Dec 9, 1903 Pocatello Boy Chapter 12 The next morning Joe woke before the boys again and rolled over Cary this time to get up and take a piss. He then went to the kitchen and saw that it was 7am. Only two hours before he had to have both boys at Betty's for their exam battery. He decided to start breakfast. He whipped up some batter and made pancakes which he kept stacking in the oven until there were about a dozen then he went to the bedroom and called out, "Rise and shine me lads. It is time to eat." As they stirred they began stretching and yawning and both finally hit the floor. Joe said, "Put on some briefs and come on to the dinning room I have made some pancakes for you." The boys followed orders and it wasn't long before the three of them were downing pancakes like there was no tomorrow. Joe said, "As soon as you finish boys I want you to shower as quickly as possible then go to your own bedrooms where your new clothes are and wear some of your nice clothes for today OK?" "OK Joe." They both responded. In about 5 more minutes they were finished and helped Joe with the dishes as usual and headed for the shower in Joe's bedroom. They liked that shower as it had the two heads going at once and it felt better. Besides it was faster. When they finished the shower they both headed for their bedrooms to get dressed. Meanwhile Joe was dressing himself real nice for the eventful day. When it was 8:30 Joe directed the boys to get in the car, not the van, as he wanted to use it today. Joe went out with them and started the engine as the garage door opener was raising the door. He backed the car out to make it easier for the boys to get in. When they were in he closed the door and backed on out. He turned toward the college where they were to meet up with Betty. When they got there they were a little early so they talked in the car for a few minutes. Joe said,"Remember to do your best on these test boys as they are meant to place you in the proper classes if necessary for your GED exam. Sometimes you have to take prep classes before you take the GED to give you a better chance to pass the GED." Both boy agreed they would do their best. So Joe got out and signaled them to follow him. Down the same hall to her office and they arrived about 5 minutes to 9. Betty smiled as they walked in and welcomed them to her office once again. She said, "Good morning Joe I see the boys are right on time and my look at them. You boys are dressed fit to kill." They both blushed a little at that remark and Cary spoke up and said, "Gee thanks Betty we have Joe to thank for all the nice clothes." She said she knew that and that he was one fine man to be helping them out like he was. "Now boys you will be taking your exam in a small classroom by yourselves. There will be no talking during the exam needless to say. The exam should take up to three hours by the time you finish all the sections. What I am going to do is give you the actual GED exam and see if you can pass it without further schooling. I guess we will know more when you finish. Joe you need not wait around as they can call you when they are finished and you can come and pick them up OK?" "Sounds good to me Betty I was wondering what I was going to do with myself for all that time." "Well then I will say good by for now Joe, and will you boys follow me down the hall a short way to the room I have already set up for you to take the exam." Well that was about it for Joe so he returned to his car and decided to just go home and wait for the call. When Joe got home he turned on boring daytime TV and lay down on the couch and soon dozed off. He was awakened by the telephone. He got up and answered it fully expecting it to be the boys. "Hello Joe, this is Alice." "Oh Hello Alice, I didn't expect to be hearing from you so soon." "Well Joe it's about a boy named Tony. He has just turned 17 and has been in 5 foster homes. His parents were killed in a tragic auto crash last year. He just doesn't seem to fit in anywhere. I thought that since you already had two boys near his age he would have a better chance of making it in one piece to age 18 as any. Would you consider adding him to your flock?" "Gosh Alice I don't even have to give it a second thought. As you know since I sold my business and lost my wife I have felt like a man without a cause. So as I told you when I saw you I have 5 bedrooms to fill and I want to fill them with boys 17 and 18 preferably that need a helping hand getting started in life. I have more than enough money to last 5 guys my age to live in a high lifestyle so money is no object either." "I was hoping you would say that Joe. I was very impressed and of course your back ground check is as clean as a whistle which is the type of home we like to place children in. When would you be able to accept him in your home Joe?" "Well whenever you are ready to make the move Alice it really doesn't matter to me at all." "In that case would this afternoon around 4 be OK?" Joe swallowed kinda hard and then said, "Sure Alice today is as good a day as any." "I might mention to you Joe that you may not find him to be as cooperative as the two you have now after being placed in 5 different homes sometimes for behavior reasons." "Alice might I remind you I raised four of my own, and I can't say it was always a picnic around my house either. I think I can handle him." "Oh I was hoping you would say that Joe. And Joe thank you so much for helping me out of a kinda jam." "Don't think about it Alice. I am glad I can be of help to you but mainly I want to do my best to be of help to the boy." "You are some special person Joe I can say that. Then I will bring him by myself around 4. "That will be fine Alice, Good by." "Good by Joe." Joe hung up the phone and sat there in sort of a shock state. Things were happening so fast could he keep up with it all. Then he thought about the years when his family was all home and how he had managed to live through those years and said to himself, Sure I can handle it. Pour it on. Just then the phone rang again. Joe felt like answering, Grand Central Station