When these guys got off of the bus they were all wearing identical blazers with the school seal on them. Gary was once again acting as host. "Welcome to state gentelmen. I'm Gary and you'll all be staying here in Cochran hall." As Gary was giving his little speech we all shook hands with the Olivette team. Though they all had smiles on their faces, there wasn't a lot said as Gary got them sorted out to their rooms. I headed back to the apartment and a late supper with Karl. "So how did they look?" "Oh they all looked very nice in their matching blazers. Just because they look good though doesn't mean they are." "Was anything said?" "Not that I heard. Matter of fact they were damn quiet." "Think their coach had anything to do with that? "Always a possibility. Let's eat so I can crash out for the night." We were in bed rather early and come the morning we were both up and out. Karl to go jogging and me to get over to the team breakfast. These guys weren't any more talkative over breakfast than they had been last night, even with each other. We finally went over for our warm up and then it only remained for people to get into the venue. When we did take the floor, there were hardly any Olivette colors to be seen. Opening ceremonies were taken care of and we all paired up. I ended up starting at the vault today. I did look to coach and he gave me a negative so it was just a double somersault dismount today. The guy from Olivette did attempt a triple but took several steps out of his landing. As always I was only paying attention to what was going on in front of me. We both did well with our second vaults, but this time my opponent only went for a double. We moved on to the pommel horse and I went through my routine without any problems. The guy from Olivette was strong here as well. On to the parrallel bars and we both had good routines here. Rings and again coach gave me a negative. The other guy had a strong routine and didn't even attempt a triple here. On to the high bar and I didn't even bother looking to coach and when I did my triple, I stuck the landing. My opponent had a strong routine here as well and did manage to land a triple, but not as solidly as I had. Finally we were to the floor. I went and did my routine and threw the triple and had a bit of a wobble on my landing. It happens to the very best so I wasn't worried about it. The other guy worked his way through his routine and it was a strong performance, but he only threw a double at the end. I could now look at the scoreboard. I had bested my guy across the board. I took a good look at the board and knew we had won this one. Not that Olivette hadn't put up a fight, and a damn good one to boot if I were reading the board right. Ceremonies were soon taken care of and we all hit the showers and were over to Cochran hall to see these guys off. They still didn't have a thing to say as they boarded their bus. The guys were there by now as well. "Damn Den, you said they didn't have a lot to say, but that was just creepy." "Maybe that was their strategy, to creep us out." "Didn't work for shit this time." "Nope. Hit the cafeteria for lunch?" "We're right here, might as well." By the time we got our food and sat down the whole group was there. "I didn't see a whole lot of support for those guys today." "Neither did I Susan. This being their first year though I wouldn't have expected much though." "I suppose not." "They did put up a good fight though Den, at least from what I could see." "Yeah they did Pete, a hell of a lot better than I though they would. I've got a feeling that next year they'll be real contenders." "What makes you think that Den?" "They've got a seasons worth of experience now. I'm betting they learned something to use every meet this year whether they won or lost." "So just the shear experience?" "Yep. I didn't check, but I'll bet their victories came later in the season, after they got used to the 'pressure'." "So after finals it's of to the all state again." "That it is Pete, and I'm hoping to go all the way this year." "You unleash those other triples and I have little doubt." "Thanks Aiden. See you in the morning." Karl and I headed back to the apartment and just zoned out for the rest of the day. Sunday morning and we were up and out with the guys. Once we were back to the apartment and ready for the day, it was book work until it was time to go down to dinner with the Castanzas once again. When I heard the gate open and I knew the guys were here. "It's that time again Karl." "Yeah I suppose." We got down and helped set the table and naturally the talk turned to the meet. "So they were tougher than you thought they would be Dennis?" "Somewhat, yes sir. With the record they had I expected them to be an easy win for us. But like I told the guys yesterday, I believe their wins came later in the season after they got some real experience under their belts." "So you think they will be a tougher opponent next year?" "As you said last week, if I were a betting man, I'd count on it." We eventually got through with supper and Karl and I went back upstairs after we helped clear the table. Karl and I both usually left our phones up in the apartment when we went down to supper, simply out of courtesy. When I picked mine up it told me I had one missed call. I checked to see if the caller ID had recorded it and it was from Drake. I hit the dial. "Hey brother, guess you were busy earlier." "Yeah I was, so what up?" "Just calling to congradulate you on another win, and we heard about the decision and the Dresmire meet. So that means you go into the all state undefeated." "Technically, yeah, though it was one of the alternates that never actually competed so Dresmire did in fact beat us." "That fact didn't make it into the report I saw." "What can I say. Anyway am I going to see you for the all state? Not that I'll likely have a lot of time to socailize." "We're all planning on it." "Then stay safe until then. Say hi to dad, your mom, and Doug for me." "Will do. Later." "Sounds like your little brother is keeping tabs on you?" "Looks that way and I can't say as I really mind. Kinda nice actually. I just hope when the time comes that they can get along with the rest of our family." "Somehow I don't think it is going to be a problem love." "I sure as hell hope not." We had both finished our book work before we had gone down to supper, so we just laid back in front of the tube until it was bedtime. Monday morning and it wasn't the alarm that woke me up, but my phone ringing. "Hello?" "Hey Den. Don't bother coming to class this morning. Campus is closed. If you haven't realized yet, the power is out all over town." "Any idea what the hell happened?" "None seeing as nobody has a battery operated radio." "Use the damn phone. If you can make a call it should still get internet. Hell I'll do it myself. Talk to you later Gordon." I hung up and went to the net and tried the local news feed. A truck had pretty much taken out a sub station. They didn't know how long it was going to take to repair. Attempts were being made to reroute power. "Frigging great! We can't even make any breakfast or any other meals for who knows how long." "Take a deep breathe lover, we'll be fine. Think the mall has their own backup generators?" "Probably, why?" "Well first off there's the food court, but I'm thinking we hit Wally World soonest and grab a propane cook stove and some canisters. We'll have to set it up outside, but we'll at least be able to have hot meals." We quickly threw some clothes on, but then realized that we couldn't get out of the security gate. I called Paul real quick. "We can't get a car out of the security gate. Can you get over here and give us a lift to the mall?" "Be there in just a few." Karl and I scrambled over the wall and when Paul pulled up Cam was of course with him. "What's the big deal with getting to the mall?" "Going to try and score a camp stove before they run out so we can at least have hot meals. Maybe some battery lanterns as well." When we pulled into the mall, it was obvious that we weren't the only ones with that idea. The line for Wally World was short so we got into it. They were making annoucements while we waited. They were going to limit the sale of certain items. One stove per person, and two tanks of fuel. Lanterns and other battery operated devices were one to a customer. "Okay guys when we get in there everybody grab a lantern and the batteries to go with it. I'll grab a stove and two tanks, Karl you grab two tanks as well. Cam, grab the biggest cooler you can find and fill it with ice." We were going to pass an ATM before we got into the store and I hoped like hell that the thing was working.
