Just about that time Karl rolled in and I shut down the computer and got the heat under the veggies and fired up the broiler. "How was your day lover?" "About what you'd expect for a Monday Den,yours?" "The usual. Supper should be in about 20." "Practice tomorrow?" "Yeah a closed one so I'll be throwing my triples." "That's going to knock some socks off." "Oh I'm sure. The asst coach may have a bit of a fit as he asked me before if I had anything more to give and I told him no, but it was an open practice and Coach Warren said to keep the triples under wraps." "Then let the coaches hash it out." "My thoughts exactly. See any of our guys today?" "Just saw Pete to wave at. He and Susan were off to somewhere." "Good to know they're still together." "Yeah looks serious to me." "Well good on them. I hope it goes longterm." I then turned my attention to getting supper ready. Once we had eaten and gotten things cleared up it was school work for the both of us tonight until we sacked out. 5:30 and the usual routine was done. I hung around the apartement and followed the European energy market before I headed into class at a little after 11. There was the usual brief discussion and then I waited for my turn at a review today. I was the last one today so I asked the proffessor if he had a few minutes to look at something. I pulled up the PDF I had created the other day and asked him to take a quick look at it for his opinion. "Mr Sawyer, you pulled all of this from public records?" "I did." "What made you go looking in the first place?" "Do you remember how Teremedies Industries sold off a lot of assets this summer?" "I do and then it seemed this Teremedies fellow just up and dissappeared.... Ah I see. All of that money had to go somewhere eventually. But why your personal interest?" "He was arrested on racketeering charges, basically trying to fix the All State gynmastics competition." "Enough said. I have heard of your prowess in that field and quite frankly I don't need the details. Well suffice to say you may have well taken notice where others haven't. It should prove interesting to keep tabs on." "Seeing as if whoever gets any kind of control, it may well have global implications." "I think once you get certified and pass the exam that your fathers ccompany is going to be in good hands. I do however need to get to a meeting." "Of course, until Thursday." We both left the room and I still had a while until practice started. I went and grabbed some lunch and staked out a spot for a while. Pete and Susan stopped to talk for a bit and I verified that they would be at the meet a week from Saturday. Soon enough it was time for me to head over to the rec center for practice. I noticed that even the windows in the doors had been blacked out. I went to the locker room and got changed up and was out on the floor with the rest of the team who were all there on time. Coach Warren got us all together before we stretched out. "Okay you guys, I know this is going to sound a bit paranoid but I don't want any of you talking about what goes on at these closed practices outside of this room. We'll be getting alot of attention from the other teams that we'll be facing after taking the all state. Whatever secrets we have I want to keep secret. Got it?" "Yes Coach." "If any of you have anything that you haven't shown us yet these closed practices are the time for it. So whatever it is as long as you think it is safe, let her rip. Team format today. Dennis lead us off." I moved up to the pommel horse and did a pretty standard routine. The rest of the guys follwed siute and then we moved on to the vault. I took a quick look to the coach and he nodded yes. I took my run up and made the triple with only a little wobble to my landing. There was a bit of a murmur from the rest of the guys. I did look over to the coaches and coach Warren seemed pleased and asst coach Connors looked a little pissed. After everyone was done with the vault we moved on to the parrallel bars where I again did my standard routine. Then it was onto rings. When I did my triple dismount there was even more discussion from the squad. Coach Warren looked very pleased and Coach Connors had even more of a sour face. It was on to the high bar where the triple dismount was expected. Which left only the floor excercise. I went through the excercise with the the few changes I had made and when I got to my last tumbling run and threw the triple Coach Connors damn near exploded. When I got off the mat Coach Connors came over to me. "What the hell Sawyer? I flat out asked you if you had anything to show me and you lied to my face!" "Easy Coach. I told Dennis to keep those triples under wraps and not to say anything about them. You know as well as I do that there are eyes everywhere, especially after taking the allstate." "So he was just following orders. Guess I can't be too pissed