along with a bottle of water. Some of the old timers were there to play
and to cheer. We got settled on teams which were two teams of four for
each side. It was Mario, Anthony, Zachary and myself plus four veterans
that were up against the rival club. After a pretty rocky start we found
our groove and won three out of five matches. Afterwards we went in for
drinks to celebrate. Stephen and Zachary got a kick out of the old photos
on the walls. Some of the older guys teased Anthony that there wasn't a
tree up for him to short out. They talked about our Dad and showed
Stephen more photos of my Dad and me that were hanging behind the bar.
Butch the bartender was still there and was introduced to Stephen and
Zachary. Butch for an eighty year old man was still in great shape with
big arms still wearing a-shirts, shorts and flip-flops. Stephen asked
'Are you the man that helped Papa when he was hanging on the piano.'
Butch laughed 'I am indeed your Papa and your Uncle had a thing for
plugging things in.' Stephen says 'I like your tattoo and Papa still has
that fan on his bureau and it still works.' Butch was amazed and said 'I
don't believe it you do?' I answered 'Yes it is the best fan I have ever
owned.' Then Butch told Stephen about his tattoo. We were going to be
playing for the next four weeks the three guys we were replacing had
Lyme disease that they caught mushrooming. Another not only has Lyme but
West Nile from a mosquito bite.

It was near 8:30 when Anthony dropped us off I checked the grill to make
sure it was off, Stephen checked to see if the garden needed watering and
Zachary went in to shower. He still had two days of work. I made his
lunch and his oatmeal for breakfast. I was packing his gym bag when he
came down. Zachary looked at Stephen on the couch and pushed me toward
the back door to hold me and kiss me. We were both getting hard and he
giggled. He says 'Thank you for getting all my stuff ready. I'm going to
bed I'm beat it has been a good day and night.'


I say 'Stephen let's go get your shower over with.' Zachary came up with
us and said 'Goodnight' and went into his/Stephen's room. Stephen was
filthy and I made him wash twice and scrub his hair. While he rinsing off
I went down and got his warm towel he dried off and went into his room to
get his pajamas. As I was straightening out the bathroom I heard him say
'Zachary look it glows.' Zachary answers 'Holy cow it does glow real
bright just like a night light.' Then they giggle and Stephen says 'See
you tomorrow after work, love you.' Zachary says 'You have a good day
with Jared tomorrow, love you too.'


Stephen was still kind of wired from the soda and I asked bed or TV he
opted for TV and went down I followed told him everything was locked and
he said 'I'm fine, Zachary and you are only upstairs.' I took a good long
shower myself I was dusty from the bocce pit. When I got out I snuck
quietly downstairs and Stephen was starting to nod off on the couch I
went quietly upstairs and got on Zachary's bed. Zachary stirred and said
'I was wondering if you were coming back in to say goodnight.' We kissed
and I said 'If DJ stays the next two nights I may go workout with you in
the morning.' Zachary says 'I would like that.' I kissed him a few more
times and left to get dressed and to go downstairs.

I checked that everything was locked up and turned off everything and
Stephen woke up I carried him up and told him to pee and get in bed.
Stephen climbed into bed and whispered 'Papa I had a lot of fun tonight.
I love you.' That was it he was out, I would have visited Zachary but he
had work tomorrow! I didn't fall right asleep I was kind of wound up
myself but eventually I did.


I heard Zachary's alarm go off and I eased out of bed and went down to
get his things ready. He came down and I helped him out with his stuff
and told him to text me when he got there. He agreed without giving me a
hard time. It was partly a parent and boyfriend concern thing. I went in
locked up and went back to bed. Twelve minutes later I got the text he
was at the end of row 22. I chuckled and texted back 'You are going to
really haul ass if you don't want to get stuck in traffic.'

I slept till about six then went downstairs and got on the treadmill. I
ran for almost fifty minutes then lifted a little and went up to shower.
I went into my bedroom to get clothes and Stephen was still sleeping. I
got dressed and went down to make coffee and oatmeal. I figured the next
few days there would be big breakfasts with DJ being here also. After I
had my first cup and the oatmeal was finished I went upstairs and Stephen
was awake lying there. I rubbed his head and back and asked 'Did you have
good sleep.' He smiled and nodded. I told him breakfast was ready and to
get up when he wants. I wasn't going to push it he was up past nine last
night and it as almost nine now. I left him and went back downstairs and
texted Zachary. I asked 'How is work? I miss you and Stephen is awake but
still in bed. I love you!!' Zachary texted 'Kind of busy which is good.
Miss you and love you more!! Geez the kid must really be tired.'