How May I Help You, but he caught himself and just said hello. It was Cary saying they had both finished their exams and Betty was grading them. He then told Joe he could come now if he could. Joe said, "You bet sport. I'll be there in about 10 minutes." With that he said good by, went to the couch and put on his shoes, and left to go get in the car. There was a little more traffic getting there and it was a little harder to find parking but finally he walked down the hall and into Betty's office. Hello Betty. How did the guys do on their test?" Well I have excellent news Joe Cary passed all of his exams and is now a high school equivalent graduate. Todd did almost as well but will have to take the math section again. He only missed it by 10 points so he will need some help there. Joe spoke up and said, "I had a major in math Betty. If you will give me some problems to have him to to brush up his math I will be glad to help him with it." Betty was happy to hear that as it made things a lot easier for her too. "I will reschedule another exam at the beginning of the month say on the 2nd at 9am." That falls on a Tuesday will that be OK Joe?" "That will be fine Betty that will give him 10 days or so to study it over and I will help him. Just provide me some materials to use if you can." "Yes Joe this is the math study manual. The answers are in the back for your convenience to check his work." "Fine Betty we will get right on it." With that he took the manual and the boys and said good by to Betty and that he would see her on the 2nd at 9. They returned to the car and since it was lunch time Joe asked what they would like to eat. They both agreed on a big mac attack. So Joe stopped at the hamburger place and they got out and went in to order and eat inside as Joe did not like food and mess brought into his nice car. When they got their order and got to a table Joe let them finish eating before he hit them with the news of a new brother in our house. "Boys, Alice called me this morning, you remember her from the Children Services Agency don't you?" "Yea Joe," Todd piped up. She is the one that made you my father." "Joe laughed at that, and said yea I guess she did do that. Well Alice has a boy who just turned 17 whose parents were killed in a tragic auto accident last year. He has been in 5 foster homes since then and hasn't worked out good in any of them. Alice thinks he might fit in better in our house. What do you guys think about that?" Cary spoke first, "Gosh Joe both Todd and I know what it's like to loose parents one way or another. We should be able to help him out if anyone could." "I thought that is what you would say. So I told Alice we would give him a try. She is going to bring him to our house at 4 this afternoon." "Wow! Thats fast moving," Todd chipped in. "That isn't all there is to the story. Alice said he was a problem at the other 5 homes. She didn't elaborate on what kind of problem but I guess we will find out this afternoon won't we?" "I think the three of us can handle him Joe," Cary spoke up. Todd chipped in after looking around to be sure he couldn't be overheard and asked, "What about our sex lessons with him around?" "We will find a way even if it is after he turns in. My bedroom door has a lock on it and we can use it if necessary but hopefully it won't be." Cary said, "With Joe around I don't think it will be too long before he gets indoctrinated." Joe said, "Well we will just have to wait and see what happens." With that they had finished so they went back to the car and on home. All with anticipation of what 4pm might bring them. When they got home around 1:30 Joe asked the boys to join him in the living room. "OK we are going to have house meetings starting when the new arrival gets here. that way you guys can help me with any problems he might start up. You have more experience in living situations that were unfavorable than this kid will hopefully ever have to see. You can help me nail him to the wall if he decides to try to make life unpleasant for any of us. So I guess what I am asking is that you feel free to voice your opinions whenever you think they would help." "OK Joe we can do that can't we Cary," Todd spoke up. "After all I have had more street experience that even Cary has. I know the horrors of that world quite well." "Yes, I suppose you do Todd." Said Joe. "Thanks for your offer of help." Cary spoke up and said, "Don't worry Joe you have us on your side 100%." With that Joe closed the meeting and told the boys to feel free to do as they pleased until the boy got there. "However if you decide to go swimming please use your new suits as I wouldn't want Alice or the new boy to think any thing bad about this situation." "I understand fully Joe." Said Cary. "Lets go put on our suits Todd and then go take a swim." Joe said, "I'm going to vacuum the house and dust to make everything look good for Alice's arrival." "We could do that Joe." Piped up Todd. "NO boys you have had quite a day already go enjoy yourself I need to do something to keep my nerves in tact." "You are a little nervous too huh Joe?" "Well boys that is what the definition of fear and anxiety is. It is the unknown that brings up these feelings." "Yea I guess we are a little nervous too Joe." "Don't worry boys remember united we stand, divided we fall." The boys both laughed and went to put on their suits. Joe in the meantime got out the Pledge and started dusting every thing in sight. Then he got out the vacuum and started in. The house was large enough it took him almost until 4 to finish it up. He put the vacuum away and collapsed on the couch reaching for the remote, he turned on the TV to the news channel. Joe could always be interested in what was happening in the world. At 4:05 the doorbell rang. Joe took in a deep breath and went to the door. There stood Alice and Tony. Joe invited them in and asked if they would like anything to drink. Alice piped right up and said, "No Joe I really don't have time to socialize right now I am still working so let me introduce you to Tony. Tony this is Joe Cazma, and he will be