It wasn't anybody I recognized and I made it a point to walk on past him and into the day room. He didn't seem to recognize me so I had no idea what may be going on. I moved back to my room and the guy looked at me. "Mr Pershing?" "No sir. He probably won't be here for about another hour or so." "Thank you." The guy moved down to the dayroom to wait. I went into my room and booted my computer and checked the email and again there was nothing there. I got to thinking why there would be someone there for Pete. Nothing came to mind except the case against Detective Higgins. It was getting close to time for Pete to be out of english so I texted him. "U have a suit waiting 2 C U." "any idea Y?" "none" "Thx for heads up." It was about 10 minutes later that I heard voices outside the door and it then opened to Pete and the guy. "This really should be discussed in private Mr Pershing." "Whatever it is I have no secrets from Dennis." "Very well sir. Your father had an estranged brother. I was not made aware of the reasons for such, but it had been going on for a good many years. Your uncle recently passed and there was a stipulation in his will that any offspring of your fathers be provided for. Therefore, if you will simply sign this claim form, I have a check for you for $50,000." "Say what!" Something was rubbing me the wrong way about this. "May I see that claim form please?" "Are you a law student sir?" "No, but I do know a bit about it. Pete you got a problem with that?" Pete looked at me and got a bit of a wary look in his eye. "No I don't. Please let him inspect the form Mr Gant." "If you insist." I took the form and read it carefully. There was a clause that got my attention. It read to the effect that if Pete signed this he didn't have any other claim on the estate. "Pete, I don't like this clause. I want to send it to Mr Jacobs for a quick look see." "Do it Dennis." "I must object to this." "Why am I not surprised?" I placed the claim form into by printer and scanned it and then sent it to Mr Jacobs office. I then got on the phone and called him to tell him it was there and to get his immediate reaction. "Ok Dennis I have it, just give me a second. Hmm I can see why you sent this to me. That lawyer still in the room?" "Yes." "Ask him to step out for a second and then put me on speaker." "Sir would you please excuse us for a moment?" "This all highly irregular." "Humor him Mr Gant." The guy stepped out and Pete closed the door. "Go ahead Mr Jacobs." "Ok Mr Pershing, the way I read this is that there is probably a much more substantial estate here, and they are trying to buy you off cheap for whatever reason. Having said that, if you don't accept the $50,000 it could well drag out for years and the ensuing legal fees would probably eat up a significant portion, if not all of any proceeds. One is a sure thing, the other is a gamble. I'll be happy to pursue that matter if that is what you want Mr Pershing, but it is your desicion. I noticed that there is a time limit on this offer as well. Seems you have 48 hours to reach that desicion." "Your best advice Mr Jacobs?" "I'm not much of a gambler Mr Pershing. Personally I'd take the offer and consider myself lucky." "Thank you Mr Jacobs. I'll discuss it with Dennis." "Thank you Mr Jacobs. Have a good evening." "You boys take it easy." I hung up and looked to Pete. "Well?" "It's mighty tempting Den." "Yeah you could well use that money to set you up for life if you were careful with it. I mean you have the scholarship here to pay for everything and then once you graduate you'll have a means to support yourself. You don't take it and like Mr Jacobs said, it's a crap shoot." "I guess I have to go for the sure thing Den, even if I end up shortchanging myself. But I've got a couple of questions for this Mr Gant." Pete opened the door and waved Mr Gant back in. "I've got a couple of questions for you Mr Gant." "Of course if I can." "Are there any other claims on the estate?" "Yes. Your uncle was survived by his wife and 2 daughters, both of whom are married." "Pete, Randy Porter, your second cousin." "You know Mr Porter? I have to speak to him as well." "It never dropped for me Pete. You must actually have quite the extended family out there somewhere." "Mr Gant?" "Indeed you do Mr Pershing. Your Aunt, the 2 first cousins and 5 seconds cousins, including Mr Porter." "Would they be up to meeting with me at some point?" "I do not know Mr Pershing, but I shall certainly pass the request if that is what you would like." "Yes please do so. In the meantime, if you'll give me that release." "Of course." Pete signed the release and I signed as witness. Pete