He's too emotional and reckless in the mood his in. He's hurt me deeply by what he has said, but I can understand him a little. As I suspected, he feels like he's at my mercy. It can't be easy for someone so proud. I run after him and my phone rings. I stop. It's Mark. Out of breath, I answer. "Hi Mark." "Am I interrupting something?" He asks. I don't know what he thinks he is interrupting but am sure it wouldn't what he's imagining. "No. No. Shoot!" "I found a job for Daniel at a smaller estate outside Paarl. (I have no idea where the fuck that is.) They need someone to host the tourists when they visit. They have actually seen him in action and would be delighted to have him work for them and the pay isn't that bad either. But they still want him to go for an interview on Tuesday. Will you organize it so that he can make it?" "Of course, I will. Thank you, Mark. That's the best news I've had all day. Please text me the details and I'll call you back later. I have to go and tell Daniel. He'll be so excited." And I disconnect the call and run after Daniel to tell him the good news. This is just what he needs to hear from me right now. Then he'll maybe stop with his crap. He must've slowed down because it doesn't take me long to spot him. He's still about fifty feet in front of me, at the bottom of the hill, and even though I'm not at full sprint, I'm catching up to him easily enough. As he reaches Victoria Road to turn, I don't know where, I yell after him. "Daniel! I just got ... off ... the ... phone ... with Mark. I ... have ... great ... news!" Yelling and running isn't a great combination. Daniel stops as he's about to go around the corner and turns to face me. Thank God. I increase my pace. But then ... As if in slow motion, I see a yellow sportscar behind him turn too wide to come up the road, we're in, and clip him on his left leg. He goes flying backwards and ends up in the middle of the road, where a SUV drives over him. His body disappears beneath the tires. "No! DANIEL!!!" I'm sure it's me screaming. Other people are also screaming and I sprint as if my fucking life depends on it, nearly falling over him when I reach him, trying desperately to stop my momentum. I drop to the ground and grab him, lifting his chest up from the tarmac, resting his back on my arm and holding his head up towards me. His eyes are flickering from shock and there's blood coming out of his nose and side of his head. He's nose is flat and twisted to one side. A pool is forming on his abdomen, which I can see through his T-shirt, and both his legs looks crushed. He opens his mouth to speak and blood starts pouring out of the corners, where his lips meet. "No! Please no, Daniel! Hold on, help is coming and I look up frantically and see various people, who are surrounding us, on their phones. It sounds as if they're talking to the emergency services and I look back down at Daniel and he's trying to say something. But, the blood in his mouth and throat is drowning his attempts to do so. I hold him as tight as I can, without doing it too hard. "I love you, Daniel. Please hold on, help is on its way." Suddenly, his body goes into convulsions. He shakes violently and then just as abruptly, he goes completely limp in my arms. I look into his eyes and they slowly glaze over. He's completely still. Daniel's gone ... I feel something rip inside my chest and everything, our love and our possible future dies in in that moment. "Daniel! Daniel! Oh, Daniel! Why?!" I sob uncontrollably and someone sits down next to me on their haunches and tries to comfort me. I briefly glance at him. It's an old man and he has his arm round my shoulders. "Let is out son. I'm terribly sorry for your loss. He must've been someone very special to you." I weep even louder. My Daniel! Gone! *** What happens next is like a daze. They let me join him in the ambulance to take him to the hospital. The sirens aren't even on, because there's no point. He's dead. I'm just numb and confused, by knowing what has just happened and not believing it. How could he be dead?! At the hospital emergency room, the on-call doctor declares him dead and the attendants take his body off to the morgue. The cops arrive and asks me a ton of questions, which I answer as best I can and I text Mark, `Daniel is dead'. Mark phones me immediately, asks me where I am and tells me his on his way over and that I should stay put. I do as he says. He arrives sometime later and gives me a huge hug. We walk off to the hospital canteen and sit down and drink what must be the worst fucking cup of coffee of my life. It must be from one of the vending machine. But, I don't care and just sip it listlessly. Letting the acid like liquid burn my throat and stomach. I tell him that we need to inform his parents and Mark says he'll take care of it, before he convinces me to leave the hospital and take me back to the hotel. At the hotel, Mark takes the initiative and informs the desk of Daniel's death, but they already know. Someone must've heard or seen the commotion down the road when it had happened, and so the stares I get from them, are all full of sympathy and understanding. When I specifically look at the receptionist, she bursts out crying. I don't need this crap now. I'm to numb and don't really give a flying fuck on how she's feeling. Mark realizes that this isn't helping and quickly leads me upstairs to my room and makes sure I'm sitting down on my bed, before he leaves me. "I'll call you later to check up on you." He promises and I simply nod. *** I fall back onto my bed into a semi-comatose state and just stare at the sun going down outside my window. The stars eventually appear and I fall in and out of sleep the entire night, nightmares of Daniel's death playing over and over in my head. until I lie awake, waiting for the sun to rise. Mark had texted me, asking if I was ok, sometime during the night and I simply replied with a `yes'. But my stomach tells me I have to get some food into my stomach. I don't want to eat, though. Suddenly, Mark texts me that he's at my door and I get up and let him in. I'm still dressed in the same clothes with Daniel's bloodstains all over my shirt and shorts. There's even dried blood on my arms, legs and cheeks. He's carrying a breakfast tray but when he notices the way I look, he puts the tray down. "Strip! Let's get you cleaned up. You look like shit." I reluctantly obey and start undressing. Removing all my clothes until I'm standing completely naked, facing him. He grabs my hand and leads me to the bathroom and turns on the shower. When he's happy the water's warm enough, he turns to me. "Get in." I comply and he rolls up the sleeves of his formal white shirt and starts washing me. He's halfway in the shower and the water spray is starting to splash onto his clothes. "Turn around." And he washes my back and legs. When done, he steps back out. "You better wash yourself down there. I'm not doing it." He points at my cock and I comply, washing my ass as well. Next, I wash my hair and then he rinses me off with the hand shower and pulls me out of the cubicle and dries me off. I dry my cock, orbs, banus and ass by myself before he leads me back into the room. "Now, get dressed. You look much better." I see he's disposed of the clothes I'd worn, but I don't ask. I just grab a pair of shorts and put on a black T-shirt. The latter, matching the way I'm feeling. "Now. Sit down and eat your breakfast." I do as he says, wanting to vomit, but manage to keep it down. My body needs the sustenance. After I'm done, I turn to him to see what else he wants me to do. He comes up close to me and takes my face into his hands and stares straight into my eyes. "Not that I'm not willing or able to take care of you. You are a grown man James and you will get over this. I'm terribly sorry for your loss and I know you loved him. You wanted to build a life with him here, but this is what it is. He's gone and you need to pick up the pieces and go on with your life. You understand what I'm saying to you?" I simply nod. Seemingly happy with my response, he continues. "I'm going to go now because I have to meet Daniel's parents at the airport and take them to see his body. I'll call you later." I nod again and he leaves.
