"Yeah I suppose. Do we know if the cafeteria is even open?" "From what I can see from my window, the amount of traffic going in and out of the building indicates that it is." "Do we try and get Gordon and Aiden to go with us?" "I doubt like hell that you'll be getting Gordon anywhere near the cafeteria for a long time Den." "You're probably right. Try and get them to go off campus?" "Food court or the asian buffet?" "I'm thinking the buffet. Come on over and I'll see if they're awake and want to go with." "I'll be over in 5." I hung up and ran a quick comb through my bed head and went out into the hall. Aiden was on his way back to Gordons room from the head. "Aiden, we're heading out to the asian buffet for supper. Think Gordon is up to it?" "I can only ask. I know I'm not taking him down to the cafeteria any time soon." "Understandable. You want me to come in and put it to him?" "No let me try I think." I waited in the hall for Aiden to go in and ask. Karl showed up while I was waiting. "So?" "Waiting to find out." The door to Gordons room opened and they were both standing there. "It took a little convincing but let's go do this." We were quickly down stairs and to my car. A quick check and we were off to the Mall. It was fairly busy when we got to the buffet. Apparently a good number of others wanted nothing to do with the cafeteria tonight. We soon enough got a table and when the waitress came around and asked what we wanted to drink we all went with diet cokes until she got to Gordon. "Bourbon, neat." So far they had been the only words Gordon had spoken. Beyond that, I had never known Gordon to even have a beer. "Are you sure Gordon? That has never been a cure, only a bandaid." He only glared at me. After the waitress got his ID she was off and quickly back with our drinks. Karl and I went and got our food and when we got back to the table it appeared that the waitress was bringing Gordon a second drink. Aiden tried to get Gordon to go with him to get some food to no avail. Gordon was soon on his third drink. "Gordon, you're going to make yourself sick. Get something to eat please?" "Piss off." "Have it your way Gordon, but this doesn't get you out of jogging with us in the morning." Which only earned me another glare. The rest of dinner passed in relative silence, as did the ride back to campus. Aiden got Gordon back into the dorm while Karl and I took our walk. "He's going to pay for that stunt in the morning." "Hell with as slight a build as Gordon has, I'm relatively sure he's going to pay for it tonight, and I have not one ounce of sympathy for him on that count. Yeah I know that is how some people deal with things, but I don't think that is really going to help him. I'll bet his dad is a bourbon drinker and that is the only reason he went with that." "Yeah probably. Though after what he told us about vacation and only seeing his dad for an hour the whole 2 weeks, I'm betting he doesn't really give a shit what his father thinks." "That I think only time will tell." We headed back towards my dorm and when we got there, I saw a limo in the parking lot. "Shit. Looks like that may be put to the test tonight Karl." We skirted past the limo and went into the dorm and upstairs. We found Aiden standing outside of Gordons room. "That can't be good." "For either one of them. You want me to hang around Den?" "For a little bit if you can. Aiden?" "Both his parents are in there and it's been quiet for the last 10 minutes or so. They didn't ask, they just threw me out. I don't like it, it's too quiet." "I don't like the sounds of it either Aiden, but we can't interfere. A good talking to may be just what he needs." "A good talking to may push him over the edge Den." "Always a possibility, but if his mother is in there too,I'm betting she won't let it go that far. Not after what I heard when she picked Gordon up before." Just then the door flew open and Gordon went running down the hall for the head. Aiden took off after him. "What the hell? Gordon!" Mr Bartlett came to the door at that point and stopped an looked at us. "He headed for the bathroom sir. I'd let Aiden handle it I would think." "Handle what?" "Likely Gordon is voiding what little there is in his stomach. The only thing he had for dinner was at least 3 shots of bourbon." "Gordon? Bourbon? He's never even had a beer let alone bourbon." "Well he did this evening. We tried to stop him and he told us to 'piss off'." The look that came over his fathers face at that point could have melted stone. "Things he learned from you three?" "No sir not in the least. "Harrison, leave the boys alone. This is none of their fault I am sure. Bourbon is your drink dear." "That will be enough woman." "Don't take that tone with me Harrison!" "Please will you both put a lid on it before Gordon comes back out? He needs a united front and all of your support at this point. He was standing right next to somebody who got shot for gods sake." "What!? He didn't tell us that." "He shut down damn near completely. We had to physically carry him up here from the cafeteria. He has an appointment with a phsycologist at some point tomorrow. The man spoke to him for a while today. He told us to try and get him back into his routine. Hopefully we can get him to go jogging with us in the morning." "How far do you jog?" "About 4 miles. 