"Hope to hell so. I should have spotted you last year. I must be slipping." "Hey I actively was disuading you from the idea if you remember." "Yeah I suppose. So what really was the deal with that secratary Janice?" "She was withholding information we needed for decisions and she got caught at it. She was not just screwing with the company but every one of our clients as well. She's damn lucky there weren't any criminal charges that could be filed, well none that I know of anyway." "Remind me not to piss you off boss." "Just remember the door is always open if something is bothering you." Everybody went off to get ready for the day and I was handed a binder that was about 3" thick. "That is the apprentice program Dennis. For the rest of the summer that is your damn bible. You've got about a half hour before Mr Angelo Terrentollo gets here. He is going to be your trainer." "He been at it long?" "6 years with the company the last three as a trainer. He'll see you taken care of." I went into my dads office and started going through the training manual. Some of the stuff was pretty basic and I knew already from my reading at home and the courses this year. 8:45 rolled around and I saw Stan heading for the floor so I followed him. "OK boys and girls, the Asian markets were pretty quiet last night and the european markets have been sluggish this morning. Everybody keep your eyes open. Feels like something is getting ready to happen." Stan then motioned me to follow him and he took me to one of the desks. "Angelo, here's your new recruit." ""Yes Mr Sawyer I presume. Was wondering when you were going to show up." "Mr Sawyer was my father, I'm Dennis." "On the trading floor and under my watch, you're Mr Sawyer and I'm Mr Terrentollo." I thought to myself this is going to be fun. Stan just gave the guy a "what the hell" look, but didn't say anything about it. "Ok the bell is in a few minutes. Get him set up with what you want for the day." Angelo sat me down at a desk and configured the screen the way he wanted it. "What I want you to do today is to just watch the Dow, NASDAQ, and the S&P 500 averages and get a feel for the flow of the market. If any one of the indicies jumps more than 30 points in one shot let me know and then we'll work things from there. Listen to what I'm telling clients as well if you can." "Yes sir." Sounded like it was going to be an exciting day. So the bell was rung and the boards started flowing. I had a much better idea of what was going on then when I first walked through here a year ago. I watched the indices as I had been instructed and when there was a significant change in the numbers I made it a point to note the time. None of them ever did reach the point of a 30 point jump so there was little need to say anything to Mr Terrentollo. I tried to listen as he spoke to clients on the phone. He asked them of how much risk they wanted to take and based on that offered them his best advice. Other folks he asked what their long term goals were and again offered advice. Lunchtime came and we never left the floor. Mr Terrentollo had something delivered. I hadn't noticed that he made a call to get anything so I had to assume it was a standing order. There were a few slack times when I was asked what I was noticing. I looked at the notes I had been keeping. "Seems as though things get busier at the top of the hour and I haven't been able to discern a reason for it." "Neither have I over the years Mr Sawyer. It may be as simple as the human mind subconsciously saying to itself that the top of the hour is a maker point for the day." "There haven't been any 30 point jumps that you had me looking for, but a more a constant ebb and flow. Is that more the norm?" "It is. Those huge jumps I was looking for usually either signal a major happening or are in response to one. I know that a lot of colleges offer a course in Macro Ecomonics these days." "Yes I just completed that course." "Good then I don't have to explain that concept to you. so now......" He reached over and adjusted the screen so that I now had a news ticker running below the indices. I want you to take note of what you think are major international stories and see how the market reacts to them. We have to try and stay on top of things to offer our clients the best possible advice. Some accounts we have a certain amount of discretion over. Basically that means that we can make trades, within certain parameters, to maximize our clients investemnts." "Those would be the directed accounts?" "They would. You've been reading." "Like I said I just finished the first year of the certification program at State." "Then you are a leg up on a lot of the trainees. This should go fairly easy this summer Mr Sawyer." At that point his phone rang and he was back to it. It was back to watching the news ticker and the indices for me. 4:30 and the closing bell and I was a bit bleary eyed from watching the screen all day. "Observations for the afternoon Mr Sawyer?" "I didn't see any major stories that had a major effect on the market this afternoon. Long term though, the drought in greater Asia may well play a part in grain exports/imports if it lasts much longer." "Good catch. So how would you hedge your bets if you have a client who was heavily in grain markets?" "That is a damn good question and I truthfully don't know enough about commodities to answer that with any degree of certainty. I suspect however that the price of exports will go up unless there is reduced demand here at home." A statement which earned me a bit of a raised eyebrow. "Good to know you are wise enough to admit that Mr Sawyer. Perhaps an area for independent study for you." "Perhaps Mr Terrentollo." "Regardless, you are basically correct. Keep reading through your 'bible'. I shall see you tomorrow." "Have a good evening sir." I moved into the what had been my dads office to try and gather my thoughts for the day and to pick up a few things I had left there this morning. "How was the first day Dennis?" "Not what I expected Stan, but still instructive in its own way." "Angelo is a bit unorthidox, but he has turned out some good traders, almost all of which are still with us." "Then I guess I can't argue with his methods. By the way who do I see about getting a lunch delivered?" "What's your favorite sandwich?" "Roast beef with mayo." "I'll see to it you get included." "So anything to the end of the day I should be aware of?" "Not yet. When we get nearer the end of the summer maybe." "Then in that case, I'm heading home." "I won't be that far behind you." I collected agent Goulding and we headed back to the house. Karl was waiting at the door for me. Once I freed myself from his hug and a kiss I had to recap the day for him. "Sounds as if it was damned dull." "It was a bit, but Mr Bellows tells me the guy is the best trainer in the place and I don't see where I have any place to argue with him." Karl saw that I had my new 'bible' with me. "So that thing going to be keeping us apart?" "Not if I can help it. Mrs Ohanlon, do I have time for a swim before supper?" "Not really boyo. It'll be ready in just a few." "Then I had better go get out of these and into something comfortable." "We could always have supper in bed." "We could but we're not. I still want a swim after." I ducked into the bedroom and quickly changed into some "bumming around" clothes. Supper was soon enough served and Karl,Al, and I ate pretty much in silence. After Mrs Ohanlon was gone for the evening I did finally get my swim in. When it came time to call it a night, Al followed me around as I checked all of the doors and windows and set the alarm. Soon enough Karl and I were in bed. "So what's eating you lover? You've been quiet pretty much since supper." "Just that even now we aren't really alone. Al is just down the hall." "I can't just dismiss him.....can I?" "Hell if I know. Given that Stimson wanted to put you in protective custody I'm not thinking so. And truthfully, I'm not so sure that things are over and done with." "Why? Did something happen today?" "Probably just my nerves, but there seems to be a lot more traffic around the last couple of days." "Could be any number of reasons, not the least of which is my recent celebrity. Not to sound concieted, but I'm sure there are any number of people who would like to get a selfie with me." "Yeah I suppose. I'm still not liking it." "Best get used to it for a little while at least. You coming with this weekend when I drive over to Edgeton?" "Yeah I don't intend to let you out of my sight even if it is so you can practice. I suppose we have to take Al with us?" "I don't see a way out of it love and I do want to try and stay on top of my game." "This kind of commitment and you're still going to tell me that you'll be giving it up after next year?" "Hey unless I want to try out for the Olympics there isn't a venue for me to compete in after school. I sure as hell don't have the time to devote to an Olympic career, or to coaching or judgeing." "You could judge. That's mostly weekend stuff." "Leaving how much time for us?" "Probably a damn sight more than we will have when we're back to school. Between classes and practice and meets, there wasn't a hell of a lot, but I knew that going in." "Do you want me to give it up altogether?"
