"Yes he did,oh God what am I going to do?" "You are going to let my lawyers do what they are getting paid for. Represent my best interests." "But.." "No buts Mrs Pershing. You and Pete are under my roof and that makes it my responsibility and as I said,it's what they get paid for. Now if you would care to go I'm heading for the police station." "Let me get my coat." We were out the door and down the road in mere minutes. There was a familiar car pulling into the police lot just as we arrived. I saw Mr Jacobs and another man get out to head inside. Mrs Pershing and I fell in behind them. "Not a word Mr Sawyer. Let Mr Benson here handle things." "Sure, however this is Mrs Pershing,Peters mother just so you know." "Mrs Pershing, please the same applies to you." "Of course." We went in and Mrs Pershing and I hung back as Mr Jacobs and Mr Benson went to the desk and made their inquiries. They were shown deeper into the station while Mrs Pershing and I had to sit there and sweat. About an hour later Mr Jacobs and Mr Benson came out with Peter in between them. Mrs Pershing went to Peter and was about to start asking him questions but Mr Benson gave a very sharp shake of his head. They hustled Peter out to their car. "Dennis follow us to the office please." I got Mrs Pershing into my car and followed to the office. We went inside and then into a private conference room. "How bad is it Mr Benson?" "Bad enough Mr Sawyer. How much do you know of the situation?" "Only that Mr Pershing has a problem with booze and has been known to strike both Peter and Mrs Pershing. You might want to interview Officer Dana Pembrose on the subject. There were also a couple of other officers who might well be able to bear witness. Unfortunately I don't have thier names." "I do they gave me a card,if I still have it. Yes here it is." Mrs Pershing handed over the card to Mr Benson. "Thank you this may well prove very useful. At the moment the charge is only assault and battery. I'll need to get witness statements from everyone at the market. Peter I need your version of it complete and honest." Peter gave me a look and I could see where he had been struck. I just nodded to him. "I was working stocking the shelves when he came in and started yelling at me about where the hell was his wife and what have I done with her. I told him that mom was safe away from his drunken ass and then he started in on hitting me. I hit him once, and only once and he went down like a sack of potatoes. By that time the police were there and they took me into custody. You know the rest. I told the police just exactly what I just told you." "Any witnesses to the whole thing?" "I know Mr Fuller was there at the end. I don't know when he showed up,but there were plenty of people and other employees around. I'm sure somebody else must have heard if not seen it all. And dad is known to them as a hot head. He's been thrown out of the market more than once for making a scene." "We need to get the investigators on that angle Mr Jacobs." "Of course and witness statements." "Ok folks here is where we stand at the moment. Peter has been released on his own after his bail was posted. As the posting agency we will be notified if and when any further legal action is needed. In the meantime,Peter, you can't leave the city, you must stay away from your father, when he gets out of the hospital. He is there for observation only at this time. Mrs Pershing,we can't stop you,but it is highly recommened that you not go to see him or try to contact him in any way." "I quite understand." "Will I be allowed to go back to work?" "That is strictly between you and your employer. If I were you I would recommend to Mr Fuller that he get a restrianing order against your father. We will be filing for yours come Monday morning. It is to late to get it before a judge today." "So what do we do now?" "I'm afraid Mr Sawyer that all that you can do is go home and wait. We'll handle all that we can from here. These officers names will go a long way to setting things straight I hope. Peter you are not to speak to anyone about this unless I am present." "Yes sir." The three of us went back out to the car and I would toss Pete my phone. "Call Mr Fuller and find out if you still have a job. Don't use the phone at the house just in case." Pete made the call while we were driving. "I can go back to work tomorrow. Mr Fuller is being very understanding." "Good on him." I turned into my street and saw cars parked out in front of the house. "Oh hell not again. Ok I'm going around the block and dropping you guys off at Karls house. Come on in through the back while I drive back here and distract them." I quickly called Mrs Ohanlon and told her what was up so she wouldn't be surprised. When I pulled into my drive I was quickly surrounded. "I don't know what you people want, but you're trespassing on private property. You have 10 seconds to clear out before I call the police and have you forceably removed." They could see that the car was empty and along with the threat of police, quickly lost interest. I pulled into the garage and shut the door and went into the house. Peter and his mother were hunkered down in the kitchen for the moment. "Mrs Ohanlon, drapes drawn in all rooms please. I don't want some whack job with a telephoto lens getting a lucky shot." "Aye boyo." She was off to do that task. "I don't care how busy Mrs Ohanlon or I are, nobody goes to the front door but me. Pete breath before you pass out. You are going to get through this." "I'm glad one of us thinks so." "That is enough of that kind of thinking young man. You defended yourself and that will come to light I am sure. I doubt very much if your father has anyone who will stand up for him, even if they were physically able." This was the first time I had ever heard grit in Mrs Pershings voice. I liked the sound of it and was glad it wasn't directed at me. "Listen to your mother Pete. It will all work out in the end. We'll have supper and relax for the evening and forget all about this for now. If Mr Benson is half the attorney Mr Jacobs is,charges will end up being filed against your dad." A short time later we had our dinner and were sitting down and getting relaxed when there was a knock at the door. At just about the same time the phone rang. Mrs Ohanlon was still there so I would let her get the phone. I checked to see who was at the door and it was Officer Pembrose. The instant I opened the front door I knew that it wasn't good news.
