Group Dynamics-Chapter 5 We entered Maple Dorm and made our way up to the third floor meeting room. Every dorm was constructed the same way; five stories, four suites with four rooms per suite on each floor. There was a fifth room on each floor as well, different for each floor. The first floor's extra room was the RA's room. The extra room on the second floor was the dorm computer center, which was open all night so students who did not have a access to a personal computer could do reports, emails, and surf the internet. The third floor held the meeting room. Various students used this room for meetings, but for the most part they were used as study areas. The fourth floor held the gym and fitness center, also open 24 hours a day. It had a full range of weights, exercise machines, and an area for aerobics. There were also several saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, showers, and lockers. The fifth and final floor of each dorm had the student lounge. These rooms were like the VIP lounges at most major airports. There were several large couches and loveseats, as well as recliners, and divans. There were card tables, pool tables, video game systems and a huge entertainment system, complete with big screen TV, VCR, DVD, and CD players. These lounges were open to all students, at all times. As we made our way up to the third floor meeting room, Matt looked around in slight disapproval. "All this money to spoil a bunch of college students." "Ah, shut it, Matt," I said. "You know you like being spoiled." "I do, but I'm not used to this much spoil." "Well, only the best for us, eh?" laughed Jude. "Yeah, and we all know I'm worth it," said Ryan, walking with his chest puffed out. Laughing, we walked up the stairs and into the meeting room. There were several people already there, a couple of girls and a few of the RA's. We took our seats around the large conference table that was set up in the center of the room. As soon as we walked in, one of the RA's, Todd, I think he had said his name was, stood up and cleared his throat. All chatter in the room died down as we focused our attention on him. "Hey, people," he began. "I'm Todd, the RA for Maple Dorm and president of the residence council. We're gonna get this rolling pretty quick. First of all, since there are so few of us in here, we have time to go around the table and introduce ourselves and give a brief introduction. You can tell us your majors and all that. "I'll go first. My name's Todd, like I said, and I'm a senior Pre-law major. I've been an RA for three years. Ok, next." He gestured to the person next to him, a angry looking chick with short brown hair and fierce brown eyes. She glared around the table momentarily and stood up with obvious reluctance. "I'm Rachael Lowell. I'm a freshman, pre-med student. I'm on the track and volleyball teams. I'm in Ash Dorm." She sat down abruptly, obviously not in the mood to divulge any more details about herself. Ryan and I glanced at each other, and he mouthed the words `psycho dyke'. A laugh broke free from me before I had a chance to smother it entirely. This earned me a few curious glances from my roommates, and the expected glare from Rachael. I shrugged apologetically and just sank lower into my chair. Ryan just sat in his chair with an angelic innocence plastered on his face. `I'm gonna throttle that dick weed!' I thought. The second girl stood up next and looked around the table, looking into everyone's eyes boldly, and with an air of confidence about her. "My name is Kelly Vicks. My major is undeclared right now, but I'm leaning towards marine biology. I'm from Boston, and I got here on a swim scholarship. So naturally, I'm on the swim team. I'm also on the volleyball team. I'm a sweet, lovable hottie, who has high standards on who I date. Those standards go for guys and girls, cuz I'm bisexual. Oh and my most endearing qualities are my shyness and modesty." With that, she sat down daintily. We sat there in stunned silence for a few seconds before the full extent of her joke dawned on us. I think Matt caught on first. He started laughing softly, the laughter growing until he was holding his sides gasping for air. Soon, we were all laughing uproariously, with Kelly sitting back in her chair obviously pleased at the reaction she got to her little joke. Ryan was the first to recover his composure, wiping the tears from his eyes as he finally got his laughter under control. "Shy and modest, huh?" he said, still chuckling. "If that's modest and shy, I'm drag queen." "Never said I was truthful," Kelly responded with a smile. That brought a fresh round of laughter. As we calmed down, I looked over to see Todd glaring at Kelly. Obviously, he didn't appreciate his meeting being disrupted by improv comedy routines. Either that or he didn't like the `bisexual' comment. Whatever. Already I was getting a bad vibe from Todd. He didn't seem to be a very nice person. Ah well. Fuck him. Next it was our turn. Matt, then Ryan, then Jude, then Josh all gave their little intros. When my turn came, I decided to take a page from Kelly's book, and share more than the usual about myself. I figured, hey, it's college. Everyone here is open-minded. Might as well set the record straight, as it were. "Hey, y'all. My name's Lukas Gavril. You guys can call me Luke. These other four losers are my suite mates," I began, pointing to my roommates. "I'm on the Swim team as well, here on a swim scholarship. I'm also undeclared as of yet, but, unlike our modest Kelly," Kelly nods in acknowledgement, "I am leaning towards Travel Industry Management. My family owns several hotels in the Philadelphia area, so I've gotta learn how to run them, since they're all mine now. My parents died in a car accident last year, and I have a lot of pressure on me to take the reins. "I'm also interested in theater arts, so I might minor in that, since the program is really good here. Since none of the other guys remembered to tell you, we're all in Rowan Dorm." I began to sit down. Ryan cleared his throat, and I stood back up quickly. "Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me, Ryan," I said with a smile. "I'm also queer as a three dollar bill. That means gay, for all you ignorant heteros." I sat down to the sound of laughter and applause. There was a look of surprise on Jude's face. He must not have expected me to tell anyone. Looking down the length of the table, I locked eyes with a very obvious glare from Todd. His face looked like he had