Can you get his mother over there and I'll be there as quick as I can." "Right boyo." I went to Bob to tell him I had an emergency. "First Day on the job? Not good kid." "Talk to Mister Bellows on the QT." Which got a set of raised eyebrows from Bob. I went and punched out and headed for the ER. Mrs Pershing and Mrs Ohanlon got there at the same time I did and we were promptly held up by an officer. "Where the hell do you think you're going?" "Mrs Pershing is going to see her son and I am accompanying her." "Who the hell do you think you are?" "I am your worst nightmare officer. I am the citizen who is going to rip the Police Department a new asshole." I felt hands on my shoulders. "Easy Dennis it isn't officer Carlisles fault. He's just following orders and procedures." "Somebody sure as hell didn't and I want him hung up by his shorthairs Dana!" At that moment a doctor came out of the room behind us. "Mr Sawyer will you please hold it down. I see you're back in fine shape." I recognized the doctor who had first spoken to me when I woke up. "Dr you take good care of him,and......I want a rape kit done on him." "Dennis what on earth?" "I'm sorry Mrs Pershing,Pete asked me not to tell you. He was told that things would go a lot easier for him if he allowed himself to be engaged in intercourse." Officer Carlisles got a scowl on his face. Dana's suspicion seemed to be widespread. "Dennis I'll ask him and do it if he was. Right now he has assorted bruises and a couple of cracked ribs. I'm going to have to wrap him to protect those ribs." "You do whatever is needed doc and I'll cover it." "Dennis you don't..." "Do you have insurance Mrs Pershing?" "Well....no." Mr Benson would arrive at that point. "Mr Benson, does Peter have an actionable grievance against the police department and the city?" "From what I've heard he does. But even with this there is good news. Peter will be released and no charges filed. The coroner ruled natural causes, acute alcoholism. According to what he told me there was no way that Mr Pershing should have been ambulatory let alone taking a swing at anyone." "Peter will be relieved to hear that. Does he have to go back to the station?" "Just to get processed out and collect his belongings." "Ok,next order of business,Mrs Pershing, was there any life insurance?" "No,nothing like that at all that I know of." "Did he have any specific final wishes?" "I know he did want to be cremated and scattered to the sea." "Mr Benson, can arrangements be made?" "Not a problem. Do I proceed to draw up papers against the city?" "I'll let you know after I get a chance to talk to Peter." "That won't be for a while I'm afraid. I've given him something for the pain and to sleep. Oh Mr Sawyer he says no but the guy who treatened.." "Doc,not here please." As far as I was concerned there were to many ears around for that accusation to be made. "Can we stay with him?" "Of course if the officer will allow it." "I'm sorry I can't. My orders are nobody..." "Your orders are rescinded officer." "Yes chief." Officer Carlisle would leave at that point. "Chief,Mr Sawyer,Mrs Pershing and Mr Benson,Esquire" "Thank you Officer Pembrose. Mrs Pershing,Mr Sawyer Mr Benson let me assure you that I already have IA looking into what happened here. When I have answers so will you." Mr Benson would step forward. "About that Chief, can I have a few words with you?" Pete's mother and I would go into the room with the doctor. "Now Doc you were about to give me a name I believe?" "Yes Peter said something about an Officer Higgins. Not quite sure what that has to do with anything." "I do. Thank you doc. Anything we should do for Pete if he wakes up while we're here?" "Just don't let him go straining himself. Otherwise just let him rest. The sleeping meds should wear off in about 6 hours." "Thanks Doc." The doctor left, but Dana would appear in the doorway. "I'll be right back Mrs Pershing." I went out into the hall to speak to Officer Pembrose. "He said he wasn't raped but did name an Officer Higgins." "I suspected as much. If asked now do you think he will testify?" "I don't know. He may well be thinking ahead to if there is a next time." "If this was a setup there'll be somebody who'll spill their guts." "Nail his ass to the wall Dana." "I'll nail and brand it Dennis." Officer Pembrose left and I returned to Peters room. Mrs Pershing and I stayed with Pete until he came around. "Damn my side hurts." "And it is likely to for several days Pete, just relax and take it easy." "I don't think I have much of a choice Den unless I'm headed back to the lockup." "Only to precess you out and get your stuff." "No Charges?" "Coroner ruled it natural causes. You're free as a bird." "Then we can move back to the apartment." "Not without money coming in you can't. As far as I know there's no survivors benefits that go with unemployment payouts." "Well at least we can go and get some of our things." "Now that seems doable." "Pete you want to press charges against the city?" "I don't think so. I don't think this was anything planned and if it was planned they still have to prove it. If that comes true, then maybe. Any idea how long I'm going to need to stay here?" "I'd imagine overnight at least. Your ribs were cracked but not broken. How ever long it is don't worry about it." "ledger?" "Unless the city stands for it. You were in custody." I heard someone come into the room and saw a sudden look of panic in Pete's eyes.
