At the time half the team thought I got Gary suspended just so I could get his spot on the squad. I'm not so very sure that particular feeling has been completely overcome. I'll happily compete if the need arises, but I'd prefer to stay an alternate." "Well I can understand where you're coming from Dennis, but if I choose to do it, I'll make it right with the team." "No offense, but you may have a hell of a time doing that if many of them go digging." "My worry not yours Mr Sawyer. Now go on and get out of here. You must have some studying to do." "Yes sir." I left the office and was on my way out when a couple of the guys stopped me. "We saw coach call you in. Everything ok?" "So far yeah." "Dennis, we don't have any idea what's going on, but we wanted you to know whatever the hell it is we'll stand behind you. You've been nothing but upfront with us since the first time you walked into the room, and we don't know this coach from a hole in the wall." "Do us all a favor and don't go doing something you can't walk back. What's going on is strictly my concern at this point." "Have it your own way Dennis, just know that we're here for you." It was good to know that there were those that had my back. I made it back to my room and unloaded. I took a few minutes to check my email and again it was all spam as far as I was concerned. Pete was there, but was getting changed to go out with Susan if I were any judge. He took one look at me and stopped. "Dennis?" "What?" "Don't what me. I've been living with you long enough to know when something has you bugged." "Nothing you can do anything about so go out and enjoy yourself. You going to want the room later?" "Maybe. I won't know until I can really find out what kind of a mood she's in." "Troubles?" "I'm not sure. She's been a little out of it since last weekend." "Give it time Pete. Not everybody gets back to normal at the same pace." "Yeah I suppose not. You sure you're ok?" "Yeah. I'm just waiting on Karl to see what we're going to do for supper. I'm thinking we hit Rons. We haven't been out there in a while." "Maybe we'll see you there. No promises." "Yeah ok." Pete was out the door and Karl was in shortly after. "I was thinking Rons for supper tonight." "Sounds good to me. Your car or mine?" "Let's take yours for a change." We walked back across the quad and quickly checked Karls car before we headed out to Rons. The place was fairly crowded but we found a table soon enough. Gloria was there to take our order and we were soon enough having our meals. When we were finished we were outside in the parking lot when Paul walked up to us. "Hey Dennis. Can you tell me what the hell happened last weekend on campus? All we've gotten is hearsay and guesswork." "We haven't gotten a whole hell of a lot more. Single shooter, 3 dead,27 wounded. Personally I only know one person who got hit. Ingram hall was shot up pretty badly, but it looks like all of the repairs have been taken care of. You know as much as I do now. What have you heard?" "My dad heard that the shooter was an ex student. Guy got himself thrown off campus for something stupid the beginning of the semester. He also heard a bunch of other theories, none of which have been verified or debunked." I must have gone pale or something. "Geez Den are you ok?" "Yeah...I......I will be." I looked at Karl and knew that he knew what was going through my mind. Kyle Grant. "We don't know Den. This isn't your fault in any way shape or form." "His fault? How the hell could this be his fault Karl?" Karl looked at me and I knew the question he was asking and nodded yes. "Paul I don't know if we ever told you or not or if you figured it out for yourself, but Dennis and I are gay. The first weekend that he was here they had Frat House Friday. One of the houses is for gay and bi men. Dennis went there with his friends and one of them was propositioned and said no. The guy was insistent upon it and was told no again, loudly. Push came to shove and Dennis put the guy down and the guy was thrown out of the frat on the spot. Next day the moron attacked Dennis again and was again put down and ultimately expelled. What you just said makes Den think he is responsible for what happened on campus." Poor Paul just stood there with his mouth hanging open for a few seconds. "You guys are gay? But you seem like such normal guys?" "Paul, other than who we love, we're not all that different from you or your friends. I do gymnastics, play football when a pickup game comes around. I did most of the mechanical work on my car when it was restored. There's no reason we can't still be friends if you want." "I...... I just never knew any gay guys before." "That you know of." "Well...I guess that is probably true. I..I guess I need to think about this." "Understadable Paul,Just remember that it doesn't really make us any different from the people you knew before. We are still the same people you tried to