With what we had in our pockets already we should be covered. Shortly after we got inside and split up to get whatever we could. Karl had the presence of mind to get us some bottled water and a load of canned food. We lucked out and got everything we were hoping for and finally got ourselves back to the car. Along the way we were offered outrageous amounts of money for our stash from those at the end of the line or just pulling in. We got back to the apartment to find out that Mr Castanza had done us one better and pulled a gas barbeque out from the garage. "Well gentlemen I have coffee going here and some ham and eggs will be ready shortly, though it looks as though you will well be able to fend for yourselves." "Just means we're ready for the next time." "Well I'm confident we'll have power before the end of the day." "I certainly hope so. We'll be back down in a few minutes." Karl and I and the guys got everything up to the apartment. I was going to wait a few hours before getting stuff out of the fridge, hoping that we would get lucky and regain power sooner rather than later. WE all went back down and had breakfast with the Castanzas. The day pretty much dragged on without classes to go to. It got to be later on in the afternoon and I was seriously considering getting stuff into the cooler, when the one light I had turned on flickered and then came on strong. I had turned off a lot of the electrical stuff so there wouldn't be a massive hit when the power came back and a danger of popping circuit breakers and damaging stuff. First thing back on was the fridge, then the ac and the hot water heater. I got the tv on and looked for the local news. Power was being restored all over town and it was expected to hold. While we still had power I went an reviewed my portfolio for tomorrow as I was sure classes would be back in session. Karl was right across from me working on his own studies. It wasn't quite a month until finals and neither one of us had any intentions of screwing up our school year. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful and once we were done with our studies we pretty much just kicked back until we crashed. Tuesday it was back to the regular grind. Laps were run and we got back to the apartment and got ourselves ready for the day. I took the time to get things stored away in case we had need of them at some future time. Draining the cooler was a pain and there was still some ice left in it. Eventually it was time for me to head into the practicum. When it was time to start, it wasn't Mr Caruthers who walked through the door, but someone whom I had never seen before. "Good Morning. Mr Caruthers is indisposed this morning and may well be until the end of the term. I'm Mr Adams and I'll be seeing you through to the end of term." The usual discussion was held and then we got on to the reviews. As usual I was last. "Mr Sawyer, I am familiar with your history young man. Now let's take a look see at your portfolio." He spent quite a few minutes looking over everything. "You did this all on your own?" "Yes sir." "I don't happen to believe you Mr Sawyer. Your ROI to date is just too good." "Mr Adams, I give you my word of honor that I used only open resources to compile this portfolio. All of my notes are there and if you will take the time to follow them through you will see that I simply did my homework before I made my purchases. I will admit to having done the same excercise for an apprenticeship program last summer so I did have some experience going into it." "I don't happen to believe you Mr Sawyer, and I don't see you passing this practicum. Good day young man." I could see there wasn't going to be any convincing this guy. Instead of my usual trip over to the student union, I headed for a quiet place to think. Just what were my options here? If I didn't pass the practicum, I wouldn't get certified. I could go to dean Evans and lodge a complaint, but I considered that a last resort. Was having Stan Bellows call with a review of my apprenticeship a possibility? With my luck Adams would say I threatened Stans job, the same for Angelo. Then something he said had me thinking,"I'm familiar with your history." What if there was something more to that statement? I got on the phone to Stan Bellows. "Strange time for you to be calling Dennis." "Strange circustances Stan. One of my instructors is out of action and his replacement has just about promised me that I'm going to fail the practicum because he thinks I used the company to help me build it. I used only open source materials. I gave him my word of honor on that and he won't take it." "Sounds like he doesn't know you at all." "His name is Adams." There was a silence from Stan. "Silence isn't good Stan. What gives?" "Even with your memory back, it's not something you'd probably remember. You were only maybe 5 or 6. We were a lot smaller then. Adams had his own trade house at the time. He was hot on some company, I forget just who it was, and pushing their stock all over town. Your dad and I happened to disagree with him. Well he and your dad got into a rather public debate about the whole thing. Long and short of it being your dad was right and the company went bankrupt in less than a year. It pretty much ruined Adams as well. For a few years after that anytime your dad highly recommened anything Adams came out against it. Each time your dad proved out right and each time Adams came out against him it was another nail in is coffin so to speak. Adams finally had to get out of the market entirely. I had no idea he was teaching let alone at State." "So with dad gone he gets to visit his wrath on me now?" "Sure sounds like it." "I'm open to suggestions as to my best course of action." "Honestly, I don't see anything for it but for you to have a word with your dean." "Which was the last thing I wanted to do. Damn it. Okay Stan, put it all in writing, document it with anything that you can and email it to me so that I have something to show the dean when I go to see him please." "I'll have it out to you by tomorrow morning." "Thanks Stan. Anything happening there I should be aware of?" "Nope, just been business as usual." "Okay, thanks again Stan." "I'll get right on it. Later Dennis." I put my phone away and just sat there for a few minutes. Normally, it being Tuesday, I would head over to the rec center and a workout. I knew I wasn't in any frame of mind to be on the apparatus. I decided to head back to the apartment. I was on my way in that direction when I ran into Dana. "Not working out today Den?" "Not today Dana." "What's up Den? Not like you to not be there." "Just not in the right frame of mind." "Anything I can do to help?" "Not a damn thing that I can think of. Well, what do you know about a Mr Adams from the business cirriculum?" "I haven't had any dealings with him myself, but I have heard that he is a hardnosed S.O.B. Couple of guys have had dealings with him, but they graduated last year." "You know if anybody has complained about him before?" "Not that I know about. What the hell is going on Den?" "He had to take over my practicum and pretty much told me he was going to flunk me out no matter how well I do with it. Thinks I used my company for advice on building my portfolio. I didn't and I gave him my word of honor that I didn't. From what I've learned since then, he has an axe to grind with my dad." "So he's visiting the sins of the father upon the son so to speak." "Pretty well sums it up yeah." "Sounds like a problem for the administration." "Yeah that's pretty much the conclusion that was come to. If they don't see it my way, then I'm screwed. I don't get certified and I don't take the exam for my license." "I can see why you don't want to be in the room today. When are you going to go see somebody?" "Waiting on some documentation before I go in. Should be here tomorrow. I'll probably go see the dean later tomorrow." "Good luck with that Den. You want me to say anything to Coach for you?" "Only if he asks, otherwise keep it to yourself please." "You got it. Later." I made it back to the car and then to the apartment without any more interuptions. Karl got home at his usual time and when he walked in he could see that something was wrong.
