"Let me guess, they're not going to let me compete until the murder case is solved." "That pretty much sums it up Dennis. Even if you've already been cleared." "Which I have. Will a statement from the police department help any?" "It may Dennis." I turned around and went back into the locker room and changed back into my street clothes and went to my car. I did think to check it over before I took off. I got to the police station and went inside and explained what I needed to the desk officer. "Have a seat Mr Sawyer and I'll see what I can do for you." It only took about an hour and I was handed an envelope. "That should take care of things for you Mr Sawyer. A notorized copy is being sent to the school as well, but will take a couple of days." "Much appreciated officer." I headed back to the car and did check it over even though it was in the police lot. I was still going to be home before Karl so there wasn't a phone call needed. I got back to the apartment and got something going for supper. Karl showed up not that long after. "How come you're home so early lover?" "I had to make a trip to the police station. Coach told me I couldn't compete until the murder case was solved, or until I was at least cleared. I went and got a statement to the effect and they are sending a copy to the school as well." "I can see with only a little over 2 weeks until the next meet where you might want to get that settled quickly lover." "Yeah well I'll show this to coach tomorrow or Saturday and hope that's enough. There's a notorized copy on the way to the school, but probably won't be here until Monday." "Yeah loosing one day of practice this close to a meet is bad enough but 2 or more could make the difference." "Damn right Karl. So if I'm allowed I'll probably stay and work out tomorrow and put in a goodly amount of time on Saturday." "Like I should expect anything less from you. You're going to be working that hard I'm thinking Riskins for supper tomorrow." "Works for me lover." We had our supper and then hit the books and eventually sacked out. Bright and early the alarm was going off in my ear and we were up and out to our jogging. Karl and I did get a few looks this morning but we tried to ignore them. Back to the apartment and we got ready for the remainder of the day. Investment Vehicles wasn't a problem but at the end of the Taxation class Mr McEmbers called me over. "Missed you on Wednesday Dennis, and I've heard the rumor. so?" "Just that my car matches the one used in the robbery and the first 3 characters of the license are the same. I've been cleared." "To bad that information hasn't been spread around." "As far as I know the college hasn't received their copy of the notification yet." I did show him the copy I had for coach. "Well I hope that straightens things out for you Dennis." "So do I." I headed over to the student union to get some lunch and then out to my bench. Pete was the first to stop. "You holding up Den?" "Yeah I'll be fine. I just hope the college gets the word that I've been cleared so I can compete at the next meet." "I'm sure they will Den. Later." The next one to stop by was who I was hoping would show up, Bob Watson. "So no need to ask the question is there Dennis?" "Nope. I've been cleared and the school should get the notification by Monday I should think. I can show you the copy they gave me if you need evidence?" "Your word is good enough for me Dennis, but if you have a copy it couldn't hurt for me to see it." I showed the copy to him and he made a few notes from it. "It just occured to me that you're not going to have anybody to write about next year Bob." "Oh I'll find something or someone to write about Dennis. You've just been to good to pass up." "Well let's hope the last story you get to write about me has me taking the gold at the all state." "A story I'd be more than happy to write." Carlton was next on the hit parade. "Dennis?" "All bullshit and I've been cleared." "Thought as much, later." Then it was off to Risk/Rewards. There weren't any problems there and so I headed for the Rec Center. Even before I went to change up I found coach and showed him the letter. "Well. I can't stop you from practiceing Dennis, but I have to wait for it to be official before I can allow you to compete." "Understood coach and that should be here by Monday." "Then go get to it." I changed up and went to stretch out and got a few looks from some of the guys, but nothing was said. It was an open practice so I only threw the triples for the high bar and the floor excercise now that it had been revealed that I had it. Coach didn't have any notes for me, so I went and hit the pool and then the whirlpool. Dana was sitting there when I arrived. "So Dennis, any truth?" "That I was involved in the robbery and the subcequent death? None what so ever and the official notification should reach the school by Monday according to the police department." "Good enough for me Den. It's going to be awfully dull around here after we graduate." "Oh I'm sure they'll be somebody to step up and keep things interesting." "Whoever they are they're going to have a hell of a time outdoing you." "Probably, but I'm sure somebody or something will crop up." Dana left a couple of minutes later and I had the whirlpool to myself until I left. A good hot shower and a quick checkover of the car and a call to Karl and I was on my way home. I quickly went upstairs and changed into some better clothes and Karl and I hit the road to Riskins. Even with it being a Friday night, we got into Riskins with no problem. We had been often enough at this point that all of the waitstaff knew there was no need to offer us a before dinner drink. We didn't hurry through supper, so it was a bit on the late side when we left. We were on our way back to the apartment and pulled up at a stop light. Suddenly I heard a burlar alrm ringing and a few seconds later a car very similar to mine took the corner if front of us. "Damnation! Get on your phone lover I'm going to try to follow them." "You have got to be out of your mind!" "We've got no alibi this time Karl. Make the call!" I took off after the car and tried not to be obvious about it, seeing as whoever they were played it smart and were not racing away from the scene. Karl made the call and stayed on the phone to relay our position. It only took a few minutes for a black and white to roll up behind us and pull us over. I was encouraged to see another black and white pass us and go after the other car. We could see where they got pulled over further down the road. "You guys stay here until they clear the scene down there." So Karl and I sat there and waited. We had only been there a few seconds when we saw flashes from down the street. Something hit the windsheild and I assumed it was a bullet. "Get down!" Karl and I both dove for the center of the car to get the bulk of the engine and dash between us and any bullets. The police car that had stopped us took off. I peeked over the dash ro see that the other guys had gotten back in their car and had taken off. I could see that the guys who had stopped us were right at the scene and torn about what to do. I quickly pulled up behind them. "Get after those bastards!" I grabbed the microphone from one of the officers that was down. "Officers down! Officers down! Corner of Main and Woodland." I quickly heard the report repeated over the radio. Karl and I both rendered what first aid we could, which really only amounted to keeping pressure on the wounds. We heard several sirens converging on our location. When the first car showed up we were ordered to put our hands in the air. and we complied. Shortly after that paramedics showed up and right behind them an ambulance. Karl and I in the meantime had been handcuffed and stuffed into the backseat of one of the cars. Eventually a detective got to us and put forth the obvious question. "What happened here?" I proceeded to tell him the whole thing. "I can also do you one better than just the telling if you'll uncuff me and allow me access to my car." I was uncuffed and I downloaded the camera from the car to my phone and played it for the detective. Karl and I were released and thanked for our time. "You boys should stop by the hospital and get yourselves checked out just to be sure. Your car isn't safe to drive. Is there anyone you can call?" "Plenty of people. Can I at least pull it into that lot?" "Yes sir." I pulled the car into the lot and called Pete first. It went straight to voice mail, so I called Aiden and explained to him what was going on. "We'll be there in about 15 Den."
