Of all people it was Jared who stood up and came to me. "Those of us who knew Kyle don't hold you responsible Dennis. It's just a couple of the freshmen who think this is your fault. The whole thing has just kind of left a sour taste in everybodies mouth." "Thanks Jared. I suppose I can appreciate that. Has the frat itself been getting any grief? I purposely haven't been reading the papers or watching the news so I've no idea." "The frat has been mentioned by name in a couple of reports as far as I know, but nothing else. Hell after tomorrow the story will be the big game and people will forget about all of this." "I hope to hell they do. I'm going to go crash...alone." I turned to head upstairs and Kurt was standing there waiting on me. "You holding up ok Dennis?" "Yeah I'm getting by. My roomie decided to entertain tonight so I thought I'd crash here." "You know we'll always have the door open for you, despite what a couple of our freshmen might think." "I know Kurt and I appreciate it." I headed upstairs to my room and made sure the door was securely closed tonight. I didn't want any mistakes this time. 11pm rolled around and I got my message from Karl and sent mine back letting him know I might be a few minutes late tomorrow morning as I was staying at the frat tonight. My phone rang. "Everything alright lover? They giving you shit at the dorm?" "Nothing like it. Pete's entertaining and I didn't feel like waiting on the couch tonight." "Ok as long as that's all it is. I'll see you in the morning. Love you." "Love you more. See you in the morning." I was soon asleep and 5:30 rolled around far to early. I got up and headed back to the dorm. Luckily the heart was gone from the dryboard and I slipped inside and then into my jogging stuff and back out to meet the guys. Once again this morning there were a few people outside waiting on us. "Listen up! It was no comment yesterday, and it's no comment today and it will be no comment tomorrow. I haven't got a story for you so you might all just as well stay home in bed from now on." The three of us then started our jog. We picked Karl up and continued on around the quad. There were still a few reporters there when we came back to the dorm and we ignored them as they shouted questions to us. By the time we completed our second lap it appeared they had all gotten the message and given up. By the time we had gotten around for our final lap there was an older group of people standing out in front of the dorm just looking the place over. With the big game only a few hours away, I figured these to be alumni checking out their old building. When the three of us peeled off and started to head inside there were a few frowns directed at us. Apparently some of the stories had included that we had our early jogging routine, which made it fairly obvious who we were as we were the only ones out. I ignored the looks and just went in to shower and get changed for the day. I didn't have anything planned seeing as I wasn't going to be able to get into the apparatus room. I didn't have any plans to attend the "big game" either. I headed downstairs to get some breakfast and Karl and the guys soon joined me. "Those alumni types don't seem very happy today." "I'm sure the dorm holds a lot of memories for them love. That it should be defiled by gunfire probably has them a bit upset." "Yeah I suppose. Any idea what you want to do today as I know you don't intend to go to the game, and the apparatus room is closed." "Not the foggiest lover. My studying is all caught up, I have no projects to do. I haven't given it much thought." "We could always go for a bit of a mystery tour." "With or without and overnight bag?" "With if that's what you want lover." Much as I wanted to get away from campus, I didn't want to take the long drive out to Whispering Pines again. "As good as that sounds Karl, I have a feeling we'll be better off hanging around here. Traffic later on today and even tomorrow is likely to be a pain in the ass." "Yeah I suppose. What are we going to do around here all day though?" "I suppose we could kill a couple of hours at the movie theatre?" "Well that's one thing Aiden, but I don't want you guys thinking that you have to stick with us today, or any other day for that matter. You guys have your own lives to live after all." "Dennis, if we didn't like you we wouldn't be hanging around in the first place." "Thanks Gordon. I just don't want you guys feeling obligated." We finally decided on the mystery tour and Karl and I went and threw a few things in an overnight bag for just in case. We were soon enough off campus and picked a road and started driving. A little after noon we found ourselves coming up on some kind of state park. We turned in and found that there was a riding stable there. That seemed as good a way as any to kill a good part of the afternoon. When we got to the stables itself we found that we had a choice of a 1 hour, 2 hour, or overnight ride. We decided what the hell and took the overnight ride. We would be spending the night in a lodge deep in the parks interior. Soon enough we were mounted up and headed into the park. The trail was wide and well groomed so there was little threat of any misteps by the horses. There were parts that were trail and parts that were wide open for the most part of the trip. Later in the afternoon we made our way into some hills and when we stopped for the night found ourselves looking out over a vast vista. "I think we could well spend many a night looking at this love." "I'm betting the sunsets are georgous all year long Den." There were about 15 riders altogether. A mixed bag of people. From the looks of things though we were the only male couple in the mix. The sleeping arrangements were broken up into three large rooms, one for guys, one for girls, and one for married couples. It kind of went without saying that Karl and I got a few looks from the other guys when we bedded down together. I waited for somebody to say something, but it didn't happen. The night was pretty uneventful after lights out. The next morning we were all a little stiff but we finally got up and walking around enough so that we felt better. One guy was making it a point to be walking along the edge of the hill. The head of the ride suggested that might not be the wisest thing to be doing, but the guy ignored him. Sure as death and taxes the guy started to go over the edge. I was closest and I shot an arm out to try and catch the guy. Luck was with me and I snagged his arm as I went flat on the ground. It was sheer luck that the guys weight landed on my shoulder that my gymnastics training let the shoulder take the shock. Karl had grabbed my legs by now and somebody else had grabbed him. Slowly we got ourselves pulled back onto solid ground. We laid there for a few minutes just getting ourselves together. "Thanks, that fall may not have killed me but I'd sure as hell be a hurting unit." "Not a problem." "How's your shoulder?" "It will probably hurt for a couple of days, but I'll be fine I think. I'm Dennis by the way." "Joe. I didn't think you had that kind of strength, after seeing you two cuddle up last night." Some kind of a sour look must have crossed either Karls or my face at that point as Joe looked a bit startled. "Sorry I didn't mean to offend you. It just never crossed my mind that either or you were any kind of jock." "I'm betting you've not known many people of our persuation then?" "No can't say as I have." "Not to get on a soap box, but we can be and are just about anything people of your persuation care to be, including professional athletes." "Yeah I've heard that before, but hearing it and meeting it face to face so to speak are two different things." "I suppose they are. Well I guess we had better get ourselves together and get ready to ride." By the time we had gotten saddled up and back to the stable it was a bit after noon. Karl and I got back into his car and headed back towards campus. We stopped for lunch at a little place without incident and finally made it back to campus in time for supper. "Where the hell did you guys disappear to?" "We went on an overnight ride. The place was absolutely beautiful, the sunset unbelievable." "How do you guys find these places Den?" "Sheer luck Aiden. Just have to be willing to take a chance." Soon enough we were done with supper and Karl and I took our nightly walk. "How's your shoulder doing lover?" "Not bad. Feeling like I did one hell of a workout is all." "Yeah well you might think about taking it easy for the next couple of days." "You know I can't. It's not quite two weeks until the next meet." "There's such a thing as being over prepared love." "I'll be fine lover. I'll give myself a little extra time in the whirlpool for the next week." "Maybe a heating pad at night?" "Maybe. If it hurts worse I'll have coach take a look at it." "Promise?" "Promise." We found our little corner of shadow for our good night kiss and we went to our rooms. There was no heart on the dryboard tonight so I went right on in. Pete wasn't about so I went and checked my email to find nothing but spam again. I was beginning to wonder if the lawyers would turn up anything. Pete finally came in about the time my phone buzzed with my message from Karl. I sent mine back to him and then started to strip for bed. "Mother of god Den! What the hell did you do to your shoulder?"