5 times around the quad." "At what time?" "6 am. Sir." "We're going to be staying locally for at least the next week. Here's my cell number. Call me if needed." By this time Aiden was leading Gordon back to his room. Gordon looked to his parents and then looked to us. He came over and put his arms around me. "I need to apologize to you Den." "Don't you worry about it Gordon. A lot of shit has happened and you had to deal with it. Just know that we'll be here for you." Gordon then went over to his father and squared his shoulders. "I'm sorry to have inconvienanced you father, mother." Mr Bartlett didn't say a word, he took Gordon in his arms and hugged him. If anything was said I sure as hell didn't hear it. His mother soon joined them in that hug. Aiden then got Gordon back into the room and left the door open for the moment. Mr Bartlett turned to move down the corridor. "Please keep an eye on him Mr Sawyer." "I will certainly try Mrs Bartlett." She took off after her husband and they left the building. I stuck my head into Gordons room. "Try and get some water into him Aiden, and I still expect to see the both of you in the morning." "We'll be there if I have to carry him piggyback." Karl and I left the room and went into mine for our good night kiss. No sense in going back outside. Karl headed back to his room and I made sure I had everything together for classes in the morning. Pete came back in just before 11. "How is Susan doing?" "She's hanging in. Nobody that she knows got hit so there's that." "How about you?" "I'm good Den. They didn't release us from the theatre until everything was pretty well cleaned up,so we really didn't see anything." "And they didn't allow any press onto campus so there's damn little coverage on tv." My phone buzzed and it was Karl with his nightly message. I sent my usual back. "You staying up Pete?" "Nah I'll be down in a couple." I turned out my lights and rolled over. Soon enough the alarm went off I got up and slipped into my jogging stuff. I was out the door and Aiden was coming down the hall from his room. Gordon came out of his room looking like 3 days of bad weather, but at least he was up and there. "Let's get the blood pumping a little bit. Hopefully this isn't going to hurt you too much Gordon." We got outside and much to everyones surprise, Harrison Bartlett was standing there in a wind suit waiting for us. Not a word was said as we started our first lap. Karl had seen us coming and stepped right into rythnm with us with nothing but a nod to Mr Bartlett. We had to slow ourselves down a little for Gordon, but I'll give the kid credit. For as lousy as he had to be feeling physically he hung in for the whole 5 laps. When we finally got back to our dorm. Gordon simply went over to his father and gave him a hug, which was returned by Mr Bartlett. We were all quickly inside and up to shower. I knew it was probably going to be breakfast with just Karl, but I went down anyway. I just couldn't get going without breakfast. Classes were rather a subdued thing today and sparesly attended, which I guess was understandable. I checked my email between classes and there wasn't anything except a reminder that we had a mandatory practice this afternoon. I went to my Historical Events class and then headed back to the dorm to drop my stuff off before heading over to the Rec Center. I had a good hour before practice so I did a little work in the weight room to get warmed up. Practice time rolled around and I made my way to the apparatus room. Some of the others were there ahead of me. We all kind of compared notes from over the holidays and a fair amount of discussion was had about the recent events. Soon enough we were all there, except Dwayne, but he was usually the last one there anyways. While we waited for coach, Dana got us to stretch out and there was still no coach. I was hoping that a call to coach Matthews wasn't going to be needed. A man came out in sweats and went to Dana. Soon enough we were all called in. "Gentlemen,I know you all remember that your coach had a family problem just before the holidays. Circumstances are such that he won't be returning to campus. At least not for this year. My name is coach Warren and I'll be seeing you through to the end of the year at least."