All of sudden I heard the toilet flush and the sink and Stephen
thundering down the stairs. He came down all smiles and I asked 'Ready
for breakfast?' Stephen answered 'I'm hungry.' I answered 'Good I'm
hungry myself I was waiting for you.'


AS we ate we talked about the bocce game. Stephen wasn't sure what he
liked more the club, the guys or the game. I asked 'Are you going to
Maria's for lunch?' He answered 'No not till next week I told her I was
spending the whole days with you. That I would be going to school soon so
this was going to be maybe the last time I could do this.' I said 'You
will see you will have days to spend with her and me.' He says 'Papa I
know that but it is not like every day I'm going to be home just on days
off.' I laughed and said 'You will see there will be a lot of those and
it is not that you can't come for supper after all you will be getting
home the same time I am.' Stephen says 'Yeah I guess so.' I then started
to tread into dangerous waters and asked 'Are you at least getting
excited about school?' Stephen didn't answer right away then says 'Yeah I
guess so I got new clothes and shoes and sneakers. DJ says 'It will be
fun it is not like you will have homework.'


I then asked 'How did the clothes shopping go the other day?' Stephen
laughed 'Papa DJ and Mom argued a little about clothes but then she let
him get all his clothes at A&F. She wasn't happy about the girls in there
and how they were talking to him. She told him on the way home that she
is too young to become a grandmother whatever that means.' I asked 'What
did DJ answer?' Stephen says 'He laughed and told her don't worry Papa
already talked to me. Mom then says maybe he should give you a refined
talk.' I laughed and said 'Do you mean a refresher talk?' Stephen laughed
'Yeah that is it.'


The weather was supposed to be in the mid-nineties the rest of the week
which was good pool weather. I told him to go get his bathing suit on
after he washed and brushed his teeth. I made the beds and straightened
up while he got ready. We weeded and watered a little and picked seven
tomatoes enough for a tomato salad. While we were tending the garden I
told him what I planned for supper for the next four nights and if he had
any objections. The only thing he asked about was pizza and I told him I
was planning on pizza for him and his brothers when they came back from
Wildwood and before they started school. He said that would be fine.

I ask 'Should we go over to Mario's and weed his garden after all it is
your job.' Stephen says 'Yeah let's go now I usually do it while he is at
the club before lunch.' I locked up and we walked across the street we
were both shirtless and in shorts and sneakers. We were half way through
the garden when Eric and Stuart walked through the yard. They were
surprised to see me. I laughed and asked 'Where do you think Stephen was
and they both answered 'Over here Mom has already left for work.' I asked
'Where are you going?' I already knew the answer. Eric says 'We are going
over to play bocce and Dungeons and Dragons with our cousins.' Maria came
out and asked all of us 'Do you have sunscreen on?' We all answered
'Yes.'

The two older boys left and Maria asks 'Stephen did you enjoy going to
the club yesterday?' Stephen answers 'I did I got to watch Papa, Zachary,
Uncle Anthony and Mario play bocce I saw a lot of photos of Papa with his
Dad.' Maria says 'Why don't you two come for lunch I making a huge egg
and squash frittata and some stuffed squash. Please we won't eat it all
plus I took some sugar cookies out of freezer. I know Mario will be happy
to have company for lunch.' Stephen answered for the both of us 'Yes I
like egg and squash. I said 'Ok after we finish but let us go home and
get cleaned up.' Maria says 'Mario isn't due for another thirty minutes
or so.' Stephen and I finished weeding and actually picked more squash
and cucumbers for them. We went home to clean up and put shirts on.
Actually we had time to take fast showers.


Both dressed in shorts, tanks, and sliders we headed across the street
for lunch. I brought a bottle of wine to drink with lunch. Mario was just
getting home from the club. It was a good lunch we never opened the wine
but I insisted he keep it and I explained later to Stephen you never go
anywhere empty handed. Mario asked 'Stephen did you have a good time last
night?' Stephen answered 'It was neat but I don't like staying up that
late I was tired this morning.' Mario then asked 'Are you ready for
school?' Maria and I looked at one another and Stephen answered 'I guess
so. DJ and Zachary keep telling me it will be okay but I don't know I
will miss being here for lunch and seeing you guys every day.' Mario says
'Stephen, Maria and I will miss you but you will be surprised at how many
days you get off and I'm sure Maria will wait till you get home to make
cookies with you.' Stephen says 'Mario that is almost the same thing Papa
told me, so I guess so.'

