I had better get it up to him." I took off for Mr Bellows office and when I got there was promptly stopped by his secratary. "You can't go in there right now he is with a client. Just leave that and I will see that he gets it." "Sorry, but I'll wait for Mr Bellows." "I beg your pardon?" "I was given instructons to put this right into Mr Bellows hands period." "I'll not have you lollygagging around here when there is work to be done. You can either give me the package and get back to work or you can find yourself another job. Clocks ticking." I had made my stand the way we had planned so I turned the package over and left. I immediately texted to Mr Bellows private cell that I had left the package with his secratary. I returned to the mail room and would get back to work and await results. Quitting time came and I heard nothing. I was tempted to go and check with Mr Bellows but I didn't. That might have tipped the person that a trap had been set and hopefully sprung. It was home to the usual routine of dinner with Millie and Peter,tv reading, text message and bed. The morning routine followed that with running breakfast and then off to work. Nothing was said all morning nor late into the afternoon. It was close to quitting time when Bob's phone rang. I was being summoned to Mr Bellows office. I got to the office and his secratary was not at her desk. I knocked on the door. "It's open Dennis." I walked in to find Mr Bellows there alone. "I still haven't seen the package." "Then I would think a search of your secratary's desk is in order and if she has a locker anywhere on the premises that as well." "Don't we need a court order or something?" "I'm betting not as it is all company property, but let me make a quick call." I called Mr Jacobs and was given a confirmation that we were on firm legal ground. Mr Jacobs had written the company policies for my Dad ages ago and had made the right to search incorporated into the employment agreement. "The lawyers say we're good to go." When we went back outside, the secratary was again at her desk. "Janice, I would like you to unlock all of your drawers and step away from your desk." "Mr Bellows, have I done something wrong?" "I certainly hope not Janice." Mr Bellows proceeded to go through each and every drawer of the desk, and found no a single sign of the package. "The package that Dennis brought to you yesterday. Where is it?" "He didn't drop any package here yesterday." "And I suppose you didn't threaten to have me fired either?" "I don't have the authority to get anyone fired. Who are you going to believe Mr Bellows? Me or some kid whose been here less than a month?" "In this particular case, the kid who has been here less than a month. Where is it Janice?" "I'm telling you he didn't give me any package!" "Where is the package woman?" The tone of my voice made her jump and her eyes flickered toward one of the filing cabinets. I went to the cabinet and started at the top drawer and worked my way down to the bottom. I even checked the bottom of the drawers and didn't find the package. Janice would have a self satisfied look on her face. "I told you I didn't get a package." I noticed that the cabinet was not built into the wall and that there was a slight space between the two. I slipped my fingers into the space and followed it down until they came into contact wirh something. I managed to pull it out. Sure enough it was the package I had delivered. "Why Janice?" "Why? Because I've been her 12 years now and I'm no closer to the brokerage floor than I was 12 years ago! I was told that I could get into the apprentice program after 5 years! Yet here I am still a secratary! Hell this kid will probably see the apprentice program before I will!" "You've made certain of that Janice. I doubt there are any criminal charges that can be brought against you,but you are most certainly out of a job. Clean out your things, turn in your ID to the Human Resoucres office and leave." "Oh no you don't get off that easy. It takes both partners to fire me summarily." "Then consider yourself fired. Mr Bellows get whatever form you need and I'll sign it." "You'll sign it? Who the hell do you think you are kid?" "I don't think I know and that's Mr Sawyer to you and not kid." I had never seen anyone turn that white that fast as her mouth kept moving but nothing was coming out. "Get security or someone you trust to get her out of my building. Write up a statement for unemployment as I am sure they will be investigateing this summary dismissal. If there is a specific form for it get me one and I'll sign it." Mr Bellows called Bob as he was one of the few people who knew the truth and he would see Janice from the building and hopefully keep my cover intact for at least a little longer. "We need to check through the personnel files and see if that promise was made to anyone else and then follow through if we can." "First thing in the morning. I must say Dennis that I'm impressed with the way you handled that. She never saw you coming." "Blindsiding somebody nearly always works if you have the nerve to carry it out. I was pissed. Not only was she screwing with us,but in effect with everyone of our clients, and that's something that I won't stand for." "Sounds just like your father." "Lord I hope so!"
