Now just sit back and enjoy! The Cabin by the Lake Chapter 16 Dennis received a phone call. He and Kyle were needed back at the lake. There were three parties coming and only two guides at headquarters. They headed for the lake. So much for taking a little time off. Kyle called his parents and asked if they could delay their visit for awhile until things slowed a bit. They agreed and said they would try again in two weeks. It was getting toward the end of the summer season, the pack trips would start becoming fewer and fewer. Winter was probably coming early this year. The leaves at the higher elevations were beginning to get a little color. There was a cold nip in the air, especially in the early mornings and evening. The mountain peaks had a little dusting of snow on the tops. The last trip before school started had been completed. Kyle called his parents and told them they could come and stay as long as they wanted. Kyle and Dennis wanted to take them on a short pack trip. The boys dug out the cold weather camping gear and warm clothes. This time of year was the favorite of theirs. Not only were there less people but the fall colors were beautiful, making the scenery beyond belief. Wildlife could be seen in abundance and it was fun to watch them scurrying around preparing for winter. Kyle and Dennis spent their free time between the summer pack trips and hunting season cleaning and repairing equipment. After hunting season the animals would be moved to Christmas Valley for the winter. They would store all the gear in the barn and thus it would be ready to use when needed again. They had just returned from taking a load to the barn . Kyle froze in his tracks and turned as white as ghost. There was a man sitting on the front porch swing. Dennis knew instantly that this was the source of Kyle's anxiety. "What are you doing here? How did you find me? You know that your restraining order is still in effect," shouted Kyle. "Get out of here now!" "Relax, Kyle, I mean no harm! I just want to talk and then I will disappear and out of your life forever," replied the man. Dennis just walked into the house and slipped his revolver underneath his shirt and went back out on the porch. "I thought you were asked to leave. Now, I am telling you to go before things get nasty." "I have no quarrel with you. Why don't you just go back in the house and let me talk with Kyle alone. He's a big boy now and doesn't need anyone to fight his battles for him. again. Do you know who I am?" asked the man. "Yes, I know who you are and what kind of person you are. You're Kyle's ex. I must say you are not welcome here and I would suggest you leave now. I won't ask you again," ordered Dennis. "Look, Mister, this is just between Kyle and me. So why don't you just go in the house and leave us alone. All I ask is five minutes," pleaded the man. "That's up to Kyle. However, I am staying. What do you think, Kyle?" inquired Dennis. "Toby, I think you are just wasting your time, but you have five minutes and not a second more. Your time starts now," said Kyle, looking at his watch. "Kyle, you and I had a good thing going, but I managed to throw it all away. But that's not the reason that I'm here. I've come to realize that what we had is completely over, and I have no intentions of trying to rekindle a dead fire," said Toby, pausing and taking a deep breath. "Why, then, are you here? By the way, how did you find me, and how did you get here? There is no car here. I know you didn't just walk, you're too damn lazy to do that," said Kyle. "I have a friend who works for the phone company. He was able to trace the calls your folks made. Finally, he got lucky and found a call made to your cell. Then all he had to do was look you up and get an address." "Look, poop for brains, that is all illegal. What is your friends name? I bet that I know him. I'm afraid your friend and you are in deep trouble and you both will probably be arrested," Kyle said. " It is Mark Little, and yes you know him. I know I`m in serious trouble! I am desperate and had to find you. As to how I got here, I hitched a ride and will leave the same way. I need your help. You're my last chance. I hope that we can put the past behind us and make a new beginning," pleaded Toby. "If you're thinking in a romantic way, then just forget it Buster. You had your chance once and blew it big time. You're history as far as I'm concerned. I want nothing more to do with you. So why don't you just leave now while you are still able to? I'm able to hold my own now and I don't need anyone to fight my battles for me. I can and should just beat your ass to pulp like you did to me until my friend stepped in and took control. I feel nothing but contempt for you," exclaimed Kyle. "I've absolutely no interest in you whatsoever. I just need a place to hide until I can get enough money to lose myself. Then, I'll be out of your life forever," said Toby. "Toby, you are out of my life now, so give me one good reason, why I should trust you or even want to help you. Two things for sure: One, you can't stay here. Two, you'll get not one red cent from me. So I'll say again, be on your way!" said Kyle, with a very agitated look. "Kyle, I have no other place to go and absolutely no money. I have to lose myself completely or spend the rest of my life in prison. I had a lover and I went into one of my jealous rages and beat him to death. The law is just one step behind me. I just want to get away and start a new life," shouted Toby. "You want me to help! Get out of here, now!" roared