Bad days...Good days Story by David Spowart Chapter 6 I ran from the room, the reception for mobile phones were none existent inside the hospital. "Where are you going" the police officer shouted. "He's awake, I have to call his mother" I replied not looking back for a response. "Hello, Mrs Ross...He's awake...Peter's awake" I shouted, my heart bursting, I have just won the lottery, my life is not over. "Martin I'm on my way" and the line went dead. Thirty minutes later Mrs Ross arrived at the hospital. "Traffic, impossible to get moved" she moaned out, approaching me. "How is he?" she asked. "I don't know, the doctors are still in with him, they told me to wait in here" I responded. "We talked about how he was when he first woke up, just over an hour ago. "Good so his memory is okay then" she asked, "He knew who I was, so I suppose so" I replied. "Brain damage, they were very concerned about that" she said, looking at me. "Mrs Ross, he spoke to me, okay his voice was rough, but that I would have expected, he asked me for water, so his mental functions seemed okay to me, but again I am not a doctor" I replied. "Sorry Martin, I know I must be getting on your nerves by now" she apologised. "Mrs Ross, we are both stressed, he has been in here almost two weeks, so yeah we must be getting on each other's nerves" I replied, but letting her know it's just because of the situation not her. "Mrs Ross, Peter is settled, he is a little groggy, so just take it easy with him, we still have some tests to carry out, but they will wait until this afternoon" the Doctor said walking into the family room. "Can we see him" I asked, "Yes but don't overdo him, he needs his rest" he replied. "Any permanent damage Doctor" Mrs Ross asked, "We will carry more tests out later as I said, but from what I can see, from experience, he is very lucky" he replied. We walked back into his room and his face brightened, "Marty!" he tried to shout. I walked over reached for his hand, the I,V in his other hand prevented his mother from reaching for that hand, she leant over and kissed his forehead, "How you feeling sweetie" she asked, he cringed at the word. "Been better mam" Peter replied, "Stupid question, sorry" she responded. "Marty what did they do to you" He asked, "Billy Lake ordered my death" I responded with malice to my reply. "Your dad did what?" he replied. "Peter please don't ever call him that again, okay" I replied, I did not now or ever wish to be associated with that person. "Sorry, that bad huh" he added. "an undercover officer saved me, if it was someone else I would be floating down a river about now" I replied. Peter squeezed my hand in assurance "And where is he now" he asked. "Oh he's in custody, I have some information for the police, Billy should be going away for quite some time, believe me" I added. Peter began to look tired and we decided to leave him, "Get some sleep, we will see you later today" I said leaning over kissing his lips, I missed those lips. "Love you" Peter said to me as I was leaving. "Feelings mutual" I replied smiling as his eyes began to drop. I watched as he slept, happy knowing he was only asleep no longer fighting to stay alive, no longer in a comatose state, "See you later Pete" no response. "You Look tired Martin" Mrs Ross commented, "Been a tough week" I replied. "Look, I am going home, going to get some of my things before anything else goes wrong" I said to her and she smiled then replied. "You want a hand?" I shook my head, I knew that my dad...fuck!...Billy Lake had disposed of most of my stuff, but I had things hid, things belonging to my Mum, I had to get them. Forty minutes later I am pulling into my old street, the police were still at my old home, I walked up the pathway and talked to one of the officers stationed outside the front door. "Can I help you sir" he asked me. "I am Martin Lake, I live here" I replied. "Sorry sir its off limits until I am told otherwise" "Officer all want is to get some of mine and my mother's thing's, you can burn my dad...fuck! Billy Lakes shit as far as I am concerned" I responded. "Sorry sir, I am following orders" he replied, and just as I was going to make a fuss a detective working on my ...Almost! Billy's case approached me. "Mr Lake?" he asked. "Sorry Sarge, didn't know you were coming" the officer stumbled out, "Yes I am Martin Lake, and you?" I asked eventually getting a word in. "Detective Sargent Miles" he responded. "What are you doing here, I thought you were at the hospital with your friend" he asked. "He's resting, so I thought I would come and collect some personal items, ones my dad...shit! Billy has not thrown away yet" I said with some ill feeling towards the bastard. "Where have you been stopping?" he asked me. "A friend has a sofa, I have been sleeping there" I replied. "So what is the plan now" he enquired "Well when Peter is fit and well we will discuss our options, but I am favouring a transfer to either Manchester or Newcastle, both have great colleges" I responded. "Has Billy's lawyer been in touch yet" he asked. "No why would he, he will be defending him on his charges" I replied. "He's been asking for you, he has been here a couple of times since we cordoned off the house" he added. "Here he gave me his card" he said, before handing me the white card with *James Lloyd, Solicitor and his telephone number* I sat back in my car as I was refused entry to my home for the moment. I opened my mobile phone and dialled the number on the card. "Lloyd, Andrews, and Drew, Laura speaking