Maybe you could take me home?" I tried not to let the disappointment I felt out in my voice. "Sure thing." I said. We both got out of the water. I tried to not stare at his body, but it was difficult. I went to put my clothes on but remembered I was soaking wet. Brad said, "Damn. I didn't think about how we were suppose to dry off." "No worries. I'm pretty sure I have an emergency blanket it my car." I started to walk to my car, turning around to look at Brad. "And no staring at my ass!" He looked sheepish for a second but then broke into a huge grin. I managed to find the blanket in my trunk and made my way back to the pond. "You can either take it and dry off first or we can share. It's up to you." I said as I held it up for him. He took the blanket and started to towel off with it. "Rats!" I was hoping we could dry off together. Oh well. He handed the blanket to me and got dressed. I caught myself staring again. 'Dammit Jessie. You're gonna get him all creeped out. Knock it off.' Well he's freakin' hot. Who could blame me? I got dressed too and we made our way to my car. We sat there in silence for most of the drive back to his apartment. A thousand thoughts were going through my mind all at once. 'What if he ditches you when he finds out? He'll never be able to love a crazy person. You should just nip this in the bud before it becomes more serious.' Would you shut up?! I know all this but I really like him and he likes me. So butt the hell out already and leave me be. Bastard voice in my head. Always trying to fuck shit up for me. I was shaken out of my self-conversation when Brad spoke. "I had a wonderful time tonight, Jessie. Maybe we can hang out again tomorrow?" "I'd like that. Do you have anything in mind?" He grinned. "Pick me up tomorrow at 7." "Do I even get a hint as to what we're gonna be doing?" "Nope. Just be at my apartment at 7, sharp." Oh lord. I think I should be afraid. I dropped Brad off, giving him a quick hug goodnight and drove the rest of the way to my house. It was a great night. My phone started buzzing as soon as I pulled into the driveway. "Hi Shelia." "Hey Jesse. How was the movie?" "I wouldn't know. I spent the entire time in my head, ruminating on bullshit." "Aw. Well that just means you and I can see it together. And since you're not all lovey dovey with me, you can focus on the movie." "You're right. We'll make plans for next weekend maybe." "Maybe. So. How was swimming in the pond?" That's it. I need to hire a private investigator. She's having me tailed. I know it. "Jesus, Shelia. You need to quit that. You're starting to freak me out." I sigh. "It was awesome. I got to see him naked, and he knew about it." "Oooh! Tell me! Tell me! How big is he?" "No. I'm not telling you anything about his dick. At least until we become official." "You're no fun. Wait. Are you thinking that you two will become official?" "There's a chance. He said he liked me and couldn't stop thinking about me. Shelia, I think I'm falling head-over-heels for this guy. With him, I forget all about Joey." "Wow sweetie. I'm glad to hear that. It's about time you got over that douche bag." "Yeah. I don't wanna rush things though. He's taking me out tomorrow but won't tell me where. I'm nervous and excited, all at the same time." "I'm excited for you. You better call me and let me know how it goes." "Oh I'm sure you'll have found out before me. You seem to know everything." "Now Jesse, that's not true. Okay sweetie. I've gotta go. Good niiiight." "Night, Sheila." I get out my car and head in to the house. I just wish this nagging feeling would go away about what Brad might think of me when he finds out. I'm being crazy about this. It's hard telling people. Kind of like coming out. You never know how people are going to react. I crawl into bed, not bothering with anything else and pass out. I'm soon brought back to consciousness by the ringing of my alarm clock. Oh man. I'm going out with Brad again. Maybe I should call him to see if he'll be a little more forthcoming today with detail about what we're doing tonight. Nah. I'm actually content with letting it remain a mystery. 'What to do in the meantime' I ask myself. I should be looking for work. My savings won't last forever. I fire up the laptop and begin another arduous search for employment. A listing catches my eye. "Needed: Experienced Sous-chef for immediate hire. Must have 1-3 yrs experience in the culinary field. Please send your resume to hrmanager@austinsresturant.com" What the hell. There's no harm in sending it. The worst they can do is say no. I send it off with my fingers crossed. 