I never would have thought when I started this that I'd be able to hold your attention for this long. I'd like to say thank you to all of you who have hung in there since Dennis first woke up. At present I don't know just how far I'm going to take the story. Should I end it when Dennis graduates? When Karl graduates? or should I continue on until you all are fed up with me? Regardless of how far it goes I do intend to try and tie up all of the loose ends. Again thanks for hanging in there. Mark "However you got there guys, I really don't need details if you don't want to." "Yeah, well you were't going to get any details anyhow. Just we did find a way to resolve our issues." "Good and it showed in your workout today. Coach told me you keep it up and you'll get your shot to compete next meet." "How tough are these guys from Pemberton?" "Tough enough not to slack off though we did beat them last year. Plus, as far as I've heard, we don't know what kind of talent they picked up this year. What I can tell you is that last year they got in our face a bit about the condition of our bus. These guys all come from money and may well try and head game us about the condition of things. Don't let them get to you. We found out last year how easy it is to mess with somebodies head." "Care to eloborate?" "Last year I wasn't on the team at this point. One of the guys from Anderson was a high school team mate. He was the loudest criticizer when I came out. Well I was playing host and I was told that he would 'out' me first chance he got. I figured I owed it to the team to let them know ahead of time so they could get their heads around it. They did and then decided to try an freak the guy out. It worked better than intended and the guy screwed himself at the meet. You guys already know what happened after that." "The spitting incident we heard about?" "Yeah." "Ok, we've been warned and can watch out for it. Any thing else we should be aware of?" "They're likely to have a hell of a turn out here. We surprised the hell out of them last year by having about 3 bus loads of students show up to support us. They may well try and organize their student body this year." "We still have home court advantage." "That we do Josh and we get to sleep in our own beds. I'm thinking they won't be overly happy with the beds here." "Why not? They're the same beds we sleep on aren't they?" "They are Greg, but those guys are used to sleeping on high end mattresses. Like I said it's a money school. Their tuition is at least twice what ours is." "So likely nothing here is going to be good enough for them?" "That was the attitude I got last year Greg." "So we just have to tune them out?" "Yep, that's the best advice I can give you Josh. Well I'm done. See you guys Saturday for the all day if not sooner." "Later Dennis." I hit the showers and changed and called Karl to let him know I was on my way. It must have showed that I was relieved over the whole situation as Karl spoke up right away. "Hey lover, looks like the weight of the world has been lifted from your shoulders." "Yeah to some extent. Greg and Josh somehow resolved their problems on their own." "Somehow?" "I didn't ask and they weren't telling, something I have to respect." "Well good on them for it on both counts. So they're good to go?" "Yeah they had great workouts from what I could see. Pretty sure they'll get their shot with Pemberton." "Any scouting reports on them yet?" "Not that I've heard of, but there's only been one meet I think. I suppose I can check after supper and see if there's anything on the net." We soon enough had supper and once I got my schoolwork done I went to see what I could find about Pembertons first meet. What I found was, franlly, surprising. They had been beat by a team that hadn't even made it to the all states last year. The team that beat them was in the opposite direction from us and so wasn't within the travel bounds for us to have them on our schedule. "Damn! They got beat and badly to boot by a team so far down the listing last year that they didn't qualify for the all state." "Then either they graduated a lot of their talent, or they didn't try out this year, or that other team struck gold with their recruits this year." "Or all of the above. Could well be that their guys just hadn't hit their stride yet to." "Still, sounds like you're going to have an easy go of it." "You know damn well we can't think that way lover." "Yeah I know but we can hope can't we?" "I suppose so. Just do me a favor and don't spread that around. I don't want it getting back to the team and getting them over confident." "And what makes you think they won't go looking for themselves?" "Not a damn thing, but I'm thinking they all have enough sense not to say anything to the rest of us if they do find something, just for the same reasons I'm concerned about." "Let's hope they are all that smart, though I'm betting against it." "Actually, so am I. There always has to be one. I even had to warn Josh and Greg about it today. They got asking about Pemberton and I told them how they tried to get into our heads with the bus last year. Then I had to tell them about Larry just to illistrate how easy it is to do." "Oh they must have loved that story." "Yeah well for them it was the story behind the story so to speak as they had heard about the whole spitting incident." "I think anybody who is into gymnastics at almost any level heard about that love." "True enough I suppose. You about ready to call it a night?" "Yeah just a few." We zonked shortly after and come 5:30 we were up and out once again for the daily routine to continue. Classes seemed to fly today and I got home before Karl today. I got supper started and hit the books while I could. Karl showed up shortly after and we had supper and again settled in for the night. The routine wore on thru Thursday and I was out of the one class early as I had already had my review for the week. That gave me plenty of time to kill before practice started at 4. I grabbed a light lunch and even though there was time to kill, I headed over to the rec center. There were a couple of guys there ahead of me and I heard them talking. "Yeah Pemberton got beat by some third rate team their first time out this year." "Then we should be able to wipe the floor with them. Oh hey Dennis." "Hey. Listen you guys know better than to start thinking that way. Coach said it last year. We have to approach every meet as if it is going to be the toughest meet of the year, otherwise we beat outselves going in." "Ok Dennis, we get it. No more speculation on the meets." I went around to my locker and started to get changed. "I heard that little speech Mr Sawyer." It was easy to recognize the Asst Coach Connors voice. I turned to face him. "And?" "Just glad I didn't have to deliver it. Sometimes unless it is performance related, the guys who have been at this for a while tend to tune the coaches out, but will listen to their team mates. Now just how good was Pemberton last year?" "They had some skills but we did beat them and it was my first time as an alternate." "Well then, doesn't sound like a bit of confidence is uncalled for, but that's between us." "Yes sir." I finished getting changed and headed for the floor to stretch out. It was an open practice so I wouldn't be throwing any of the triples except the high bar. When I wasn't actually on a piece of equipment I was watching as many different people as I could. Everybody looked to be in good shape and ready for the meet. The all day on Saturday would likely cement the performances by all. When I was done it was the usual trip to the pool where I ran into Aiden and Gordon. "So all day on Saturday. How's the team looking Den?" "They're in really good shape if I'm any judge Aiden." "Good. We've been talking the meet up so there should be a really good crowd." "Thanks for that. After what we did last year I expect there to be quite a turn out from Pemberton this time." "Only time will tell Den. We going to see you at all this weekend?" "Certainly for jogging on Sunday if nothing else Gordon." Shortly the four of us headed for the whirlpool. Naturally Greg and Josh were there. It was a bit of a tight fit for the five of us, which surprisingly didn't seem to affect either Greg or Josh. "So friends of yours Dennis?" "As it so happens yeah. They were close by to me last year in Ingram. Matter of fact I think Gordon was in the room you guys are in now." "Small world as they say." "Aiden, Gordon, this is Josh and Greg from the team." "Hey guys. Good luck next week." "Hey and thanks we'll take it." There was several minutes of awkward silence. "Gordon.......do you mind if I ask a really personal question?" "Go for it Greg." "Well...are you two........" "Gay? Yes we are. Does that make a difference?" "Actually we've recently learned that it does not. Just didn't want to be stepping on any toes." And answer that was a bit of a surprise to me. We all soaked for a few minutes more and then headed to the showers. I did notice that Greg did give both Aiden and Gordon the once over and they both returned the look. When I got back to my locker and got dressed I checked my phone and I had one text. Would appreciate you being here tomorrow when national rep arrives.