We ate and went back home so Stephen could nap and I could marinate
chicken thighs and legs for supper tonight. Stephen decided to sleep
his/Zachary's room and I napped on the couch for a short time. I woke up
with DJ knocking and coming in the back door. He had a backpack with him
and after he put it down we went back out he was dressed to go swimming
it was 96 out and I decided to go in the pool too. I went up to change
and grab some towels. Stephen was half awake and I told him I was outside
with DJ and to come out whenever he was ready.

While I had DJ alone I told him to make sure the other two boys didn't
tell Stephen any horror stories about starting school. I continued I
think he is starting to get a little leery about going. DJ assured me
they wouldn't his Mom and Dad already straightened Eric and Stuart out.
Playing stupid I asked 'How was the clothes shopping the other day?' DJ
looked at suspiciously and says 'Papa you already know.' I smiled and put
my head down and said 'Yeah I do but I wanted to hear your side of it.'
DJ laughed 'I guess Mom wants you to give me the sex talk again but you
don't have to worry I am trying to learn self-control. Papa I already
have a kid I don't want another one that will be younger.' I laughed and
said 'Does that mean instead of squeezing one out five times a day it's
only four.' DJ says 'Ewww Papa but no my record is six and I'm trying to
keep it at four a day if I can even get a chance for that.' I laughed and
said 'Your Uncle Anthony kept me from being stupid and I had to deal with
diapers.' DJ says ' I guess that would be a mood killer.' With that the
Stephen came out with the sunscreen and a towel and got in the pool.


Stephen told DJ what he did all day and he wanted to know what his
brother did. DJ told him how he talked to one of his friends and all the
guys playing football may get together Saturday night. Stephen asks 'Will
there be girls there too?' DJ says 'Probably.' Stephen whispers and I
pretend not to hear 'Did you get that refiner talk from Papa.' DJ looks
at Stephen confused and goes 'Huh what?' Stephen says 'You know what Mom
told you that other day.' DJ caught on and says 'Yeah Papa just did.'
Stephen says 'Okay than you will be fine right?' DJ says 'Yeah I'm good.'
They both look at me and I say 'What.' Stephen and DJ say 'Nothing.' They
both smile for different reasons.

I ask them 'What do you want for sides with the chicken?' They say 'Corn
and a salad.' I got out and texted Zachary to stop for 6-8 ears of corn
on his way home. I got out of the pool and let them swim and talk. It
would be too hot to eat outside I got the pot ready for the corn there
would be no cooking inside tonight except for Zachary's oatmeal. Speaking
of which I heard him outside and the boys telling him to come swimming.
He came in and we kissed hard I was so horny I said 'We have to find a
way of getting together.' Zachary just nodded I knew by the dilation of
his eyes he was just as horny. I told him to get changed I would take
care of everything. He came back down with work clothes I laughed and he
said 'No I don't trust you it is not winter.' I asked if he wanted
oatmeal and said 'Yes please.' He went out and got in the pool and I
started his oatmeal. I could hear the three of them laughing and playing.
When I finished the oatmeal I went out to shuck the corn just in time to
catch Stephen peeing off the side of the deck then washing it down. I
didn't say a word and Zachary and DJ were talking about football.


Stephen cleans a thigh and leg like I do I guess some things are
inherited. I ask 'What are we watching tonight?' DJ says 'You still have
to watch Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp.' Zachary asks 'You watched all
of Lucy?' and both boys nodded. Stephen says 'How about Papa's home
movies?' DJ says 'No I have watched them four times in the past week with
you along with Lucy. Hey if you want to watch them again do it when I'm
not sleeping here.' Stephen says 'Okay I can wait till Sunday you are
sleeping here till then right?' DJ answers 'Definitely tonight and
tomorrow I don't know about Saturday yet.' I say 'Who wants dessert?' No
one wants anything yet. DJ says 'Papa can you make popcorn for when we
watch the movies?' I say 'You won't believe it but I just bought a jar
whne I went shopping.' We clean up and it looks like the weather tomorrow
is going to be the best out of the next few days. I tell them that
tomorrow we are going to Quassy and does DJ want ot come. I'm surprised
he says yes and then I thought I would ask Eric and Stuart if they want
to come. I called my daughter to tell her to ask them. They also said
'Yes' Zachary whispered 'Geez I hope the older ones don't get bored.' I
told them to be ready for 10:30, the park opens for eleven. I laughed 'We
will see.'


