Senior Year of a Young Mutant

Chapter 10: Reunion

I don't think shock is strong enough a word to define what I was feeling right then. Such a huge mixture of questions was circling through my head right now. How could it be that Kevin was alive? If this were really Kevin, why didn't he tell me he was alive? Did Remy have something to do with this? I really didn't know what to think. And then Remy was here, obviously putting the moves on my brother. Why wouldn't he alert me that my brother was alive? The more questions I came up with in my mind, the angrier I became at the both of them.

Not that I was really into hearing anything that either of them could possibly say right now, but I at least wanted to hear one of them say something. At least it would prompt me to yell at them. But instead, both of them seemed shocked as well. Remy kept looking back and forth from me to Kevin, trying to sense some sort of reaction.

"Hi baby bro," Kevin said, looking at the floor. I wish I had access to my telepathic powers so I could at least sense what he was feeling, but I couldn't. I didn't know what to think right now. "How you been?"

"You're alive," I stated simply.

"Yeah, I am," he replied.

I expected some more of a response than that, but nothing? I looked to Remy, then back to him. "How long? How long have you been alive?"

He seemed to think about it for a while, then replied "Since maybe 20 minutes or so after you killed me."

"And you didn't come back to Xavier's? You didn't come to try and find me. Why?"

Kevin didn't answer, just looked down at the floor. What was he so guilty of? Did he not want to come back? Did he not want to be bothered with me? My anger rose because of the questions.

"Look, mon ami, give Kevin some time, he'll tell you—"

"Are you the reason why he didn't come back, Remy? You just drop Rogue like a bad habit and move on to the next person? That's it, isn't it? You used your charm power on my brother to persuade him to stay with you, so that he wouldn't come back home to me, isn't it?" I asked him, now furious.

"Is that true?!" Kevin looked at Remy, a look of shock on his face as well.

"No! I'd never—"

"So you expect me to believe that? After the concierge? And the valet? Oh my god, and convincing me to stay with you!"

"No, chere, I swear to God, I didn't do that!!"

I was unbelieveably pissed right now. I had Logan tear out my heart and stamp on it, and now Remy had done the same to Rogue, and was using my brother to do it. No, I was beyond pissed. I was beyond angry. And I'd make sure that Remy paid for it.

"Stop lying to us!!" I shouted, slamming him against the wall with my telekinesis. "You're using your charm power to affect my brother, to bed my brother?!! How could you!"

"I'm not, I swear to you! I only tried to comfort him, and I...I like him okay, really like him!!"

"Shut up! Stop lying! You just wanted to get into my brother's pants!"

"That not true!"

"That is true!" I lifted him telekinetically by his throat.

"How could you?" I heard Kevin say, tears flowing down his face.

"This isn't me!! I swear to you, I didn't! Kevin, remember when we first met? When we save each other from Athena? When we got on that jet, you were the one who said that you didn't want to see Josh because you didn't know how he'd react to you being alive!"

"STOP THE LIES!!" I shouted, slamming Remy harder against the wall.

"No, Josh...he's telling the truth," replied Kevin. I looked at him, gauging him. Did he really mean it? Did he say that. I could tell he was serious. But I couldn't believe that he would be afraid of how I would react to him being alive. In fact, I wouldn't believe it.

"You probably only said that because you were already under his influence," I replied. "It's the only way that he could convince you to go with him, even convincing you to be with guys."

"What? Josh, I told you I was bisexual right before I died," he replied. Had he? It didn't matter.

"It doesn't matter. He's going to pay for what he did." I replied, strangling Remy further.

"Josh, calm down. I think he's telling the truth. Let him down," he said.

"No! He will pay! I will make sure that he pays!" I replied, tightening my grip.

"Joshua, no! He didn't do it! Calm down!" he said, laying a hand on me.

He was taking his side? He must somehow still have a hold on Kevin! "No, he must pay!!" I said, shaking him off me. "Release your hold on my brother, now!!"

"Joshua, what's gotten into you?" Kevin asked.

"He must pay. They all must pay!" I replied without looking at him.

"Joshie, something must be wrong with you?"

"Wrong with me? What's wrong with you? You've seen the true him, and you're going to take his side? Don't be so stupid and naïve, Kevin!"

"Okay, seriously lil' bro, you need to cool it! Stop and let Remy go now! You're killing him!"

"Lying, deceitful, backstabbing men like Remy deserve to die!" I replied, the anger in me burning now, and I accentuated my last statement by pulling off small particles of Remy's skin from his face.

"Josh no! Stop this!" Kevin said, grabbing me roughly. I shook him off again, pelting him backward into the wall behind me with telekinetic force. I couldn't have my brother's clouded judgment get in my way. Remy would pay. I pulled some more skin off him, causing him to shout out in agony this time.

"That's right, scream! No one will help you! Arrggh!" I shouted out in pain, as I felt something hit the back of my neck hard, making me lose concentration. I turned to see my brother, fear in his eyes.

