Chapter 9 It seemed like years since Josh and I had returned from Jamaica but in actuality it had only been a couple of weeks. We had talked once we had returned and many times since then and decided that we were in no hurry to get married. It was the beginning of December and Christmas was fast approaching. I was up in the attic trying to locate all of the Christmas decorations that I hadn't used in many years. "Alright where the hell are you," I said to myself while moving what must have been the 100th box. "I'm right here," a voice said behind me. "Shit, Josh you scared the hell out of me," I said while holding my chest. "Sorry baby," he said while kissing me, "whatcha doin?" "Lookin for my Christmas decorations, without much success," I said tiredly. "Ooohh, someone is in the holiday spirit," he said sitting in an old rocking chair and pulling me into his lap. "Well what can I say it's all your fault," I said kissing him. When I started to pull away he pulled me back in for another, and another. We continued to make out for some time and seemed to be getting pulled further and further away from reality. Had we be paying attention we would have heard the cracking of wood, but we did not. So the next thing we knew we were both tumbling to the floor in a pile of boards and me on top of Josh. "Ouch" he said. "Ouch what?" I asked him. "Ouch my butt," he said while we stood up. "Ahhh, poor baby, you weren't complaining last night and we did far worse than fall on your butt." I said mischievously and then resumed my search for the long lost Christmas decorations. About an hour later we had managed to locate everything we would need to deck the halls with the exception of the tree. "I know it has to be somewhere up here but I don't know where." I said. Josh then came over and wrapped his arms around my waist. "I've got a better idea, let's get a real tree this year, I hate those artificial ones anyway." He said pulling me against his chest. "Just don't make me go out in the middle of nowhere just so we can chop down some unsuspecting tree. My dad used to make us do that and it was not fun." I said while laying my head on his shoulder. "Whatever you want baby, whatever you want." He said and we continued to stand there for god knows how long, content to just be with one another. We had managed to find the perfect tree after what seemed like an hour of looking through them. It was a good thing that I had cathedral ceilings in my living room because the tree was about eight foot tall. We had managed to get it set up and partially decorated by about 10 pm and then Josh decided to sit down on the sofa and take a break while I made some hot chocolate. I was waiting on the water to boil and staring out the patio door. It was a nice evening and Josh had built a fire while we were setting up the tree. I noticed that the few remaining leaves on the trees were dancing in the breeze. I thought back to the beach in Jamaica and Josh's proposal. I still wondered if I had made a hasty decision and if I was really doing the right thing. I had dreamed of being married all of my life and I knew that it was something that I wanted more than life itself, but was it right to do it now? The tea kettle whistled and brought me out of my reverie. I poured the hot water into the cups and stirred in the hot cocoa mix. After adding some marshmallows to each of our cups I headed back to the living room. When I rounded the corner of the sofa I found that Josh had drifted off to sleep. I smiled and looked down at him. I saw the lines that were normally present in his face were now smooth. The corners of his mouth were turned up in a slight grin and he was holding a sofa pillow on his chest. I sat the cocoa on the table and kneeled down beside the sofa. I smoothed the few stray strands of hair off of his face and he murmured in his sleep. I turned and crossed to the window and stared out into the dark Georgia night. The moon was shining and a stream of the light caught the row of diamonds encircling my left ring finger. I ran my fingers over it and in my mind I could hear the voice of my father. He had always told me that I would never amount to anything, and there were times that I thought that he was right. I needed to clear my thoughts and because it was such a nice night and so clear I decided to take a walk outside around the pool for a few minutes. It wasn't as cold outside as I had thought and the wind was blowing in from the south so the fire that josh had built seemed kind of useless but it was still cozy and romantic. Well it would have been romantic if he had not fallen asleep on the couch. The air was the freshest it had been in a long time and it stimulated the senses. It was as if I hadn't breathed before and this air was new as was everything around me. I looked up at the sky and noticed that I could see what seemed to be a million stars. The moon was illuminating the water in the pool and the wind was causing it to ripple. I could hear nothing but the sounds of nature. No cars, no horns, no sirens, and no one telling me what I should do. I was alone with my thoughts for the moment I could finally think clearly and decide once and for all if I was doing the right thing. Since we had returned from