Stephen went up to take his shower first. I went up with him and washed
his hair and made sure he rinsed good. DJ came up next and Stephen called
him in the bedroom and I saw the light go off and I heard Stephen exclaim
'Yes!!' DJ came out and just looked at me and shook his head. I told him
'You created this.' DJ laughed and said 'A Frankenstein.' DJ showered and
came down in shorty pajamas too. The popcorn machine was just finishing
the popcorn. Zachary was going to shower next and before he went up DJ
told him to wait and says 'Papa you got a queen size bed why should
Zachary give up his bed he has to go to work tomorrow with Stephen in the
middle we all should fit.' I said 'But I plan on going to work out with
him in the morning.' DJ says 'Papa believe me you won't wake Stephen or I
up.' Zachary says 'Geez that is really nice of you are you sure? He
snores.' DJ says 'I know but I can handle it.' I looked at both and said
'Hell-o I'm right here.' They both laughed.

I went up to shower next and got a little kissing session in with
Zachary. I yelled down 'Don't wait for me you can start the movies.' I
took a nice long shower and I squeezed a much needed one out I'm sure
just like the two previous guys.' They were watching Peter Pan when I got
back downstairs. Zachary didn't make it till the end of the movie he went
up to bed. I followed not long after stopped for a goodnight kiss and
went to bed myself. The other two came up after the movie and watching
something else. They went in and brushed their teeth Stephen stayed
behind and went to the bathroom. I was partially awake and was listening
to the two talk. Stephen got into bed between us and I heard DJ whisper
'Your hands are wet you have to dry them better after you wash.' Stephen
says 'I forgot to wash.' DJ says 'If oyu are going to try to fool someone
you can't let me hear the sink I know you washed them.' Stephen laughed
and said 'Ok.' I scared the both of them when I said 'Is everything off
downstairs.' They both answered 'Yes Papa.' Stephen says 'DJ this is a
good idea I like the three of us sleeping together.' DJ just went
'Hmmph.' He was already falling asleep. We all slept on our right side
and spooned and there still was room for another person. I had lowered
the temp even lower than normal and wondered if Zachary was cold.

I heard Zachary's alarm go off at 3:20 and I got dressed grabbed our gym
bags, packed his lunch and as soon as he came down we were out the door.
There are no more than six guys at the gym and that is as we are
finishing up. We showered got dressed we snuck a kiss and he went to our
department and I went home. I threw the gym stuff in the wash and decided
on oatmeal and English muffins again seeing we were going to Quassy. The
next three days I will make big breakfasts. I went out to look at the
garden and waited for the boys to get up. I figured if they weren't up by
nine I would get them up.

I had my coffee outside it was going to be another warm day. I was
texting Zachary when I heard my name being called it was Stephen he came
out and sat on my lap and told me DJ was still asleep and he was hungry.
We went in and ate and he told me it was the best sleepover ever he had
me and DJ protecting him. After he ate he was going to go check the
garden and I told him it was done for him to go up and brush his teeth
and get dressed. He whined and asked for help and I went up with him. I
made Zachary's bed and laid out clothes for him to wear. I swear I think
the kid packed enough for a month. I heard DJ get up as I was going
through Stephen's clothes and I could hear the two of them in the
bathroom. DJ came down dressed and ready to eat. He got his own breakfast
and I asked 'How did he sleep?' DJ answered 'Actually very good I never
heard you get up and other than Stephen trying to get over me to go to
the bathroom I never woke up. I know the little guy is happy.'


We got to Quassy just before eleven it was kind of crowded but since it
was a Friday and getting close to school starting. The majority of the
rides were for Eric and Stuart. There were a few for Stephen and even
less for DJ. I and DJ went on a few rides with Stephen where it was
allowed. They all enjoyed the arcade and the three older boys had girls
talking to them. Near 12:30 I asked if anyone wanted lunch. The boys
looked at the menu at the snack bar and the three older ones said 'Papa
there really isn't anything that we think is worth the price. Can we
leave and go somewhere and have lunch?' I told them 'I know of a deli on
the way home and we get sandwiches. Those that mean you are ready to
leave?' They all said 'Yes.' I thought to myself 'We have raised food
snobs which is a good thing.' I had to ask 'Were you guys disappointed in
Quassy?' Eric and Stuart answer 'Not all the rides were cool but how many
times can you go on them.' DJ just smiled and I said 'You don't have to
say anything. I'm sorry for dragging you here.' DJ says 'Papa it was
worth seeing and some of the arcade games were cool but the place is way
expensive.' Stephen says 'I couldn't go on the good rides the rides for
me were for babies.' I said 'What about the bumper cars?' They all said
'They were cool they never saw them before.'


