A student was found earlier today on campus severely beaten. He is listed in critical condtion at Methodist Hospital in the city. The student has been identified as Mercer Campbell, a former memeber of the gymnastics squad. Campus police along with local authorities are attempting to identify those responsible for this apparently unprovoked attack. I found the card that Stimson had given me and I forwared him the article with only one word in the subject line. "Connected?" I didn't really expect to get any kind of answer from him, especially tonight. I shut down the computer and waited for the 11pm texts. They were exchanged and I headed for bed. Not that I got to sleep right away. One part of me wanted to go and see Mercer over the weekend and the other part of me said that would sure as hell be tipping my hand to Teramedies. I must have eventually dropped off as the phone alarm woke me up. So once again it was up and out for the jogging with Aiden and Gordon in tail. "Jack Rabbit Kangaroo" When Karl got over for breakfast I told him about Mercer. Gordon and Aiden were right behind him. "You think Teramedies had anything to do with it?" "I don't know ,but I wouldn't put it past him. Then again it could just as easily have been the other members of the squad depending on how passionate they are about the sport." "They'd have to be pretty damn serious to go to that length." "What do you think about going up to Presscott and looking in on him over the weekend?" "I think your spook handler would have a shitfit hemmorage." "Yeah pretty much what I figured as well. I wish there was something I could do for him." "Nailing this bastard would do nicely I'm thinking." "Yeah let's hope. We'd better head for class." So another Friday was underway. Mr McEmbers was right on time and launched right into things as usual. Ethics was seen to and then I had an hour to kill. I went to the student union and grabbed a sandwich and headed outside. I wasn't really paying attention until somebody sat down next to me. "Kangaroo. We're looking into it but it seems likely." The guy got up and left shortly after without speaking anything further. I finished my sandwich and made my way over to Accounting. Once done with that I headed back to the dorm to drop off my books and wait until 4 when coach would open the apparatus room. I did my bug sweep and checked my phone for any uploads from the camera. It was just Pete and I. I checked my email and newsfeed while I waited and there was nothing in either that merited my attention. Eventually I was off to the Rec Center and today I just worked my vaults and pommel horse and the parrallel bar. I hit the pool and whirlpool as usual and then headed back to the dorm to meet Karl for supper. "I'm going into town for a bit of an upgrade to my stereo system on the car in the morning. You coming with?" "Yeah sure. Get's us off campus for a while. We still jogging in the morning?" "Of course we are." We had our usual walk and good night kiss and messages were exchanged at 11 and another day was done. I was out for jogging with Gordon and Aiden in tail once again. "Kangaroo Llama" Soon enough it was back to the dorm showers taken and down to breakfast. After a quick trip back to my room to get the camera and harddrive and a quick checkover of the car, Karl and I were on the road. I had taken the time to check with the dealer to see who they recommended for aftermarket installations and we were soon at the shop. I did indeed upgrade the speakers for the stereo and had them install the camera system and the hard drive. When I inspected the car I couldn't tell that any work had been done to it which is exactly what I was hoping for. Several hours later Karl and I pulled back onto campus. The rest of the weekend was pretty uneventful as well as the rest of the month. It was Friday afternoon and we had worked our way up to yak. Classes were finished and the team boarded the bus for the three hour ride over to Crookshank College. I had asked Dana about our record with these guys and it was pretty balanaced. So they were likely to be some hard competition. We pulled in a little after 7 and were shown to our rooms, which were pretty standard college rooms. We then were taken to the cafeteria so we could get our dinner. Then it was a chance to inspect the venue. The usual stuff. I was again roomed with Dana. "You ok Dennis? Last couple of weeks you seemed to be out of it a little." "I'm fine Dana. I've got my head into this for tomorrow." "Yeah well I saw that news story a couple of weeks ago about your friend getting beat up and I know that's got to be eating at you." "I won't lie to you Dana, I'm concerned, but I've got it under control, really." "Ok I'll just have to take your word for it." "I'm calling Karl and then I'm going to crash." "Hey lover, all settled in for the night?" "Yeah just about Karl. Everybody ready to make the drive in the morning?" "Yeah everybody said they were going to crash early so we could get out of here early. So how does the place look?" "About the same as ours. The equipment looks a bit more worn but it all seems to be in shape." "Ok then. We'll see you in the morning. Love you." "Love you more." "Last time we roomed together you told me you were going to marry that guy. Where's that stand?" "Still in the future Dana, just not sure when yet." "Don't put it off too long Den." "Not my intention to. Things will probably come together this summer." "Great. Now as your team capptain, get some sleep." We were both soon crashed and it seemed much to early that my phone alarm went off. Dana was still asleep so I ducked into the shower. When I came out Dana was awake and just finishing shaving. "Leave me any hot water?" "I certainly hope so." Dana headed into the showere and I shaved and got dressed. When it was time we all trooped downstairs and meant our guides and went to the cafeteria for breakfast. We sat down across from the other team and everybody seemed pretty sullen this morning. The guy across from me didn't even look at me when I sat down. It ended up being a very quiet breakfast. When I went to take care of my dishes there was another guy right behind me. "Yak Zebra." And he was gone just as quickly. We went and got out gear and went over to the venue and did our warm up and then retired to the locker room. "Just me or do they seem pretty down?" "Not just you Den. They could be trying to psyche us into letting our guard down, but I doubt it. Something has got them buggged." "What's their record for the season?" "Pretty even, not as good as ours, but not that bad either." "Maybe this'll be an easy one." "Don't even think like that Andy. That's how we beat ourselves. This meet requires every bit of our skill and concentration as any other meet." "Listen to Dana gentlemen. He is absolutely correct. You let your guard down and you beat yourselves. This is the toughest opponent you will come up against this year. You have to look at every meet in that frame of mind if you want to win." "Yes coach," was the unanimous reply. We waited while the other team did their warm up and then we were out on the floor and the opening ceremonies were taken care of. I looked up just to see if I could spot Karl and everyone and they were right there at center court where they would be able to see everything clearly. Now it was time to focus as we were paired up and sent to our starting positions. I was first up at the vault. I was up and over and landed my first vault solidly, as did my opposite number. The second was well executed as well, but the other guy had a bit of a stepout on his landing. Not deadly but it was still tenths of a point off. We moved on to the pommel horse. I worked my routine as solidly as I could and "stuck" my dismount once again. The other guy did a solid enough routine and had a good landing. I didn't look at the scoreboard, but I thought I was ahead even at this early stage. It kept up this way through rings and the parrallel bars. When I got to the highbar I looked to coach and he just shook his head no. So the triple dismount got held in reserve for another meet. I did my highbar routine with just the double somersault and had a bit of a wobble but managed not to step out of the landing. Last up was the floor excercise. I worked my way through that and when I was finihsed and my score had been posted, then I looked at the board. I was several points up on my opposite number. I gave the whole board a good look and it was easy to see who was going to win this meet. The announcements were made and our guys rushed the floor. Karl and the others were soon at my side. It took a little bit to get order restored and the awards ceremonies took place. We were soon enough showered up and back to the room to collect our things. The other team was there to shake our hands as we boarded the bus for the three hour ride back to campus. When we arrived those that had gone to the meet were there to greet us. There was a goodly amount of back slapping and glad handing, but finally Karl and I got back to my room. My phone beeped to let me know it had recieve photos from the camera. I started to scroll through them just as routine. There was me leaving on Friday night and Pete and Suz coming in later and them leaving the this morning. The next photo should have been Karl and I coming in just now. What was on the screen was the picture of somebody I had never seen before.