about that." They got back to watching the rest of the squad and soon enough we were released. I went and changed into my bathing suit and caught a few laps before I hit the whirlpool. Dana,Josh and Greg were there as I slid into the water. "Damn Dennis you're going to be damn near unbeatable this year." "Maybe Dana, but I'm going to hold onto those for as long as I can just like last year. This is going to be my last year competeing so I'm going to make the most of it." "But this is only your second year here Dennis. Why are you quitting?" "Because Josh I'm only here on a two year certification program." "Yeah well, I guess that would do it." "So what can you tell us about these guys we'll be up against first?" "Anderson Poly Tech. We beat them last year and that was before Dennis joined the squad. There may be a bit of sour grapes when we get there as one of their squad got cut before they even left here to go home." "Yeah that story even made the rounds back where we're from. I would have decked the guy." "And that would have sparked a minor riot I'm sure Greg. Would have ended up getting both squads thrown out of the season." "Yeah I suppose." We all got out of the tub about the same time and hit the showers. Greg and Josh seemed to have overcome my being gay and our conversation continued even through our getting changed. I gave Karl a call and let him know I was on my way home. "So did you blow them away lover?" "Don't know about blowing them away, but there a good number of surprised expressions. The Asst coach damn near lost it before Coach Warren cooled the guys jets." "Do I want to know?" "He asked me the other day, in an open practice, if I had anything else to show him and I told him no. Just like Coach Warren told me to. When I started throwing triples Connors damn near blew his stack." "Every thing is cool now right?" "Yeah Coach Warren set him straight." "Well get the table set dinner is almost ready." The rest of the evening was pretty quiet and we crashed about 11. Wednesday and 5:30 saw us up and out again and over to campus for our jogging. Home showered and fed Karl and I were off to campus once again. Classes went as expected and by 4:30 I was home again. There was a recipe card on the counter for meatloaf and I worked the time back to when I should get the thing in the oven. I had a good half hour before I had to get started and that was if Karl got home at the expected time. The evening was quiet and we were in bed by 11. Thursday and Friday went about the same way and I was up Saturday morning, but didn't go jogging with the guys. It was our first all day practice and then next week would be our first meet. Once again when I got to the apparatus room the windows were blacked out. There wouldn't be any spectators for most of this season. After stretching out we proceeded to do a full run through in team format. Later we did individual work with the Coaches. Gary was there watching and I did see him point out a couple of things to Coach Warren. We broke for lunch and I, along with most everybody else, hit the student union as it was closest. "Can we expect this every meet Dennis?" "Yep. The Saturday before every meet,be it here or away, is an all day practice. Final practice is on Tuesday and then it's rest until we leave for the meet. If it is a home meet we all pretty much end up crashing early and then have the team breakfast at about 5:30 and zone out until the warm up. If it's an away meet we usually get to warm up first, if it's here we go last." We all finished eating and headed back to the rec center. It was another complete run threw. "Gentlemen, you've all made it very difficult for us to come up with a starting line up. So we've decided to do something a little different this year. The squad will be rotated for the first few meets until we see how you do under pressure. We'll set the first line after a few meets. Merely for accounting and conference purposes at this point, Greg and Josh as the two newest members of the squad you'll be listed as our alternates. You will get your shot along with everyone else these first few meets." That didn't seem to sit to well with the guys, but they didn't make a stink about it. Everybody headed for the showers while I hit the pool for a bit. By the time I got to the whirlpool it was empty. I slid in and relaxed for a few and then hit the showers. When I was on my way back to my car I did run into Josh and Greg. "You guys ok?" "Yeah we kind of expected to end up being the alternates, especially with so many of last years guys returning." "I don't know what's running through Coachs mind at this point, but if says you'll get your shot it will happen. I can also tell you that last year he had no qualms about switching me out of alternate to first string when he saw I was better than the guy I replaced. Just hang in." "That's all we can do Dennis."