We got to the deli and I told them they could have whatever they wanted.
Stephen and DJ had liverwurst and onion grinder, Eric and I had turkey
grinders and Stuart had a grilled cheese. We sat outside and except for
Stephen and I everyone finished their grinders.

When we got home I told Eric and Stuart we were having swordfish on the
grill for supper. They answered they had plans. Stephen was ready for a
nap and I asked DJ if he wouldn't mind staying here with him while I went
to get Zachary at work if not he would have to take him home to stay with
the three of them till I got back. DJ says 'Papa I am going home to check
my laptop he can come with me and I may take a nap myself. Can we have
corn again tonight it was good?' I said 'I would stop and get some on the
way back from getting Zachary.' I dropped them all off at their house and
made sure they got in then went home and looked to see what else I may
need. Fortunately I was all set till at least Monday and I figured if I
got the corn before I got Zachary maybe we could do something before the
boys came back.


I ran to the farm and got a dozen corn and go to the shop with a few
minutes to spare. Zachary was the first one out and I was driving even
before he got his seat belt on. He says 'Stephen still napping?' I answer
'I hope so.' and give a brief rundown of our day. We got home and I could
see Stephen's blind still closed. I left the corn on the porch and we
went in and locked the door. Zachary took off his work boots and left his
lunch box on the floor and I led him down the cellar.


I took him in my arms and kissed him. Zachary moaned and got weak in the

gym tomorrow to work out?' I answer 'No we have everything downstairs you
can work out with us or by yourself if you want. We usually take weekends

or should I make more popcorn?' Stephen says 'No popcorn tonight I like

and they nodded. 'Well go get them while I finish cleaning up' I said to
Stephen. He went down the cellar and DJ said 'I will clean up the supper

cookies. After they finished I told Stephen let's get his shower out of
the way, DJ went home to get clothes for tomorrow and Zachary put away

wet towels and Zachary says 'You go next. This way I can do the towels
and actually clean the bathroom and get it out of the way.'


Now that everyone was showered we all sat to watch the movie. Stephen

Zachary got up to get the towels out of the dryer and I helped folding
them and to bring them upstairs. He told the boys goodnight he was going

said 'I will sleep good there is no way you can make a midnight visit not

downstairs. We stayed up another half hour or so then went up to bed. As

I went up and DJ was already in bed and Stephen was still in the
bathroom. I got into bed and heard the toilet and the sink but no Stephen

awake so I could say goodnight again.' DJ says 'Was he?' Stephen says 'No
I could hear the whistle I knew he was asleep.' DJ says 'Well goodnight
I'm going to sleep.' I say 'Goodnight grandsons.' Stephen says 'Goodnight
Papa Goodnight DJ.' Sleep came fast for all of us.

I got up, got dressed and went in to see Zachary. I got on the floor on

quietly and opened his eyes. Zachary smiled and said 'Morning what time
is it?' I said almost seven and he moaned again and said 'Goodnight.' I
asked 'What do you want for breakfast?' Zachary answered 'Pancakes, eggs
and bacon.' I kissed him again and left. I went down put on coffee and
started making pancake batter. When the coffee was ready I took my cup
and went out to the deck. The heat hadn't started yet.


I went in and made the bacon and put that in the oven to say warm. I
looked at the clock it was after eight. I made the pancakes and also put
them in the oven to keep warm. Then I heard feet run into the bathroom

Stephen ask 'How did you sleep?' I answered 'Not so well I kept being

going into any explanations. He drank his juice and I just said 'Ask DJ
or Zachary. Speaking of which are either of them awake?' Stephen says
'Not really DJ never moved and Zachary told me in a little bit.' I asked

I sent him upstairs to tell them that breakfast was ready if they wanted
to get up that we are eating now. I heard both teenagers moan and then I
heard scuffling as he tried to wake each one with Stephen laughing so
much he got the hiccups. Stephen came down all de shelved. We set the
island and I took only what we wanted out of the oven. I ask 'Do you want
eggs with your pancakes?' and he says 'One.' I made one for him and two
for me over easy.

We were just finishing when Zachary came down. He got his plate and
filled it and he wanted two eggs. Zachary says 'Stephen did you sleep
okay?' Stephen says 'Yes did you?' Zachary says 'Until I kept being woken
up by someone.' Stephen laughed and said 'Papa didn't sleep well he said
the light from the moons kept waking him up.' Zachary laughed real hard.
Zachary says 'Do you know what Jared meant?' Stephen says 'Not really the
moon wasn't out last night.' Zachary says 'He meant DJ and yours butts
that they lit up the room probably when you moved and pajamas came down a

hard he snorted and says 'I can't wait to tell DJ.'

