What immediately came to mind was that this was the arbitrator trying to catch me off guard. So I made sure I had all of the research I had printed out earlier in my pack before I headed out to the practicum. It was the usual 15 minutes of discussion and the reviews started. I left at that point and made my way over to the student union and grabbed some lunch. I finished that in short order and started to make my way over to the admin building. I had time to kill so I just found a bench and sat down for a few. With 10 minutes to go I headed inside and found the proper room. At the appointed time I knocked on the door. "Come in Mr Sawyer." I opened the door and the man sitting at the desk was exactly whom I expected it to be. "I assume you have a pretty good idea of who I am Mr Sawyer?" "I do Mr Summers." "Well then shall we just get down to it?" "Sounds a plan to me." I sat down and waited for him to start. "I've throughly read the report Mr Ambliss compiled. Is there anything you wish to add to it?" "Have you been told of the recent happenings here on and off campus?" "I have been kept abreast yes." "Then I don't think that there is really anything I can add unless you have specific questions sir." "There is in fact one that I have. Mr Ambliss makes reference to some studies, but I don't see any supporting documentation." I reached into my backpack and pulled out the articles. "I believe that these should suffice in that regard." Mr Summer took the pages and did a quick skim of them. "I shall read these in full later. Seems you came well prepared Mr Sawyer." "I thought it only prudent. This isn't a fight I sought out, but now that I've been drawn into it I do intend to do everything that I can to win it." "Much like your gymnastics competitions I am sure." "To be sure." That simple exchange told me that Mr Summers had done his own type of homework before getting here. It gave me a bit of confidence that whatever his decision it would be well considered. "Well then Mr Sawyer I think we can well send you on your way. Be safe out there." "I certainly intend to try sir." I stood up and we shook hands and I was off. I saw that Kurt was waiting to see Mr Summers next. Kurt gave me a quick look. "I think it is all in good hands Kurt." Which brought a little bit of a smile to his face, just as Mr Summers called him in. So it was back to the car, a quick check and then back to the apartment. There was still a while before Karl would be home, so I settled down with my novel again. Karl gave me a call before he left campus and I got supper started. "So how was your day lover?" "Not quite what I was expecting. I got an email this morning and I met the arbitrator this afternoon after class." "Why don't I like the sound of that?" "Things went a hell of a lot better than I expected. Regardless, I can say that I'm pretty confident this whole thing is going to be resolved in the frats favor." "Which may well drive things into open warfare." "I suppose that's always possible Karl, but I'm sure the administration will have contingencies in place before any type of public announcement is made about the resolution." "I hope to hell they do." We soon had our supper and settled in for the evening. When we did go to bed, it was only to hold each other tonight. Friday and as you would expect we were up and out once again. When we got to campus there weren't any reports of new attacks and our laps were done without incident. "So we getting together for anything tonight Den?" "Doubt it like hell Gordon. Tomorrow is the allday. In fact I won't see you in the morning." We were standing in front of Cochran hall at this point and a rain of trash stared falling around us. We obviously all looked up but couldn't see anyone on the roof. This also hadn't gone unnoticed by others. "Do we even try?" "Whoever did it is probably long gone off of the roof by now. Let's get this cleaned up." I just went to work picking the stuff up and putting it into a barrel. The guys were soon helping, as well as others who had witnessed the incident. It occured to me that this was a pretty stupid thing to do at any time, but with the arbitrator here on campus was a particularly bad time, if he heard about it. Karl and I got back to the apartment and got ready for our day. We went off to our classes, and I don't know about Karl, but I sure was keeping my eyes open. I made it into my first class without any problems and got through it. I headed over to the tax class with Me McEmbers and things started out fine. About half way through the class, smoke started to fill the room. Windows were quickly opened and somebody must have pulled the fire alarm. We all made our way outside, along with everyone else in the building. The fire department was there in short order. Once the building was checked out classes were allowed to resume. Mine was over by that point. I got Mr Mcembers aside before we were both on our way. "So that was pretty intentional I'd have to say. Think that was leveled at you?" "With the fight at the bar, and a few other things that have happened, I wouldn't be surprised." "Have you mentioned this to Dean Evans?" "I have, and on top of everything else, well needless to say he isn't a happy camper." "Any idea what he is going to do about it?" "He hasn't confided in me Dennis." "This isn't likely to be over once the arbitrator rules is it?" "I'm doubting it like hell." "And there's not shit we can do without sinking down to their level, at least not that I can think of and that the Dean will let me do." "He's pretty much tied everybodies hands Dennis, except for the morons who are doing all of this shit." "God help them if Dean Evans can ever pin any of this on anybody." One of the firemen came out of the building at that point and handed something to the chief. "Looks like it was on a timer chief." "So meant to go off specifically when it did. Dean Evans isn't going to like this one bit." "Damn I hope this isn't the straw." "The straw?" "That breaks the camels back and forces the Dean and the board of governors to take what are surely to be some unpopular actions." "I don't think he can let this one go unanswered Dennis. They disrupted classes this time." There was a loud "click" heard as the campus wide pa system was activated. "Your attention please. All students are to return to their rooms at this time. Those living off campus are to return to your residences until further notice. Effective immediately all extraciricular activites are canceled. There will be a curfew in effect from dusk until dawn until further notice. Faculty are to return to your offices and you will be contacted with further instructions. Please comply immediately." "Shit thats torn it." "Get a move on Dennis. There's at least the weekend to work things out." "I hope to hell that's enough time. We're supposed to have a meet next weekend and if we can't practice we're screwed." "If things aren't resolved quickly Dennis, I'm doubting that there will even be a meet, or any other sporting events." "Damn, we'll miss the all state!" "Worry about that later Dennis. You'd best get home for now." "I suppose so." I made my way back to my car and checked it over very carefully this afternoon. I knew Karl would be headed for his car by this point. I called him. "Be sure and check your car really carefully lover. I don't know what you've heard but it was my and Mr McEmbers class that got smoke bombed." "I hadn't heard that Den. Somebody has to be some kind of stupid to pull stunts like this when the arbitrator is on campus." "If they even know. Only other person I saw waiting to see him yesterday was Kurt from the frat. Maybe word hasn't filtered down to them yet." "Always possible love. I'll see you at home in a few." Getting back to the apartment was uneventful and Karl pulled in right behind me. We made our way upstairs. "What the hell do we do now Den?" "Hell if I know until the administration comes out and says something." "And that's likely not going to happen until at least sometime Sunday if then." "And it's not like we can even go to the rec center and workout even. This is going to be one long ass weekend for everybody on campus. We can at least go into town and do things." "If we want to take the risk lover. Remember shit has been happening off campus as well." "True enough. Guess it's going to be a long weekend regardless." "At least we'll be able to keep up with our jogging, even if it is just a couple of times around the block." "Again lover, only if it is safe." "Damn it Karl, I'm not going to stop living because some morons are uncomfortable with gays!" "I'm not asking you to Den. Just don't go giving anybody a free shot." "Holding up in here or at home or wherever sure as hell sounds like surrenedering to my Karl. You damn happy well know that's not my style." "I do lover,I just want you to be damn careful." "I'll even wear the damn kevlar vest if it'll make you happy Karl." "The way things ar going, it would." As long time readers will realize, it is that time of year when I hit the road. So there won't be a chapter next week and there is no cause for alarm. Have a safe summer.
