I went out and checked the car, gave Karl his call and then headed for the apartment. "So did coach have anything to say?" "Yeah, he received a notice that the last meet is under review." "Any idea why?" "Nope. We're thinking it is some kind of head game." "The chances being?" "As good as for anything else at this point." "So anything else said today?" "Not by the coach, but I did put forth an idea to Dana." "Oh?" "Yeah was just thinking that we might organize some activities for the team for the week between the end of year and the all state. So as not to have idle minds to be played with. I even volunteered to help fund it." "Something that will have to be run by the coaches I'm sure." "Yeah but participation will be strictly voluntary. I know some of the guys are just going to want to kick back for the week." "And you're thinking the team bus to get them around?" "No I figured there's enough guys with cars to do that. Push comes to shove we rent a extra long passenger van." "I doubt it will come to that Den, like you said there are enough guys with cars I'm sure. Think the coach will go for it?" "No idea, but Dana seems to like the idea. Supper almost ready? " "Yeah just about." I went and got our table set and once supper was over I helped Karl clean up. Then it was bookwork for a few hours before we crashed. Wednesday and we were up and at it again. Once classes were done I just headed back to the apartment and got something going for supper, and waited for Karl to get there. "Anything special happen today Den?" "Not for me, you?" "Nope pretty standard day." So supper was had and Karl settled into his bookwork and I reviewed my portfolios and soon enough we were sacked out. Thursday started just as many of them had before with our laps and what not. Back to the apartment and once cleaned up and fed Karl was off to class and I hung around and got a few things done before I headed in. I stayed for the discussion and then headed over to the student union for my lunch and bench time. Pete and Susan stopped for a few between class. "I finally got a chance to look at your photos Den. Those Lambo's sure looked sweet." "They were, and if we had a track near home where I could let one out every once in a while I might even consider one." "Damn those things go for what?" "Depending on the model north of $200K. I could do it, but not without a lot of thought." "Not to mention that a car like that would be a target for every hotwire artist in the county." "That to, not to mention the insurance." "Well later Den. We've got to get to class." Not long after that I headed over to the rec center and got changed up for practice. It wasn't a mandatory so I had to wait until somebody else showed up to spot me. As luck would have it, Greg and Josh were the first ones there. We took turns spotting each other and sure as death and taxes I had to catch Greg. Much to my surprise there was no stiffening of the body this time. It was just as if anybody else had caught him; which had me glad that Greg at least had gotten over my being gay. Nothing was said by either of us and we just kept on working. We all hit every station today and by the time we were done a goodly number of the rest of the squad had shown up. I soon headed for the pool and I don't know what Greg and Josh did, but they were gone by the time I made it to the whirlpool. A couple of the other guys had not. I slipped in and naturally the topic turned to what might be going on with the review. "Hell Jack, I thought we all decided to forget about this until something concrete shows up?" "What can I say Den. It's there in the back of my head and it has me damn worried." "Hey, not our problem remember? Think about it for a second. If we were the ones under the microscope, we'd be putting up with a bunch of shit from somebody. Nothing has been leveled at us. If it had been we sure as hell would be hearing a hell of a lot more about it." "Yeah I suppose so. I wonder just what the hell is going on though?" "I'm sure we'll hear about it when the review is done one way or the other. Until then forget about it." "Like I said, easier said than done." "Well try anyway." We all soaked for a few minutes more than headed out. "Anything special today Den?" "Other than some of the guys still worrying about the review, no." "Some of the guys? Who are you kidding lover, they're all thinking about it whether they admit it or not." "Probably. Hell it's still in the back of my mind." "And I take it there hasn't been any information turn up?" "Not a word as far as I know, though I'm pretty damn sure it was nothing that we did." "Then why the hell is everybody so bent over it?" "Hell if I know Karl. Far as I'm concerned it's just a head game somebody is trying to pull. It's going to stay that way right up until I hear otherwise from the coach. We almost ready to eat?" "Yeah in just a couple." We soon ate and got things cleaned up and then it was bookwork for the rest of the evening. Friday morning we were up and at it once again. So it was over to campus, laps run and then back to the apartment. We got cleaned up, fed, and out to class. The first two classes were gotten through and I headed on over to the student union for lunch. When I got out to my bench today it was Gary of all people who stopped by. "You heard the latest rumor yet?" "Haven't been really listening Gary. Waiting on the real word from the coach, but what have you heard?" "That one of the guys on their squad was a paid ringer." "Sounds damn unlikely to me." "But not impossible." "Gary, just wait for coach to give us the word and stop driving yourself nuts. By the way, how are the treatments going?" "Yeah I suppose so. Doc says he is still seeing definite improvement. By the time he is done my back should be as straight as yours." "Good to hear." "Later Den." Greg and Josh were there as Gary got on his way. "Was that Gary just now? What new theory did he have?" "It was and the theory doesn't even bear repeating. Like I told Gary, wait for coach to tell us what the hell is going on." "Yeah pretty much what we had decided to do ourselves. See you tomorrow Den." Finally it was time to head over to my last class. With about a month and a half left to go in the school year, we had just about covered everything in the book. I wondered just what we would do for the rest of the year once everything was covered? Risk/Rewards was over and I headed back to the apartment for the day. I checked on something for supper and got it going. While that was going on I started my bookwork for next week. With the allday tomorrow I doubted like hell that I was going to want to do it tomorrow night. Karl was soon home. "So, any news yet?" "No news but I did hear one rumor today, which I'm doubting pretty much." "That being?" "That at least one of the guys on their team was a paid pro." "Yeah not very likely." "Supper's up in 5." We soon enough had eaten and gotten things cleaned up and it was back to the books for a couple of hours before we sacked out. Saturday morning and when the alarm went off we could easily hear the rain coming down. Karl and I both rolled over for a couple of more hours of sleep. When it was finally time for me to get up so I could make it to the allday, it was down to a drizzle. Karl and I had our breakfast and I gave myself some extra time to head into campus. When I got out to the floor to stretch out, I could see that the coaches were in a little bit of a huddle and when they broke it, they both had a bit of a grin on their faces. Soon enough we got down to business and we ran it all team format. It was a closed practice so everybody threw all of thier triples today. From what I could see we were all in top form. We broke for lunch and again evrybody headed for the student union for lunch. After lunch it was back to the apparatus room and another full run through. Coach finally called us all in. "Well gentlemen, if you can all keep this up we will be in excellent shape for the allstate, let alone this last meet. Now I know you have all been concerned about the review of the Dresmire meet. Well we finally got the word yesterday. It seems that one of the guys on the Dresmire team was found to have been on the juice as they say. What took them so long to come to a conclusion was that it was one of the alternates. There were two schools of thought about it. On one hand they didn't actually compete so had no bearing on the outcome of the meet. On the other hand there was the potential for them to have influenced the outcome if they had ended up on the floor. The governing body debated this for well over a week. By the strictest imterpretation of the rules, they were on the team and so listed on all of the forms. The rules state 'any member of the team'. So the long and the short of it is that Dresmire was disqualified and the meet went to us. So we techincally, at this point, will be going into our final meet of the season unbeaten."