DJ coming down the stairs and says 'Tell DJ what?' Stephen says 'I asked
Papa how did he sleep and he told me the light from the moons kept waking

now?' Stephen nods. DJ turns to me and says 'Papa stop encouraging him.'
I ask 'How many eggs with your pancakes?' He answers 'Two.' While they

I made twenty pancakes and five are left, all the turkey bacon is gone

They laughed and talked while Zachary and DJ ate. Stephen wanted to know
about taking DJ fishing. I told them it was DJ who wanted to go. I told
them I never had any interest in fishing I never took my kids or Zachary
and my family never did. I went with friends growing up but to be honest
it was boring. They wanted to know from DJ why. DJ thinks it was from
cartoons after going the once it was enough. I would cast my line then

I say 'Let's get going so we can get outside. Tonight will be lamb chops

clean upstairs.' Stephen says 'Papa let's go over and do Mario's garden
first.' Zachary says 'If you see my grandparents ask them if they will be
around later so I can visit.' Stephen says 'Okay.'


I lather him up with sunblock and we walk across the street he is wearing
beat up sneakers and his pajama shorts. Stephen says 'Papa we just weeded
yesterday and some are growing back already. I answer 'Everything grows
good and fast in this kind of weather, look at the pumpkins they are
going to be huge.' Stephen says 'Papa look it there are more cucumbers
and squashes to pick. When are we going to get more tomatoes? I answer
'They are going to pop all at once and you will get tired of looking at
them. What do you want for your birthday?' Stephen says 'I don't know.' I
ask 'Are you coming shopping with me tomorrow morning?' Stephen says 'I
am I haven't gone with you in a while.' I tell him 'That's okay you need
your sleep too.' As we were finishing up Maria came out and said 'Good
morning men.' Stephen says 'Good morning Noni. Zachary wants to come over
later to visit are you going to be home?' Maria answers 'Tell my grandson
yes but after 1pm. Mario and I have to go visit someone this morning.'
Stephen says 'I will.' He hands her the squash and cucumbers and kisses
her and we leave.

We go back across the street and DJ is already weeding.  Stephen says 'I
have to go to the bathroom and goes right inside. I went to help DJ in
the garden and I asked 'Do you know if you are sleeping over?' DJ says
'Papa I don't know yet, but even if I don't have to go out I need a
little time for myself.' I looked at him and smiled and said 'I'm glad
you are being honest with me, but right now you can't be honest with your
brother it would hurt him.' DJ says 'I know and I feel guilty as all
hell.' I say 'I'm not trying to tell you what to do but if oyu don't go
out tonight is it going to kill you to stay one more night. You can take
an extra-long shower this afternoon and tonight.' I nudged his shoulder

know me.' I just smile and say 'You keep forgetting I was your age too.'
We got back to weeding and nothing else was said.


Stephen opened up the back door already in his board shorts and said he
was helping Zachary and would be out later. We finished weeding and
picked a few more tomatoes. DJ vacuumed the pool and I tested the water
and hung Stephen's life jacket on the back of a chair.

We swam and ate lunch. Stephen and I sat in the sun, DJ went home to
shower and check in with his friends and Zachary showered and went to see
his grandparents. When we were alone Stephen told me the jacket for DJ
should be here in two weeks. We both took a nap in the hammock.  DJ came
back and said 'I'm not going out tonight so I can stay here again if that
is okay.' Stephen says 'Yea we can watch the Dalmatian movie.' I just

a great companion and confidant the rest of his life. Zachary came home
with some chocolate chip cookies and a few cucumbers from Maria. He also
made the announcement that they were flying to Canada on the 18th and
returning on Sunday the 21st. I said 'Everyone will come back that day.
It will be just DJ and I for four days.'


We ate inside again because of the heat and humidity I just hope that
they have this kind of weather when they are in Wildwood but also hope it
is cooler for DJ's practice. Again Stephen knows how to clean a bone like
me. There were a few chops left over that Zachary can take to lunch
Monday. While they cleaned up I made my shopping lists for the morning. I
had to figure out what I needed to get ahead on with DJ staying here for
eleven days. I basically knew what he liked and will have to ask Stephen
and Andrea for more info.

Stephen went up to shower first and again he was singing and very happy.
I washed his hair and DJ came up with a warm towel and Stephen called him
into the bedroom and I heard laughing and DJ saying 'Bro even your feet

While alone with Stephen I asked 'What does DJ eat for lunch?' Stephen

got a pretty good idea of what I needed to stock up on.