your foster father until you turn 18 and decide what you want to do on your own as an adult." "Welcome aboard Tony do you have any clothes to bring in?" "Oh yes Tony why don't you go out to the car and bring in your bag I almost forgot in all the rush to be on time." Tony grumbled a few things under his breath and went back out to Alice's car and brought in a paper sack. "Is that all he has?" "Alice said, I'M afraid that is about it Joe." "Well don't worry about it Tony we will get you some nice things to wear." With that Alice thanked Joe for his help and turned to go to her car and leave. "Well Tony come on I'll show you to your bedroom to put your clothes away. It will be one of three bedrooms still left on the second floor." They went up the stairs, Tony still not uttering a word, and Joe showed him the bedrooms available. He decided on the one furthest down the hall which struck Joe as odd but he just passed it off. The boy didn't look filthy like the others had as obviously he had facilities where he came from. "How does this suit you Tony." "Fine." Was all he said. "OK when you are through putting away your clothes come on back to the living room and we can talk a little. By the way do you have a bathing suit for swimming, I have a pool. That's where the other two boys are right now." "You have a pool?" "Yes Tony when you come down I'll show it to you. Again he asked him if he had a bathing suit?" "No I don't have many clothes those people they kept putting me with just made me do all the work around the house and never really bought me anything." "Well that will be different here Tony as one of the first things I will do is see that you are outfitted with a wardrobe so that you can feel comfortable no matter where we go." "OK thanks, I'll be down in a minute." Joe returned to the living room still a little nervous about Tony who certainly wasn't very verbal yet. When Tony came down he wanted to see the pool. He had no bathing suit so he was still dressed like when he came in the door. I took him to the pool where Todd and Cary were wrestling in the shallow end. "That is some pool Mr..." He got stopped right there. "No mister to it Tony either Joe or Dad which ever you choose since I guess I am your new foster dad." "OK then Joe, like I was saying that is really some pool. What with the lighting on the walls and in the pool it looks like some kind of resort." "I'm glad you like it Tony." Let me call the boys out so you can meet them. "Todd...Cary, could you get out and dry off, I want you to meet Tony our new resident." With that they both jumped out grabbed a towel and dried off. Joe said, "Bring your towels with you boys so you can sit on the furniture with out getting it wet with chlorine." They all went into the living room. Joe introduce them all to each other. After introductions were over Cary spoke up and said, "Hey! We have been waiting all day to meet you." This seemed to please Tony. Tony said, "Yea this place is sure a hell a lot better than the fucking holes they put me in before. They sent me to a school full of fagots it was terrible." Boy he stepped overboard with those remarks. Todd spoke right up and said, "Tony we are boys off the street and when we came here we used that same kind of language but Joe taught us that if we offend just one person by using it it one too many. So we agreed not to swear around any adults and that includes Joe." Then Cary spoke up and said, "Yea and we don't use the high school words to put others down either like fagot, dike, lesbian etc. All those words were invented for is to make other people feel bad about their sexual orientation and that is really none of our business. Joe then said, "Yes Tony we are here to make every one feel equal and words like fagot etc. certainly don't make anyone feel equal. Something else you should know is that just about every man has looked at another man in the shower and wished he could touch him and that certainly doesn't make him a fagot. I raised 4 kids and I still had those thoughts. So lets start off even and forget those kind of words even exist. People who like people of their own sex can't help it any more than you can help which sex you prefer. Your just born that way." Tony didn't quite know what to say after all that except. "I'm sorry I won't cuss or use those words any more. I guess you are right Joe I must admit I have looked at guys in the shower too." "Well I guess we got that out of the way now lets discuss tomorrow. In the morning we will be going to Ross' Department store for men and getting you some clothes Tony. The boys can help me out as they have both already been through the experience." "Tony said. "Gee I didn't expect anything like this Joe." "These boys came off the street and both of them lost their parents too. Not all of them died but some did. Anyway they landed out on the street not knowing where there next meal was coming from. When I met Cary I invited him to spend the night and he has been here ever since. He just finished passing his GED exam today and will be continuing on with a trade school or college which I will pay for for him. I sold a business and retired so I have plenty of money and time to help all the boys who stay here if they so desire. I will do the same for you Tony if that is what you decide to do." "Gosh I never expected anything like this. I'm sorry you guys had to stay out on the street. Where did you sleep?" "Card board boxes old blankets and an occasional sleeping bag. We just landed in a squat, that is where a lot of homeless people sleep usually under a bridge or some place like that. As far as what we ate. Some days we didn't get any thing to eat and other days through garbage cans and people giving us a handout, like Joe did to me. Joe gave me $5.00 to let him rub my back and let me tell you that was the best back rub I ever had." explained Cary. "Yea he gave me one of those when I first got here and it was so awesome. You have to try and talk him into giving you one Tony." (To be continued) Emails put gas in my writing tank. Please let me hear from you. sgtxray@mail.com
