I eventually had to get back to the dorm for bedcheck, but only after Karl and I had satisfied each other. Once bedcheck was seen to, I just crashed out until it was time to go jogging with Karl. Then it was once again into breakfast with the team. Today Karl and I headed for the rec center. Karl went to do a general workout and I was in the apparatus room to workout with the guys. It wasn't a mandatory workout, so once I was satisfied I went and got into my bathing suit and met up with Karl at the pool. "So everybody still on target?" "Yeah everybody still seems on top of things." After our swim and whirlpool time, we took quick showers and then headed for the apartment, where we took a good shower and got into some hanging-out clothes. Lunch was cleaning out some of the leftovers and getting the fridge emptied before we took off for the all-state. Granted, there was just a week to go, but we didn't want to leave anything over the summer. The days wore on and most of the guys went out and did things as a group. Practices were held and finally, we had the last all-day practice. "Ok guys, you're all looking good. Just try and relax until bus time on Wednesday. I know it's going to be dull, but let's keep the other activities to a minimum. Even a minor injury could really hurt us at this point." And so the days went until it was finally time to load the bus. Karl was going to follow us, but meet up with his family as well as Pete and Aaron. We pulled into the venue and made our inspection of the place and everyone got their credentials, at which point we headed over to the Y to settle in for the rest of the day. I did make it a point to go look up the high school team. Eddie Garcia and Steve Meyer were certainly there, after medaling last year. So was Alex. "Dennis!" "Hey, Alex! "Who would have thought I'd make it to the all-state my first year with the team?" "Me. I fully expected you to be here with the team after they all did so well last year." "Yeah, but I'm still only an alternate. Don't think I'll end up being in the team competition, but I sure as shooting will be for the individuals." "Yeah well regardless, I'm wishing you and the team the best of luck." Just then my phone went off with a text alert. Family and friends waiting in lobby. "I've got people waiting on me Alex. I'll catch you later." When I made it down to the lobby, Karl and his family were there along with Pete, Aaron, Gordon, and Aiden. The even bigger surprise was seeing Doug, Drake, Daniel, and Jeanine enter the door. The look on Karl's face was a surprise as well. After handshakes, hugs, and introductions, it was suggested we head across the street for an early dinner. We trooped across the street, and we must have made an impression of some kind last year as when we sat down the waitress asked how many unopened bottles of water did we want. While we ate I did notice that everybody seemed to be getting along just fine. Something that had been a major concern for me. We all took our walk, with the different conversations continuing amicably. When we got back to the Y it was another round of handshakes and hugs and wishes of good luck in case we weren't able to hook up tomorrow night. Karl and I found a shadow and had our kiss and they were all off to their hotels and I was inside. I did have a little time until bedcheck so I found the old high school team. Alex was bouncing off the walls in his excitement. "Damn Alex, you need to calm down or you'll never get to sleep tonight. If you should happen to get called up in the morning that just won't do." "We've got an afternoon seed, Dennis so coach is having us sleep in late instead of going to watch the morning round. That way we get to use the gym pretty much undisturbed." "Yeah, well don't leave it all in the warmup in that case. What are your plans for the summer?" "What do you mean?" "Are you kicking back all summer or are you going to try and stay in trim?" "I hadn't given it a lot of thought." "Well, it's beginning to look like I'm going to be competing again next year, so I intend to keep working out most if not all of the summer. I intend on every Saturday going over to Edgeton and working out on all of the apparatus. If it's ok with Patrick, you are more than welcome to come along." "Wow, thanks, Dennis. I'll talk to him about it when I can. Who knows if we'll be able to hook up after the competition tomorrow?" "OK, now try and get some sleep, and good luck tomorrow even if you don't compete. I'll try and catch up with you after the competition, but I'll have team dinner tomorrow night." "If we have any luck at all, you won't be able to get near us tomorrow night." "Here's hoping. Now I have to get down for bedcheck and so do you, get!" I hustled myself down to my room with just a few minutes to spare. The next morning we were all down and ready to go to the high school team event. I was able to enjoy myself a lot more this year as I didn't have to worry about Andros or the FBI hanging around. The morning wore on, and though there were some good performances, I didn't see anything I considered outstanding. It made me wonder if somehow all of the best teams had ended up in the afternoon session. It was soon time for the lunch break and I made my way out to the concession stands in hopes of finding Karl and the family. I didn't manage to find him so I texted him. Couldn't find you. Daniel upgraded our seats to Sky Box. Wow! Enjoy the view. Catch you at Y? Will try like hell. What do you think of comp so far? Good but not outstanding. Perhaps best is yet to come. With last year's champs not out yet almost a sure bet. Time to get back, later. I made my way back to my seat with the rest of the team and watched as the afternoon teams came out and took the floor. Steve and Eddie were front and center this year and Alex of course brought up the rear. As the afternoon session wore on, it became obvious to me that Steve and Eddie had been pushing the team as hard as they could. Everybody seemed to be doing an excellent job today. I watched with as close an eye as possible. My phone buzzed with a text. They're looking damn good. Yeah wouldn't be surprised if they gold. Anybody ever done 2 years in a row? Hell if I know. I got back to watching what was going on. By the time my high school team had finished their rotations, it was looking pretty obvious that they were going to be on the podium. With a few routines left to go for other teams, there was a possibility that they wouldn't gold. By the time the last routines were done, it was simple math, and it added up to my old high school taking the gold. We all stayed around just long enough for the medals to be presented and we hauled ourselves back to the Y. I didn't even try to get near the team once they got back to the Y as the media was all over them. I did get a little time with everybody before I had to make it into the team supper. After that, I did try to get up to see at least Alex, but their floor was sheer bedlam. I made my way back to my room and called Karl. "I see more press when we get home no matter how I do." "Hey, you're the one who keeps putting himself out there lover so you've got no room to complain." "Yeah, I suppose not. Bedcheck is in just a few. Hope I get to see you tomorrow night." "You'll see me regardless of how you do. Everybody else as well I imagine. What session are you guys in?" "Afternoon again this year. Maybe that will give us a chance to see Aldean, and see how good they really are." "Yeah well just remember, even at this late date they may hold something back for the individuals." "Always a possibility lover. Everybody still getting along?" "So far. Drake keeps making eyes at Connie." "Well that could get interesting I suppose." "I'm doubting it, she's been carrying on about Dana Perkins whenever somebody gives her the chance." "Sounds like it might be getting serious?" "Yeah, maybe it is. Don't go looking for wedding presents yet though love." "Yeah, I doubt like hell your parents are ready for that." "Parents hell, I'm not ready for it. Anyway, get some sleep lover."
