That was a big deal for our school since up till then we were pretty shitty. iI had just transferred in at the start of the year so a lot of the guys said it was because of me. It wasn't, but I wasn't one to pass up free praise. We had driven up to Oakland where we would be staying at a hotel room, to guys to a room. A couple people had asked it I wanted to share a room but I turned them down, I had a target in my sights, a target I had wanted since the first day I had walked into the locker room. His name was Troy and he was everything teenage jocks want to be. He was over six feet, dark black hair, green eyes and a body that was sculpted by god. His dad was one of those try hards who had been working his son since he was 8, trying to turn him into the perfect jock. His father had succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams and then some. Troy was a great athlete, a nice guy and all around sweetheart. What he wasn't was bright. I don't want to call him stupid but he was quick to follow and never asked questions. I assume it was a lifetime of following his dad's orders combined with a decade of coaches screaming at him what to do that had conditioned him into this sheeplike nature, frankly I didn't care. Troy was a mountain I was not only going to climb but to conquer. I was going to plant my flag in his ass and make him beg for more which started with sharing a room. When I sat down next to him n the bus he was surprised. Like I said, I was popular on the team for just showing up and that fame extended to Troy, the guy who was probably responsible for our winning streak in the first place. But Troy didn't know that. Troy had been taught an awww shucks, it was the team, kind of mentality which meant he would never take credit for anything other than just being part of the team. So when I sat down his eyebrows raised, not sure why I would be talking to him. Bless his heart. "Hey, you wanna share a room?" I asked. "Me?" he literally pointed to himself. I gave him that Zach Morris smile that made everything think they were in on the joke, "Yeah you man, I feel like we haven't had a lot of time to talk." We had never talked other the occasional nod and random bullshit but he was too polite to point that out and I was too insistent for him to try. "Yeah sure, I don't mind. I think I was supposed to be with..." "Don't worry about it, I can take care of it." The exact words he needed to hear. Like the well trained baseball cow he was he smiled and nodded, leaving me in charge to handle the details. A pattern that was going to continue all night. I walked over to the guy he was going to room with and told him to find someone else,. He opened his mouth to protest but thought better of it and just nodded. Then I made sure everyone else was busy with other things and sat back down with Troy, "All settled." "Cool," he said, not wanting to know how I did it, another good sign. We talked as we drove, he had a girlfriend but was a virgin, he was into his local church, but that was because of his mom and not him. He was the prototypical All American boy, just the type I was drawn to and just the type I liked to corrupt. He thought the fact I was a military brat and had lived all over was incredibly cool and made me seem more worldly than I was. He had never been outside of California and was looking forward to getting a scholarship out of state. He didn't say it was to get away from this parents and the role that had molded him into. I doubt he even thought it consciously, but the boy wanted to break free. And I was here to help him do that.
