"Outrageous..." "Who is this....." "Who in the name of...." "All of you shut up! Dennis?" One chuckle was heard amongst the crowd. "I could well be mistaken Randy, but if you sign a non specific power of attorney, not only could you end up broke, but you might owe them money, a lot of it." Which well started another round. "Preposterous....." "Of all the...." "Wise ass little...." I didn't pay any attention to them. I could see that Randy was thinking about what I had said. "Ok listen up all of you. I'm not going to be signing a damn thing for anybody. If that's all you're here for you might just as well go home." There was more grumbling but about 98 % of the people left. Those that stayed were our group and a pair of adults. "Nice to know our son has friends he can count on." "Mom , Dad. That's Dennis. You've heard me talk about him before. This is my cousin Pete and his girl friend Susan. I don't know for sure, but I'm betting that guy with Dennis is his husband Karl." Which got a bit of a confused look from his parents. Randy had certainly noticed. "Just good people I've found." "Well that's pretty obvious son. I think we might just have found someone to stand up to the rest of the family." "If anybody could, my money would be on Dennis." "Wait.... is this the young man you had that challenge with last year?" "Yes mom. Opened my eyes to a lot of things." "From the way you treated Alan over the summer I would have to say so." Though nobody asked Randy volunteered. "He's a gay neighbor I used to rag on. This summer I just talked to him. Turns out to be a pretty good guy." I didn't say anything, but I was very pleased that Randy really had seemed to get the point. We sat there and talked for a bit. Pete described in great detail how we had gone on to win the game. When I looked at my watch it was damn near time for us to be at the Castanzas for supper. "Randy we need to hit the road. I'll try to check in on you in a couple of days." "Thanks for being here Dennis. Can I call if I need?" "Damn sure you can. You going to be able to get a ride back to campus Pete?" "Yeah not a problem." Karl and I were downstairs and to my car. About 20 minutes later we were back at the Castanzas. Paul and Cam pulled in right behind us. "Mrs Castanza, do we have time to run upstairs?" "Not tonight Dennis. Supper will be ready in just a minute or two, so best get that table set." Which is just what the four of us did. Supper was excellent as usual and after we cleared the table Mr Castanza stopped Karl and me. "New keys boys. Had a better door lock and a deadbolt installed. Those other boys got in there far to easily." "Thank you sir." Karl and I got the new monitors out of the car and carried them upstairs. Once we were inside we could see where Pauls father had put everything to right. I went and opened the new monitor and connected it up and booted the machine. It took a few seconds to recognize the new monitor, but everything seemed to be in order. I checked my imaginary portfolio and found that things were just as I had left them. The emails for all of my classes were intact along with those of my friends. I them did a directory of the hard drive just to be sure nothing obvious had been added. Karl was busy doing the same to his machine. "Looks like we lucked out, kinda." "Yeah, good thing the police got here when they did." Now that we were home, so to speak, we got busy on all of the bookwork we had missed for the two days. It was time for us to crash out before we knew it. Monday morning and the routine started all over again. I had finished classes for the day and headed over to do a general workout. By the time I was ready to hit the whirlpool a few of the guys from the team were in there already. "Hey Dennis we heard about you getting hit by some morons. You ok?" "Yeah, everythings has been put to right. The landlord took care of it all except for a couple of personal items." "Well you know you can call on us if you need to right?" "I appreciate it guys. The morons were caught in the act so I'm not to worried about them." "There's that at least. Ok see you around Den." "Later Jack." Soon enough I was out of the whirlpool and showered up and headed home. I grabbed the snail mail and headed upstairs. Karl wasn't home yet so I checked to see what was defrosted for supper. There was a pound of hamburger sitting in the fridge. Well there was any number of ways to prepare that. I went through the other groceries to see what I had to work with. We ended up with a salad and sloppy joes. I was ready to settle down for a nice quiet night, but life had other things in mind. Along about 8:30 my cell phone rang. "Dennis I need help PDQ!" "Randy? What the hell?" "My uncles are trying to have me declared incompetent. Mom and dad can't hang around here much longer and I need somebody here I can trust. I want to give you my power of attorney." "There isn't anybody else?" "Not around here. It's either you or Pete and he has already refused." "Do you have one there all drawn up?" "No." "Do you want it to be specific or general?" "General." "Let me get on the horn to my lawyers and see if there's anything they can get me right away." "Thanks Den." I hung up with Randy and dialed Mr Jacobs at his night time number. "Mr Sawyer, must be important." "Only to those concerned. I have a friend by the name of Randy Porter. He got hurt in a football game this weekend. His uncles are trying to have him declared incompetent so they can take over his affairs. He wants me to have his genreal power of attorney." "Give me an hour and I'll have it sent to your email as a PDF. I suggest having a notory there as well when signatures are affixed." "I'll see to it Mr Jacobs. I'm sure they must have one at the hospital for emergencies." "Most likely. What conditions do you wish set on the revocation of this power?" "Whatever is the usual thing." "Very well then at the discretion of both parties. I'll have that out to you in about an hour Mr Sawyer." "Thank you Mr Jacobs. Sorry to have ruined your evening." "Part of the job sir. Good night." "Love of my life, why are you putting your foot in it again?" "Because somebody needs my help Karl, and you know me." "Yeah I do Den. So just what the hell is going on?" "I don't honestly know at this point, other than Randy seems to be in deep shit." "Is there any other kind?" "Not for us it seems." I waited to make sure the PDF got to my inbox before karl and I crashed out for the night. Bright and early next morning Karl and I were up and out with the guys, and then back to the apartment. We got showered and changed and Karl headed for school. I printed out the PDF and headed for the hospital. Before I went up to Randy's room I went by the admin offices and did find that they had a notary on staff. We were quickly up to Randy's room to find some of his uncles there ahead of us, with a police officer. "Officer, that young man should be escorted from this area." "Officer I am here at the specific request of Randy Porter. It is my understanding that his uncles are trying to have him declared incompetent. I have a power of attorney that was draw up last night at the specific request of Mr Porter and I am here to see it executed." "And just what makes anyone think you are capable of administering to Randels needs?" "Not a question of capacity as it is 'Randels' wishes." "For the love of god everybody shut the fuck up! Officer, Mr Sawyer is here at my request and the Power of attorney that he is here to execute was drawn up at my request. This paid off jerk pretending to be a doctor hasn't declared my incompetent so Dennis get your ass in here and let's get that thing signed." Which is exactly what we did, while Randy's uncle stood there and turned several shades of red before leaving. I took the time to speak to Randy about some specific circumstances in regard the power of attorney, just so I knew what he wanted to be done. "I have to haul ass to class Randy. You need anything I can bring back later?" "Just my books and laptop Den. I can try and keep up while I'm here." "Hall and room number and your roomies name and something I can tell him to prove I'm on the up and up?" "Simmons hall 223. Roomies name is Patrick Donovan. Tell him the punchline is 'no son pie are round'." "I don't even want to know the setup. I'll try and get that stuff to you tonight after practice." "When's the next meet?" "A little over 5 weeks I think." "Maybe I'll be out by then." "Here's hoping, later." Class was pretty easily taken care of today and I grabbed some lunch and waited for the apparatus room to open. When it did I made a complete round of the apparatus and then it was in to the whirlpool and getting dressed an headed over to Simmons hall. I found the room without a problem and knocked on the door. There was a bit of stumbling around before the door opened. **************************************************************************** By the time you folks read this I'll be serving jury duty, so I might not get out timely replies to any comments sent.