our vacation I had been wrestling with my decision to marry Josh. I loved him more than life itself and I had dreamed of getting married for quite a long time, but the question I still hadn't answered was whether that day had come. It wasn't a question as to whether or not I loved Josh. I was utterly and totally head over heels in love with the man and I always would be. My mind was working itself in circles and I was getting nowhere. I hadn't been sleeping that well lately and it was beginning to take its toll. I had also been working double shifts at the hospital so that I could manage to get Christmas off to spend it with my baby so my body was so tired and I couldn't think or function as well as I normally would be. I walked over and laid down on one of the chaise lounges that were there on the patio. I looked up at the sky and thought back to that beach and Josh' proposal. I remember vividly the look in his eyes and the softness of his voice. His eyes conveyed nothing but love and honesty. His smile had wavered and his eyes had began to tear when I had hesitated with my answer. That was the only time that I can remember that I had saw Josh at all vulnerable. Even when I had met him in the hospital he seemed like nothing could harm him. He exuded this air of confidence that amazed me. As I sat there remembering other thoughts began creeping into my mind and I wondered what it meant. Over the past few weeks I had been thinking quite a bit about Lee and had even dreamed about him a few times. I hadn't had one of those dreams in a long time. They were all the same though. The dream started out when Lee and I were together. Everything was as it had always been and we had just finished having sex, I was standing on the front porch smoking a cigarette and he walked up behind me. As usual he bummed a cigg and we stood there smoking and not saying a word. I was nearly finished when he said that maybe it wasn't a good idea if we did "that" anymore. By "that" he was referring to sex. All I could do was stare at him. He hadn't even looked my way, he just continued smoking and staring straight ahead. When he finished his cigarette he turned and walked back into the house. I couldn't do anything, I just stared at the spot he had just vacated. I kept staring for sometime and then the front door opened and out walked Lee carrying his things. He breezed right past me and down the steps without saying a word. I watched as he put his things in the trunk of his car then opened the door. He briefly looked in my direction and then got in, backed the car down the driveway, and drove down the street and out of my life forever. Every time I thought of Lee I became emotional but this time was different. I realized that even though I had come to terms with the fact that Josh is nothing like Lee, I am still afraid he will leave me. I'm surprised it took me this long to figure it out. When I wake up and Josh is not in bed with me, for a split second I panic and fear that he has left me. Then once I realize that he is in the bathroom or the kitchen I am fine. This is the entire problem, I am afraid that he is going to pull a disappearing act and I will be left alone again. I got up and began to walk around the pool and stare down at the water. I wasn't finding many answers out here but at least I knew what the problem was now. I guess what if all boiled down to was I needed to know if Josh needed me as much as I needed him. I pulled the pack of cigarettes out of my pocket and lit one. I hadn't been smoking that much now a days but I just felt that I needed one now. I sat down and dangled my feet in the heated pool water. I was lost in thought staring down at the water and the only thing that I had figured out is that the moon had disappeared. I looked up and saw that the sky had clouded over and didn't look as peaceful as it had earlier, and I still hadn't figured anything out. I had no idea how long I had been outside thinking but I jumped when I felt Josh's hand on my shoulder. He simply looked down at me and stared into my eyes. He did that a lot, sometimes he stared at me so long I thought that I might have something on my face. He hadn't said a word and after a moment he sat down beside me and looked out over the water. We sat there side by side staring out at the smooth surface of the water and watching it ripple when we moved our feet. It was somewhat awkward but at the same time relaxing. "I'm scared," Josh said finally breaking the silence. "Of what baby," I said reaching out to grab his hand. "Us," He said flatly. "Oh" I said with a million thoughts running through my mind. I figured that this would be it, this was when Josh was going to leave me. He had had time to think about his proposal and realized that he had made a mistake. "If you are having second thoughts about us getting married then we don't have to. I know it is a big step and you may not be ready and I do love you and want to be with you and can't bear the thought of life without you, but if you think we are rushing things then we can slow down." I said rambling knowing that my voice was shaking and I was trying desperately to hold back the tears. I was playing with the ring on my left hand and my hands were shaking. "No