how may I help?" she asked. "Oh Laura, can I speak to James Lloyd, he asked me to call" I replied. "And you are sir?" she asked. "Oh Martin Lake" I replied. "One moment please...putting you through" she added. "James Lloyd" he spoke "Yes Mr Lloyd, its Martin Lake" I replied. "Martin, about time you returned my calls" he said. "Mr Lloyd whatever you and my dad...fuck! Billy Lake have in mind you can forget it, he deserves all he gets and then some. "Martin I no longer represent your dad, when you had your Birthday I became your legal representative as laid out in your mothers will" he said and I was gob smacked. "Mr Lloyd you have lost me, what are you talking about?" I asked. "Can you come to the offices and I will explain everything, I have tried for months to reach you but your dad fobs me off with bullshit, so can you come and see me today?" he asked and I was interested in what he had to say so I agreed to go to the office. "Yes Mr Lloyd, how about now, I have things to do this afternoon but now is fine" I asked. "Yeah what time do you have in mind?" I looked at my watch and replied. "How is 11:30" "Erm wait a second, ...yeah that will fly, see you at 11:30" and the line went dead. I drove back into Sheffield and drove to the offices of James Lloyd. I walked up to the second floor and entered a plush looking set of offices, representing the scum of society pays. "Hello how can I help you" she asked the voice was a familiar one and I noticed the name badge was Laura, and I reminded her that I called earlier and she contacted James Lloyd and I took a seat and waited. "Martin can you follow me" she asked as I stood back up. I followed her and she knocked on a large oak door. "Come in" a booming voice responded. I opened the door and sat behind the desk was the lawyer that had protected my dad's...fuck! Billy's assets for a number of years. "Martin take a seat" he asked. Pointing to an over stuffed chair, I sat down and he came over and sat opposite me. "First off, Martin I have not been a part of your dad's" I immediately cut him off. "James, I can call you James can't I" I asked and he nodded. "Please never if we are to become client and council, ever refer to him as my dad, his name is Billy" I responded. "The man tried to have me murdered for fuck sake" I added. "Sorry Martin, I knew something was up when I went to your home, the police would not elaborate, and there has been nothing on the local news" he replied. "He attacked my partner, kidnapped me, beat me stabbed him, then ordered one of his goons to kill and dump me, but the goon turned out to be a undercover policeman" I informed him. "That does not surprise me, not in the slightest" James replied. "Your dad...erm sorry, Billy was one of the shadiest people I have ever represented, if it was not for your mother I would have stayed clear, but she asked me to keep an eye out for you and her assets which a now yours" James concluded. "Assets what assets?" I asked. "The two clubs, the house, they belong to you" he added. "What...no they are his" I spat out. "Martin he does not own anything, the money was your mothers parents money, she bought and ran the clubs, the house was your grandparents and is now yours" he ended. "What do you need me to do" I asked. "Instruct me to what you need me to do" he replied. "What is the worth of my assets" I asked. "Okay all in told just over 1.6milion before tax, approximately 1 million after everything is sorted" he told me. "Is that everything?" I asked now stunned at what he was telling me. "No the house is worth a quarter of a million on its own" he replied. "so what do you have in mind Martin?" he asked, a million questions whirling around my head and nobody to answer them. "Here I was told to give you this when I caught up with you" he handed me a letter. "Who's this from?" I asked looking at him quizzically. "Your Mother" he replied. I sat for over twenty minutes reading a letter wrote by my mother for me, she wrote this when she fell ill, she hoped that Billy would be a good dad, she got that wrong. She promised me that she would not lie to me, and mentioned a man called Terry Stokes, no reference to him, no mention of him through my life. "James who is Terrence Stokes?" I asked. "He used to be a friend of your mothers before you were born, Billy did not like him. he was from what I remember, your mothers best friend" James replied. "I think he lives in Newcastle, Sunderland or somewhere up there anyway" he responded. "Look on the back of the last page" James pointed out, it was a telephone number, it says this is the last known number for him. "A friend of Mums, I would like to meet him, find out about her when she was well" I said to myself and James nodding. "What do you need me to do Martin" he asked, and I wondered that myself, one thing I do know Billy Lake is out of my life and soon I would have the cash to make that happen. "Sell everything James Sell it all, can you do that for me James?" I asked looking at him for an answer. "If that's what you want, yes I can do that" he replied. I took my mother's letter and left his office. "Thank you James, I will be in touch" I said leaving his office. I drove back to the hospital, still the things that have happened so far today have me somewhat disorientated, lost for answers, perhaps this Terrence could send some light my way. I walked back up to Peter's room and walked in "Hey You" I said looking at him sitting up and smiling at me. To Be Continued... Sorry for the delay guys, life got in the way.
