As with everyday,5:45 rolled around and I rolled out of bed and slipped on my jogging clothes. Aiden and Gordon were there waiting for me and we headed out and started our run. We picked up Karl as we passed his dorm and continued on. There didn't seem to be as many people around this morning as usual. We finished and we all hit our respective showers and got ready for breakfast with Karls family and Millie. The three of us piled into the Benz and headed out to Rons. The folks were there and the place was relatively empty. "Morning folks. You got here at a good time. Another half hour and we'd be packed. Coffee?" "Three please, unless you boys have taken up the habit?" "Oh I'll pass thanks,Pete?" "No thanks." Menus were brought out by it was what you would expect. Eggs in various styles and omlets as well. The various orders were placed and soon enough the food was served. While we were eating the place really did start to fill up. A good thing to remember for future weekends. They all appeared to be locals as there was a good deal of back and forth between tables and booths. This time when the check came it was my hand that was out first. "You don't have to do this Dennis." "And you know what my standard reply to that is Stan." "Yes I do." Which ended the argument. As we were on our way out a familiar face was coming in with what had to be his family. "Hey Paul how goes it?" "Who...oh yeah Dennis. It goes well." We each continued along our way and out to the lot. "What was that all about Dennis?" "Just making friends and influencing people Stan." Hugs and kisses were exchanged and people got into various vehicles and were on our way back either to the campus or home. "So what are we going to do for the rest of the day guys?" "I don't know what you two have in mind, but I've got some studying to do. I'll catch you later." "So,Karl shall we head for the rec center and get a work out in?" "I don't suppose that could hurt." So it was off to the rec center which was pretty empty on a Sunday morning. Karl and I made our way around the machines for a while and then we made our way back to the gymnastics equipment. There were a couple of guys from the team in there working out and I got a couple of scowls when I entered the room. "Why don't you just piss off Sawyer." "This isn't worth it Den." "You know better than to think I'm going to back down Karl." I went over to the Horse which nobody was using and used it to warm up a bit. The guy with the load mouth just kept watching me when he wasn't working a piece of equipment. I was getting some of my stamina back and moved toward the parallel bars and so did the loud mouth. I decided to let him have the bars as he was on the team and I wasn't. Each time I started to move to a piece of equipment, someone from the team moved that way as well. I pretty much got the point. "Come on Karl we might just as well get out of here." "You're not going anywhere Dennis." I turned in the direction of the voice. "Gary, hey. Don't do anything to piss them off on my account. I can live without the workout." "Yeah you probably can, point is you shouldn't have to. Listen up you meat heads. Dennis may very well have saved my life doing what he did. You turkeys may think he screwed me over, but he hasn't. Now I don't want to see anymore of this bullshit. The coach says he has every right to be here,so stop screwing with him." Not much was said, but there were a couple of embarrassed looks to be seen. "Thanks Gary you didn't need to stick your neck out like that." "Yeah I did. I know what some of these goofs are capable of and you don't deserve that kind of treatment. Now if you still want your workout I bet you can get to any piece of equipment you want." "Maybe some other time,I've already cooled down at this point. You let me know how things are going for you Gary." "Yeah I will. Coach has gotten me an appointment with a guy over at the medical campus. Suppose to be top of the field so we'll see what comes of that." "Good luck with that Gary. Let's catch a swim Karl." We went and changed into our swim suits and headed for the pool. We did several laps and then headed for the Jaccuzzi for a few minutes, after which we showered and headed out. "I suppose Pete has the right idea and we should get some studying done." "I suppose so. See you for dinner?" "Yeah I suppose so. Hit the food court?" "Sounds like a plan to me. Meet me at the car about 5?" "Yeah sounds good to me." We went our seperate ways at that point. As I was headed into the dorm,Gordon and his parents were just coming out. "Ah Mr Sawyer I was hoping to run into you before we left." "Mr Bartlett, what can I do for you?" "Gordon tells us that you are going to try a build him up a little bit. No steroids or anything like that I hope?" "No sir just good old fashion work." "Yes well do take it easy on him,hes never really been all that physical." I shot a look to Gordon as I had seen how easily he had taken Dave down that first day. His father must have seen the look. "Oh he's had training, but even given that hes never been one for sports or anything." "I won't push him any harder than I need to Mr Bartlett." "Well then I guess that's all that can be expected. Good luck with your freshman year Mr Sawyer." "Thank you sir. Have a safe trip home." I got a handshake from him and then they were on their way and I headed up to my room. "Pete,Karl and I are headed out about 5 for the food court, you coming with?" "Yeah probably. Anybody else going?" "Haven't asked anybody yet, why? Are Gordon and Aiden starting to get on your nerves a bit?" "Nah I was just asking." At that point I just went to my desk and started going over the material for the next day. Next thing I knew my phone was ringing and it was Karl. "Hey I'm waiting on you." "Damn didn't realize it was that late. We'll be down in a minute." "We?" "Yeah Pete's coming with. Is that a problem?" "No not at all." "Ok be down in a couple." Pete was already standing by the door waiting on me. So it was down and out and to the mall. We each got what we wanted from the various options available and found ourselves a table and started to eat. "Sawyer! What the hell was that all about this morning?" "Hey Paul. Nothing really, just wanted you to know there were no hard feelings. Why is there a problem?" "My dad saw me being friendly with somebody from the college and couldn't believe his eyes. He wondered what the hell had gotten into me. He was afraid I was doing something." "Sorry about that Paul. You get it all straightened out?" "Yeah finally when Ron came out to say hi and backed me up." "Then we're all good?" "Yeah I'd say so," "Then take it easy and enjoy life while you can." "Yeah you too." Paul went on his way with a couple of his buddies and we finished our supper. We took a walk around the mall for a little while and then decided to go into Walmart and picked up a small refridgerator and some things to go in it and headed back to the car. Soon enough we were back on campus and the fridge ws pulgged in and stocked with a few munchies and a bunch of different drinks. Life went on as usual for the next few days. I was sitting at my desk wenesday night, working on some homework when my email dinged. I opened up the mail and it was from Aaron of all people. There was nothing inside of it except a link. I clicked on and a printed newstory came up. Honest Charlie Chambers had died. There would be veiwing Friday night and services to be held on Saturday morning. "Pete I'm going home this weekend. Honest Charlie died this morning. You coming with?" "Not unless you really need me to. I didn't like the man Den. Why should I go to his funeral?" "For the same reason I am."