baby, calm down," he said taking both of my hands in his. "I still want to be your husband for the rest of my life that hasn't changed. " "But I thought... you...you aren't leaving me?" I asked looking up into his eyes. "No baby, let me explain. When I woke up in there I was kind of disoriented, and didn't know where I was, but I knew you weren't there. I knew you weren't in my arms and that scared me. I got up and started looking around the house and couldn't find you anywhere. I even checked the garage for your car and once I saw it was there I calmed down a little. But I still hadn't found my baby. I walked through the kitchen and saw you standing out here. I watched for a few minutes watching you think and wrestle with whatever it is that you need to think about. I was just grateful that I had found you. I can't bear to lose you Scott." He said looking at our intertwined hands. He looked up at me and I saw his eyes brimming over with tears. "Ohh god Josh, I'm sorry I just sort of lost track of time." I said pulling him into my arms. I stood up and pulled Josh over to the lounge chair I had been sitting in earlier. I laid down and he laid on me and curled up against my chest. He had never held on to me so tightly. I stroked his hair and let him talk. "Scott, I know that we have taken things kind of fast and if you're not ready to get married this soon then we can wait. But if you have doubts about us being together then I need to know. I don't want to lose you now, you're too important to me. You are the one who keeps me grounded. You remind me to stop once in a while and enjoy life. Before I met you all I did was work. I never just sat back and enjoyed things. I was headed fast for a burn out until I met you." He paused for a moment and I waited for him to continue. "You taught me how to appreciate the smallest things. Like when we went on that picnic. Scott that was one of the best evenings of my life only being topped by the night you agreed to marry me. You showed me how to live again. You appreciate the simplest things. I've noticed how you like to just walk around outside after everything is quiet and take everything in. You get lost and immerse yourself in whatever you are doing. That passion and vigor is what attracted me to you. I've never met anyone like you Scott and suspect I never will again. And if you feel like we should slow down then that's fine. And as much as it would break my heart if you feel that we should call it quits then just say the word and I'm gone. I love you Scott and I would do anything to be with you for the rest of my life. But if you don't feel the same then that's how it will be. Whatever you want Scott, because what I want doesn't matter. All that matters to me is you." he finished and I noticed that his face was wet with tears. "Baby, you are the most perfect person I have ever met and I thank god every day that he brought you to me, but I have been wrong about something. I have been blind and I haven't seen it until now. I have always pictured you as invincible. You never let anything get to you and it seems that nothing can bring you down. I thought that you would be able to do anything you wanted to and that nothing would stand in your way. But I was wrong. I realized one of the most important things tonight. You are as vulnerable as I am. When you looked at me and told me that you were scared that illusion I had of you shattered. I saw a vulnerable angel reaching out for me." I said with my arms wrapped around him. "I had some delusion that you were so sure of yourself and that you aren't nervous about us. I depend on you so much I can't imagine living one moment without you. I ache for you when we are apart and when we are together I lose myself in you. " I said standing up and walking away. "but there are some things that you need to know first." I studied Josh carefully making sure he wasn't angry for me keeping things from him. Once I saw that his expression had not changed I continued. "Ya see baby, I've worked so hard to get where I am today. I know I don't have much but it is mine. For a good portion of my life people have been trying to tell me what to do. My father always told me that I should have become a doctor. My mom wanted me to do what I wanted to but wouldn't stand up to my dad. Everyone else seemed to think that I should be a computer programmer. Then I enrolled in a phlebotomy class my junior year in high school and got to see what it was like working in a hospital lab. It became my passion and in two years at that technical school I had three certificates and I knew what I wanted to do with my life." I said fondly looking back on those days. "When I had done my clinical rotations I was good, actually I was damn good. So they gave me my first job. That first job was in the same hospital I was born in. I loved working there and miss it even today but it was just another step down the path. After that I enrolled at Marshall University and began taking my classes. Of course I did my share of drinking and partying and just being a college kid. I passed my first semester no problem. Then I started working doing telephone technical support for Dell. It wasn't fun to say the least. My studies suffered and I couldn't find the