DJ came down and they started the movie. Zachary was watching it too so I
went up and showered. Stephen says 'This and Snow White are my two
favorites so far.' Zachary said 'Goodnight I'm going to shower and go to
bed see you guys in the morning.' I made Stephen go up with a warm towel
for him. While they were watching a 'Walton' episode I went up and kissed
him and whispered 'Only two more nights and we will be in the same bed.'

brushed their teeth and Stephen had ot go check on Zachary before he came

I got up got dressed and was out the door to pick up Anthony. We talked
and caught up on our week. I told him about Quassy that only his older

for the rides. The store wasn't that crowded people must be away. I told
him I expected him for supper while his family was away. In between
stores I cooked off two packages of turkey bacon and made coffee. I went
to see if Stephen was awake he wasn't he didn't even move when I walked
in the room. I went in the other bedroom and got on the bed and nuzzled

had to leave.

answered 'We can go tomorrow you never moved when I went to wake you up.

the big bottles of Gatorade for DJ while he is here plus the small
bottles so you can sneak them in his bag.' I answered 'Okay we will go to
BJ's tomorrow. You only need seven bottles or fourteen if there are
double sessions.' Stephen asks 'What are double sessions? Zachary answers
'There is practice in the morning and afternoon. But it can't be every
day so if it is every other day then you only need ten. If I remember I
think it two days one week and then three days the next. I think that is
the law now so there isn't any chance of.' Stephen says 'Of what?'
Zachary says 'So they don't miss out on the end of summer vacation.'
Stephen goes 'Oh.'  Zachary looked at me with relief on his face. I knew
he didn't want to mention heat exhaustion. DJ came down and was ready to
eat and Zachary had a second sandwich and Stephen and I split one. I
announced 'I'm making rigatoni with ricotta and meatballs for supper.'
All three of them cheered. Stephen says 'Papa we haven't had it in a long
time.'

Stephen ran to the bathroom. Zachary went up to make the beds and DJ sat
with me and had a second bacon and egg sandwich. I asked 'DJ what do you
want me to get for your lunches the week you are here?' DJ says 'Papa
anything is fine.' I say 'Stop you will be having practice and it is no
problem to get you what you will eat. I know liverwurst and pb&j but what
else after all you will be by yourself.' DJ says 'We have a week I will
let you know.' DJ helped me cleanup then Stephen and him went swimming.
For lunch they had fruit and yogurt. DJ went home to get clean up and
check with his friends and Stephen napped. Zachary and I made up a menu
for the next two weeks. I figured if I made something good and healthy DJ
and us could have it the next day for lunch.


Zachary and I snuck down to the cellar and got each other off while
Stephen napped. After wards I made oatmeal for all our breakfast tomorrow
and got Zachary's lunch ready. He packed his gym bag for tomorrow.
Stephen woke up and we all went and sat out on the deck it was getting
cloudy the heatwave was breaking and before you knew it poured.

DJ came over and we had supper. For dessert we had the chocolate chip
cookies from Maria. Stephen was disappointed that DJ wasn't staying to
sleep but he smoothed it over by saying you really haven't spent any time
alone with Papa. We walked DJ home and I went in to see the other
two plus my daughter and son-in-law while Stephen went to check something
in his room.


I sat for a while and Sr says 'Dad I don't know what it is but you have

brothers.' I say 'I can't take the entire credit look at me and my
siblings.' Sr. looked confused and I reminded him about Charlie and the
reunion. Andrea says 'I'm still a little concerned about school.' I
answer 'Don't be I already spoke to the other two about scaring him.' She
says 'Not only that about leaving all you grownups.' I told her the story
about Zachary and myself and how it will be different he has his brothers
I was alone and so was Zachary that is a big difference. I say 'You're a
nurse you know these things and that reminds me what do I need to get for
DJ so he eats while I am at work he will be practicing he needs to eat
more than liverwurst and pb&j.' Andrea gave me a few more suggestions for
him which was good.

Stephen and I headed home it was almost 8pm and the sun was going down.
He went up to shower and I asked if there was anything he wanted to do
tomorrow and he just wanted to go to BJ's and swim. Zachary came up with
a warm towel and stayed upstairs so he could shower next. Zachary
explained to Stephen he couldn't stay home tomorrow there was a special
project at work that was his responsibility and that he was sorry and he
would make it up to him, but also he would be alone with Jared for most

Zachary and Stephen were watching something while I showered and not long
after that we went to bed. In bed we talked and he told me that he has
been having a good time staying here. I told him just think you will be
here for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas and you will have days
off from school and can stay here if you want. Stephen says 'Really.' I

I got up with Zachary got him all packed and sent him on his way
reminding him to text when he got there. I didn't go back to bed I went
down and got on the treadmill then worked out. I came up showered then
put coffee on. I put a pork butt in the crock pot. I let Stephen sleep
till 7:30 then got him up. Andrea mentioned that when they came back from
Wildwood they would have nine days to get used to getting up early for
school. Stephen and Eric were early risers DJ and Stuart could sleep.

