It would be my word against his,and who do you think they would believe?" "I hear ya Pete. Tell Benson when you see him. They can't bug those conversations by law. You need anything that they'll let me get for you?" "No I'm good. Please don't tell mom, she'll go ballistc." "You think I'm not going to given half a chance?" "Please don't do anything stupid Den." "Didn't I tell you that about 12 hourd ago? Keep refusing, it's only tonight and Sunday. I'm sure we can get you out of here come Monday." At that point an officer came by and tapped Pete on the shoulder. "I've got to go now." "Stay strong Pete." As we were on our way out I saw Officer Pembrose and I motioned him outside. I got Mrs Pershing into the car and went to meet Dana. "Dennis about last night..." "Relax I wasn't going to tell him everything, just what he needed to know. More importantly somebody who was on duty last night tried to convince Pete things would go a lot easier for him if the guy was allowed to fuck him. Dana I won't have it and you know I'll tear the building and the department apart if anything of the sort happens to Pete." I watched the look on Dana's face as I told him about the incident. It went from unhappy to a scowl. "You know who it is don't you?" "Let's say I have a strong suspicion. Pete won't tell you who? No....of course not. Pete would have been led to believe that phones were tapped and he would pay dearly if he told anybody. I'll see what I can do Dennis, but I make no promises." "I can't ask for anymore than that Dana. Take care of him please." I went back to the car and we headed home. "What was all that about Dennis?" "Just a little left over business Mrs Pershing. You heard me tell Pete last night that I had history with Officer Pembrose." "Yes I do remember that." No more was said on the trip back to my house. When we got there,Stan was waiting for us. "Mrs Pershing,I just wanted you to know that we will hold your position in the class for you until things are all settled. Take all of the time you need." "Oh the class! It was the furthest thing from my mind. Thank you Mr Holtz. I do appreciate that." "Oh damn, Nobody has called Mr Fuller I'll wager?" "Thank you for reminding me Dennis. I'll take care of that right now. I do know he is there on Saturdays." Mrs Pershing excused herself and headed for a phone, and Stan headed home as well. "What's wrong boyo? Ya look like ya want ta strangle somebody?" "Nothing that I can do anything about Mrs Ohanlon and I would damn sure like to." The rest of the day passed without incident,as did Sunday, with no visitation possible. Monday morning I seriously thought about calling Mr Bellows and telling him I wanted to postpone getting things started. Mrs Pershing insisted that I follow through with my job. Either the lawyers or Mrs Ohanlon could take her to get Pete if needs be. So here I was standing in front of the building at 9am ready to go inside and start work. I owned the damn place,so why was I as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs? I went into the lobby and presented Mrs Daniels with the letter Mr Bellows had sent me. With a wink she dialed a number and soon a gentleman appeared from around the wall. "Welcome to Sawyer and Associates Dennis I'm Mr Anderson, but call me Bob. Come along with me and we'll get you punched in." I followed Bob back into the main room and through a side door. I was given a name badge with a mag strip on it and shown the time clock. We then went to the mailroom itself. "Some people think the front office is where all the work gets done Dennis, but we do our fair share back here. The is Alan. He is going to show you the ropes around here." "Another newbie? Geez Bob when am I suppose to get my work done?" "Don't let him fool you Dennis. Alan's been with us for a long time and will probably have my job in a few years." "Damn Bob take away all of my fun why don't you? Hi Dennis welcome aboard." He stuck his hand out and I shook it. A firm grip but not one meant to intimidate. "So where do we start?" "We start with the early delivery and pickup. Follow me." We circulated through the whole building making stops at various offices and individual brokers as needed. The delivery cart was all segmented off so this was an easy thing to do. We also picked up the various letters and large envelopes that needed to be sent out, then made our way back to the mail room. "Bob takes care of metering the postage,we just have to deliver it to him. The next thing we have to do is grab the shipping list. We hold onto any number of prospectives that we can mail out for the brokers in the front room." Alan lead me over to a wall that was sectioned off and arranged alphabetically. "Just look for the name of the company, pull the copy, slap it in an envelope, put the address label on the outside and the slip on the inside and get it to Bob for postage. That's pretty much all you really need to know. We will sometimes run errands for the big shots, but only with Bobs approval. You have a car?" "Yeah it's in the lot." "Good that will make things easier. Next mail delivery is around noon. Until then we just fill these orders. I'll show you how we sort the mail when it comes in." It would be just about noontime when my phone rang. "Boyo, the lawyers just called. There's been a fight in the station and Peter has been taken to the ER."