balance between work and school. So I failed a couple of classes and later on in the summer they fired me." I said then looked over at Josh who was grinning at me being fired, mental note; punish him later. "So I just basically hung out at my apartment over the summer and then in the fall I started doing collections for Sprint PCS. I had finally got back on track. The next three years went by like a blur. Working and studying and occasionally partying. I graduated with my BS in Medical Technology at the top of my class. I had finally reached my goal. So everyone came to Huntington for my graduation. After the ceremony then we were all sitting around my apartment when my phone rang and I just let the machine get it. BIG MISTAKE!! Turns out it was one of my friends that I had met at a bar. And he was a little bit of a flamer. So when my dad heard a guy say `congratulations baby' let's just say that he was less than happy. It then escalated into this big fight right there in my living room. I guess it wasn't the best way for him to find out that I'm gay but I don't think he would have reacted any better if I had sat him down and told him. "It was becoming harder and harder for me to talk as these weren't fond memories. "Eventually I had to ask them to leave. I saw the pained expression on my mom's face. She didn't know what to do so she just went with my dad and sister. I knew it was going to be like this. After that day I never spoke with my dad again, I was served papers stating that my name had been taken off of the deed to the house. My dad had taken these actions and the rest of the family just sort of played along. None of them were really bothered by the fact that I was gay but it was just easier if they went along with dad and talked to me infrequently. I talked to mom about once a week when she was at work. She told me how hard this had been on dad and I laughed. It went on like that for months. I was still doing collections and looking for job in a hospital. I finally found one here in Savannah, so I packed up and moved. I lived in a tiny one bedroom apartment while I worked. I worked long hours and the conditions were bad. They barely paid me enough to pay my bills. After I was there for two years I got a better and quit. I've been working there ever since. I still occasionally talk to my mom but I don't have much other contact with my family. It tapered off over the years and I just kept right on working. I worked harder there than I had anywhere else in my life and they paid me damn good." I said pacing around the table and the chair which I tended to do when I was talking. "So I eventually had enough money to buy this house and my car. I have always had the idea that if you want something and have the money then buy it. It was hard not being in contact with anyone familiar when I moved here but I eventually made friends. When I started working I made friends with the people at work and then I changed jobs. I have gotten very close with the people I work with. Especially Alicia and Rick, we are a pretty tight group. Anyway they decided after two years that I needed a boyfriend. So thus began the endless parade of guys which they thought would be good for me. I mean I love them both to death but they have no taste." I said the last part laughing and sat back down at the foot of the chair. "But I must admit that Rick was pretty creative about fixing me up. But he out did himself when he set me and you up and I haven't regretted a moment of it. So since I know you are getting tired of my ramblings I will cut to the chase. The reason that I told you about what I've been through and how much it took for me to get to here is for one simple reason. I would gladly give everything up and go through all of that again just to have you in my life for one more day." I said while the tears I had been holding back finally began to slide down my face. "So you asked me earlier if I had any doubts, well if you had asked me that 3 hours ago my answer would have been very different. But when I looked in your eyes while we were sitting by the pool, I saw how scared you looked and vulnerable. I knew at that moment if I was ever going to marry someone, then it has to be you." I said softly while looking up to meet his eyes with my own. "Oh Scott," Josh said while pulling me close. I buried my face in the crook of his neck and inhaled the scent that was distinctly him. I closed my eyes and imagined the two of us when we were older, standing here in this very backyard doing this exact thing. It was a nice picture. "Come on baby, let's go to bed," I said leading him in the house. We passed through the living room and we paused for a moment to look at the decorations. It was a unique feeling. Josh's arms around me, looking at the decorations around the room, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time. I felt at home. For most of the time that I had lived here it was a house. But being here with Josh, made it my home. We went upstairs and got ready and crawled between those cool satin sheets. Josh was snuggled up to my side and his breathing was beginning to slow down. He was asleep in a few minutes and I looked at his angelic face. My mind drifted back to years earlier, I would