"I don't want to fight you, lil' bro," he said, fear evident on his face, though I couldn't feel it I could smell it.

"Too late for that now," I replied, angrier than ever, as I kicked him in the chest. I couldn't let Remy's clouding of my brother's mind get in the way of stopping me. If it meant that I had to fight him to knock some sense into him so be it.

The force of my kick caused him to fall backward on the floor. He kicked out, though, swinging his legs to knock mine from under me. Simultaneously, we both flipped back up to our feet. I immediately spun and tried to kick him in the face, but he caught my foot, slammed it to the floor, and punched me, first in the chest, then the face, then kicked me hard enough to make me hit the wall.

I had had enough. I pushed at Kevin with my telekinesis, sending out a strong telekinetic beam, which he blocked with one of his shadow forcefields. With some added effort, I broke past his shield, and slammed him into a wall.

I then lifted him again the wall, and with ease formed a psychic claw, this time of telepathy, aiming it for his skull. "Must I kill you again to get you to see reason?" I said.

"You want me to see reason? Look at yourself, Joshua!" he said in reply. "Lil' bro, last time we fought, Hades gave you no choice but to kill me. I'm not Hades, and I'm not trying to fight you, I don't want to hurt you. And you want to kill me?"

His words hit me in the heart, and I looked at myself. He was right! What was I becoming?! I quickly powered down the psionic blade, and looked at my hand...a golden glove? No! Not again! I ran into the bathroom, looked in the mirror...and myself as a Dark Phoenix stared back again.

"No! Not again!!" I shouted, and I concentrated on calming myself, but my fear was overwhelming me.

"It's okay, Joshie, I'm here now," I heard Kevin say as he wrapped his arms around me. This time, I let go, leaning into my brother's hug, and with his support, I finally calmed my anger, now replaced with fear. Fear of what I had become, fear of what I almost did to him, and...Remy?!

"Oh my God, what have I done! Remy---!"

"I'm alright, mon ami. No harm done," Remy replied from the doorway, albeit hoarsely.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry!" I kept repeating. Kevin kept hugging me, and I leaned into him, and finally the dam burst and I cried into his arms, and my clothing changing back to civilian clothes from that costume of rage.

After I had finally calmed down enough, I was able to tell Kevin and Remy what had happened back home, what with Apocalypse raping me, and what Logan did to me.

"So that's why you're so angry," Kevin replied. "Don't worry, lil' bro. We're going to find that asshole Apocalypse and make him pay for what he did."

"Easy big bro, I don't want you to make a scene like I just did," I replied.

"Joshua, dis is serious," Remy said. "You need to tell Xavier what happened. This is twice you turn into d' Dark Phoenix."

"I know. I know. I've got to. And I will." I knew I had to. I didn't want things to turn out the way they had when Jean went Dark Phoenix. The results of her transformation would haunt the senior team for the rest of their lives. And speaking of lives...

"So Kevin, not being insensitive, but how is it that you're alive anyway? I'm very happy that you are alive, but how is it possible?"

"Being honest, I don't completely know. I met this guy Devin the other night. He told me that I was some kinda Immortal or something."

"Wait, you met another guy?" I asked, intrigued, looking at Remy.

"We went to Paula's. While I chased after Tessa, who was also there with some white-haired guy, this blond named Devin put the moves on Kevin," Remy replied hoarsely.

"Sounds like a cute couple, Devin and Kevin," I joked.

"Yeah, I thought the same before he tried to kill me," Kevin replied. "He attacked me with a sword, and I think he was trying to take my head."

"Your head?!" I replied. Oh my God, he was THAT kind of Immortal! I'd had to study Immortals, along with many other mystical beings and creatures.

"Yeah. What, what's wrong Joshua?"

"This isn't good. When Devin approached you, did you get a weird sense, like you may be in danger?"

"Yeah, I did. Wait, was he telling the truth? He mentioned something about a game, I can't remember exactly."

"THE Game," I replied. "It explains why you are indeed alive. Anyone can kill you now, but you won't die. Not unless you're head is taken."

"Okay, you're scaring me. What are you talking about."

"You are an Immortal," I began to explain. "You are one of many people who has been born with an amazing ability to live forever. You also age at a much slower rate than anyone. You'll probably look the same as you do now for the next 5 centuries at least."

"Centuries?"

"Yes. Unless..."

"Unless what?"

"All Immortals are by birth included in what is called `The Game'. When an Immortal kills another Immortal, a phenomenon called the Quickening happens. It's when the Immortal takes on the additional strength of their kill, as well as any special attributes, and sometimes special training that they may have had."

"But I don't want to have to kill anyone," replied Kevin, fear in his eyes.

"You won't have a choice. Sure, you'll be able to escape like you did by `killing' Devin, but you won't be able to do that forever. Devin is likely trying to find you right now in fact."

"What do you mean? I killed him! I felt him die!"

"Did you take his head?"

"No."

