"Sorry to keep you waiting Mr Sawyer, do come in and have a seat." I kind of stumbled into the office and took a seat. "Now what seems to be the problem?" I laid it all out for him and gave him the packet that Stan had sent me. "So, you're claiming personal bias. And you say you gave him your word of honor that you compiled this portfolio from strictly open materials and did not involve your company at any point?" "I did." "Humph, the man clearly doesn't know you as well as he thinks. I'll look into this all Dennis. I don't suppose he made any statements where anybody else heard them? In the mean time continue on just as you would have regardless of what Mr Adams has to say. I hope to get this cleared up as soon as we can. Any other concerns?" "No sir he didn't, and no other concerns at this time sir." "Very well Dennis. I know it isn't going to be easy, but try and not think about this. Keep your mind on the rest of your studies and your gymnastics. Having another good all states would certainly look good for us." "I'll do what I can sir. Have a good evening." I left and went and checked the car over, called Karl and headed back to the apartment. "Well?" "Dean Evans is going to dig into it and told to just keep on keeping on. Did you have any idea that Gladys was his neice?" "News to me, why?" "She was at his offce when I got there and she didn't say anything but did give me a wink. After last night, I'm betting she 'primed' him for me." "So having friends can help right?" "Yeah I suppose." "Did the Dean give you any idea of what to expect?" "Nope, just that he was going to deal with it as quickly as possible. I got the feeling that he sure as hell wants to see me at the all state again this year." "Damn I didn't even think about that!" "I sure as hell did, but it's not my major concern. If I have to repeat the program, what are you going to do for the extra year?" "That's a problem for a year from now, if then. My money is on the Dean and this whole thing gets taken care of soonest." "I hope to hell so. Supper almost ready?" "Yeah just a couple." We had our meal and I helped Karl clean up and as much as I really didn't feel like it, I reviewed my portfolio even though I didn't have a review tomorrow. I checked my real one while I was at it. Both were in fine shape as far as I was concerned. Karl and I finally hit the sack, but I didn't sleep for shit. Thursday and we were up and out for our jogging with the guys, and they could see I wasn't in any better mood than I had been yesterday. "The Dean didn't give you any satisfaction Den?" "Right now all he can do is dig into it Cam. He hopes to have it taken care of soonest." "I suppose that's all he can do." "Yeah." Our laps were finished and Karl and I headed back to the apartment. Karl was soon on his way and I took care of a few things until it was time for me to head in. When Mr Adams came into the room, he looked rather surprised to see me, but he didn't say a thing. The usual discussion was had and seeing as it wasn't a review day for me I headed out. I did grab some lunch and debated heading over to the rec center, I knew I wasn't in any state of mind to be on the equipment today, but folks would think it strange if I didn't show up for at least a regular workout. Which is just what I did, which didn't go unnoticed. After I did my workout, I slipped into the whirlpool and Dana was there. "This still that thing with Adams?" "Yeah, but Dean Evans is digging into it know. Still that didn't leave me in the right frame of mind." "I heard that. You had better stop by and see Coach. He didn't say anything, but he sure as hell noticed you weren't there Tuesday or today." "I'll stop by after I get out of here. Any of the guys have anything to say?" "Not that I heard." "Ok. I suppose I'd better get to it then." I got out of the whirlpool and showered and changed. I then made my way over to the coachs office. "Well there you are. So what the hell is going on now?" I laid the whole thing out for him. "I don't happen to know the guy, so there isn't a hell of a lot I can do except be a character reference for you Dennis. Your word of honor would have been good enough for me." "I appreciate it coach. Dean Evans is looking into things right now and I'm hoping he has it sorted out pretty soon." "So am I. We sure as hell will be able to use you at the all states." "Think I need to say anything to the guys now so just in case they have time to get their heads around it?" "Not yet. Give it until at least next Tuesday and give Dean Evans a chance to work on it." "Ok Coach. I'll try to get in here Saturday, but I'm making no promises." "Hey, if you're not in any better frame of mind, I'd just as soon you stayed away and not take the chace on hurting yourself. You can come back from a few missed practices, but not soon enough from an injury no matter how minor." "I heard that. I'll see what frame of mind I'm in on Saturday then." "You think of anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to let me know." "I can't think of a thing, as I doubt like hell this guy will bow to any kind of 'peer pressure'." "Doesn't sound like it to me. So get on out of here." I headed back to the car and checked it out and headed to the apartment. I got there before Karl and got something going for supper. Karl showed up at about his usual time. "So how did the practicum go today?" "Adams seemed surprised to see me there, but there wasn't a word spoken. Then again I didn't have a review today." "So think anything will be done by Tuesday?" "Hell if I know, but Dean Evans told me to just keep up like nothing was wrong." "Why am I thinking that this Adams character isn't going to let it go that way?" "Probably because he won't. I'm sure he's going to be pushing my buttons so that I'll do something to justify him flunking me." "So avoid him? If I remember right you told me the reviews aren't mandatory." "They aren't but if I stop doing them at this point, it would probably make him think he has beaten me. I'm not going to give him that satisfaction." "Just so long as you keep your cool love." "Hey if Andros didn't make me loose my cool, I doubt Adams will." "Just had a strange thought lover. You said you didn't see how this guy wasn't serving time. What if the Securities Exchange Commission started looking at him again? Think that would give Dean Evans enough ammo to shitcan him?" "If they didn't nail him at the time, I doubt like hell they have any interest in him now Karl." "Hey it was just a thought." "I know and I appreciate that you're thinking about it lover, but you need to pay attention to your own classes for now." "I'm not worried about any of them this year. They're all covered." "I'm sure they are. Now let's eat." After we finished eating and cleaning up it was back to the books for a bit and then a little tv before we crashed. Friday morning and we were at it again. We were onto campus and our jogging with the guys. "So what news Dennis?" "Dean Evans just told me to keep up doing what I normally do and he'll see what can be done." "Doesn't sound very promising." "I've got to have faith Paul. Dean Evans hasn't done me wrong and lord knows we've had enough dealings over the last two years." "Yeah but I bet none of them have ever involved an instructor before." "No they haven't Aiden, but I still have to put my faith in him." Our laps were soon done and it was back to the apartment for Karl and I. Showered, changed and fed it was back to campus for us both. When I walked into Investment Vehicles I got a bit of a look from Mr Blevins. I didn't know what that was about, but I didn't like it. The class itself went along as usual. Then it was over to the Tax class with Mr McEmbers. That one went as expected until he motioned me over on my way out. "Watch your back Dennis. Mr Adams is having words with all of your instructors about how untrustworthy you are." "So he's out to get me it seems." "Looks like. You keep a low profile, but I have a meeting with Dean Evans a bit later, and I'll mention it to him." "I wonder why Adams has waited until now to start making trouble? Not like he shouldn't have known I was on campus." "No idea Dennis, but I'll mention that aspect to the Dean as well. Now I have a class to get to." I headed over to the student union for my lunch. Today it was Pete and Susan who stopped by. "I talked to Gordon this morning. Anything new happened since then?" "I just found out that the guy is badmouthing me to my instructors. I don't know what the hell his plan is except to keep me from getting certified." "But you can always try again can't you Dennis?" "I could Susan, but that would mean another two years of my life unless all I had to do was the practicum again. So that is still another year just for that." "Just out of left field Den, but could this be about the all state again?" "Possible, but I'm doubting it. Remember this guy has history with my dad." Or that could just be a plausible reason with something else behind it.