swallowed something rancid. Judging from that look, I guessed he has a problem with me being gay. Again, ah well. Todd stood up and passed out the residence life handbooks and began going over the rules and responsibilities of the residents. The seven of us freshmen pretty much zoned out at this point and began murmuring amongst ourselves. Kelly leaned towards me conspiratorially and whispered "So, which of the four hunks you're rooming with is gonna be your target?" "Eventually, all four of them," I replied with a smile and a wink. "Hey let me have a few snog matches with them too," she said laughing softly. "After all, I said I was bi, not a full fledged dyke." "Oh, I guess I could share. Which one ya want?" "The brunette with the good tan," she replied, pointing at Matt. "But he was gonna be my first conquest," I whined plaintively. "Oh, no he was not gonna be your first conquest," said Matt from behind me. My head whipped around. I didn't think he was close enough to hear our conversation. I was blushing something fierce. "I'll go third or fourth, maybe," he continued, "but I gotta know you can handle this big corn-fed farmer's dick I got between my legs before I give you some. You fuck Ryan first, and then, if he gives you a glowing endorsement, I might let you have a tumble with me." He looked past me to Kelly. "You, on the other hand, are welcome to ride this ride anytime you feel like it, sexy." Kelly giggled softly. She looked appraisingly at Matt and then looked back at me. "Do all of you speak fag?" she asked with a grin. "Well, I know I do, and obviously Matt can hold his own. I have a sneaky suspicion that Jude can be had too." "What? My roomie sucks dick?" Matt whispered. "Cool, I won't have to go sneakin' into your room just to get a knob job. I think I like our suitemates a lot better now." "I said I think he can be had," I said. "I'm not positive. And you can still visit me for a knob job too." I leered at him. Kelly was listening to our conversation intently, and smiled. "I think we're gonna be great friends, guys," she said. "I think I agree," said Matt, and turned back towards what Ryan was saying on the other side of him. The meeting over, we all stood up and mingled for a few moments, getting to know the other two freshmen that were starting the second semester. It turned out that Kelly and Rachael were suitemates in Ash Dorm. They hadn't really talked much before today, and it was funny watching them discover how much they didn't have in common. Kelly was a boy band aficionado, eternally devoted to *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, 98ยบ, BBMak, even New Kids On The Block. Rachael was into grittier music, like Matchbox Twenty, Everclear, soulDecision and 3 Doors Down. She hated the Backstreet Boys with a passion, and thought O-Town was a cheap rip off of the already horrible *NSYNC. Kelly, in turn, thought Matchbox Twenty was a group of sad imitators. Just whom they were supposed to be imitating was never made clear. Kelly was the stereotypical prom queen/head cheerleader type that was entirely too perky for Rachael's quiet, rebel demeanor. Kelly was tall, blond, and stunningly beautiful, while Rachael had a darker, more slender and sultry, almost dangerous look about her. She reminded you of a dominatrix ready to spank you for daring to look at her without permission. Yet, despite, or perhaps because of these differences, Kelly and Rachael hit it off famously after the meeting. After all the initial get-to-know-you questions were passed around, the seven of us were fast friends. I had a sneaky suspicion that Josh, Matt and Ryan were throwing major wood for Kelly, and Jude rarely left Rachael's side the entire conversation. I sat back momentarily and watched the group talk, amused at the quick way that they bonded. Kelly noticed my silence and decided to draw me into the conversation. "So, Luke, how do you like rooming with four other gorgeous hunks?" she asked me. "I assume by saying four other hunks, you infer that I too am a hunk?" "Fuck you," she laughed. "Stop fishing for compliments." "Don't let him fool you, Kelly," said Ryan. "We've already told him he was hot as fuck. Makes me feel good to know how much you believe me, Luke." "Hey, if I can get a nice compliment from babes like these," I said, gesturing towards Kelly and Rachael. "then I'll believe anything," "Wait, you told Luke he was fucking hot?" asked Josh, with a confused look on his face, obviously a little slow on the uptake. "Of course I did. Don't you think so?" Ryan asked. "Well, yeah, he is kinda cute, in a GQ sorta way." "OK, enough about me, please," I said, holding my hands up, "I was asked a question. And the answer is, I believe I'm going to love living with these four `gorgeous hunks', Kelly." "I bet you are," Rachael said with a leer. "I overheard you telling Kelly that you wanted to bone all four of `em. I believe Matt said something like `Start with Ryan, and I'll go next'." "I did not say I wanted to bone all four of them," I protested. "And I offered to bone him, not the other way around," added Matt with a smile. "Oh, but you did offer me up first, then?" Ryan asked, beginning to advance on Matt menacingly. "I was only being polite," said Matt, as he dodged and attempted grab from Ryan. "I have a bigger dick than you. I figured you could break him in for me so I don't hurt him when I make him my bitch." "Glad to see they discussed this with me, ya know, before they started breaking my door down to take my virginity?" I said in an exaggerated whisper to Kelly. "As if you'd say no," she whispered loudly back. "OK, fuck all of you. I already called first dibs on Luke," Jude spoke up. "We've already made plans. Ain't that right, Lukey baby?" I blushed three different shades of red. I hadn't expected Jude to tell everyone what we had planned to do that evening. "Uh, well," I stammered, totally at a loss as how to respond. "Jude!? You movin' in on my man?" asked Josh. What!?! Josh too? What the fuck....? "Wait a sec," Kelly grinned. "They all want a piece of you? I thought it was you that wanted them?" I still hadn't found my voice. I was looking from one face to the other in total confusion. All of them? I could feel myself getting light headed. I tried to find a chair nearby to sit down, but there wasn't one available. I was gonna black out in a second. All of them? Oh, shit... I heard Kelly's voice ring out. "Luke? Are you ok? Luke what's wro...." I heard no more as I sank into concealing blackness. TBC