"Then he's alive, just as you are. I'm personally not into taking human lives as well, and there are probably some immortals that are just as negative about the Game as you are. Not everyone is wicked after all. But there are those who seek to gain the godlike powers that result from killing the other immortals, and they will stop at nothing to kill you. And to add to that fact, from what you're telling me, Devin has mutant gifts. They may not all belong to him, and they may also be just as transferable as other skills. Devin seems like one of those who will stop at nothing to gain your powers."

"Isn't there a way around permanently killing him?"

"It's your responsibility to kill those who are going to try and kill you," I replied. "If you don't, then they will take your head. I know it seems like a lot, but think about it. You're powers are very dangerous, and thankfully you are the one who has them. Do you really think that you'd want them to be in the hands of someone else who could use them for great evil? Like what happened with Hades?"

He seemed to be thinking it over. Finally, with a sigh, he replied, "You're right. I'll have to fight them off. But how will I do that, when I don't have a weapon?"

"You can have one of my swords," I replied. "I have one back in the X-jet I used to get here. The one we'll be taking back to New York."

"New York? You don't honestly think I'm goin' back wit' you to the mansion?" Remy said.

"You need to. Xavier's worried about you. And with all the shit going down now, we need all the X-men we can get."

"Please? For me?" asked Kevin. Remy looked at him, smiled, then relented.

"Okay, I'll go. But I won't like it."

"Good. Let's get ready then." Kevin nodded and stood, but as he stood, something heavy fell out his pocket and hit the floor.

I picked it up for him...a gun? "What do you need this for?" I asked him.

"That's not mine," he replied, and said it was Tessa's. As he took it from me, a question seemed to come to his mind.

"What's wrong?" I asked him. This prompted him to tell me about a situation that happened between he, Tessa, and another member of the Hellfire Club, Lady Mastermind. He had lifted the weapon after the night Gambit went after Tessa, used it in the shop at the mall, and learned it was a tranquilizer gun.

"I don't see what the big deal is," Remy said.

"I do," I replied. "With the Hellfire Club as bad ass as they are, they wouldn't resist the urge to kill an X-man, and sure as hell wouldn't travel with tranquilizer guns, disguised as real handguns. And you said she used a flash bomb, not a real grenade, to escape?"

"That's right," Kevin replied.

"I don't get it. By all rights, you two should be dead. Well, Remy at least."

"Hey!" he shouted in mock anger.

"Just kidding. But seriously, it doesn't add up. Why the kid gloves?" Then a thought occurred to me. "Who was she talking to at Paula's?"

"Didn't see. It was a tall guy with silvery-white hair, kinda muscle bound," replied Kevin.

"Magneto!" Gambit said.

"No, I don't think so," I replied, pulling out my cell phone, dialing, hoping I remembered the number correctly.

"Hello?"

"Cole?"

"Speaking."

"It's Josh, Cole. Are you busy at the moment?"

"A little, waiting on someone."

"Would it happen to be Tessa?"

Silence on the other end. "What are you talking about?"

"You're here in New Orleans aren't you?"

"What are you...what are you doing in New Orleans?"

"We have Tessa's weapon."

Silence. "Get home. As soon as possible," was the reply from Cole before he ended the call.

Kevin and Remy both looked at me expectantly. "I think my suspicion is right," I began. "It wasn't Magneto, it was Cole, one of the Professor's spies."

"Cole that used to be Zeus?" asked Kevin.

"Exactly. Cole told me to go home. As soon as possible."

"What is he up to?" wondered Remy.

"Oh my God!" Kevin said. "I think that Tessa is in danger!"

"What do you mean?" Remy asked.

Kevin was beginning to understand, but I explained for Remy. "Tessa has been non-lethal toward you, and has been talking to Cole, one of Xavier's spies."

"Oh! Tessa's a spy, too!" Remy said, in his best `aha' tone.

"Exactly."

"Oh no! She is in danger! After the scene in the shop, with Kevin shooting her with a tranquilizer—"

"—which in Lady Mastermind's opinion should have been a real gun—" I added.

"—now she knows that Tessa's not kosher, and suspects as well! Tessa will need help!" Kevin finished.

"That's why Cole wants you to go home," added Remy. "He can't compromise Tessa, and he sure can't go against the Hellfire Club alone, he may be undercover as well. He need a team of X-men!"

"I'll go home and retrieve some then. Can't risk calling them and alerting them, the Hellfire Club may have some advanced equipment so that they could overhear the transmission, if they haven't already heard me the first time when I called Cole."

"We'll stay here and get some idea of where they're staying. There ain't a New Orleans Inner Circle office, at least not yet." Remy replied.

"Good. Keep Kevin safe." He nodded in reply as I headed for the door.

"No!" Kevin suddenly shouted.

I had barely opened the door before getting hit with a strong telekinetic blast and I was knocked into a wall. Remy stood to greet the attacker, but he was thrown backward as well.

"Am I interrupting something?" the tall, attractive blond in all black said as he pulled a kitana from by his hip.

"Devin," Kevin said, clenching his fists, preparing for the confrontation to come.
