What the hell else did these guys have up their sleeves? I must have finally dropped off as the alarm was going off in my ear. I jumped into the shower as Karl got ready to go jogging with the guys. I took my car and got to the team breakfast just as our guys were going through the line. We all sat down across from the other team and not a word was spoken. More like scowls were traded back and forth over the table. Normally after the team breakfast when we were at home, I found someplace to hangout until it was time for us to warm up. Today I headed for the Rec Center. I wanted to watch these guys warm up if I could. As it turned out I couldn't so it was into the locker room where a few of the guys were hanging already. I did notice that every one of our equipment bags had a lock on it. It finally came time for our warmup and Crookshank was confined to the locker room. We all stretched out and did our basic warm up. I did notice that Coach Connors was going around checking each piece of apparatus. I didn't think that any of the guys from Crookshank would have messed with the equipment and possibly get themselves hurt. We headed back into the locker room and they opened the doors for the public to come into the hall. I was off in my corner getting my head together so hardly noticed. When we did take the floor I noticed that there was a fair amount of Crookshank colors in the bleachers. Opening ceremonies were held and we paired off. It just so happened that I ended up being with the guy I had seen flinch at the felony charge last night. Today the vault was my first station. I moved to the run up area and I was about to start my run up when somebody yelled "Rapist!" The official stopped me and I stepped back, and everything else came to a halt as well. The person was quickly idetified and removed from the hall. I watched as the senior official took the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, any further displays or demonstrations will result in the immediate nullification and stoppage of this meet with a loss being entered for both teams in the records." Which was greeted with a stony silence from the crowd. I hoped that put an end to things. I was given the go ahead and did my run up to a double somersault in tuck which I landed solidly. The guy I was with had the same vault but stepped out of his landing. My second vault was a double with a twist in layout, which I again landed fairly solidly. The other guy did the same vault as before, but did land it this time. It was on to the high bar and I threw my triple as planned and landed with only a slight wobble. I watched the guy and his routine was fairly solid, but I could see where it looked like he was going to shoot for a triple dismount. He not only didn't make the third rotation, but when he landed he stumbled out of his landing and went to his knees. His coach was right there as you would expect him to be. The guy got up and walked away to the sidelines and didn't appear to injured at all. We moved on to the parrallel bars. Both of our routines were solid here, but I did notice a slight look of pain cross the guys face on his landing. If I hadn't been looking right at him I doubt I would have noticed. We moved on to rings and I looked to Coach Connors and he didn't even take a look at the board before shaking his nead no. Before I made my approach to the rings I heard the crowd erupt in applause. I looked over at the high bar and saw Josh waving to the crowd. I knew he must have landed his own triple at that point. I got onto the rings and started my routine. I worked it as smoothly as I could and then threw the double somersault dismount and landed it solid. The guy from Crookshank moved to take his place and got up onto the rings. His routine was a bit more difficult than mine and he also threw a double for his dismount, but once again went to his knees. This time when he got up he limped to the sideline. His coach was there and he ended up calling an official over. The guy was taken off of the floor and the first substitue was brought in. He gave me one of those"now you're going to see how it's done" looks. I didn't respond. It was now on to the pommel horse. I worked my normal routine and moved on to a solid dismount. The substitute moved into position and did his own routine which had a slightly higher degree of difficulty, but in the end he had a poor dismount which more than wiped out the difficulty advantage. It was finally on to the floor excercise. I again looked to Coach Connors. This time he did scan the board before he thought for a moment before nodding in the affirmative. I focused totally on my routine and moved through each move in a very deliberate manner, while still maintaining the flow of it. My first tumbling run was complete my floor and flair work completed as well. The second tumbling run done solidly. More floor moves across the mat and the setup for my final tumbling run and then I was up and into the triple. Once, twice, third time around and I spotted my landing and stuck it. A few more floor moves and I was done. The place exploded with applause and cheering. As I made my acknowledgements I saw that Greg was at the high bar position and looking pretty damn happy with himself. I concluded he had thrown his triple and landed it. I moved off of the mat and let the guy from Crookshank have his go. I'll say this for the guy he was solid in his performance but it wasn't enough. I looked up at the scoreboard and it was easy to see that with Josh and Greg both landing their triples and me landing both of mine that we had taken this meet. It was confirmed a few minutes later and our guys went nuts and stormed the floor. Quite a few people went to Josh and Greg this time before they came to me, and that was just fine by me. They had done just as much to help take the meet as anybody. The guys all got to me about the same time. "Don't see why you were so worried about this meet Dennis." "Their reputation preceeded them Susan. I've a feeling their own tactics did them in." "Meaning what?" "Somebody on our team found a felony charge hanging over one of their guys and dropped that on them last night. From the reactions I saw the Crookshank team had no idea." It took a few minutes but once order was restored the awards presentation was made and we all glad handed folks for a bit before we retired to the showers. We all got over to Cochran hall to see the Crookshank team off. We once again offered to shake hands and they all just passed us by and boarded the bus. Well, it was their first loss of the season, you'd expect them to be down. "Well gentlemen, that just leaves us three more meets, one away and two here. The last one is somebody new to the conference so there's no track record except for this season. Olivette University is their name. So far they've had a so so season. Kilbride is up next and after that Dresmere. They're both doing fairly well this season at 4 and 1 each at this point. They'll both be tough. So try and stay healthy and keep your grades up." "Yes coach," was the only reply. Karl and I each drove back to the apartment. I changed out of my street uniform and into some regular clothes. "Go out for an early supper Den?" "Yeah I could eat. How about the buffet?" "Works for me." We headed for the mall and the asian buffet. When we got there it was fairly busy for a change, not that we saw anyone we recognized. As always the food was plentiful and hot,my two basic requirements for a good meal. We hit the store for groceries while we were there and got stocked back up on things. We were soon back to the apartment and once things were put away we crashed in front of the tv for a couple of hours and then it was to bed after a long day. Sunday morning and we were off to campus for our laps with the guys. I got a few well dones while we were jogging this morning. Karl and I got back to the house and cleaned up for the day and settled into getting our school work done. We did break for lunch and then got back to it until Cam and Paul showed up for dinner. Naturally the talk turned to the meet. "What were you guys so worried about Dennis? You guys took that meet pretty easily." "I think that was more because their tactics backfired on them." "Come again?" "You heard the rumor that I was accused of raping a child. Well somebody went digging and found a pending felony manslaughter charge hanging over one of the Crookshank guys head. That bomb was dropped Friday night when they got here and started talking trash. From their reactions nobody on the Crookshank team had any idea. They were thinking about that and not the meet. It's what we were trying to avoid with our own team." It was pretty general conversation after that and once things were cleared from the table, Karl and I headed upstairs for the night. Monday we were up and out with the guys and then back and made ready for the day. Classes were gotten through with a minimum of grief and I was home and getting something ready for supper. I decided to check my email while things were cooking. Right at the top of the listing was one from the lawyers. I had a damn good idea of what the contents were and I hesitated to open it. I decided to wait for Karl to get home as this was going to greatly affect our life one way or the other.