bust the first time you ran into us." That brought a little bit of a smile to Pauls face. "That could have turned out a hell of a lot differently." "I'm kinda glad it turned out the way it did Paul. Regardless you keep your ears open and we will too. Eventually we might well learn the truth of the whole thing." "Yeah maybe, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll catch you guys later I guess." Karl and I made our way back to campus and he could tell I was upset still. That there was even a chance that I was responsible for what happened was enough to keep me upset. Rather than being seen around campus in that state Karl walked me up to the roof of my dorm and we found ourselves a corner to just be together in. He held me tight and we barely spoke a word to each other. Eventually we headed down to my room and thankfully there was no heart on the door. We walked in and Pete wasn't even there yet. Karl just walked me over to my bed and we simply held each other. At some point Pete came in alone and saw us on the bed. He looked like he was going to say something until he saw the look on my face and the way I was up against Karl. "Shit what now?" "We heard a rumor that last weekend was a guy who got himself kicked off campus for something stupid at the beginning of the year." "Fuck! That dipshit from the frat house?" "Dens convinced himself of it I think. Which makes it his fault as far as he is concerned." Pete came over and pulled me away from Karl, and I didn't resist. "Dennis Sawyer, you had damn happy well better listen to me for a change. You had absolutely no control over what Kyle Grant did if it was indeed him. YOU are NOT responsible for any of this. Do you understand me or do I have to pound it into you?" "Pete you would no more hurt me than I would hurt you, but I get it, I guess. Things could have been handled differently but I don't see that it would have made a real difference. He was bound to fuck up big time, it just so happened that it was with me." "You guys want the room?" "Is it going to bother you Pete if I just lay here and hold him?" "Hey once I'm asleep it isn't going to matter for shit." "Then no we don't need the room, but I will be staying with him." "You'll have to leave as soon as I get up if you;re going to be ready to jog with us." "Don't you worry love. I'll be ready when the time comes." Pete just stripped down and Karl got a little case of the wandering eye as this was the first time he had ever seen Pete naked. I didn't mind and just pulled him a bit closer. Eventually we must have fallen asleep as the alarm was going off. Karl rolled out of bed and was out the door before my feet even hit the ground. AS quietly as I could I changed into my jogging stuff and was out the door. Aiden and Gordon were out front with Mr Bartlett by the time I got down stairs. We started out and as we approached Karls dorm he fairly exploded out of the front doors. Our laps were run without incident this morning. I was about to head into the dorm. "Mr Sawyer, if I could have a moment once I'm done with Gordon?" "Certainly Mr Bartlett." Gordon and his father had a brief conversation after which they shared a rather long hug. Gordon had tears in his eyes as he walked past me. I walked over to Mr Bartlett. "Mr Sawyer,....... Dennis. Mrs Bartlett and I are heading home when I get back to the hotel. First, please keep an eye on Gordon for us. He certainly holds you in high regard. Secondly, I feel I owe you an apology. I've been doing some research over the last few months. It has lead to some rather eye opening results as far as I am concerned. I once accused you of making Gordon gay. I've come to find out that it seems that you can't make someone gay. You either are or are not. There seems to be some evidence that there are physical differences in the brain. It seems that the brain of a homosexual male is more closely akin to that of a straight female than that of a straight male, and apparently the reverse is true of a lesbian female if I read the materials correctly. Simply, you and Karl and Gordon and Aiden were made that way in the womb, that there was no "choice" involved in the matter." "I hadn't heard of any of that before sir." "I doubt many outside the particular field of research have Dennis. Regardless, I feel that I owed you that apology." "Apology accepted Mr Bartlett. Those tears in Gordons eyes just now. They were happy tears I hope?" "I certainly hope so too Dennis. You have my number if anything is ever needed." "I do sir. Have a safe trip home." SPECIAL NOTE: I know I'm going to get letters about the theory put forth in this chapter. I must thank one of my readers (you know who you are) for pointing me in the direction of this research. I simply did a search using the terms "Brain structure and homosexuality." Even a cursory examination should be enough for serious consideration. Apparently it is nature and not nurture. MPA