We had our oatmeal then took off for BJ's. We got his Gatorade and he
looked at the clothes and I got the four of them more hoodies that were
marked down. Stephen looked at the Halloween costumes and I remembered he
didn't know Zachary already got him a costume. I told him that we are
going as sailors. Stephen says 'Like Popeye?' I say 'Yes but you can't
tell anyone.' Stephen asks 'So you are Popeye and we are your kids?' I
say 'Yes.' Stephen says 'Okay.'


I put chicken breasts on to boil for soup and to make salad. We check the
gardens and pick more tomatoes plus squash and cucumbers. Maria comes out
and talks to us while we are there. She asks 'Stephen do you want squash
and eggs tomorrow for lunch?' Stephen says 'Noni whatever you want to
make is okay with me.' I beam because I know he means it and so does she.
Maria says 'Stephen you have only three days before you leave for
vacation.' Stephen says 'I know but I will miss you and Papa.' She tells
him 'But while you are there your Papa has to work and DJ has practice
and I am going to Canada to see Dan so it is a perfect time to go away.'
He kind of perked up with that kind of reasoning. We left to go home and
have lunch and nap.


We had some fruit and he had a pb&j sandwich. I say Stephen do you want
to nap outside or upstairs. Stephen voted for outside it was comfortable
out. The two of settled on the hammock and I ask 'Why are you quiet?'
Stephen turns and answers 'Papa I feel strange.' I ask 'Do you mean like
sick?' I felt his forehead and he wasn't warm and he was dumping like
normal so I knew it wasn't that. Stephen almost tearfully 'I don't know
not sick but strange like summer isn't the same.' I say 'Like you feel
the weather is changing well it is; summer is almost over.' Stephen says
'Yeah but inside me like I'm not going to be doing the same things
anymore.' I turned over and held him and say 'Boo I thought we talked
about this and you were okay.' Stephen says 'I know but my insides feel
strange all jittery and shaky at times.' I say 'Stephen those are growing
pains. We all went through that some of us still do at times.' Stephen
says 'Really.' I say 'Believe me it is normal. You see the weather is
changing the days are getting shorter you are starting a new adventure
with school, you may make some new friends, your days are going to be
busy with school, doing things with Maria and Zachary and me, going to

went home from being here a month last winter?' Stephen says 'Yeah it is
Papa.' I say 'So you were missing all of us up here then and now you are
missing summer and everything you do. It is all part of growing up just
think in a few days you are going to Wildwood and you like going there
swimming in the ocean, walking the piers, going on all the rides. This
feeling will pass.' Stephen says 'Papa you are smart.' I laugh 'Not smart
it just all happened to me first, just promise me when you feel like this
come and talk to me. I will always try to help you.' Stephen says 'Okay
Papa.' He fell asleep with me holding him. I thought about all the times
I felt like he did and had to smile. It was always the end of summer, the
first day of work or school after Christmas. I didn't realize I had
nodded out myself till DJ woke me up. I had slept a good thirty minutes
and Stephen a little longer. DJ wanted to use the treadmill and weights
and went in.

I got up and Stephen woke up and I told him I was going in to lay there
as long as he wanted. I made the chicken salad and finished off the
pulled pork. We were having turkey burgers and tomato and cucumber salad
for supper with baked beans.


Stephen came in and after having a drink I gave him water to take down to
his brother and he went to visit with DJ downstairs. DJ didn't want to
stay for supper and told Stephen not to stay to late if he wanted him to
watch TV with him. That made me happy.


Zachary came in and we got our gym stuff and work clothes ready for the
next day. Our lunches would be the rigatoni from Sunday and I told
Stephen I would bring him some tomorrow so he can have it for supper. We
ate inside and after we cleaned up I walked him home. We brought all the
hoodies I had gotten in BJ's for the boys. They went over big. I told
Andrea I will talk with her before Thursday. She said to Stephen 'Welcome
home stranger.' Stephen says 'Mom I was only across the street with Papa
it's not like I left for far away.' I got my hugs and said 'Goodnight'
and left. I missed them but it would be nice to sleep with Zachary again.