'Well that's enough of that for today'. I spend the rest of the afternoon watching some youtube videos, killing time before I need to get ready. My cellphone buzzes. "Hello?" "Hello Jesse. It's your mother." 'Oh fuck. Not this shit again'. Why can't she get the hint to leave me alone? "Hi mom. How are you today?" "I'm fine. I was calling to see what plans you had for this evening." "Well, I actually have a sort of date tonight." "Really. With whom?" Did you hear that shit? She sounds all condescending. "You wouldn't know him. We used to work together at the diner." "Please don't tell me that degenerate boss of yours fired you." "No mother. I quit. I had had enough of him and not wanting to fix anything." "Finally. Now maybe you can become what you were always meant to be." This just got interesting. "And what's that?" "Never mind. Well if you're too busy tonight we'll have to set something up for later in the week. Goodbye Jesse." Fucking guilt trip! "Goodbye mother." Ha! She hates it when I use my sarcastic voice on her. It was 5:30 and I hadn't even started getting ready yet. I dashed into my room and swung the closet doors open to find an outfit for tonight. No telling what to wear since I have no clue where were going. I settle on a simple button shirt and a pair of khakis. 'I hope I'm not overdressing for this'. I grab my clothes and make my way to the bathroom. Quick shower and shave and I'm ready entirely too early. Damn. I decide to watch some more youtube before I have to leave. I pulled up to Brads at 6:58. He was already walking towards my car. I notice that he's dressed similarly to me. Thank the stars. I unlock the door for him and he climbs in. "Excited for tonight?" I ask him. "Yeah but I walked out cause I knew you'd be early." He smirked at me. Well he caught me. I've been excited for this since last night. "So are you finally gonna tell me where we're going?" feigning exasperation. "No but you can punch this address into your GPS." Dammit! So close. So I do. It's a bit of a drive, but I don't mind. It gives me a chance to make small talk with Brad and spend some one-on-one time with him. Except he didn't seem very talkative. I'd try to strike up a conversation but he would only give short replies or one word answers. 'Maybe he's just nervous'. I hope so. It would suck for things to be over between us before they'd even started. About 45 minutes later we pull up to a house. There are a few cars parked outside and obviously some sort of shindig is going on. "Where are we?" "The house belongs to some friends. They're having a little get together tonight. I wanted you to meet them." Oh my gosh. That's probably why he wasn't saying much he's been thinking about how his friends were going to react to me. "Well what are we waiting for?" I get out of the car and he follows. We make our way to the door, walking side-by-side and he reaches out and grabs my hand. My heart leapt into my throat and I got butterflies In my stomach. The world could end right now and I would die happy. Brad rings the bell and the door swings open. There's a very tall, thin man standing there. "Brad!" He grabs Brad into a big hug and nearly squeezes the life out of him. A woman walks up behind him and pokes his back. "David! Let him go! You'll smother him!" He lets him go and I put my hand on Brads back to steady him. "Sorry about that! I just got carried away. I feel like I haven't seen you in forever." David practically yells. The woman chimes in again. "It's only been 2 weeks. You didn't need to try and knock him unconscious." Brad finally regains is composure and introduces me. "Samantha, David. This is Jesse. He's the once I've been telling you about." David walks over and tries to put the same squeeze he had on Brad on me but Samantha scolds him. It ended up not being so bad. Then she comes over and gives me a much lighter hug. "It's so nice to meet you. Brad has been talking about you almost non stop since coming out to us." I look over at him and his face has turned red. Adorable. David pipes up. "Well come on into the house you two. There's more people to meet and plenty of food to go around." We follow him in and my nose is filled with scents of roast chicken and garlic potatoes. I even see someone put a cherry cobbler into the oven. I try not to drool at the site. Brad comes up beside me and lays his head on my shoulder and whispers into my ear. "That went a lot better than I had anticipated." My heart starts fluttering again at the physical contact with Brad. 'I'll say'. This is going to be a great evening.