lay in my bed in my parents house and dream of a moment like this, being held at night by someone who knows you inside and out. Someone who captivates your thoughts and dreams, and loves you as much as you love him. This wonderful moment was shattered by the shrill ring of my cell phone laying on the nightstand. I quickly picked it up and answered it before it woke Josh. "Scott here," I said getting up to go downstairs. "Scott, thank god you're there." A relieved Alicia said. "Ok," I said having an idea of where this conversation was going. "We need you here, we are two people short and absolutely swamped," Alicia almost pleaded. "If you were any other person I would prolly hang up on you," I said going to the kitchen for a glass of tea. "So I'm guessing that you will be here soon?" she asked expectantly. "Give me a few minutes to shower and make sure Josh is still asleep and I'm on my way." I said while going back upstairs and getting a clean uniform out of the closet. "Thanks Scott," she said then hung up. I walked into the bathroom and muttered to myself that if they didn't pay me so well I would quit. Then I laughed thinking how much of a lie that was. Before I met Josh, that hospital was what I got up in the morning for. I never dreaded going to work and loved each minute of it. Well maybe not every minute, but that hospital was where I met my fiancé how could I not love it. Half an hour later found me clocking in at the hospital and I could already tell by walking the halls that something big had happened tonight because everyone was running around like mad to attempt to compensate for the understaffing. So I walked a little faster and into the lab. I checked with Alicia to see what was going on and she said there had been a big wreck on the interstate. I then went to the chemistry section and tried to get caught up on the work that was there to be done. * * * * * * * * (Josh's POV) I woke up and glanced over at the clock. It was 9 am and that's when I noticed that Scott wasn't in bed with me. I also noticed that his cell phone was missing, but in it's place was a note. I took the piece of paper in my hand and began to read Scott's hurried handwriting. Hey baby, I'm sorry that I'm not here to wake up with you. To be honest I am probably more ready for sleep depending on the time. They needed me at the hospital, and I know that you need me to but believe me baby I'm with you. Right now I'm there with you in bed still curled up asleep. But I have no idea what time I'll get back but you already know that what is mine is yours, just don't eat all my chocolate. Hopefully I'll see ya soon. Love Ya, Scott I smiled as I placed the note back on the nightstand and went to get a shower. After I had dressed in some jeans and one of Scott's shirts I went down to see what was in the kitchen. I noticed another note under the coffee pot and laughed out loud when I read it. I know how impatient you can be in the mornings so I set the coffee for 9. I poured a cup and went outside. It was a nice morning and I felt at home here in Scott's backyard. I hoped he wasn't working too hard. And knowing him he is working right through his breaks and isn't taking the time to eat anything. I had an idea and went back into the house to find my keys. (Scott's POV) "Damn machine," I said while trying to fix a program error. "Someone's not in a good mood this morning," Alicia said handing me a cup of coffee. "Well if you had to leave the most sexy, smart, funny, and sweet man there is, to come here and play with pee then you wouldn't be either." I said while taking a drink from my cup. "It sounds as if you two are getting serious." She said nonchalantly. I must have looked at her like she had grown a second head or something cause she eventually asked me, "What?" "Are you forgetting the news that I gave you when I got back from Jamaica?" I asked her unbelievingly. "On the night you got back?? I had a migraine that night and wasn't really concentrating on it much." She said truthfully. "Ohh yeah I remember now, we didn't talk long and I didn't tell you and hadn't thought about it until now." I said remembering. "Well don't keep me in suspense dammit tell me." She said. She obviously hadn't noticed the ring on my finger because we wore gloves in the lab and we hadn't seen one another outside of work since I had returned. I decided that it should be a little more interesting than me just telling her. "Well Josh decided while we were there that I needed some jewelry." I said knowing that this would drive her nuts. "Ok so what is it a ring??" she asked not getting the subtle hint. "Yeah, and I assume it's pretty expensive too." I said "Well let's see it," she said impatiently. So I took off my gloves and let her see the ring. "Oh god it's beautiful. And it looks like platinum." She said admiring it. "It is" I said easily. "Then it must be very serious" she said not even realizing what finger the ring was on. "Well it outta be, cause I don't just marry anyone." I said then stood back and waited that split second for it. