"Karl, before we go in I need to ask you a couple of questions. We are out right?" "Babe we were going to get married next week. Of course we are out." "Ok just checking. Do we ever......entertain others?" "There are....were a select few. If you want to 'entertain' others I won't kickup to much of a fuss depending on who it is. Let's face it your memrory is still shot. You won't know the 'right' people to say yes to and who to tell to take a hike." "Yeah you got that right. Just one more thing I'll have to rely on you for." "Don't know what the hell you'll do when I have to head back to school." "Maybe there is a mutual friend that you trust?" "We'll have to see about that." "Ok,let's get this show on the road then." We headed up to the house and the front door was open. "Daaahlings you made it!" Roland was there to give hugs and air kisses once again. Tonight it was a purple lamee jumpsuit with matching deck shoes. "Yeah we figured that just eeeeevery body will be here so it might jog Denny's memory." "But of course daahlings. Well I'm sure you know just about everyone here so mingle, enjoy." We made our way a bit deeper into the house and staked out a place on a couch. I had decided that I wasn't going to push myself at people and if they were interested in talking to me,well they could see where I was. The booze was flowing freely, but Karl and I both decided to stay with just a soft drink. I sure didn't need a hangover on top of the amnesia. We sat there and said hi to a few people as they passed by. Then I took note of one guy at the bar. He locked eyes with me and nearly choked on his drink. He would make a beeline for our couch. "Dennis! I had no idea you were out of the hospital!" "Aaron,he just got out yesterday. He has amnesia and doesn't know you from a hole in the ground." Aaron looked crest fallen. He was another blond haired blue eyed beauty. "You mean there's nothing there? None of ...well you know." "Not a thing. Den,Aaron was one of the few that we would 'entertain'." "Maybe we will do so again sometime. Nice to remeet you Aaron." "I can't believe you don't remember Dennis and that I hadn't heard either. Then again I think this is the first time I've been out from behind the computer in about 3 weeks." "Programmer?" "Game designer. You used to help me every once in a while beta testing." "That sounds like fun." "Hey don't knock yourself. You've given me some pretty interesting twists. Do you remember.....no of course you don't. This is going to be a bit of a mindfield isn't it?" "It might be,but I'll tell you what. You just go for it. They tell me that just about anything can kick a memory in. A sight,a sound even a smell. So you just keep on with whatever you were thinking. It might help." "Well, I was stuck on how to get a player from one place to another. You hit on the idea of linked portals, but more importantly you showed me how to make them consistent with the game." I thought about that for a minute. "Nope doesn't do anything for me,but don't give up trying." It seemed that nobody had wanted to be that awkward first person to say something. Soon there were all kinds of people stopping to talk. Paul who had been on the gymnastic team with me,with a body that showed it. Later Karl told me he was straight. Gene who had been a friend since kindergarden, just a friend. Tony, a dark haired beauty who had been 'entertained' once or twice. Bob,who it seemed would do anything for a laugh, and apparently had to hear him tell it. There were female friends there as well. Alice had been a friend for many years. She was bi. Judy, the "proper" young lady. The night wore on as people would come and go. All the time though Aaron was there on one side and Karl on the other. Before the night was done I had a small mountain of paper with phone numbers and emails. Some with propositions attached. "Den,you know you don't have to accept any of those, but on the other hand I'm not going to stop you either. I know,in your own mind, you have to be sure of us before we can move on." "Karl, just having you say that goes a long way to making me sure. I may accept one or two, just to see if there is anything for anyone else, but more and more I'm doubting there will be." Karl simply smiled and then leaned in and kissed me an to hell with anybody else who might object. I had to get up and walk around a bit before I got too stiff. There would be hand shakes and gentle hugs from a few folks, even a couple of harmless gropes of certain parts of my anatomy. It was easy to tell that I truly was among friends. "Daaahlings ...Daahlings... Could I have yout attention please for just a few.? Many of you know that tomorrow is Dennis's birthday. On the off chance that he attended tonight I took the liberty." One of those large fake cakes was rolled out into the center of the room. "Happy birthday Dennis!" The cake would pop open and there was a well muscled and oiled young man wearing only a thong, leaving no doubt as to his endowment. He started a sinuous dance as he made his way out of the cake and made a beeline straight for me, His arms went around my neck and he started to carress me with his body. I was sure that I was seven different shades of red. Karl was using all of his will power either not to laugh or not to go up and pound the living shit out of Roland. I smiled at Karl to let him know that I wasn't truly pissed at Roland for this little stunt. I got into the spirit of the thing and started dancing back at the guy which got a rather startled look from him for a second before he really threw himself into it. There would be a good amount of good natured hooting and hollering going on and I just played to it,which naturally produce more of it. Eventually things got back under control, but not before I found a card tucked into my wiastband with the dancers name and number on it. I got Roland aside a bit later on. "You know I can't let that go unasnwered don't you?" "Well of course you can't daahling." He looked around for a second to make sure that nobody could hear us. "Just between you and me Dennis,I'm really glad to have you back. We may never have been the best of friends, but you were always there when I needed you. You never let anybody take advantage of me and I really do appreciate it. Oh you think I didn't know all those times you were half a block behind me on the way home from school. I'd lay dollars to doughnuts that saved my ass a few times." "Roland, you know I have no idea of what you're talking about right?" "Yes I know. I just mean to say that you have always treated me just as another person and not 'that other gay guy'. I know I go over the edge,it's just the way I am. People have come to expect it of me." "Maybe it's time you threw them a curve ball and make them accept you as a real person?" "You want me to try and do the John Wayne scene from the Birdcage maybe?" "No idea what you're talking about, but at some point you are going to have to get serious." "Sounds rather dull." "Unless you want to go through life as that 'other gay guy'. I'll help you if I can." "I really appreciate it Dennis. I'll have to think about it though." "I don't think I'll be going anywhere for a while." He leant in and gave a real kiss on the cheek before going back to the party. I'd head back in and find Karl and Aaron still on the couch waiting for me. "So did you rip that flamer a new one?" "Nope had a little bit of a heart to heart with him. I think you'll be seeing some changes made." "Is that necessarily a good thing?" "Give him a chance Aaron. He at least deserves that much. Look at it this way. He has at least kept the attention off of the rest of us for a few years." "Never thought of it that way. Guess we do owe him the chance." "Damn right we do Karl. I've already told him that I would do whatever I could to help if he'll let me." "Guess I can't do any less when I'm home lover. Aaron,I need you to do me a favor. When I'm at school will watch over this hunk for me? I mean don't let him turn into a recluse. Keep him active, but not too active." "I'll be glad to see that he gets out once in a while." "Or maybe we can stay in once in a while." "Hey!!" "Don't worry Karl I won't try and steal him from you." "Damn straight you won't." We let the party move around us for a while with a few more folks stopping to say hi and give me a good natured ribbing about the dancer. "Oh fuck." "What?" "Peter Pershing just walked in." "And this is a problem why?" "Den,his father was the drunk that hit you and your parents."