was given the check for $50,000. "I shall pass the request to the family and let you know Mr Pershing. Now if you know where I might find Mr Porter?" "He is most likely in Cochran hall directly across the quad." "Thank you gentlemen. Have a good evening." Mr Gant left at that point. "Shit Denny! I've never had real money before. What do I do with it?" "For right now get it deposited in a bank. Then take your damn time and decide what to do with it. Think long and hard on that. You know where my branch bank here in town is and there is a branch at home. That would be my immediate suggestion. Here take the Benz, but check it over before you pull out. I need to get over to practice. Just take it easy." "Are you sure Den? I'd never forgive myself if I wracked the car up,hell if I even got a scratch on it." "I'm sure Pete. You can't leave something like that laying around. Get it deposited and relatively safe. Be sure and set limits on the debit card they are bound to want to give you and have them put you on the notification system to protect yourself from dipshits like Larry Brown." "I'd better get going. The banks close at 5." Pete was out the door and so was I. I got myself over to the rec center and got changed up and went to the office before I went out to the apparatus room. I still needed the final approval from the coach before I could get back to work. "Ok Dennis, the shoulder looks pretty good to me, but I want you to take it easy today. I don't want you pushing yourself to hard." "Yes sir." I was just happy to be able to get back out to work out. I decided to just work on my floor and rings today, and maybe try the triple again on the high bar. I went and did my floor first. I didn't throw as much into it as usual as coach had told me to take it easy at least for today. I landed all of my moves but not with a lot of energy. Dana, our team captain, came over to me. "You alright Den? You don't seem to have your usual zip." "Yeah I'm fine. Coach just told me to take it easy today. He's still worried about my shoulder." "How's it feeling?" "It's fine, not even stiff today." When the rings were free I went over and did my work there as well. The moves weren't as crisp as they normally were but again coach didn't have a lot to say. I moved over to the highbar finally and coach did have something to say when he saw me headed in that direction. "Mr Sawyer, DO NOT try the triple today." "But it is what needs the most work coach." "Be that as it may, I'm telling you not to do it. There's time to work on it a bit later, but not today." "Yes sir." So I went and worked through my regular highbar routine and did the double tuck dismount. I was going to call it a day. "Mr Sawyer may I see your horse routine please?" Now that struck me as a little odd seeing as the coach had told me to take it easy today. Regardless I went over to the horse and did my usual routine. I didn't have any difficulty that I could see or feel when I dismounted. "Very good Mr Sawyer. I think that should be all for today." "Yes coach." I thought it was a bit strange that he had me do the horse routine until I realized that it worked a few muscles that hadn't been worked by the other routines. I went into the locker room and changed into my bathing suit and headed for the pool. Aiden and Gordon were there for a change. I hadn't really been keeping track of how Gordon was coming along with his body building, but when I saw him in his bathing suit it was pretty obvious he had been working at it the whole year. Yeah I should have noticed everyday when we all showering up after jogging, but I made it a point not to look at Gordon or any of the other guys in the shower. I had soon finished doing my laps and headed for the whirlpool and Aiden and Gordon joined me. "I hadn't noticed before Gordon, but you're looking really good these days." "Thanks to you guys keeping me at it I am. Dad even noticed when I was home for Christmas. Surprised the hell out of him." "Well now it's just a matter of maintaining the work Gordon." Soon enough we all went to the showers and were headed back towards the dorm. Karl had been on is way to the rec center and just turned around and walked with us. When we walked into the dorm I could see that there was a police officer standing by me door. "What the hell now?" "Mr Sawyer?" "Yes." "I'm sorry to have to inform you sir that there has been an accident involving your vehicle. The driver is in serious condition." "Mercy General?" "Yes sir." I turned on my heel and hoped one of the guys was with me so I had a ride. I went plowing through the doors at the end of the corridor right into somebody.