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH you're kidding me, you mean that he asked you and you said yes and you're getting married?" she said talking animatedly. "Yeah, that's what I mean, I am marrying Josh and I have never been so sure of anything in all of my life." I said proudly. "Well how exciting, have you told Rick yet?" She asked. "No he's been on vacation since I got back and I'm not gonna disturb him, besides I already tried his home and cell numbers and he didn't answer. And I want to see the look on his face." I said. "Well Josh is certainly getting a good man," she said. "No I'm getting the good one," I said "You must be talking about me aren't ya," I heard a familiar voice say. I looked around and saw Josh leaning against a wall out of mine and Alicia's view. "I certainly am, now what are you doing here eavesdropping on me?" I asked walking up to him. "Well I know how wrapped up you tend to get and I thought you might need a little reminder to eat breakfast." He said wrapping his arms around my waist. We shared a short kiss before Alicia cleared her throat. I had kinda forgotten I was at work. "So let me get this straight, you came to have breakfast with me?" I asked. "Yep, and I don't appreciate that note about me being impatient in the mornings." He said playfully "Why not? It's true. I said receiving a playful slap on the ass. "You ready to eat baby?" he asked grinning. "Yeah, lets go wanna come Alicia?" I said turning to her. "And watch you two make goo goo eyes over bacon and eggs, nah I'll pass. Besides I already ate." She said laughing. So Josh and I went off to elevator to go down to the cafeteria. After we had finished we were on our way back up to the lab when I ran into one of my supervisors. "Hey Scott, I was just coming to find you," she said. "Well here I am, what'd ya need." I said. "Go home," she said flatly. "Ok," I said unsurely. "You've been here long enough to cover your shift today and tomorrow you are scheduled off so go on home and spend this beautiful day with your beautiful fiancé." she said grinning. "But how..." I started asking but was cut off. "Well when I heard Alicia scream this morning I knew it was something big so I came over there and heard you guys talking." She said. "Well it looks like you and Josh have something in common, you're both eavesdroppers." I said in mock aggravation. "Hey that's your word not mine. Anyway, I wanted to congratulate you both and wish you all the best, yada yada yada." She said, "but I wanna get a good look at that ring." I held out my hand and she whistled when she saw it. Josh was beaming from ear to ear. "Nice haul," she kidded me. "Yeah I know," I said receiving a jab in the ribs from Josh. "Anyway get your butt home and I'll see ya next Tuesday." She said. "Next Tuesday," I asked, "where are you gonna be until then?" "Oh yeah I almost forgot to tell ya, I am going to a conference in California. Which reminds me did Deb ask you if you could be the acting supervisor while we are gone?" she said quickly. "Of course she forgot to, but I'd be glad to do it. Does this mean that I get to sit at your desk?" I asked jokingly. "Just don't mess it up," she said, "and I appreciate it, you already know how to do the job so it's no problem right?" "Yeah no problem," I said. "Ok great, see ya later." She said walking off. Josh and I stood there for a minute before he spoke. "So you get to be the big boss next week?" he asked grinning. "Looks that way doesn't it," I said, "let's get outta here." Within an hour we were sitting on the patio just relaxing in the sun. It was by no means hot, but it was quite comfortable. We spent the entire day just hanging out and relaxing. I read a book and Josh was cat napping all day. I should have been more tired than I was but all day I was wide awake even after being up all night. It was late in the evening and Josh and I were sitting in the living room watching a movie. I was laying in front of him and he had his arm around me to keep me from falling off the couch. The movie was almost over and I was getting more and more sleepy I guess it was because the movie wasn't as interesting as we had hoped. As the end credits rolled Josh got up simultaneously pushing me into a sitting position. He walked over and turned off the TV and then came back over to the couch. "I know you are tired baby, let's go to bed " he said pulling me up. He was receiving no argument from me. All the lights were off and the doors were locked so we went upstairs and got ready for bed. As soon as I had finished in the bathroom I walked almost lifelessly to the bed and dropped between the sheets. Josh came out of the bathroom and switched out the light. Once he was snuggled up behind me I could drift off to sleep. "I love you baby," I said almost asleep. "I Love you too angel," he said, "goodnight." I was wrapped in the arms of the man I love. The man I am going to marry, and all is right with the world. To be continued... Okay go ahead and bitch at me for being so late putting this chapter out but I swear I just finished it tonight and I been working on it for a month. Please give me some feedback as well, but if you don't get a response don't be too mad, I'm just very busy with work and classes and trying to have a life. But I will try to respond, unless you are cuussin me out or something like that. TTFN Http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/storymaker19