Kyle. Toby made a fist and took a step toward Kyle. Dennis took his pistol out and pointed it at Toby. "One more step, and you will be filled with holes. You will look like one big water bag full of holes. Don't get me wrong. I know how to use this gun and I can hit where I am aiming. You'll be filled with bullets, and none of them will hit a vital organ. I want you to suffer like you made Kyle and the other man suffer. Now hit the deck! On your belly with your hands on your head! One false move and you've had it!" commanded Dennis. "I don't have a quarrel with you. So why don't you put the gun away?" implored Toby. "Now, this is my last warning!" shouted Dennis. "Move it!" Toby did as he was told. Dennis went over and searched him for weapons. "Kyle, go into the house and get the handcuffs. We can cuff him to the corner post and then call the police. You, there on the floor, don`t even bat an eye or you`re history!" said Dennis with anger in his voice. "Please, let me go!" begged Toby. "Shut up. I have had enough from you. Give my ears a break," sneered Dennis. Kyle returned with the handcuffs. "OK, get up and stand behind the corner post, facing it and extend you arms around it. Kyle will place the handcuffs on your wrists. Then, we will just wait until the police arrive and haul your sorry ass off to jail," Dennis said unsympathetically. "Maybe we should get some duct tape for your mouth, and then we won't have to listen to you." After Toby was safely secured to the post and his mouth covered with tape, Dennis and Kyle went into the house and made their call to the police. "Do you think we are doing the right thing?" asked Kyle. "Absolutely, Toby has to be held responsible for his actions. We can't just turn him loose and let him repeat this behavior again. If we don't turn him in, we could face charges for aiding and abetting. He is not worth jail time for us," said Dennis. "I agree. I am so scared, and I keep thinking that something will go wrong," Kyle said with a frown on his face and shaking like a wet dog. "Kyle, relax! We have everything under control. We can't play any `what if' games. Some things we have no control over and we can't mess up our heads trying to change them. We'll just have to cross the bridges as we come to them. One thing for certain, we'll cross them together," said Dennis in a reassuring way. "Dennis, please just hold me for a few minutes and then I will be ok. Thanks, Dennis! You're my hero, and I love you with all my heart. You're right, let's go out and tell that SOB what is in store for him. I'm glad we have his mouth taped. I just know what he would be yelling," grinned Kyle. Soon the deputy sheriff arrived to take Toby into custody. "You know, guys, this is one bad dude. I ran his name through the files and he has a rap sheet as long as your arm, including murder. His friend Mark Little is clean. I'm glad that you gave it to me when you called. You're lucky that he was unarmed. It could have been a bad scene. Guys, will you please try to stay out of trouble? It is getting old coming to your rescue all the time," laughed Officer Tom. "Tom, you know it's your job to protect us. It seems like we do all the dangerous work, and you get the credit. Be careful on the way back to the station and don't pick up any hitchhikers. You're too good of a guy to lose and we'd sure hate to break in someone new. We'll call if we need you again and next time try not to take so long getting here." laughed Dennis. "By the way, are you and your family going to make it to the barbeque next weekend? We have your name on the list of the first hunters that will be going out. Don`t forget to ask for the time off." Tom replied, "You bet we are. A person can't pass up a free meal. You just don't realize how much food two teenage boys can put away. I think sometimes my wife and I will both have to work two jobs just to keep up. When will we be going on the hunting trip?" "We're taking just friends and relatives out the first weekend of archery season which will be open for both deer and elk. We'll be out for four days. You know you could always come to work for us. We would pay you just enough to buy ointment to rub on your saddle sores," laughed Kyle. "That's what I'm afraid of. I think I'll just stay with the Sheriff's department and just complain," laughed Tom. "I think I will just leave the tape on this guy so it will be nice and quiet going to Bend." "You know that would be cruel and unusual punishment. I'd just suggest rolling up the divider window. Hey, Tom, I want to pull the tape off. I want just one more piece of revenge, and then I through with him forever," Kyle reached up and pulled the tape off with one big jerk. "Hey, that hurt like hell!" yelled Toby. "Just be glad that it was not wrapped around your dick. You would't need a wax job. I can just hear you screaming," laughed Kyle. "Tom, you had better get him out of here before I decide to wrap his whole body in duct tape and then rip it off. That would be a lot of fun. He is one hairy dude. I know for sure. So we will see you at the barbeque." "Bye guys! Go have some fun!" said Tom, and he was gone. "I think I need to go and soak in the hot tub for about an hour. I am all tied in knots," said Kyle. "I'm ready also. How would you like a good back massage?" asked Dennis. "I think I need more than just a back massage. How about my whole body, and I don't mean the part that you like to massage so well. But you can massage it, too, if you'd like," grinned Kyle. "You're on! Let's go!" Dennis said as he was stripping.
